I love Abe's Bagels, they are phenomenal.  Best bagel I've had since Bagel World in Salem, MA.  As other yelpers have mentioned, the Spinach Bagels are out of this world...and their egg bagels, and their everything bagels.....I love them all I guess!

The cream cheese is nothing special, but it's got a nice whip on it, and it spreads on better than my grocery store cream cheese..

I would like to go back in the afternoon/evening sometime to pick up some pizza and try that out...

I actually crave this place sometimes and I have to make the special trip in the morning before work...

Pricier than Bagel World, but it's a different kind of Bagel, and everything is a little pricier in Newburyport.

I wish you could to half star ratings sometimes, and this is one of those times. I read the great Yelp reviews and made a trip to Newburyport to try some of Abraham's famous bagels. What I found was very similar to places like Bagel World but for more than double the cost. The prices are ... ouch, expensive. I know it's Newburyport and everything is a little more pricy than you would find in say Danvers, but this seemed excessive. Add to that my least favorite store policy ever: Cash Only and I have to give it a huge thumbs down. We bought less than we normally would at Bagel World and it came to double the price.

The bagels are delicious. The selection is pretty big. I tried the Asiago and later the spinach and both were great. The coffee selection wasn't very good and they were out of cream, and we couldn't get anyone's attention to fill it up so I had to go with milk. I am not a milk in coffee person!

The place was absolutely packed. Think out the door, no room to breathe packed. Very similar to Bagel World except in a much smaller location so it felt even more tedious and crowded. I do not think I'd want to wait in that sort of line for bagels again.  All in all, I enjoyed the food (once I got it) but really hated the price. I don't see myself returning.

There's nothing like walking into Abe's in the morning and smelling the bagels baking. They're the best in town and their cream cheeses are also deliciously evil. Don't forget their wonderful sandwiches and pizza as well.

Unfortunately, I subtract one star because they are cash only. More often than not, I have to go to Starbucks across the street or Dunks simply because I don't have cash on me. In a decade where people are paying for their food using cell phones, Abe's should get with it and accept credit cards. The increase in sales would offset that percentage they lose!

It seems that this place has pretty strong name recognition in Newburyport, and even though the bagels are tasty, and they are quite a few in variety, they aren't the best bagels I've ever had.

I've had a few experiences here. When I ordered a meatball sub, the bread was Extremely toasted, so it was severely dry (almost reaching burnt levels), and I hadn't been asked if I wanted it toasted or not, so that was kind of a bummer, but the meatballs were tasty, and pretty filling.

Subsequently, I have ordered a few tasty (but small in size) egg/cheese sausage breakfast sandwiches on bagels, and on one occasion got bacon on the sandwich, when I had requested sausage.

Also, the employees tend to be a little snappy, and are not the friendliest of people.

The bagels however are baked fresh daily, and are decent. I would give the bagels a 6.5 - 7 rating out of 10.

It's also worth noting that Abe's only accepts cash for payment.

So I've been coming here for years. Solid bagel and pizza place - maybe more in the 3.5 to 4 star range, which as we all know, is respectable.

But this morning Abe's Bagels reached the blessed 5 star rating from yours truly.

You see, I was starving. I mean my tummy was aching for some attention and my wife shows up to my work ... and I'm like, "feed me Morris, feed me." So she's like, I'll get you something at the Purple Onion - and I'm like "hells no!" So we agree on Abes, but I don't have their menu and their on-line site is just their name, phone and address. So off goes my wife and I can only hope she gets me something that will sate my very primal hunger.

Flash forward 20 minutes and once again my godly wife walks in, but this time with sustenance for moi.

Out of a brown paper bag comes a tin foiled wrapped saucer of goodness. I opened the foil, and steam ushered out and within the wrapping I found the holy grail of bagels: a plain bagel with the basic breakfast ingredients of bacon, egg and cheese. I sink my teeth into the outer firm coating of the bagel, into the softness of the bagel's interior, into crunchy bacon and fluffy eggs held together with melted cheese.

Well, let me tell you, it only took one bite for me to know what heaven is. I attempted to savor every morsel but before I knew it the bagel was gone, and I felt emptiness inside of me (but no longer the emptiness in my tummy).

And then in my delusion (but near orgasmic state) I found myself having a vision of my adult self in a kiddie pool filled with these perfectly formed bacon, egg and cheese bagels and inhaling the sandwiches like they were air.

I know ...  a bit unusual to say the least ... but I'm just sayin' ... that's how good this bagel was.

The best place in Newburyport to have a bagel (and the best I have had outside of NYC).  The french toast bagels are amazing.  I brought a dozen into work to share with my coworkers and they are all huge fans now too.

It gets very busy on weekend mornings, especially in the summer.  They also have a great patio that is open seasonally.  Even though we live in town, we have only been for the bagels so I can't comment on the pizza/lunch items.

One note - they are cash only!

Their french toast bagels are the best thing ever. Try it for a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and bacon. It will blow your mind. The coffee is bad (typical of New England) and the pizza is salty and not great. Go for the bagels though, they are worth it. The cream cheese is fantastic too. I'd rate the service as so so: not friendly, but very efficient.

Hands down, bar none, the best bagels you will ever have.  I spent a lot of time in NYC....and these not only compare but my friends from NYC bring them home with them!  It's true.

Try the bagel sandwiches when you really need a treat!

So... let's get this straight. I need to represent the New Yorkers here. These are not New York-style bagels. They are not crispy on the outside or dense yet soft on the inside. The cream cheese is Philadelphia. This is not how I grew up.

