Great little Italian joint! Love, love, LOVE the bread and olive oil. I usually get the Chicken Pasta Aboca. It has capers and tomatoes and artichokes in garlic sauce, YUM! They make their own pizzas, too.. They have reasonably priced lunch and dinner specials. My favorite Italian place in RIchardson!

I was beginning to think all my reviews were going to end up overly positive and maybe I wasn't objective enough, BUT then I went back to Aboca. We've been going to Aboca for years and have loved it 4 out of 5 times. We went there about 2 months ago and our server was not very experienced, which is ok, but he waited on a big table before us, that got there after us. Then he still took time to get to us. We left, just an off night. We went back a couple of weeks later and really enjoyed the food and service.
This place is great to share, because they do give you large portions. Last night we started with calamari. It tasted pretty good, texture good, flavor good, but it did have a slight taste of old oil. Another sip of wine and forget it, it was so slight. The salad we split, capri was excellent - except for the unripe tomatoes. The portobello mushrooms were warm and I loved that. It was almost like we had two separate salads on each plate, a caprese - with the mozzarella, tomatoes, warm grilled portabellos and a touch of pesto, along with mixed greens, feta, black olives and the dressing on the side. Really, it was very good. But it couldn't make up for the rest of the meal and the service.
The problem came with the entree we split - veal saltimbocca. We had it before and it was good. The menu says it comes with prosciutto, egglant and provolone with madiera sauce.Eggplant was parmagian style and I gave it to my husband because he loves eggplant. The veal was so tough you couldn't cut it with a fork. The prosciutto was non existent, or unrecognizable. What provolone? Very little sauce. The side of pasta had a teaspoon of marinara sauce.
When my husband told the server it was tough she asked if he wanted a knife. LOL!? We told her about the toughness, lack of prosciutto, lack of provolone, lack of flavor, in a nice but firm way. She brought us the bill and nothing was said, nothing was deleted. When we asked for the manager, she sent her sister over. We've been going there long enough to know she wasn't the manager and if she was, they have bigger problems. We asked for the owner and they said he was cooking.
If you have a problem with food and let them know, there should be some type of compensation, whether it's taken off the bill, some type of discount, or a future discount. I'm pretty sure we won't be back. Too bad too, we love mom and pop places. -

Aboca's is easily the worst restaurant I have ever tried. The restaurant itself is in a run-down strip mall, right next to a McDonald. The first time we went there, the restaurant was full and we were thinking it must be one of the those diamonds-in-the-rough places. We waited inside the door for a waiter or waitress to take down our name and party size. We waited, waited, and waited. For over 15 minutes, not a single waiter or watress came over or made eye contact to acknowledge our presence and we were not the only family waiting! Given the small size of the restaurant and the large number of people there, we can feel the drop in oxigen level and increasing strong suffocating smell. We decided to go to Kirin just across 75 and had a great dinner.
We went back two weeks later as we figured they must have had a short of hand on that particular night. Also, Aboca's just started running promotions through http://restaurant.com that offers a $50 discount on a $100 purchase. This time, the restaurant was almost empty. However, the waitress told me that the owner explicitly told them that they will not honor the discount certificate despite what is printed in black and white. At our insistence, she called the owner but the owner won't pick up the phone, so we left and later went to Mi Piaci (which offers excellent Italian food and service).
After looking through previous reviews, I realized that we are not the only scammed customers. We are very glad that we didn't eat its any of its food. If a restaurant can simply disregard what they offered in black and white, how can we trust what they put in their dishes? Given the smell, I don't even want to think about it. ... -

I was excited to find a http://restaurant.com certificate for this location, but they would not accept it even though their address and "Abocas Richardson" is clearly listed on the website. Monday night was extremely loud with many birthday parties going on at the same time. Service took about 10 minutes to bring drinks, and another 15 to bring the menus. The food was ok, the waitresses were very friendly, but I won't be returning.

