I can sum it up in one word, Ben.
I don't know what I was thinking when I called a H&AC company that was NOT from Angie's List. Angie's List ROCKS! The technician that came out quoted me $804 dollars to clean out all the blockages in the coil, replace the filters and bring the system back to "factory fresh." I thought that was steep and told him I would get back to him. That visit was $119.00.
I remembered I had joined Angie's list so I logged in and found ABC Cooling and Heating. They had all positive reviews so I figured I would give them a try. Ben came out the very next day. It was a Saturday! The visit was $59.00 to assess what could be wrong. He went through the unit with a fine tooth comb and could not substantiate what I had been previously told by the other company. The problem was simply a flip of a switch. The unit had been turned off and I didn't even know there was a switch there. I just knew about the breaker.
Ben was very knowledgeable about the unit and took the time to explain in detail how everything worked and what to look for should it stop working again. I swear I wanted to hug him when he left and I am a dude. Not only did he save me money but he educated me. I will NEVER go to anyone else for my H&A needs again. ABC is it for me. -

Love ABC Cooling & Heating Service.
They have been taking care of my mothers house for years. On a fixed income she can not afford extravagant extra services, but believes in maintaining her system.
Bruce does an excellent thorough job, doesn't try and "up sell" and makes sure that potential problems are addressed before they become a costly repair. -

Their pricing strategy is unfortunate, so I will not use the firm in the future.
On a call where they discovered our heater's ignitor was out, the company would not provide their service on a parts and labor basis - or disclose parts prices. This is the owner's choice. So for a service call to get a heater element replaced (basically plugging in a new ignitor), we were quoted $330. The technician could not say what the part price is. What troubled me was searching the price for the ignitor shows this to be a $20 part. The consequence of the visit is I will be warmer, but also feel betrayed by the pricing strategy.
If you want to avoid the event of hyperventilation that I am enduring, you might settle on a different approach for repair of your heater. This is the first time I have experienced a repair that was not parts and labor, so I had not thought to consider this when I made this morning's call. Obviously, if the part price were not so low, I would not be bemoaning the usurious pricing that I have just endured.Comment from Andrea D. of ABC Cooling & Heating Services 11/22/2011

ABC Cooling & Heating recently replaced our heating system with new heating ducts and a new furnace. Their service and follow-up were excellent and we're extremely happy with our new system. In one month we've saved $150 in our PG&E bill, and because ABC is certified by PG&E, we received a rebate from PG&E of $3,500!!

The furnace went out on Christmas eve. We called ABC at 10am on Christmas Day: Craig was over at noon and had everything working before 1pm. He even showed us the secret extra breaker box that we had inadvertently tripped trying to put space heaters in the living room. ABC and Craig saved Christmas!

Had a living social deal to have my heater inspected and a tune up. The person answering the phone was very helpful in scheduling a time and date. On the day of the tune up I was called and notified that a technician would be by in an hour. The technician (Bruce) showed up on time and immediately went to work. When he was done, he gave me a run down of what he did and that I all I needed was a new filter. He didn't have a filter on hand, but told me exactly what I needed. He even showed me an alternate location to install a filter so I wouldn't have to crawl under the house for me to DIY. Bruce was very knowledgable and answered all my questions. He even fixed the fan function on the thermostat when I told him it wasn't working. Would use them again in the future.

We bought an old house built in 1928 that still had the original gravity furnace. Seriously?!? The old thing actually still worked, but our PGE bills in the winter months were as much as $450 a month! We got estimates from three different places, all over $20K for a new system. After the sticker shock wore off, we decided we'd wait until we won the lottery or hell froze over to get a new HVAC system.
A friend of ours is a realtor here in the area and we were describing our problem and he said you have to call ABC. I refer them to all of my clients who need to replace a system before selling a house, and they're really good and very reasonable.
Jeff came over and we told him what we wanted to accomplish. I sat down with him at the kitchen table after showing him the house and the space and describing what we wanted (knowing with confidence I was going to get another staggering figure, and already contemplating in my mind how I was going to let our realtor friend know that he was wrong...). ABC's most expensive solution to our problem was literally half of the low end of previous estimates.
I know what you're going to say... what happened? how can it be?
Jeff listened to me, and to what we were trying to accomplish and provided excellent feedback and came up with some suggestions of his own. Once we decided on a system and gave them the go ahead, the entire thing was done before we knew it... it was a major undertaking and it took a week end to end. The guys were prompt, they went way out of their way to make sure ducts and vents were located where we wanted them (adding an entire day to their time at no additional cost to me), and were about as nice a guys as you could ask to come work in your home.
The furnace went in the month of February. I'd like to share with you all my monthly savings since then by month:
March: $138.97
April: $124.18
May: $80.97
June: $237.66
My home is 2000 square feet, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and two floors (to help you gage the significance of these savings).
On top of it all, my entire house is comfortable all the time. No more electric blankets while watching TV in the family room! -

