Review from Tracie J.
Love this place. I have been going there for years though it's pretty far from my house. Anytime I find myself remotely close, I make a special trip.
I cannot speak to many dishes because I always get the same meal. Rib tips, candied yams, collard greens and cornbread. The sauce is so delish and the candied yams have just right sweetness. And the collards? Perfect. I have not been disappointed yet. The portions are huge and the seasoning is just right.
One day the hubster stepped out and ordered some shrimp fried rice. It was pretty standard. Not bad, but not spectacular. It kind of reminded us of any typical Chinese take-out. The listing above says they do take credit cares, but I've never known them to do this. So maybe to take cash just in case.
This is one of my favs. -

Yo!
If you are a thrill-seeker...or if you are a weirdo....or if you are not concerned with health standards...OR If you like eating in the hood along with the slight possibility of getting smacked in the head with a tube sock full of wood screws as you're walking from your car to the restaurant, then this place issafoyou.
Rumor has it the old dog who runs this joint has Hep C which adds a whole new twist to the dining experience.
Free advice: Take pictures here. Just don't eat here. -

My brother and I made a very deliberate, kind of out of the way, pit stop to see Abdullah. I've been an Abdullah fan since I was a wee lad. Images of this gladiator forking his opponents are ingrained in my psyche. Mmmmmmm. . . appetizing.
I knew this was Abdullah's restaurant, but I was not expecting him to be seated near the door greeting people as they come in. I was mesmerized. My brother and I quietly ordered the daily special from the buffet. The special comes with with your choice of two meats and three sides I believe.
I'll be honest. Witnessing the "Man from the Sudan" sitting a few feet away from us severely impaired from being a good judge of the food. Like I said, the special is served buffet style. I thought it was a little cold, but like I said--I was too star-struck to really care.
The flavor of the food (despite the temperature), however, was pretty rockin' to this traveling duo. The meats were nice and flavorful and the sides good. Of special note--were the collard greens. The cold food issue, however, is unfortunate. I'm more likely to order from the menu next time.
But yes. . . so I kept staring and quietly say to my brother (who is a fair bit younger than me), "that's him." Instant shock and he became equally entranced. Now we are both staring. I get up to get napkins, still staring. Abdullah addresses me. Next thing I know, we're taking photos with the legend and he's got my brother in a headlock. Now that's service!
Anyway--if you are a fan of Abdullah, this isn't a place you'll want to miss if you're near. My next visit, will yield a better review of the food. Of course, I'm not sure a bad review is a good idea--you could get forked!Listed in: Q - Hit Me with Some!

Get the tips, get the tips, GET THE TIPS. Did I mention that you should try the tips....they're pretty doggone good. If I'm honest then I might admit that one of my favorite things about visiting friends in the Cascades is that I KNOW we're going to get something from Abdullah's.
I don't know anything about the chinese food that's also sold here but I can definitely and happily vouch for the bbq.Listed in: Open up, Now WIDER...THERE YOU…

The march of death continues.
I was able to get to ATB's yesterday. I'm rarely in this area, but when I am it is always on Sundays. ATB's gets points just for being open on Sundays when other bbq places in the area aren't (JJ's, Shack on Main). I went to this one right off of Langford Parkway/Campbellton Rd., but there are 2 other locations that are nearby as well.
The restaurant is pretty cool - tons and tons of memorabilia and photos of Abdullah and all his wrestling buddies back in the day. There are lots of tables and booths inside and a few tables outside where you can eat. There is also a buffet set up on one side of the counter that appeared to have traditional southern food as well, but I'm not entirely sure. You order at the other side of the counter.
I ordered a rib plate (3 bones, 2 sides, choice of bread) and a large sweet tea ($11).
I wasn't entirely sure upon going but these are regular bbq ribs - not Chinese-style bbq ribs. I got 3 big, long, flat ribs slathered in sauce. The ribs came out really hot so I'm guessing they might have been finished in an oven. They were meaty but pretty lean which I really like. They had a little bit of a smoky, grilled taste to them. I liked the sauce as it had a pretty good flavor and wasn't too sweet. 2 shortcomings that I'm sure are connected: 1) I think the meat was a little tough in some spots 2) I think the ribs could be slightly better quality. Overall, I definitely enjoyed them and thought they were pretty tasty, but not quite as amazing as I had hoped. I'd get them again though for sure.
They had maybe 8 or so sides to choose from that were more like traditional Southern sides (okra, black eyed peas) than bbq sides (no stew, no baked beans). I got the mac & cheese and candied yams (orange-y goodness). The candied yams were pretty standard and good, but the m&c was weak - it tasted almost exactly like Kraft. I chose cornbread over white or wheat bread and received a pretty good hunk. I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually pretty good - it was moist and not dried out. The sweet tea was very sweet and just mediocre.
The price seemed slightly high to me, but I guess the ribs ARE pretty large and it's a good amount of food. I really can't comment at all on the Chinese food. Overall, I would say it's definitely worth hitting up if you are in the area but maybe not worth going out of your way for.