Decent food overall but definitely some complaints. Our server was very friendly but seemed to rush us along. I would avoid the salads, most of our table got a caesar salad and everyone agreed that it was not very good at all. The dressing had no flavor, it tasted basically like lettuce with some olive oil. We also order the appetizer sampler and it made us wish we had more of the salad, everything was very bland. The entrees was where the meal improved, most of the table ordered either steak or the rack of lamb and all were extremely good. I had the chicken parmesan and it was enjoyable. One thing I did find odd is that our server mentioned several times that we should take advantage of the desserts as Saturday is the day that they make them. OK place but order steak and skip the salad.
The place is BYOB with only a nominal corkage charge but like most places, the stemware is not very good so you may want to consider taking your own. -

Bread and oil is AMAZING and a great way to start.
Food is all about one or two dollars more than I'd like to pay at first review of the menu, however once getting my plate, I realize I'm paying for twice the portion that I'd expect, so the extra dollar or two is no big deal.
HUGE portions, good flavor, great waitstaff. Enjoy the free (and amazing) bread, split an entree with someone (or have leftovers tomorrow) and eat a piece of Marscapone Vanilla Bean Cheesecake. Definitely worth every penny. I'll be back again and again.
$$ Moderate price rating but on the LOW end of moderate. Way closer to 11 than 30 (for the average plate). -

The food at Aboca's is always outstanding. The garlic olive oil with the bread is awesome and addicting. The quality of service is sometime spotty, but the place is small and the servers aren't that hard to track down, plus it's just great food!

Aboca's is THE BEST ITALIAN restaurant I have ever eaten at. We have been coming here for years because 1) they never disappoint in the food quality and 2) their customer service is top notch. As family owned businesses go, their passion for food is only excelled by their service to the customers. Now when you come in, don't expect a lot in decor like Olive Garden/Macaroni Grill/Maggianos, but their food and prices will knock your pants off. Also it is a BYOB, so it' like a double rainbow experience!
For appetizers, we always get their Texas sized mozzarella sticks. You can really taste the freshness of the mozzarella and the marinara sauce. Also their fried calamari is an excellent dish, always crispy never soggy. Squeeze on the fresh lemon for a flavor party in your mouth.
My wife usually gets the chicken cacciatore, which even though isn't on the menu, they will make. It is a savory dish that makes your mouth water. While all their dishes are very good, it is their chicken piccata (ask for it with prosciutto on top), that I would say is the best that I have ever had. Aboca's is the only place that you can ask for prosciutto and actually get it. Others usually stick some ham on top and call it prosciutto, but once you've had the real stuff you can tell. The light cream sauce in angel hair pasta is a nice compliment to the hearty portions of chicken breasts with capers. Your taste-buds will thank you with every bite as you savor the flavor.
Finally the dessert; while you can't go wrong with any of their homemade desserts, it is their tiramisu that is their signature one. While the portion is big enough to feed four, you will want to order one all for yourself. Their special ingredient for their tiramisu is rum, which really kicks it up whole 'nother notch! BAM! BAM! BAM! (sorry Emeril). You will have a food ORGASM when this hits your palate. There is about a cup of rum in every spoonful, yummmmmmm! If you have had tiramisu elsewhere, you're robbing yourself of a truly amazing experience. -

My wife and I were craving for Italian food this past weekend and when I texted my friend she recommended us to go check out Aboca's. I called them in advance and turned out to be a good move as they had a 45 minute wait. So we made a reservation and went to the store to get a bottle of Bella Sera chianti. I love BYOB's.
We were seated promptly when we arrived. The place was packed and I was quite amazed to see how efficient the whole place was operating. Everyone was on top of their game. The waiter promptly uncorked our wine and poured it for us and brought water without even asking. He took our order shortly after and they served us fresh bread. When I say fresh, it was steaming hot fresh bread. The olive oil dip with a garlic and balsamic vinegar mixture was really good.
Our house salads arrived quite fast and they were OK. Nothing really to rave about to be honest. Then came our appetizer sampler platter. I ordered it because I was craving for the mozzarella sticks and my wife wanted the bruschetta. Their bruschetta was unusually cheesy and not what a traditional Italian Bruschetta is. While we were eating we couldn't help but notice that everyone around us was ordering steaks and these steaks were humongous let me tell you. I mean a whole table of 4 could probably feast on one dish probably. But it is Texas sized Italian I am sure. I was glad I ordered seafood as the steak would have been too much for me.
The appetizer was good, but the bottle of wine was definitely enhancing the flavor and our evening :) Our main entrees arrived. I had the seafood Pescatore which was a mixed seafood pasta with salmon. I personally don't recommend it as it was too oily and greasy. My wife had the Sicilian Risotto. This was much better but you have to add your own salt and pepper to it as the dish in itself comes bland for some reason. I am not sure if that was intentional or an accident.
Finally to conclude the evening we ordered Tiramisu. Just like all their meals, their desserts are also large. Their Tiramisu had a bit of a strong liquorish flavor which I wasn't too keen of. But putting all that aside, we had a great time considering we finished our wine and had lots of leftovers to take home and their food was not too expensive either.
Overall I would say that Aboca's is a great Americanized Italian restaurant with good service and descent food in a small family owned restaurant setting. So I would recommend it and I give it 3.5 Stars. -

Nice service, decent salmon. One-and-done though... Figured that when the (small) bug ambled 'round the side of my soup bowl leisurely, looking like he was perfectly at home.

