Only place I know in Sacramento that's as good and cheap as San Francisco Chinatown.
You can load up a big Pink box of buns for cheap.
No more $2 buns from Ranch99 or those other places that individually wrap each item and charge you double for it.
Only bad is, they close sometimes at 4pm and 5pm. Too late for me to go after working in downtown even though it's on my way home. -

Need to kiss up to coworkers that pick on you for getting promoted so quickly? ABC bakery egg custard tarts.
They should just rename this place egg custard bakery, everyone is obsessed with their egg custard tarts. It's my great grandpa's favorite so I find myself here every once in a while, though you should call ahead because they sell out before like noon sometimes. The pastry is flaky and the custard is light and generous, both very delicious. Service is so-so but they've been trying lately, probably due to yelp expanding their client demographic to people that expect good service as well. I like their tarts but I prefer cookie like pastry instead of the flakiness but everyone and their moms love this place so I always get it here to share.
Kinda pricey at 95 cents per tart but it's good so what ever. They have other stuff but I've never tried and I don't eat meat so can't try the curry buns no matter how great my love for curry is.
Definitely try, especially if you've never had egg custard tarts or had them at some crappy buffet or dim sum! -

Best place to get your charsiewbao and un tat outside of SF and Oakland. I tried the charsiewbao from a SF bakery that claimed the best in town. And you know what...the fillings were white and pasty. Unless I'm wrong, that's not natural. I will venture to guess that bao has been sitting there for awhile and thus all natural color faded.
The un tat (or custard) from ABC is so good. The crust is buttery and flaky, as it should be! The only place better is in SF, called Golden Gate Bakery. -

I have probably been going to ABC bakery for at least 15 years and finally thought about writing a review. Although there was a owner change, I still believe this place is one of the best chinese bakeries in Sacramento. I also truly believe that they have one of the egg tart (dan tat) I've ever had, comparing to dan tat in my homeland Hong Kong.
Egg Tart (Dan Tat)- 5 stars
Nice golden brown, flaky crust that is nicely flavored with a golden yellow egg custard that is perfectly sweetened. When you take the first bite, you'll think you're in Hong Kong. Pair this with a nice cup of milk tea and it'll take you to mid-afternoon tea time.
BBQ pork bao (Char siu bao)- 5 stars
Nice chewy texture, with a golden brown top. Filling is perfectly balanced with meat and small pieces of fat (yes fat! it makes everything taste good).
Pineapple Bread- 4 stars
This sweet loaf of bread is awesome. It is balanced with coconut and custard flavors that goes well with any drink. Toast it lightly and it'll taste fresh out of the oven, nice and crispy.
Pineapple Bao (Bou lou bao)- 4 stars
Nice golden crust atop this wonderfully sweetened bao. I love the crumbly crust and the custard inside is perfect.
This place has always been a neighborhood favorite. I even knew the first owners and they were extremely kind people. The new owners haven't done anything different and it seems they have continued the legacy of Sacramento's ABC Bakery.
Enjoy! -

Driving through the neighborhood and having some extra time, I decided I would try this place out because of the rave reviews. ABC was kind of difficult to find because it's actually on the side of Bel-Air. It is very small inside, and they had a limited amount of variety when I arrived (mid-day).
I really wanted to try some cupcakes but they were out. I opted for the almond bar, taro cookie, egg yolk cookie, and egg tart. The server was friendly and fast but not efficient. Her attention was elsewhere thus the rush and forgetting my egg yolk cookie *sad face*. The egg tart was very good, the best I've had so far. The crust was flaky and buttery and the egg just melted in my mouth. The almond bar was okay; I was expecting it to be chewy but it was a little too flaky for my taste. The taro cookie was yummmmmy and filled with a generous amount of taro inside.
I will come back to try the hot dog buns and pork buns AND the egg yolk cookie they forgot to give me.... well, I guess that definitely gives me a reason to go back! -

This place is awesome! It does not look like much from the outside and the selection is limited (especially when you compare with some SoCal bakeries) but the quality is top notch! I've been there twice at different times of the day and have gotten HOT and fresh buns both times... so yummy!
I highly recommend the pineapple bun ($0.95) and BBQ Pork bun ($1.00). The egg tarts are also delicious.
It's kinda hard to find. Located in the Bel Air shopping center behind the Roundtable Pizza. There is plenty of parking.
They will accept credit cards for purchases over $15 (Visa/MC). -

