Any lover of Jewish Deli's MUST go to Abe's Kosher Delicatessen while in Scranton, PA. The owner was there and what a fantastic, sweet, welcoming man!
The prices are at least 1/2 of what they are in NYC or LA Kosher Deli's! I asked the owner how he keeps his prices so low and he said its hard, but he tries his best!
I had matzah ball soup (balls arent the best but the broth was flavored well and not too salty!) and a corn-beef reuben. The corn-beef was almost like well-done bacon! The bread was super greasy and the sauer kraut was plentifull ... ok maybe doesnt SOUND so great, but trust me, amazing to eat!
I also took a bag of Community Baked Rasberry Ruggalah. LOVING THEM AT MY HOTEL RIGHT NOW! -

Tucked away in the downtown area surrounding University of Scranton, is this quaint little family owned deli, Abe's Kosher Delicatessen. While visiting Scranton for work, the crew and I followed this recommendation and we were glad we did. One of the best pastrami reuben sandwiches I've ever had. As a matter of fact, there was not one complaint - all great reviews.
Don't be fooled by the clientele, it skews much older (I think the average age in Scranton is 40+), this dive is a great choice for young professionals and students alike. -

Stopped into Abe's for breakfast during a road trip to Chicago. The restaurant itself was very clean and comfortable, the food was excellent - eggs and fresh fruit - and the staff was very friendly.

I wouldn't have a problem if they called it "Abe's Kosher STYLE Deli". However, if you actually keep kosher you can't eat here because they're not kosher! We saw a container of milk sitting out on the counter, right next to where they prepare the meat. I asked the man behind the counter if they had a rabbinic supervision certificate and he had no idea what that was, and had to go get another employee who informed us that no, they're not actually kosher. Very disappointing that they're advertising themselves as something they're not.

Great deli! Fresh ingredients, awesome service, fair prices. If I lived in the area, this would be a regular spot.

Abe's Deli will satisfy the taste of nearly any customer. They serve great typical American breakfasts and NY-style Kosher dishes, and even offer some Middle Eastern meals. Everything is FRESH as can be, and the restaurant is very clean. Their large assortment of salads are made every day, as well as most of their meats.
I really recommend their vegetable omelet with cheese for breakfast, and make sure to try the Filafel. It's awesome.
Abe's offers a different special every day, so make sure to ask. They are also willing to whip up just about anything you can think of, so don't be afraid to ask... -

Abe's has just about everything a small deli could offer. The food varies from traditional american dishes to middle eastern goodness. Jerry, the owner is usually there and all of the staff is friendly for the most part while making serving the customer priority number one. The food is always fresh and the items behind the display share consistency and diversity with some staple dishes like macaroni salad and potato salad. The portions are just right and the food comes quickly whether eating in or ordering delivery.
I recommend trying any of the desserts as well as the middle eastern sampler platter...ask for extra pita though. Do not expect anything off the grill on a Saturday and have fun with what you choose to eat. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner are all wonderful at Abe's. I love breakfast so I am a little biased. -

Grew up on Abe's living in the area. The owner and my dad were friends and I went to school with his kids. Great family!
It's impossible to find a place like this down in the DC metro area. If you live in NYC you are lucky and can get this anywhere.
I always get the same thing. Matzoh ball soup, hot corned beef on rye, and some halava for desert. They also have the classic Dr Brown's cream soda which is a must for this meal.
The bread is always fresh and the corned beef is piled high. So good! I used to crush at least 2 of these and sometimes 3. I could go for one right now! -

New York, NY
Hungry on the highway we bypassed the crappy fast food and yelped our way to this old-school deli five minutes from the off ramp. The pickles alone were detour worthy, the homemade coleslaw was the culmination of cabbage and for the pastrami/corned beef/tongue combo on rye there are no words.

This Place is AMAZING!
We stopped here during a 9 hour car ride from New England to Northern VA. Scranton is half way and we received a recommendation to stop here. I have been wanting to go to a Jewish Deli for a while now. It was total providence, because the only time I have ever rolled through scranton, it was late and on a Sunday. The only day they are open late! As a Theology major, this was a treat to have the experience of kosher eating.
Ambience: Completey Immaculate 50's diner looking deli. This place was very well kept. The owner has the most endearing foreign accent and he's very sweet! The counter has a deli case filled with eye candied of meets, salmon, pate, salads, and all kinda of jewish delights.
Service: Wonderful Very lovely waitress, who minded what we ordered and changed plates in accordance with the Kosher laws. She offered me more tea, simply lovely!
Food: OH MY GOODNESS. The corned beef is phenomenal. Best rueben I ever tasted. I also ordered kugel, which was sort of like a potato cake/bread. I wanted to try something new. It was good, but my gentile palate maybe was expecting something different. On my way out I bought half a pound of corned beef, two bags of bagels, chicken liver pate, and rugala.
Menu: was VERY extensive: kishkas, meatballs, potato pancakes, pate sandwiches. I wish I could go back again and again and try it all. You are very blessed if you live in Scranton!
Please support this wonderful cultural gem and a small business owner! Sorry to natter so much. I just love this place! -

Three of us visited Abe's Deli on Oct. 22, 2011 and had a great lunch. Their chopped liver is made from chicken liver not the cheaper beef liver and it was very good. It was the speicial of the day so a cup of soup was included at no extra charge; I choose the beef barley soup and it was excellent. Others in my party had the pastrami sandwich on rye and matzah ball soup and the other had sliced turkey sandwich and the beef barley soup. Prices were very reasonable for the high quality of food served.

Still love this place...but don't eat here during passover, unless you celebrate passover that is...reason being - they won't serve you bread...and eating sandwiches on Matza is no fun....unless u like Matza.

The food is tasty, but the Kosher nonsense is a big turnoff. I do not appreciate having my coffee cup snatched away and replaced with a fresh cup with non-dairy creamer when my breakfast plate arrives at my table. They should really inform you of this unpleasant surprise when you place your order instead of assuming that you are familiar with the rules.

Stopped by here on the drive to Washington D.C. and was very surprised! I've never been to a legit delicatessen before so that was a bonus. I had the pastrami reuben and it was delicious! I especially enjoyed the pickle which, from what I could taste, they pickle themselves. I also had the potato pancakes which I enjoyed too. The staff was very friendly as well.

This place was a Sunday morning tradition for us for years. The food is delicious Jewish Deli fare and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I've never eaten there on a Saturday so I can't recommend that day of the week but every other day it's open is wonderful!