Love this place. It's BYOB so that automatically encouraged me to try it. Even better, the food is great and the portions are huge! Two entrees for 4 people is all you need if you agree on what you want to eat.
The owner has spent some time in New York working at an Italian place and perfecting his recipes. I think he also helped open Eatzi's years ago. He was very nice.
We had a group of 5 adults and 4 kids. The place is pretty small and loud but had a good vibe. There's usually a wait on the weekends. They are CLOSED ON SUNDAY.
There is a one-time $1 per glass corking fee.
Used this place for an event and picked up the food. Everyone loved it as well. -

Aboca's is my kind of place.
It's a neighborhood, non-chain, ethnic eatery. It advertises itself as Italian, but I believe the owner may actually be Albanian, so the food can hint at a more general Mediterranean flair? On the other hand, because they target the American market that is familiar with the Southern Italian pasta thing, most people will be completely comfortable eating here, unlike most little ethnic spots.
Your meal comes with warm, soft, chewy bread. The dip is not just olive oil, it has spices and loads of garlic and is completely delicious. The house salad comes with a zesty dressing and is more than just lettuce.
Their food is your basic pasta and pizza. Their tilapia is good, their signature Aboca dishes (with mushrooms, artichokes, and lemon cream sauce) are delicious. Everything is just spiced well and has much more flavor than some flat pasta dishes.
The desserts are to die for - especially the tiramisu, which is very light and you could possibly get drunk off of. :) The chocolate cannoli is also good, but so is the Italian cream cake! It's hard to go wrong.
AND.... the prices are reasonable. Score.Listed in: Favorite Spots in Richardson,…

My friend and I came for a late lunch and were surprised to see other patrons there in the middle of the day. I ordered the chicken and sausage cacciatore which was listed on the chalkboard by the door as a special. The waiter was distracted the whole time...didn't know what special I was talking about, never brought my friends iced tea, wrong dressing on salad etc.
As Flor mentions above, the olive oil and seasonings for the warm, chewy bread is really delicious. Their salad is really good, not just dumped out from a jumbo size pre-made salad. Lots of green lettuce not the crunchy end pieces.
The entree on the other hand was very bland. The sausage had absolutely no flavor at all.
Overall it's an ok place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

We checked out aboca for lunch today and it was pretty good. We each got a spinach salad - I removed most of my toppings (except strawberries and walnuts) so mine was a little boring, but it tasted fresh and the dressing was very good. The bread and oil was yummy. We shared a crostada - which sort of looked like a loaf of bread, but was filled with cheese, mushrooms, and sausage (normally has onions and peppers instead of the mushrooms). It was yummy. Just garlicky enough and not too bready. The red sauce provided for dipping was pretty good too.
Over all - good food, but the ceiling looks like a leather sofa and the piece of the sofa-ish ceiling covering that is kind of falling (by the door) sort of freaked me out.
I'll probably go back and try other dishes and just try to avoid looking at the scary ceiling:) -

It's rare when I start off a review talking about the free bread. But the bread is served warm and soft, and they serve it with garlic olive oil. If you love garlic like I do, then you will really love this. Sometimes I eat too much of this stuff and it ruins my appetite.
The items I usually order here are the tilapia and the carbonara. Beware as the portions can be on the large side, so definitely bring your appetite when coming here. Prices can be on the high side, but still priced reasonably for the food you do get.
I definitely recommend the chocolate cake for dessert if you have room for it. -

If you want superb & tasty Italian food in large portions at minimal cost, this is the place.
I highly recommend the pescatore entree. Its amazing the seafood does not quit....& its not like other restaurant's where u have to search for the seafood pieces in the pasta..... here the pasta is at the bottom of the dish weighed down by all the fresh & scrumptious shrimps, squid, salmon, oysters, scallops & clams. OMG!!!
I can not wait to go back there. I will be hard pressed to order anything else.
Two of my friends had seafood as well & they enjoyed their entrees immensely as well.
Even my vegatarian friends were both able to delight in their mufalata & eggplant parmasean, respectively.
The bread is delicious & served with excellent olive oil.
I had some of my friend's tiramisu & its super moist although Im not a big fan of tiramisu in general I can say that its very well prepared here.
Also, you are able to bring your own wine bottle.
Call ahead for reservations especially on a weekend night.
The service is very accomodating & hospitable considering they were also very busy they deserve props. -