How many baos to get?
1-2-3!
Seriously. Get three pork baos. One for you, one for a friend, and one more for yourself to eat later. MMmm. Also, who tried singing that? Hahaha. -

If you've been to Hong Kong or like real Chinese food, you must seek this little shop out. It's in a random location behind the Raley's on Florin and South Land Park Drive. I used to live in Hong Kong and I feel that this shop is a notch above the average Chinese bakery. Large chunks of pork fill the BBQ pork bun; same with the chicken buns. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the beef ones yet, but I believe I would not be disappointed. Many traditional (non-sweet) Chinese cookies, pastries, and breads are available, including pineapple buns.
The egg tart: one of the best I've had anywhere. You can tell a good egg tart by the crust. Many are chalky and a waste of calories, but the crust here is flaky and wonderful, the filling warm and custardy as it should be.
They were out of the curry filled baos the Saturday morning that I went. You can order ahead to be assured of getting the bao you are seeking, and many customers in line had done just that. This is a true gem - find it! -

I was on a hunt to look for fruit basket cakes all around this pocket area. Although there were none here, I'm glad I stumbled upon this bakery. They have a selection baked goods: pork buns, egg tarts, cupcakes, cookies, rolls and bread!
I tried the cupcakes and egg tarts. They were both de...light....ful !
The egg tarts were my absolute favorite item here. They were sweet, warm and flakey! These tarts do come close to my spot, Golden gate bakery in san Francisco. I'll be back to pick up egg tarts, pork buns and try their other baked goods. -

Best pork bao in town. I could end my review there and have said all I need to say.
Then the guy in the back asks, "Why are they the best?" And I simply answer, "Because ABC Bakery understands that the pork bao is all about the pork. The bao itself is just the delivery system for the pork."
And this pork is good. Tender and sweet and just the right amount to match the lightness of the dough. Just enough sauce to keep the meat moist. Made fresh and kept warm.
ABC Bakery is on the backside of the Bel Air shopping center on Florin Road just off Hwy 5. It is small storefront with what appears to be a large kitchen in the back as they turn out several types of baos, egg custard tarts, and roll cakes among many possible options.
Just make sure you get a bao. Or two. -

I love the curry chicken bun!! This is the reason I decide to visit this bakery in the first place.
I first try their buns at work when one of my coworkers bought some and brought it to work and I just feel in love with the curry chicken bun. So I decide to yelp this bakery and decide to give it a little visit.
First, this bakery was a little hard to find with it's location because it was hidden on the side of Bel Air. However, when you find it you will notice it's a little simple bakery. There's plenty of parking, so no need to worry about find a spot.
Both times I visit this bakery, I went around 9am-10am in the morning, which is pretty early. However, the bakery opens at 7am. I was hoping there was still sum buns left because from previous reviews I read, they run out quick.
When I first walked in, I can smell the freshly bake buns in the oven which reminded me of bakeries in Hong Kong which was already a plus in my book!! The place is really small and it has its normal display of buns and bake goods. However, I went there for one reason and one reason only and it's to get my hands on the curry chicken buns!!!
I've tried couple of their buns and bake goods from the two times I visit.
LOVE and would totally RECOMMEND:
-Curry chicken buns--if you love curry I would recommend this bun because it's really good. The curry is not overwhelming and it's really good. It's hard to imagine curry in a bun, but don't let that stop you. This is my FAVE!!!
-Egg tart--I finally found a place with good egg tart. Not many places in Sacramento makes good egg tarts that is comparable to the ones I had in Hong Kong, but this is by far the closest. The crust is not as thick and hard as other places I've tried in Sacramento. The egg tart here is really good. The crust is flaky and not as thick with lots of filling and not as sweet. Also, the size of the tart is pretty big, so you will get your moneys worth.
Okay to tried:
-Hot dog buns---I love how they made it. The design of the bun is different from all the rest of the other hot dog buns you get from other bakeries, which was what attracted me to getting it in the first place. I'm not a big fan of hot dog buns in general, but i just loved how they made it so I order two. It was pretty good, but nothing really special to me. It's a different taste since they baked it with some onions on top and hot dogs in each corner.
-Pineapple bun--I decided to give it a try because I love pineapple buns in general and you can't really go wrong with it. The buns here was alright, I had better. The ones here has filling inside the buns, which I do not like at all. I prefer mine with no fillings.
I do advise to come early in the morning because they do run out of buns really quick. I never went in the afternoon or mid afternoon, but I went around 10 am in the morning and they already ran out certain stuff already.
The lady in the front is really nice and helpful, but her English is not as good but you can get by. I don't really remember all the prices of each buns but both times I visit I usually get a dozen of mix buns and usually I pay about $11-$12 bucks, so it's okay. I'm not going to complain because I really like their curry chicken and egg tart. I would be going back for another visit soon just to get those. -

ABC Bakery's egg custard tart is excellent. You don't have to fly to Hong Kong to get a great "don tot." I'm not one to rave about a hot dog, but try their hot dog bun, too.

