If only the apple pie slices were served piping hot, oh boy that would make it a wonder.  But I can see how that's not feasible.  I'm fine with them microwaving it to heat it up!!

Now the real treat here are the APPLE DONUTS.  Sure, there are signs that say they're famous but when you see a selection of 10+ apple pies, you quickly forget about the $0.75 donut.  Even when it's cold, it's so moist and doughy.  I LOVE IT.  I should've bought a box of a dozen -- my biggest regret.  The outside is lightly sugared and it's the perfect size to eat as a snack.

Definitely try the pumpkin apple pie.  Can't imagine what that's like? You're literally eating those two in one.  Imagine a pumpkin pie filling with slices of apple throughout, all with a crumbly top.  Bringing this to a potluck is like bringing the homemade but without the effort (your own that is).

If all the fruit stops on Apple Hill leave you wanting something savory, the stand right outside of Abel's has delicious garlic fries!

First off, I was all about trying the different apple orchards.  My son wasn't in the mood the first time we went up, so we just went to Boa Vista since it was one of the closer ones.  We went up on another day to cruise through the different ones.  Since my husband wanted to come here the first time, we ended up coming here first the next time around.

We step out and we notice it's a lot more crowded compared to Boa Vista.  Both had little craft booths but boy, Abel's was bustling with blue hairs and little kids.  They had a lot more crafters here and a lot more food products in their actual store.  However, what ruined it for me was the OLD LADY workers!  I have nothing aganist old ladies except those mean ones.  My husband and I bought some fudge from the shop and seriously, the lady was so mean.  She never smiled during the whole transaction.  She was like what do you want?  Seriously!  She hated her life or something because she seems like we were doing her a disservice.  All of the workers had scowls on their faces!

I guess I just had too good of an experience at Boa Vista that Abel's Acres wasn't having any of it... next time, I'll stick to Boa Vista... oh and their caramel apples were a dollar more here!

This place was even more packed than Boa Vista. There are so many activities for the kids - pony/horse rides (2 rounds for $6), maze ($3), mini car course for the lil tykes, BAKERY, Fudge, art and craft vendors, and giftshop.  Staff are very nice as well.  Lots of apple varieties and price per pound is not bad at all!

TIP:  When you get inside the gift store, fall in line for a slice of their apple pie (with scoop of ice cream)!  The pie is stuffed with apples - sweet, tart, firm and juicy apple slices.  The crust is flaky and buttery.  They put a HUGE scoop of vanilla ice cream next to the pie.  My only wish would be to have been lucky enough to get a warm apple pie.  Lots of frozen pies to take home.  I saw this family take a cart load of pies (Apple/Cherry, Apple Rhubarb, and Classic apple pies).

Expect it to be busy on the weekends but a great way to spend time with family and friends.

The frozen and fresh baked pies are wonderful!  I purchase a few frozen pies each october which we use for thanksgiving diner. My frozen favs are blueberry and strawberry rhubarb. Baked pies that are just to die for are Carmel Pecan apple.

The fair venders are there thru thanksgiving. Very cute and unique shops including the indian reservation jewelry vendor. Bought some hand made copper bracelets.

    Have fun !

I have put off writing this review for over two years, because as wisely put by another yelper, to write about a truly bad experience force you to relive it.

Two years ago, I made one of the worst ordering decisions of my life. After hiking around the area a bit with my then boyfriend we stopped at Abel's for a bite. Abel's is one of the main stops in apple hill, in the past I had heard many good reviews including from a my coworkers loves it so much she holds her stand here every autumn. I ordered the Philly cheese stake, I didn't expect anything fancy just a bun with a couple slices of meat and cheese, and if I was lucky some onion or bell pepper. What I got was an overpriced hot dog bun with a chunk of meat and canned NACHO CHEESE!? Since when is nacho cheese real cheese? They should have been paying me to eat this.

I thought this place was really cool.  I only wish we could have spent more time there!  We were looking for something fun to do, kid friendly, not too far...and we're old fashioned.  This fit the bill perfectly.  When the weather warms, we're definitely going back.  I'm going to starve myself for a week so I can eat whatever I want, because everything was very good.  Apple Donuts = yum.