Ok, I'm a little slow today... but at least I'm getting this done the same day as the visit instead of 2 months later.
As you can probably guess, I went to Aboca's for lunch today. I had the same spinach salad as Jenn and I shared the crostada thing she ordered with her.
I wasn't as impressed with the spinach salad as I had hoped. The gorgonzola was extremely potent and the balsamic vinagarette didn't seem to have enough punch to calm it down. I did pick off the proscuitto off the salad... I would have much rather had bacon or pancetta.
The Crostada thing, on the other hand was very good. I would go back here just for that.
I did, want to figure out a way to lay down on the ceiling because Jenn wasn't kidding... it looked exactly like a lumpy black leather couch. Being the day before a long weekend.... I really needed a nap.
*Oh wait, I haven't worked a 5 day week since May. Anyway, I still needed a nap. -

After the pleasant surprise of little neighborhood Italian eatery Venizia, I was really looking forward to dining at Aboca after it was recommended by a friend. Wow! What a great first impression. The food was delicious, the portions too large to finish and the personal attention superb. However.....
Have you ever had a really good first date only to watch it start to unravel by Date #2? Aboca, so attentive on the first visit, seemed disinterested during subsequent meals, almost like that date who texts his/her friend throughout the evening. On the last visit, a half-empty weekday, our pasta took more than 30 minutes. Since I was seated directly across from the kitchen, I could see one poor cook toiling by himself back there while the owners/chefs stood chatting nearby. The server, albeit nice, really made no effort to check on our food or provide status.
Sadly, I think it's safe to say that we have broken up with Aboca. I might see it again but only if it was at the request of others....and the only if we were not starving because Aboca is a date that will keep you waiting forever while it gets ready. -

The service here is atrocious. Long waits to order, for food, and for the check after trying to get the server's attention. They were about half full at the time.
The restaurant is in a strip mall on the service road, but its surprisingly nice inside. The atmosphere is intimate and its decorated really nicely, with a bookshelf with cookbooks and a stone pathway down the center of the dining room. I had bruschetta, which was just bread with cheese on it. I really thought bruschetta was bread with some kind of pesto and tomato on top, but it was still very good.
The portions are really large, and they seem to go heavy on the main course and light on the pasta. I ended up taking about half of my chicken parmigiana home.
Overall this place is a better pick than some of the chain Italian places, and its always good to support local business. Again, though, maybe this was a one-time experience but the service wasnt great. -

We found Aboca's while visiting in Dallas. We went there two nights in a row. Outstanding service and food. The special the first night was sea bass and it was the best I've ever had. Light, flaky and excellent taste. My wife had veal marsala and it too was up there with the best. Came back the next night and had eggplant parmigiana and the sicilian shrimp. Both were excellent. Bring your appetite - large portions, reasonable prices. As others have posted, the bread and dipping oil is awesome. We had the appetizer sampler both nights and enjoyed it all. Chris and Tony are very friendly and had us sample the Tiramisu - to good to describe in words! Will definitely be going back next time we are in Dallas. And it's BYOB - no corkage fee, just $1 per wine glass!

BYOB. That always makes a place pretty fantastic in my book. If it is a Saturday night, you definitely need to make a reservation. We went in at 8 and it was packed! Thankfully the people we were with were familiar enough with the place and made reservations. They had a special for a 12oz filet which my husband ordered. It was much larger than 12 oz.. Seriously, it was double that size. A pleasant surprise for everyone at the table that ordered the steak. Also, the appetizer sampler was delicious. Even the mussels, and I don't really like mussels. The chicken Tuscana (another special of the night) and the chicken Marsala were quite delicious. Simple flavors and large portions will make this a frequent dining spot for us when visiting Plano.

I LOVE this place! One of my friends introduced me to it earlier this year, and now I go once a month even though it's 25 minutes from my apartment. It's hard to find a non-chain Italian restaurant that's very good and affordable, but this place is perfect. You get good-sized portions, the food is very tasty, and 2 people can easily eat there for less than $25, including non-alcoholicdrinks. Not to mention, their bread and oil is the BEST I've ever had. The desserts are yummy too. I've eaten there with friends and my boyfriend many times plus thrown a birthday party there with 20 people and never had a bad experience! The head manager, Tony, is very nice! P.S. If you want super fast service, go to a Mexican restaurant. This is a classic Italian restaurant where you sit, eat, enjoy some wine, and have good conversation!