I recently purchased a check up through livingsocial. I was very impressed with Angela who first answered the phone and set up the appointment. She was very professional and friendly and made sure to repeat everything back to make sure it was ok.
They showed up within the time frame as promised. I had thought I was going to get a phone call before arrival but that didn't happen. I work from home so that wasn't an issue.
Sal, the technician, was extremely polite and professional. He checked everything out, tuned things up and explained that I was a little low on refrigerant. He did say my unit was about 30 years old and I shouldn't be too concerned about the refrigerant loss and explained where he thought the leak was coming from. He did do a touch up which cost $175. He also explained about their regular maintenance contracts which seem reasonable to me. I will consider adding that.
All in all a great experience. I would recommend them. -

We had our heater stop working about a week before Christmas. The first tech was not able to get the heater going, but said it needed a part (which was covered under our warranty). The tech was back a few days later and installed the part, but still no heat. I called ABC right away to let them know about the situation. The next day they sent Craig to take a look at the problem and he was able to get the heater going for us so that it was not cold in our house. He also diagnosed that there may be an additional problem that was still covered under our warranty, but another part was needed. Craig came back today to install the part and went above and beyond anything I expected. He did a stupendous job of thoroughly checking and fixing our furnace. ABC should be thankful to have such a caring and thoughtful employee.
Thank you, -

Writing this review based on work that was done at my mom's house. In the process of doing some remodeling she also wanted to replace what at my guess is the original furnace from when the house was built in the 50's. It was a monstrosity taking up an inordinate amount of space in the garage.
My mother had initially spoken with ABC at a home show I believe and scheduled an appointment at that time. She appreciated the fact that they arrived on time and were very personable.
The replacing of the furnace and all ductwork was done in about a day and half. And the crew was fairly friendly as well. The mere fact that it was done so fast is amazing if you could see some of the weird angles of the some of the ductwork in her garage.
My mom would highly recommend them to anyone. As would I for their speed since I was the one at the house when they were working.Listed in: The Best of the Best

I called them for a freon service to a home AC system, the technician found that the compressor wasn't starting and recommended a "hard start" kit. He fortunatly had one on his truck that would do the trick and quickly installed it by connecting two push on wire leads. Lo and behold the compressor started! When I asked him to now check the freon he found it marginal on the low side as I expected.
Here's why I won't recommend them, he tried to charge me $275.00 for the hard start kit. I'm experienced enough with electrical gear and recognized it as little more than a capacitor and solid state relay, about $10 in components if you bought it at Radio Shack. When I expressed disbelief at the price for the kit plus $59 for the service call and $50 for freon he offered to remove it and return the compressor to it's original state, I accepted.
After he left I went online and found the same "hard start kit" for $11.98 plus $7 shipping. I don't mind a little markup as payment for experience and knowledge, but $250? That qualifies as a ripoff in my book. -

Bill came over and gave me one of several estimates for the installation of a new gas furnace. After making his presentation and answering my questions, he gave me a quote for the work. Quick.
I compared it to my other estimates and decided to go with ABC. The installers came over several times, first to make the installation, then to finish the job and do a leak check. They had as many as four technicians working on my job at the same time to ensure the job was done thoroughly and timely.
Bill and Brenda at the office even helped me file the paperwork for the rebates and credits.
Overall, they did a great job. We're now experiencing cold weather and the furnace is working flawlessly. -

Since my home was built in 1994, odors from the subfloor have wafted up through the badly built custom return plenum. Finally I searched for someone that could test my vents. Only a few companies showed up. One was ABC Cooling.
They arranged to come out for free to look at it. They told me I did not need to pay for this diagnostic as they could replace and reseal the plenum. I asked for a new high efficiency furnace bid while they were there. In fact, I got 4 bids. Only one other company got back to me with a shoddily written estimate several weeks later. ABC's estimator, Bill, got back to me with a good bid and by attached PDF in email. It was very easy to work with Bill via email.
ABC sent over Stuart and Robert to install the new furnace and seal the plenum. They do clean neat work. Even improved the electrical work around the furnace. Always wore booties, put floor coverinng and vacuumed afterwards.
Everything was great, but plenum still allowed odor through.
I called back and Scott proactively suggested they get another guy out to fix it.
Sal came back and spent 3 hours but got it done. It wasn't an easy task as it was a very custom metal plenum to fit in a hard to reach area. Everybody I worked with at ABC was very skilled and customer oriented. In fact, I even got a call from the lady that schedules from her home because she couldn't reach me while she was at work. I can't recommend them enough. -