I've only been here during Apple Hill season and it's always a madhouse.  This last year, I came on a particularly gorgeous Saturday afternoon, and as expected the shop was packed.  The employees were working rapidly to move the lines along.  I bought an apple-blueberry pie to bake at home and I am every so glad I did!  It is super delicious.  I can't wait to go back next year and get another.  :)

Came up here on a Saturday in early October.

Come in a SUV or car that is capable of bumpy dirt roads because nothing is paved. Glad we choose not to bring our coupe.

The first thing you notice as you approach the entrance after you get out of the car is the amazing smell of Apple pie.

We were not prepared for the crowds but I guess it just shows that this is one of the more desired stops in Apple Hill.

We were excited about trying the wide variety of different caramel apple coatings, but very disappointed to find that they were made with Golden Delicious apples. The combination of super-sweet coating and super-sweet apples was way too much. We could only eat a slice of each that we bought. I prefer a tarter apple if you're going to cover it with candy. Crisp, though. The donuts there have very good texture, but I like the flavor and variety better at High Hill.

Abel Acres is one of my favorite little spots in Apple Hill and is always a go-to for my family and I. They always have an amazing array of caramel apples, fudge, apple pies, apple bread, packaged sauces, etc. During high season they also have a fun mini veggie 'market' in the back to pick up some fresh, local fruits and veggies. I always like to make this place one of my last stops since I know I'll be leaving with goodies to take home!

Visited this place a couple of times and last time picked up a fresh strawberry rhubarb apple pie and a frozen classic apple pie. They have a small shop there which features various apple themed products and candies and other miscellaneous goodies you can buy. Didn't do the orchard tour or eat in the restaurant. I just wish they were open longer, but only a few orchards up there are open year 'round.

Both pies were excellent and I'd definitely frequent the orchard shop whenever an apple pie mood strikes me. Oh! And if you forget and leave your quarter eaten pie too close to the edge of your counter, your dogs will enjoy the apple pie too!

    1 word: CROWDS

Get ready to wait in line at this place. The pie is FABULOUS, especially the ones with the crumbs. OMG. Seriously good.  But the lines... and parking...sometimes it's not worth it. If you drive by and the parking lot looks a little empty, go ahead and go in.

The little snack/shop is great. their bbq sandwich is really good and so are the garlic fries. Definitely get this, but again LINES.

They have a whole lot of things to do here.  They usually have a small little hay maze, pony rides, petting zoo, pumpkin patch, toddler playground and a bunch of little vendors. Prices are ok, but LINES! Can you tell I hate lines?

Came the Sunday after Thanksgiving and it was a pleasant crowded. I think I came here the day before Christmas last year and it was dead and freezing, even snowed! So imagine my surprise when it's warm and full of people =]

$0.75 for the apple doughnut and very yummy and fresh. I just didn't like how slow the counter people are.
There's a patio where they sell other food too and lots of outdoor seating. (Last year the fireplace inside was going full blast.) A handful of tented vendors with their crafts for sale. And everything apple you could want. Apple butter, apple pies (like 8 kinds), apple fritters, apple dumplings, apples baked with caramel on top, apple crisp, apple cobbler, apple juice, apple apples, oh and my mother liked what i called diabetes on a stick. It looks like 3 marshmallows covered in caramel... i can feel my teeth cringing individually. eep.

If the parking lot is full the overflow parking is right across the street and its so close. Definitely one of our stops.

A little busy for my liking and I did not enjoy most of the "craft tents" that were mostly selling cheap junk they bought.  I did love the gift shops and bakery!  They have the best Apple Doughnuts on Apple Hill!  We also got a frozen crumb top pie I cannot wait to bake up and try at home for $13!

Back in the day, when we lived in Southern CA, we used to go to Julien California for the Apple Pies and adventure. We'd ride the buggy down the main drag, try on every hat at the General Store and laugh our Rumpelstiltskin's off.

So when my sister came up here to visit, I looked for something similar. My coworker used to take a couple of days off every autumn to go to "Apple Hill," and raved about how wonderful it was.

So I grabbed everyone and we headed out on our adventure. From Vallejo, it wasn't too bad of a drive. 45 minutes from Vallejo to Sacramento and another 25 minutes from Sacramento to Apple Hill.