This bakery was just as good as everyone has said it is. I walked in to the shop, immediately noticed I was the only white girl in there, and smiled: it *has* to be good if that's the case. I ordered a dozen of the bbq pork buns, grabbed a bag of the unfilled pineapples, and one egg custard tart.
The egg custard was super eggy, sweet, and flaky. Little more crust on the bottom would have been nice, but the crust was absolutely FLAWLESS otherwise. Flaky, buttery, but still melt-in-your-mouth smooth. I was in heaven.
The pineapple rolls are sweet, pretty tasty. I don't get "pineapple" flavor from them, but that's probably because they don't have pineapple in the middle. Either way, the top is glazed with a certain sweetness that I can only imagine can come from baking these rolls with pineapple juice.
And finally, oh lord...the bbq pork bao. Oh, heaven, I have seen you, and it is this bao. I ate two and was absolutely stuffed. The filling was cooked perfectly, only the tiniest bits of fat -which, by the way, tasted AMAZING and melted in my mouth and holysweetjesusitwasgood- and damn.
I cannot wait to come back and try the curry beef pockets. That's my next conquest, I think.
BTW, Box of 12 bao for 9.50? AMAZING. I love you, ABC Bakery. You were absolutely work the 35 minute drive. lots and lots and lots of love for you! -

My mom always brings me baked goods from ABC bakery. It's not too far from home, it's very fairly priced (I got 12 items for just about $10), and everything is fresh.
Like most Chinese bakeries, they have a variety of baos and pastries. Their char-siu bao are decent and the pineapple bao are pretty good too. They run about $0.80 each and make a great snack. They probably have about 10 different baos on their menu.
They serve egg custard tarts (about $0.90 each) and they are pretty good as well. It's hard to even compare them to the deliciousness of Golden Gate Bakery's egg tarts (SF), but when I'm in Sacramento, it'll do. Last time I went, there were only three left but they said that a fresh batch would be out in 10 minutes. They also sell sponge cake, cake rolls with whipped cream filling, moon cakes and pastries like apple turnovers.
They'll often have savory items like fried pork dumplings, also. These are $0.65 each, I believe. They're kind of greasy, but pretty flavorful.
The shop itself is quite small. They have 2 tables, but when I went last, one table was being occupied with the girl working there (she had newspapers all over the table). My family usually orders our items and we take them home, but it would be nice to have the option of enjoying the baked goods there. The environment is very casual- it's nothing fancy, but it tastes good.
Notes:
-Located in a strip mall- plenty of parking.
-If you're only picking up a few items, bring cash. I think they have a minimum to use your card. -

My mom has been taking me to this Chinese bakery since I was in preschool...Their BBQ pork buns bring me back to the best moments of my childhood every time I bite into one! Admittedly, their egg tarts haven't been the same ever since they changed ownership a few years back...I suppose "grandma" and "grandpa" (as I used to call them) must have retired by now seeing as it's been 20 years since I was in preschool. But the apple turnovers and hot dog buns are a close second favorite, just as good as I remember them! I love coming to ABC bakery.

Every Saturday morning, I get together with several cyclists for a training ride along the Garden Highway. My favorite pre-ride breakfast consists of 2-3 BBQ pork baos and a strong cup of coffee. Seems that combination gives me enough energy to last the entire ride. On most occasions, I go to ABC Bakery because it's convenient and the food is good. The closure of J&J Bakery limited my options.
For a post-ride snack, I like their custard cups, melon cookies, sweet rice cakes, and sesame puffs. Yeah, probably not the most nourishing food, but they do taste good and I can always rationalize away my action because I'm going to burn those calories off.
I gave them 4 stars because while food is tasty, customer service is inconsistent. For a long time, they allowed me to bring my bike inside, so it would not get stolen. Then, all of a sudden, they said I couldn't because it might break the glass case window. And so now I have to leave it leaning against the outside window. -