When I turned on my AC unit, it was taking way too long to cool my house. I called them to see if I need to replace my unit or repair it (my unit is 15+ yrs old). They told me they would show up between 8am-11am and would call me when the tech was on his way. The tech showed up at 8:30am - but with no phone call which was a little akward since I had just gotten out of the shower. He did a initial diagnostic and said that I did not need a new unit but that I might consider cleaning out my vents and replacing the filter.
5 Stars for honesty
-1 star for not calling as promised
-1 star for charing me after a "free consultation"
I had asked for a free consultation but they charged me $59 for the diagnostic. I paid because I was pleased that (at least I thought) they were being honest about not needing a new unit. However, when I do need a new unit I dont know if I'll necessarily go with them - had they charged me $0 for the consult as advertised - I'd probably go with them for sure.Comment from Andrea D. of ABC Cooling & Heating Services 2/10/2010

I must say I am impressed with the management and handling of a job recently done in my home on an unsatisfactory level during my annual maintenance visit.. They heard my concerns and corrected it immediately without hesitation with the utmost care and satisfaction within 24hours. Their customer service in response was fantastic with a job well done after all. I know I can count on them to keep my home warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer with the preventative maintenance program for years to come.

I chose ABC Cooling & Heating Services after receiving three estimates. They were not the most expensive nor the least, but Bill Santoni, my estimator, provided the most comprehensive and reliable information as to what would fit into the existing space of the old furnace. Bill did not oversell and was outstanding in informing me of the rebates and credits available.
The installers were polite and introduced themselves. When an addition installer came to help, the foreman made sure he introduced himself as well. Along the two day installation time, I was asked at least six times if everything was fine and to my expectations. Unbelievable! They were neat and thorough. When some unexpected problems with the existing ductwork were discovered, they professionally replaced what was necessary without any underlying fanfare.
I also had an Air conditioner installed. With the rebate and energy tax credit available, I went with the top of the line unit and have not regretted it ever since, especially when we had a heat spell one week after installation. Our system is dual zoned and after a month we discovered a glitch in how the original ductwork was laid, so a couple of the ducts were in conflict to the assigned zone. ABC returned and took care of the problem professionally, again without any complaints AND without charge.
I've dealt with many contractors and many companies in the trade and ABC Cooling & Heating by far was the most impressive and I could not happier. Customer satisfaction is their number one priority. Now, the winter season is upon us and the dual zone furnace system is distributing heat in rooms that use to be extremely cold. -

I recently replaced an old gravity furnace in my 1928 home. I was very impressed with a great guy named Jeff at ABC. I was referred by a friend. Heating in old houses is a challenge (actually everything in an old house is a challenge), but he recommended and installed "zoning" so basically I can choose to heat only parts of the house at a time. We went with three zones, one for our bedrooms, one for the main living area and one for a downstairs family room area.
My heating bills have dropped DRASTICALLY and the house heats up quickly and maintains the temperature well. The best part was that he gave me several different levels of price and efficiency and spent a lot of time with me. I think he lives in Berkeley or Oakland also, so he was close to me. -

After the first cold snap of this season, I turned on my furnace - which had worked well all last year. And got nothing but cold air. Calling my regular furnace repair company (Lavine's), on a Friday afternoon, I was becoming frustrated when Monday afternoon rolled around and still no one had called me back. Calling again, I connected with a dispatcher who told me they were booked up and couldn't get to me for ten days. Ten more days in a 52 degree house..?! I couldn't do that.
So when I was referred to ABC by a friend in the trades, I was relieved when Brenda told me even though their schedule was full for the next few days, they would work me in. In fact, a technician, Bruce, came by later that same day between jobs.
He was friendly and professional and fixed the problem (a disconnected HSI and a partially blocked air intake pipe) in under an hour . He took the time to show me what the problems had been and how he'd solved them (nice when a company takes the time to educate the consumer) and the whole thing cost only $95.
What impressed me the most about ABC is their willingness to put themselves out to accommodate a customer and their clearly knowledgeable and experienced tech who thoroughly and patiently answered questions from a customer. Thanks ABC - you've got a customer for life! -

I couldn't be happier with how quickly I was scheduled in, the service, and how these guys handled this call. It was a win-win situation, all around. My heater is working, we have a funny and great story to pass on, and most of all that squirrel is still alive and foraging in my backyard somewhere.
Special thank you to Sal and Scott, bless you guys!!!!