It was really easy to find Abel's. Unfortunately we went during the middle of the week and so nothing much was happening. We wandered around the big barn, freezing off all of our extremities. Right now I'm typing with my nose (ha, ha).

Anyway, we got some really nice artsy "home-style" crafts for very reasonable prices. Then we figured out where to pay (really no service to speak of) and pre ordered our desserts.

We went out on the deck and froze our tail feathers while we ate our lunch. It was really cold, but the view was very nice.

We went back to get our desserts (I had an apple dumpling and my sister had the pumpkin/apple pie. ((Only drawback... they don't give samples, which kinda sucks if you're being adventuresome and trying something new)). Our treats were heated up and we enjoyed them in front of the wood stove they have in the center of the "barn."

I purchased an "Apple Crisp" to take home for $11.95.  It was in the freezer with a selection of all of their frozen pies.  The price seemed good and the product was easy to prepare at home and was very good.  The other place we visited (Larsons) also had pies, and the prices were less, but don't know if they were any good or not.

Abel's Acres is listed in the Apple Hill Growers Guide, on various maps, and on their street sign as Apple Hill Grower #38.

Apple Hill is a few mile east of Placerville, CA "Old Hangtown" and is the home to a large number of fruit orchards, pumpkin patches and Christmas tree farms.  The peak season is Labor Day to Christmas.  If you are not visiting during peak season call ahead to see what is open so you are not wasting a trip or winding up disappointed.

I really like Abel's because it has a lot of kids activities (straw maze, pony rides and other activities) combined with a smaller over all operation.  It does get crowded at times, but the BBQ fare, excellent pie and nice assortment of Apple Hill products makes for a one-stop-shop type location.  They offer enclosed gazebos for dining keeping the flies and other pests away from your plates.  I am a pie fanatic and Abel's has a larger selection of pies including one of my favorites: Buttermilk Berry & Apple!

Abel's has ample parking on site and across the street in lot (be careful crossing the road).

Lots of "NO DOG" signs so leave fido at home or in the car (if it is not too hot).

Just went to Apple Hill, not realizing it was the end of the apple season (hence not a great variety of fruit). Abel's Apples Acres stood out among the other orchards for having the best baked goods - no wonder the lines were so long. Definitely do get the apple donuts (my aunt from Michigan exclaimed they were better than the ones there), the doughy apple fritters and sky high apple pie. The apple pie caramel apple is delish, and I'm usually not a caramel apple eater.

The pony rides delighted kids, and when I've got a family someday, this will definitely be a stop. The craft fair was lame, and the garlic fries smelled amazing, reminiscent of Taylor's Refreshers garlic fries. Mmm.

    This place is fun.

We arrived around 9:15 and were parked and in without a hitch. Great snacks (honey sticks, carmel and candy apples) and great pastries and pies.

The apple donuts are TO DIE for. Light, fluffy, nice touch of cinnamon. Mmmmm... We took several with us and munched on them throughout the day.

Cute Halloween and Fall themed cutouts to pose for pictures with and lots of fun activities for little ones. A nice stop, but we didn't spend too long there.

Took the GF to Apple Hill on her BDay and I must say, we had fun.  Abel's Apple Acres was the first orchard we found, and was pretty interesting.  I'm not sure if they have this everyday, but they had a bunch of vendors set up outside.  I was able to purchase this unique place mat for hot items for a $1. Also, they have a petting farm and ponies that kids can ride for a fee.

Now for the food. One word to describe it, "WOW".  Everything we tried was one of a kind. I saw a sign mentioning they had Apple Donuts, WTF?  Never heard of an Apple Donut before.  So we tried it, and it melts in your mouth.  Really, really good, a must try.  Also the Pumpkin Apple pie was divine

We took a jug of Apple Juice home.  Usually, I'm not a big fan of apple juice, but this apple juice tastes just like apples!!  Man, just thinking about everything makes me hungry.  We may have to take a trip back to Apple Hill soon