Order the Sampler Appetizer and the only good thing was the bruschetta. the calamari was rubbery, scampi was to acidic , breading of the cheese was not good. basically th e whole dish was frozen and fried to order. I order the Sicilian risotto and i watch alot of Gorden Ramsey and what i got look like fried rice MUSH. the shrimp tasted old calamari rubbery and sausage was bland. the rice itself was not cooked all the way. i thought this would be better than olive garden and boy was i wrong. STAY AWAY FROM THESE TWO items i orderd. the bread and oil was good

For the food, this place would get 10 stars if YELP allowed it. I mean, the bread and olive oil taste so good that I couldn't control myself. I am craving it again now, days later! My meal was probably the best Italian meal I've had in my life--I didn't want it to end. The service was also very good and friendly. The ONLY reason I couldn't give Aboca's five stars is because my first two rolls of silverware were dirty. Thank goodness the third was clean, because man, was that meal ever great!

Having grown up in Richardson, I have a lots of friends whose parents are still there-- and this is everyone's mom's favorite Italian place north of 635. After all the hype, I'll confess I had high expectations when I took my mother there for a birthday. Our wait on a Saturday night was almost an hour. Which of course made us over-order in our misguided starved state. I can't remember specifically each dish we had, but can warrant that it was all just ok. Nothing great, nothing actually bad. Portions are huge. Prices are reasonable. About what you'd expect from a Richardson neighborhood favorite.

I have no idea why this place is so popular. We went on a Friday night. Mostly elderly clientele. The greeter at the door informed us they did not have kids menus, they would have to order off the one menu. Server very nicely said we could order a kid's size portion of any of the pastas. Salads were ok. The bread and olive oil dipping sauce was a nice touch. Food? Ehhh. Husbands meatballs had that gummy texture you get from frozen meatballs. My cannelloni was a round of pizza dough wrapped burrito like around a meat and spinach filling. What? Where was the pasta tube that this should have come in? It was terribly gummy, there was no cheese inside and it was served floating in alfredo sauce. Yuck. The whole experience wasn't 'bad'. No one got sick. But we will NOT be going back.

It's a cute lil' Italian restaurant without all the excessive frills from Olive Garden or Carino's. The bread and salad was fresh and delish... the meal itself was okay, nothing extravagant. The food isn't heavy and didn't leave me feeling like I was about kneel over and beg for Pepto. Overall a good experience :)

We eat here often. I love the Chicken Aboca and my husband loves the scallop risotto. They also do calamari very well. I was less enthusiastic about their somewhat mushy eggplant parm and overcooked shrimp. On the down side, they only have a few high chairs, lines are often long, and the service is sometimes slow. We keep wanting to try the pizza, but always end up trying a new entree instead. Overall, food is good and prices are reasonable. We've never been disappointed.

This is a small real Italian place. The food is uuuummmmm gggooooddd. Everything that I have tried so far is great. I tell my favorite server to just bring me something. He gives me a little smile and out of the kitchen he brings old fashioned style full flavored Italian meals. Be sure to bring someone and share I huge portion of the tiramisu. After eating the tiramisu, you will go to bed with a smile on your face. It is a BYOB place, so bring your own favorite Chianti.

I am responding to Glenn S's review of 8/16/09. His review scarred me out of my wits. While my wife and I don't go to Aboca's OFTEN we have always (for the past 4 years, anyway) counted on it to be there, to offer a tasty meal at a bargain price, and to provide us a pleasant experience. It was on our schedule tonight until I read Glenn's review and another negative reiveiw on another site. We initially decided to not go to Aboca's and then chaned our minds. I am so glad we did. It maintains the 3 attributes listed above. We arrived at 7:15 on this Monday evening. The house was 80 percent full. By 7:20 we had been seated, had our water and bread, had ordered, and had the wine we brought opened and poured. Two mintes later our salads were served. Our entres (manicotti for her and Sicilian risoto for me) arrived the moment we finished our salads. The food was delicious if not inventive and the portions were ample (we each brought home 1/2 of our serving). The fact that we brought our own wine was the cherry on the cake. We were relieved to reaffirm what we had experienced on our first date, and second and third.....FoodFossil