Anyone who was raised in Atlanta as a child of the 70's remembers TBS. One of the things that put TBS on the map was wrestling (or wrasslin' for those in the know). One of the most dominating men in the ring was Abdullah, the Butcher. The man was a legend. His trademark weapon was a fork and he would stab his opponent repeatedly with it.
I knew he was a local but several years ago he made an appearance at Dragon*Con for DC Wrestling. I hadn't thought about him in years till he got up in the ring and spork'ed his opponent! Yup. Plastic spork to the face, baby!
What does this have to do with food? He has his own restaurant! Abdullah the Butcher House of Ribs and Chinese! It is a bit off the beaten path, even for someone who lives on the south side of ATL but if you remember him at all, you should go try it. There are 3 locations around Atlanta but the restauraunt I tried is located off Campbellton Rd, outside 285.
The BBQ is good. Try the rib tips but be careful eating them, if you've never eaten them before. The sides are tasty. Portions are Abdullah-sized, which is big!
Usually you will find Adbullah himself at the restaurant. Go on over and shake the big guys hand. He may even put you in a choke-hold for old time's sake! -

I loved the Pro Wrestling memorabilia. I was a pro wrestling geek for a long time. I've grown out of it, but I do like to go back to the old times. It was kinda scary I could recognize almost all the wrestlers' photos on the walls.
The food here isn't great. It's your typical greasy Chinese food and ribs. The main attraction is to meet the Madman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher. But he was never there when I went there. :( I wanted to take a picture with him with him digging a fork into my forehead. Oh well.
If Abdullah isn't there, then all you're left is mediocre food. At least the wrestling memorabilia is cool. But I don't think I'll be going back soon. It is out of the way and the food isn't good enough to try to catch Mr Butcher the chance he's there.
2 stars for the food +.5 for the nostalgic Wrestling stuff for the old Wrestling geek.Listed in: OTP places, My Chinese Food List

The food is just alright & kind of overpriced, but I'd have a much better rating if I actually got to see Abdullah while I was there.
Is there any particular day of the week that he frequents the one on Fairburn? -

I've recently heard of Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs and since it was close, got some carry out. I was surprised by how unseasoned everything was. The ribs and, most notably, the rib tips were very fatty. Even the chicken had a vague hickory taste but no real seasoning.
On a positive note, their baked beans and cornbread are tasty. But they need some work on the macaroni & cheese. And their barbecue sauce is pretty pedestrian.
I've had better experience buying cooked ribs from Kroger and doctoring them up a bit. Disappointed to say the least. -

It's been a few years since I ventured out to this BBQ/Chinese food joint, but it's still one of my fondest BBQ memories to date. The full name of the place is Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food. The Chinese fare was around the quality of something you'd find at Panda Express, but the BBQ pit churned out some of the best tasting BBQ chicken and ribs that I've ever had. Quite simply, the meat is just falling off the bone with that perfect smoky flavor. Be wary of the "fresh squeezed" lemonade - tasted like it came out of a jug from Kroger.
Manning the pit outside is none other than Abdullah the Butcher - retired professional wrestler and master BBQ chef (who would've guessed it?). If you're a wrestling fan, you'll also appreciate the decor inside, with photos of those that graced the squared circle. To complete the experience, for our visit, Abdullah even picked up one of our friends for a body slam!
My only regret is not going more often before I left Atlanta... -

The food here is gross (except for the fried okra, which is OK) so only go here for the weird-o factor -- especially if you're an old school wrestling fan.

i had a very precious opportunity to visit this restaurant in an underdeveloped area of Atlanta by my self one afternoon. It was 3:30pm and there was one Korean couple in the restaurant beside me, total 3 customers. The cashier man was the son of Mr. Butcher. He is very polite and he had Mr. Butcher's eyes. I ordered a Chinese dish and while I was eating, Mr. Butcher arrived in the parking lot. I went out and met him for the first time although I have seen him on TV so many times when I was a kid in Japan. First thing he said was, "Is your family okay in Japan? How are people doing in Japan after the earthquake?" He was a very soft spoken and gentle person to my surprise. The Chinese food, was okay, but the hospitality of both the son of Mr. Butcher and and Mr. Butcher himself was very impressive. Next time I am in Atlanta, I will go back there and try their barbecue rib.

Abdullah is alleged to have Hepatitis C. Any restaurant where owner or employees has that ought to be shut down. Eat at your own risk. I wouldn't.

Went to Abdullah's about 3 times, each time I left sick. Something about the meat, or the sauce, or something he uses. The Chinese food was actually pretty good, so I decided to only get that when/if I return. The place is nicely decorated, and if you remember Abdullah when he was wrestling, it'll be a real treat for you.