HOWEVER, I might dare to say that the bagel I had today at Abe's ranked on par with NY bagels on flavor, just with a different (and very pleasant) consistency. They are very light and fluffy but not chewy or crunchy. I think they could benefit from some fresh cream cheese but Philly will do, I suppose.

The bagels are actually very similar to The Bagel Station in Sparta, NJ-- where I shamefully indulge in doughy bagels on the "wrong side" of the state line. Just that little bit of nostalgia brought me up to 5 stars.

Just to top it all off, the slices of tomato that sat atop my husband's poppy bagel looked like a caricature of a tomato. Perfect in every way-- not some weak grocery store tomato, but a real ripe bright red flavorful tomato. Even in NY we don't get toppings like that!

Something in my soul made me decline getting a dozen to go (we were on the drive back to NYC, after all), and I started regretting it the minute we drove away. Next time, Abe's! I promise!

ps. whoever thinks this is overpriced, get over it. We paid under $10 for two bagels with cream cheese and two sodas. If your lunch costs 5 bucks and fills you up, you need to stop complaining.

Tiny, cash-only and cute. However, though their bagels are tasty, they definitely need to toast them better. Ours could only be described as very warm. Bummer!

I get an Abraham's Bagel every single Sunday. Seriously. I make my husband run out and grab one for me before the crowd descends. Their spinach bagels are omigosh so great! It's hard to find spinach bagels anywhere, let alone the good kind.

They also sell very very expensive pizza at night that tastes overwhelmingly like onions. Steer clear of that, but go in the a.m. for some bagels. Get there early (or late) to avoid the crowd. There's a nice little patio off to the side to eat in.

Best bagels ever, simply stated. The bagels have a crisp exterior with a soft chewy interior. They are made fresh every morning and are usually hot. I'm not talking like luke warm here, they are almost burn your hands hot which is great because you don't have to toast them.

The blueberry bagel is my favorite bursting with tons of fresh blueberries. Followed by a close second of the french toast bagel. It is sweet and syrupy but isn't overboard or too sticky.

The cream cheese is made in house and quite wonderful as well. It is of the whipped variety and they have many flavors to complement whatever you wish to enjoy with your bagel.

Yup, best bagels around. Big variety, too, and worth every penny. They move some people through there on weekends, quickly, too, I might add! Pizza is AWESOME. But I have the same complaint about their hours! Some things we just learn to live with, I guess.

5 stars cuz I miss you so much.

Fantastic Bagels! Seriously though, I think these may even be better than the bagels I get when I go to NYC. Totally love this place. I've been here hundreds of times and I am destined to return a hundred more.

I used to think that this place opened at 5am but it actually opens at 6am. This is a fact I learned one morning after staying up all night because I had to drive my sister into Logan for a flight at 3am. On my way back home I decided to make a detour to Abe's for a very early breakfast. It was 5:30am and I assumed that they had to be open. When I arrived they were still closed (much to my dismay) but the lady inside who was getting the shop ready let me in and even let me buy a bagel a half an hour early. Good folks here.

    Cash only folks!

Abe's Bagels has been there for years and my friends parents love the place and so I learned about it from them. Now I live in Newburyport and go to Abe's at least once a week. I would give this place 5 stars, but I feel that I have to give it four because their pizza is expensive and while decent it isn't the best in town. I also dislike whipped cream cheese. Their cream cheese has a really nice flavor, but it is too soft and if the bagel is toasted (I never toast bagels, this is practically sacrilege to me) it liquifies the cream cheese and if they're hot and fresh (as they usually are) they taste great but can be very messy. I have also had bagels almost as good at other places (not in NYC, don't know what the big deal with NYC bagels are, the only time I had an NYC bagel it was decent but nothing to write home about). The bagels are very good and the breakfast sandwiches are also wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone, even if they lived out of town. It's also the only place to get a real bagel in town, and I'm glad I live so close. Good stuff.

Absolutely outstanding bagels.  They are making them right behind the counter all day .  Have them toasted or hot right out of the oven.  Many choices of bagels, spreads and hot breakfast sandwiches on bagels too.  Excellent pizza to be had in the afternoon.  But keep in mind they keep bagel shop hours not late night pizza shop hours so be prepared.  They serve Green Mountain coffee and now they have an espresso machine.  In the Winter this small place is warmed by the oven, and in the summer they have a large very nice outdoor deck.  The line is often out the door in the mornings but it moves fast and it is worth the wait.  Enjoy!

I am probably one of the few people that rarely eats bagel at Abe's, although I have had enough to confirm the quality. Abe's is probably one of my favorite lunch spots in NBPT. It's enough off the beaten path, so it is not mobbed at lunch time and their wraps and pizza are really good. Before the recent addition of some new pizza places in town, Abe's was my hands down favorite. The only issue with Abe's for lunch and dinner is the weird hours, but I am getting used to it and they seem to be making a few concessions on their end to extend hours on the weekends.

Great bagels but very expensive.  Good pizza, if you can get it.  In the summer this place shuts down before the sun sets.  Not sure what the deal is with a lot of Newburyport businesses shutting down before most people get home from work but they do.  This place is one of the only restaurants that do this.  I would probably buy more pizza here if they were ever open.  We went by at 7:40 last Friday and they were sweeping the place, chairs on the tables.  Lost sale for them...

This place is great!  Hands down the best pizza in Newburyport.  The breakfast sandwiches are unbelievable.  The bagels are made fresh, and the french toast bagel is absolutely amazing.  One request would be that they should accept credit cards.  They only take cash or local checks.  Other than that, I think this place deserves 5 stars.