ABC Bakery is one of those hole in the wall places. It looks very old and run-down on the outside and is on the corner of a small shopping area. You won't notice it until you actually drive through that small area.
Giving it 4 stars because it could be a bit nicer or cleaner. They had minimal selection probably because we came in at an hour that all their goodies were all gone. There were swiss rolls for $5, cookies, custard pastries, and asian cupcakes.
I came in with a co-worker and bought the 1.00 pork bow and boy, they were yummy!! They're served hot and FLUFFY for just a 1.00! Once you bite into its fluffiness, you taste the sweet and meaty bbq pork. They def. put a bunch in there. None of that 2-3 dry pieces of bbq pork. NOT HERE. It was really tasty and since it was a 1.00 and that flavorful, I'd drive to get more. It tasted just like pork buns from home (Bay Area)Listed in: Culture Invasion

Great buns, but the egg tarts need work (the crust is off). My favorite is probably the hot dog bun, which neatly and easily sections off into four pieces (all for yourself, of course).
Definitely a hole-in-the-wall kind of establishment in a weird location. Still, it's one of the better bun bakeries in Sac. -

A great bakery to satisfy your cravings for "cha siu bao" pork buns. They offer other great bakery items which will fill your appetite. The owners are very friendly and nice. Stop by and try them out. Located in the Bel Air shopping center on Florin Rd. and South Land Park Drive in south Sacramento.

5 stars for the baked char siu bao (BBQ pork bun) alone!!! Was originally going to bring them to my boyfriend in the Bay Area but that's gonna be many hours and as soon as I smelled them in my car, I knew it wouldn't last, so I brought them to my coworkers instead. Inhaled immediately. Soft on the inside, great char siu, and the bun is perfectly baked with that honey coat lightly brushed on.
Also got dan ta (egg tarts), which are absolutely delicious. The crust is golden and perfectly flaky, but holds the custard together very well, which is impressive because they put a LOT of custard in - it's a little deeper than most other egg tarts I've had. The custard filling is very good - not overwhelming, not too sweet, just perfectly flavored. It's almost like a Portuguese egg tart in terms of the flaky crust, but the custard filling is not bruleed.
I wouldn't be surprised if this place has the best egg tarts and pork buns in Sacramento, but I can't tell you since I haven't tried any others. =( However, being from the Bay Area, this little bakery does stack up to some of the best there! Fast service and super cheap - I got 3 pork buns and 3 egg tarts for around $5.50!
Was a little hard for me to find at first, tucked in the back of the Bel Air plaza. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to come here once on my last day in Sacramento, it's a little out of the way for me but totally worth it! -

I've had a change of heart. I've fallen in love with their BBQ pork buns and hot dog buns!! I read my previous review and HAD to update to give ABC the justice they deserve!!
Their hot dog buns are BETTER than 85c..I can't stress how much I enjoy the way the sweet bread complements the salty hot dog. The perfect amount of mayo is not overpowering and adds some moisture to the bun, I LOVE IT! Their BBQ pork buns are BEST IN TOWN. Although, I am a bit disappointed the past few times I've been here, the top didn't have a sweet glaze covering. Still the best BBQ pork buns I've ever had, go get yourself some and I bet you'll agree..it'll live up to its hype. That's a promise.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

ABC Bakery is a tiny little bakery located on the far end of a strip mall. If you don't know where it is, it can be difficult to find, but it is definitely well worth the trip.
I've been going to this place since I was kid. When you walk into the bakery, your surrounded by warmth and the sweet smell of breads cooking in the oven. As Courtney C. had said, it has recently been taken over by new owners and the price has increased by about $.05-$.10 a bao, but the new recipes are awesome!!!!
There is more BBQ pork inside their Cha Siu Baos and their Curry Beef Baos have carmelized onions added to the mixture. On top of that, they've added a few items to the menu. The Hot Dog Bao (I know it sounds weird) isn't really a bao, but more like four large pieces of hot dog wrapped in bao dough then stuck together to make it look like a four leaf clover. It's sprinkled with green onions then baked and it is DELICIOUS!!! In addition, they also make loaves of bread that you can purchase such as Red Bean, Coconut, and Raisin. Everything is so awesome, you really have to try it all.
My recommendations: get one of each bao, especially the Cha Siu, Curry Beef, and Hot Dog. You're taste buds will thank you. -

I love the BBQ pork buns!!!
They are open everyday, but I usually come during the weekend in the morning. I want to make a point that you should come early to get the buns hot & fresh. Also I usually order the footballs, they are awesome, they usually run out if you come early enough.
All their pastries are delicious and price very well... best in town, hands down.Listed in: Chinese Food

