This place defines "greasy spoon," but in a very, very, very good way. The eggs benedict and biscuits and gravy were probably the best I've ever had, anywhere. The coffee is delicious, and the waitresses are very keen on keeping your cup filled. Other people have described the process of waiting for a table (the restaurant itself is teeny tiny) and I am very grateful for my fellow yelpers instructions. I have yet to try this place on a weekend, but just a heads up, we waited for about 20 minutes on a Thursday mid-morning. Once we got seated, the service was prompt. We particularly enjoyed the people-watching here. One highlight was an elderly gentleman pulling out a full-sized desk calculator to figure out his tip.

Ok, so my husband and I have eaten here just about every sunday since we moved to the area in November 2010. If you are looking for a chic and stylish 'brunch' experience, this will not be the place for you. If you can look past the shabby interior and long line to have a breakfast that will rival 'Mom's' on her best day...you are finally home!
I was almost hesitant to post a review since this is our favorite hidden gem (hidden in location more than reputation) and I would hate to see the already long line on Sunday morning get any longer. But...my eggs are cooked to perfection every single time and it's necessary to order a side of French Toast whether you are hungry or not because it's just that good. This place is packed for a reason.
The service is a regular crew that works as a super efficient and friendly team, and I have not yet had a meal in which Abel himself was not working behind the grill. It's nice to see an establishment in which the owner still has passion for what he does...it shows in the end result! -

Abel's is one of my weekly hangouts. I'm there just about every Sunday morning with a paper in hand for breakfast. It's a great home cooking place that is always crowded. Abel is usually working the grill and the kitchen is open - just a half wall with some warmer lamps for rolls separates it from the dining area.
It is a little difficult to get here - you can only get to it from the I-35 Southbound access road. If you are coming from I-35 North, take the
3009/Natural Bridge caverns exit, turn left back over 35, then go past the Valero station and in the Wal-Mart parking lot on your right. You can get to the southbound access road through there.
Seating is very limited and on a first come, first serve system. Just to give you an idea of how it works:
1) Line up outside the door on the covered walkway area. The other side is for to-go orders to come in and pick up. I highly recommend getting a paper from the paperbox around the corner (facing I-35).
2) Enter the exterior door area. Don't keep the inner doors open!
3) Enter the diner. Stay and wait for a table to be wiped. Place bets as to who will leave first and if you will get a booth or table.
I should add that the food is amazing - always freshly prepared and exactly what you asked for. A great alternative to the endless IHOPs and Dennys along I-35.Listed in: You're Awesome, You Rock, Stay…

This place was difficult to rate as it really did not deserve a 4 star rating, but not quite good enough for a 5 star rating.
Abel's diner follows the standard formula for a top notch restaurant: a simple menu with no more than 7 entrees and 7 sandwiches but focus on scratch made ingredients and great prices. Went here with the misses who had the Chicken Fried Chicken while I settled on the Fried Catfish. Both were stellar as they were moist and flavorful. Service was friendly considering we were here during the lunch rush. Place was small and seating was seat yourself as the table was bused. Prices were ridiculous considering the portion sizes. Although they are open 7 days a week, breakfast service ends 1100 on weekdays and 1130 on weekends.
Note they are located on the southbound portion of the I-35 access road. If getting off going Northbound, make the right on FM 3005, turn right into the parking lot of the Super Walmart, cut through, and turn right again onto the access road. Abel's is in the same complex as the the Texas Pecan Sweets shop and just before the gas station. -

I went with a group for an early lunch on a Sunday at Abel's Diner. It was full when we arrived, but we pounced on a table as soon as it was free. Listen folks - this place is TINY. It's not going to be easy to get a table during peak meal times, so plan accordingly.
The food is quite good and you can watch the food being made from most spots in the restaurant. I ended up getting a club sandwich and it was one of the better ones that I've had. Their hamburgers are in more of an oval shape than a round burger, but my wife really enjoyed hers.
Overall, I'd highly recommend a trip to Abel's. -

Went there for breakfast - for the price, the food is good. The eggs were cooked well, which is a big thing for me - if the eggs are not cooked perfectly, I will get grossed out and not eat my breakfast - so they get big points for that. The bacon was cooked to a crisp (on the verge of being TOO crispy) and the biscuit was delish. But the potatoes were over-cooked; I tried eating them but had to stop after a few.
I don't think I will eat here again, but if you're looking for cheap breakfast, then you might as well eat here. -