I've been travelling to Tahoe for many yrs. and I've never bothered to stop at an apple farm.  My aunt has been raving about Abel's for a yr. now, so I decided a visit was due.  Since it was Veteran's Day weekend, I decided to head to Tahoe for a mini vacation.  It was Applemania, everything from homemade applesauce, apple butter to apple/pumpkin pie and buttermilk apple/berry pie.  They also have bbq sandwiches and hamburgers in the back.  I decided to purchase the apple/pumpkin pie, apple/pumpkin bread, and apple fritter.  The apple/pumpkin pie will be saved for later, so I bought the frozen one instead of the freshly baked. It sounded interesting and i love both pumpkin and apple, so the combination sounds lovely. The apple/pumpkin bread is definitely something that can be frozen and saved for the spring when I am craving the taste of fall.  The apple fritter is a "MUST TRY NOW," item.  It was great and a good balance of cinnamon, chunks of apples, and a crispy exterior.  My uncle is an apple fritter expert, so i gave him a piece and he was very impressed.  I think we will be making another stop later on this weekend!

Abel's Acres is one of the best places to go in Apple Hill for pie, because of their spectacular number of varieties to choose from. There are several kid-oriented features, which adds to the crowds, unfortunately. Still, there are many comfortable places to sit and relax and enjoy some chow. They have more variety for lunch than most farms in Apple Hill, sticking mostly to sandwiches and garlic fries. A solid choice at Apple Hill.

This was my first time of venturing up to Apple Hill.  It was beautiful.  The light dusting of snow on the ground, the awesome buttermilk apple pie and the rudest, bitchy lady.  Everything was going perfect.  Had my family with me and couldn't wait to explore.  The rude lady that works behind the counter where you can order your slice of pie obviously hates her job.  She was rude to the people in front of me and I was almost scared to give my order.  I hope management reads these reviews and takes action.  There is no reason that she needs to be as rude as she was.  She ruined our experience at Abel's.  She is damn lucky that the buttermilk apple pie saved the day.  I would recommend going and if she is rude to you, punch her in the throat.

Their website explains it more, they have tons of vendors on busy weekends. I went last Wednesday and it was perfect for me and my husband - not busy. We enjoyed a donut (super good cake) on the patio. I chose not to get a frozen pie here and get it at Boa Vista because the ones here have trans-fats.  They have lots of candy, fudge, all kinds of caramel apples but they are pricy.  Parking can be annoying on the weekend.  Lots of kids activities during the prime time.

This place is hard to miss ... look for the Godzilla size horse sculpture along Carson with a bunch of real horses walking around it.  It's a very cool addition to an otherwise plain field of wooden cut outs to pose behind. This is a great place for kids because they have a $3 admission for their maze (all day), horse rides, pony rides, make your own candle vendor, and the wooden cut outs. They also have several flavors of candied apples: white chocolate with sprinkles, cinnamon, caramel nut, caramel chocolate nut, plain chocolate.  They also have fudge and candy coated marshmallows.  On the other side are goods like frozen pies to take home, apple sauce, apple butter, apple cake, fresh apple donuts, and local honey.  In the balcony area  are several tables for you to enjoy some lunch.  Their apple walnut sandwich is a favorite of mine.  Try to come here in September rather than October. I once came here in October two years ago and even though it was hot in Sac, it was freezing up here.

It was a cold morning at Apple Hill but Abel's managed to inspire warmth and holiday among our little group of friends and family during our field trip to Abel's.  Everything about this place made me feel all homey and fall.  Never having been here, I instinctively made a bee line for the hot apple cider and apple fritters and donuts.  The lady behind the counter looked amused when I placed my order for "fried apple fritters and fried apple donuts."  She said, "aren't all fritters and donuts fried?"  She seemed irritated at first but eased into a smile when I said, "I guess it's like going into downtown Beijing and ordering Chinese food."  Activities ranging from make your own candles to pony rides were great diversions for the little kiddies in our party as we happily munched on our fritters while we watched them circle the track, beaming with the pride and joy common to little kids riding ponies for the first time.  We will make this trip to Abel's an annual tradition.

Pretty disappointed with lunch at Abel's Apple Acres. I went with a big group and most of us ordered the tri-tip or the pulled pork. The tri-tip was cold and they had no way to warm it. The pulled pork was good, but very greasy. The vendors didn't have much, but their prices were very reasonable. On the plus side  there was a lady who made ballon animals for the kids for free, and there was lots of covered/shady seating.