I'm pretty picky about my desserts. I usually crave for french pastries, but when I feel like some Asian desserts, I come here. No where else compares... Not even dimsum places and I rarely go eat dimsum. I guess I'm not your typical Asian gal. Anyways, this place has the best egg tarts ever! Their other items are good as well, but I always come for their giant/overfilled egg tarts. Super delicious!!! =)

Curry bau and the char shu baos are very good, at least the baked ones. Trying to copy the ones in SF... they don't entirely succeed, but they are still pretty tasty and they're dirt cheap.
The pineapple buns are good, too. Very unassuming little place on the side of the shopping center, we're usually in and out in under 5 minutes with a dozen baos of various kinds. Mmmm.
Was tempted to try the dan tats (egg tarts) this past time, but we forgot to order it -

I've been eating ABC's BBQ pork buns (cha siu bao) for as long as I can remember. A few years ago, new ownership took over and the prices went up (okay...they still only cost ~90 cents) but the size of the buns decreased. Yet, I wasn't I disgruntled...at all. Why, you may ask? The buns' meat-to-bread ratio drastically increased and now, the buns taste even better! In addition to the BBQ pork variety, ABC also stocks other types of buns including curry beef, curry chicken, chicken, beef and pineapple. Another nice aspect about the bakery is that they're constantly producing fresh buns throughout the day...just peek into the backroom and you can see the workers diligently making them. (When I was more obsessive about the freshness, I used to call in and ask when the next batch would be ready!)
The buns are perfect for a quick, easy and not to mention, cheap meal! -

This place is not bad. The BBQ pork buns were fresh and meaty, not all dough-ey like some places, and it was sorta crunchy. I also got the egg tarts and they were good, but they look pale haha. Maybe I'm just used to the ones in San Jose and San Francisco, but they didn't have much variety to me here. Also was pricier than normal. So far, better than anything else I can get in Sacramento though!

I am a huge lover of barbecued pork baos. I think I could live on them. Every time I see them for sale I have to have one. So, of course, after having read several great reviews about ABC Bakery, I had to go there and try their Baos.
I bought a pineapple bao, a curried beef bao, and a barbecued pork bao. They were all thoroughly delicious. Surprisingly, my favorite was the curried beef bao. The barbecued pork bao contained some chunks of fat and gristle (-1 star) but was still delicious.
Yes, I will be back, mainly for the curried beef baos.Listed in: Sweet times in Sac

I finally found time to come out here. This bakery is difficult to find, frustrating because some people in Sacramento can't drive but it is definitely worth the trip!! I've grew up in SF, eating these baos for breakfast weekday sometimes and weekends. The prices are a tad bit more expensive than I expected. Today I only gotten a few baos and some egg tarts. Been craving the egg tarts for the longest. The egg tarts are DELICIOUS. One of the best I've had in a while. My boyfriend got the cha siu bao (baked BBQ pork), it's his fav, and he loved it. The filling is delicious!!!! I didn't care for the dough/bread part too much but mmm was the filling good. I'm definitely coming back here!

MMMMMMM. Best pork Bao I've had in Sac-town! It's hard to find but worth the effort! Also, the ginormous almond cookies are outstanding. Very inexpensive. The bao won't make it out of the car - buy extras to eat on the way home! TAS-TEEEE!

Bring cash and a healthy appetite. These must be the best baos in the greenhaven-pocket area. The pineapple, curry chicken, and bbq pork baos are fantastic and really cheap. You can have a filling and tasty breakfast for under $3. This place has been here longer than I can remember and it is always busy and has always been affordable.
One caution: the bbq pork does contain some fat....however, that is where you get the flavor. This fat is okay to eat and will really enhance the taste of the bao. If you don't like it you can throw the fat away, but I guarantee it tastes good. This is coming from someone who cuts all the fat off of his steak.
If you have trouble finding it, just go to the bel air on Florin and South Land Park. In between the bel air and the Kragen Auto Parts, there is a road that will lead you down to this place. It's a hidden treasure of delicious baos! -

Testimonial to the greatness of ABC Bakery:
My Dad is a grumpy Chinese man who lives in the Bay Area. I went to visit him for Father's Day and his only request was for me to stop by ABC and pick him up a dozen pork bao. I asked, "Don't you have a close Chinese bakery? After 2 hours on the road, the bao are gonna be cold and my car is going to smell like food."