Sometimes, when I'm in the San Antonio area, I forget how different it is from the Austin area. Places like Abel's remind me.
This is some serious down home cooking. Forget veggies that are health and not boiled the hell out of. This is some serious southern style food. We're talking chicken fried steak, catfish, sandwiches taller than my head sort of food.
The waitstaff was awesome-- patient and playful, which is a must when I'm with my rents. They're characters.
Unfortunately, and I blame this as much on my recent attempt as a health kick as on Abel's, it didn't really leave me feeling settled. Ah well.
One last note, Google lied to be about where this place was, which made for some interesting moments trying to track it down... -

Ok I guess I am in the minority here when it comes to Abel's. Although the wait staff service was exceptionally good, I was not impressed with the food at all.
Overcooked and virtually tasteless is about as nice as I can be when it comes to the food. Had it been only me dining there I would think it was just a fluke, but I was 1 in a party of 5 and no one was pleased with the food.
Service was very good. Quick with the refils and constant attention from the waitress. Prices are very reasonable, but considering my experience I would have rathered to pay more somewhere else for better food.
We have not been back again since and I can honestly say that I can not see me giving them a second chance. Normally I will write off one bad experience as it possibly having just been a "bad day". This time however, I think I'll let my first impression be my last. -

Tiny! The Eggs Benedict were cooked to PERFECTION!!! The best is there homemade biscuits, with our without gravy they are AWESOME!!! Good service, cheap prices ... I am a fan and plan on going there again especially after I overheard the cook say "I love cooking more than I do eating" ... I guess it's a good thing I love eating more than cooking :)

From the moment we received our coffee, we never had to ask our waitress for a refill of coffee or anything else for that matter as she was right on top of our needs and she did so like she enjoyed serving us.
These days it is rare to get not only reasonably priced good food, but also great service with happy waitstaff who clearly enjoy what they do. I am happy to report that Abel's Diner excels in all of these areas and I will become a regular any time I am in San Antonio, Texas. -

Schertz, TX
Very fast service and they actually do take care of the customer, which is rare these days. Awesome food and most prepared there and not pre-cooked. I wil return many times because it's delish and I like the 'down home' type of food served at this restaurant. Very reasonable priced. Be forewarned, when I say "down home" style I mean "down home yonder by the barn" type of cooking.

La Vergne, TN
This is one of those itty bitty restaurants that is always full. And the home-cooking styled food is precisely why. Be prepared; there will be a lot of older folks there. But don't let that fool you, there's a reason why, and its a good one! Definitely try the Chicken fried Chicken! Its delish!

The place is tiny tiny tiny, and kind of grungy. The food was good however, pretty much everything is a la carte so it adds up quick! You must go earlier than 930 to get a seat!

Abel's rocks - it always has. The food is always good, breakfast, lunch or dinner. The staff is always great - you'll never have an empty glass. And you can't beat the prices anywhere. We've been eating at Abel's since the early 90's and don't see stopping anytime soon!

GREAT FOOD! The food is home cooked, amazing and you get generous portions. I took my friend who was visiting from out of state and he literally wanted to go back the next day. He now wants to go there for his birthday. You get these warm homemade rolls, that are like biscuits. You get a fresh side salad for .99 extra. My friend got the smothered chicken w/ onions, mushrooms and cheese and he said it was the best he ever had. Chicken cooked perfectly. Came with a loaded baked potato and even the side of corn was good. I got a smothered pork cutlet w/ gravy and it was crispy and not greasy and cooked perfectly inside. The service is excellent and so friendly. I had not been there in over a year and the waitress recognized me. It's one of those small family owned diners that you can not pass up. Just try the food and you won't regret it. The dinners are all under $10. The spinach salad is even good. Everything is homemade and you can tell. But the lunch hour is very packed and there's nowhere to wait for a table except outside. Go on a weekday early in the week, before they close at 9pm and there's no one there. They have a small limited menu, but every entree is great as I've tried many of them from a chicken sandwich to fish. It's worth the drive to Schertz!!!