Back in the beginning of January and after having 3 other companies check out our furnace and one saying we had a crack in it and needed to replace it, we called ABC after having PG&E check out the crack diagnosis(which was false).
ABC was the only company to correctly diagnose what was wrong with our furnace. We had a short in the control panel and once that was replaced, it was good as new. The service here was professional and friendly, from the first phone call made to the follow up after the replacement of the control panel.
Fast forward a few weeks. I will skip the long story, but I called ABC on behalf of some close family friends who were going through a health crisis. This family had been without a working furnace for 2+ years and needed to have one in hopes of the family member coming home from the hospital. Brenda the office manager (or something like that) answered the phone and scheduled for a sales person to come out to diagnose the furnace. The furnace definitely needed replacing and arrangements were made to have a new one installed. Sadly, the family member who was in the hospital passed away and I had to call ABC to reschedule the install (this was a Sunday and the install was scheduled for Monday). Brenda (who was on her day off) called me back right away with such understanding and we left the install date open. I called back a couple of days later to schedule the furnace install, and they sent someone out the very next day.
According to the house owner, the crew did a great job-working hard and doing things to help get the house warm again in times of great sadness. I cannot express enough my gratitude that I found this company. -

These guys Rock!
ABC Heating installed a new furnace in my home in November 2009. This past week, we smelled some odors that seemed to be coming from the heater vents that smelled like burning rubber and skunk like smells.
I called them first thing in the morning and they were able to send someone out the same morning. The Tech checked the furnace top to bottom and couldn't find anything. When he smelled the odor, he figured it had to be skunk. He went outside and found one of the small vent screens had been pried open. He surmised that a skunk or family of skunks was using the area under the house to nest. I made sure there were no skunks under the house then closed up the broken vent.
They went above and beyond in the customer service area. They did not charge for this visit. I would highly recommend ABC Heating and Cooling to anyone and everyone. -

I just had a new furnace installed by ABC Cooling & Heating. I got quotes from 5 different companies, 3 quoted on a Carrier system and 2 on a Trane system. ABC was not the lowest quote, but their resentative was the most knowledgeable and presented his company's business the best. When the workman came they were friendly, knew their business, worked non-stop until the job was done. They cleaned up, asked if I had any questions about how to operate the new furnace. I can not say how impressed I was with the company's total workmanship from start to finish. I would recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a new furnace.

After reading my first review on Yelp, after my furnace installation, the manager responded immediately. Paperwork appeared. Jeff, the sales person, graciously helped me fill it out, and I submitted by certified mail. Two weeks ago I received my PG&E rebate, and today I received notice that my Cash for Appliances rebate for $300 was approved, and I will receive it in 4 weeks. ABC deserves 4.5 stars, because of the paperwork delay. Installation, however, went extremely smooth. The furnace works great.

ABC should stand for Absolutely Best Customer Service.
My A/C unit (the part that lives outside) was not working. I called ABC Cooling and they sent a technician out that day who arrived during the time window I was told. He checked out the unit and explained what tests he was doing. The unit was found to have a bad compressor, which was not a surprise to me.
The technician called the office to see if there was an available person to evaluate what we needed and make recommendations. An estimator came out that afternoon and we determined what would be the best replacement unit. He gave me an estimate.
Then, later that day, I found that an old breaker was causing another problem with a smaller unit (used for the upstairs). I could not get it to stay on. So, I called the estimator named Jeff and he called his supervisor who came to our house at 7:30pm and make the breaker work....but noted that it needed replacement. He sent a technician (same guy, Craig) out to replace the breaker the next day. Note: no service charge.
Wednesday the air conditioner was installed by Craig(and another guy helped with the heavy lifting). He got it all the way to done and working perfectly in about 7 hours. People who have done any work on their home can appreciate "all the way to done".
And it cost EXACTLY what they said it would.
I will recommend this company to everyone. The people cared for their customers and for the company that employs them. They were polite, respectful of my home, honest and hard working.
And our home is COOOOOL once again.Listed in: My Neighborhood, Home repair

Friendly, prompt service, but a little bummed that they charged an additional $36 on top of the $59 diagnostic fee for a piece of tape and to clean off the heating duct. Although I'm happy it wasn't a "big" problem, I feel a bit taken advantage of for something as simple as tape.

I purchased a roof heating/cooling unit last august (2009) from their Fresno location and everything is working fine and I've been happy with the service. They provided one year of free maintenance service and I did sign up for their paid maintenance service, because of their attention to detail. The only item which I need to mention is that I did not qualify for the federal tax credit, because the unit they sold me is a 14/12 instead of the 15/13. At the time of purchase the salesman did state that this unit will be qualified for the tax credit. Overall it's a minor point and I should have consulted with my accountant prior to purchase. I still believe that this is a good company and I will continue to call them if I need any servicing.
