mmm...Hong Kong style cafe food is good anywhere.

Great portions, okay prices, mediocre service.

We ordered 8 dishes for 4 people ( yeah, i know, a bit of overkill, but so good!) and ended up with ~$50 check.  I'm from the San Gabriel Valley, an area populated with asian immigrants and hong kong styled cafes.  Although this restaurant doesn't quite compare, it wasn't terrible either.
The restaurant was large and loud, as most asian places are..

The quality of food was great.
    I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't like... The first time I went I got an ommelette which wasn't good. The side of fries was unexpected and they weren't any good either. Service was HORRIBLE! The guy rarely ever came by and I was waiting forever to get the check so I could leave.

Second time I went was worse - My friend and I were sat down at a table upon arriving. We then sat around for no joke like 20 minutes or more waiting for our order to be taken. Then we learned they had NO DESSERTS! "Only summa" he said. Wow... Then why do you call it a bakery cafe???

We left. I gave it a second chance, and won't be coming back. 1 star just because I like that there open late... But so is Dessert Republic which is right next to the movie theater parking garage! Much better food, and SERVICE there.

Maybe if I were Asian they would have attended to me better at ABC...

Don't let the name fool you. This is not a bakery and they do not sell cakes here. I found out the hard way by actually going there.

MODED! Don't ask me why their names says Bakery and they aren't one.

2 stars for a misleading name.

This is where I go for some cheap food! I've only tried a couple of dishes there and they were good. I appreciate their service and the fact that they don't rush you through your meal. Again, super cheap and they are open till late!

I ordered a BBQ duck and pork rice plate. They gave me a really dried duck neck and a really dried and tough BBQ pork. The only palatable item is the lettuce on that plate. This place's quality has declined steadily since it open two years back. The waiters are also not really attentive now. I waited at least 20 minutes to get my check paid. There are just fewer and fewer reasons to go there now.

Cantonese-chinese food, my guilty pleasure. I've been to the ones in the city as a wee kid, but never tried this location. They accept CCs so that's a huge plus.

Few hours later after our Ajisen disappointment dinner, we decided to come here for a late 2nd dinner, yeah we're fatties.

Between the 4 of us we shared:
Salted Pepper Chicken Wings (really good)
Salted Fish & Diced Chicken Fried Rice (average, needs to be saltier ha)
Mixed Steak with baked rice (weird but ok, half cheesy creamy seafood over rice, half tomato based pork chop)

Overall, we left stuffed and only paid half the price of Ajisen earlier. Prob will come here again to satisfy our late night munchies.

    3.5 stars.

    Yuck!

I came here with my boyfriend after having Tpumps at around 10pm on a Friday night. We weren't that hungry so we ended up ordering a plate of chow mein to share. It took about 10 minutes before we received our order. The chow mein? Disgusting. Worst chow mein I've ever had.. bland, the noodles were suuuper crispy, and it was too oily! The service sucked, too. All they did was serve us tea and brought our plate out. I won't be back!

The food here isn't excellent, but it's my go to place after the gym at night or late night munchies. They open until 3AM and is one of the few places where you can get a bit of late night snacking and delicious Asian drinks.

However, I would not recommend going to this place if you are looking for good Asian cuisine. There are much better places around the peninsula and Bay Area for that.

    My recommendations:
-The fries have been quite delicious every time
-Sandwiches are simple and relatively healthy - my favorite is the club sandwich.
-The milk teas and Asian drinks are quick treats

Oh, the portions are quite big for the price as well! Added plus for a casual outing.

Bottom Line: This is a good choice if you crave a quick fix late into the night and would enjoy a large array of Western-Asian fusion snacks.

Been craving salted fish & chicken fried rice for over a week now.  The only place in San Mateo that served the dish as far as I can tell is ABC.

    Food:
salted fish & chicken fried rice - I actually put in an order for to go because once I opened the menu there were too many things I wanted to try.  The dish itself was aight, could have been saltier, but decent for the price.

Beef noodle soup - the noodles they used I'm just not a fan of.  I'm more used to the Taiwanese style beef noodle where it's spicy and the noodles are fatter.

Combo seafood noodle soup - my friend ordered this; again the noodles not the greatest.  I would stay away from the noodle soups overall.

Salt and pepper fried chicken - Wow. Loved it.  Definitely ordering it again next time.  I'm actually starting to crave for it as I type out this review.

pork liver and kidney appetizer dish - they were out of the liver but the kidney was awesome.  I miss having the liver though...

    Service:
You had to get the attention of the wait staff every time you wanted something.
    1. Ready to order
    2. Where's the appetizer dish? Especially since my noodle soup is already out?
    3. Ready for the check

I would recommend coming for the food.  Just stay away from the noodle soup and keep in mind you can't sit around waiting for them to come to you. You have to be the one to get their attention.

I will continually update as I try more dishes

I really like coming to ABC, iono if it's because it's cheap and convenient (don't have to drive to sf) but I understand other people's frustrations with this place.

During lunchtime it gets pretty busy and takes foreverrrr to find a seat. Service is mediocre, cause you can end up waiting a while for anyone to give you any attention. Unless you're good at being Chinese and hunt waiters down, you're not gonna get attention, especially not a "how's your food tasting?".

The food here does not taste as good as the ABC in SF (Noriega) did before, but I think they standardized all their foods lately.

Also, they do not bake their own buns. They have them sent from SF so they're not as fresh and delicoius (even when you come in the morning).

I like to get their beef tendon rice noodle soup. They give you lots of beef tendon and lots of rice noodles. Yumyumyum. They have other good stuff here, but I gotta say it's hit or miss. Sometimes their food is made really well, sometimes you're like wth?

Their drinks are pricey for the amount you get (again, compared to ABC SF before they standardized their food) so I'd just walk to Tpumps after and get a drink hehehe.

This is a Cantonese style cafe.  The food is good and the prices are very reasonable.  I ordered their roast duck soup.  It was awesome and it only cost $5.75.  They were generous with the serving of duck.
I'm giving this place three stars because their service isn't the best.  We waiting a while to order.  My husband want chicken wings as an appetizer, however, the wings came out after our meal arrived.  Side note: wings were excellent.  Then once we were done eating we needed to wait again to pay the bill.

    Positive:
    Great food
    Clean Resturant

    Negative:
    Poor Service

"WTF? YOU'RE GIVING ABC 4 STARS?!?!?"

YES! And no, I ain't smoking anything either just hear me out.

Compared to the other two ABC locations in San Francisco, it is like night and day. I've been to The Sunset and Chinatown location several times and if you enjoy sh*tty service and the chances of catching a food-borne illness from the atrociously disgusting conditions then honey, knock yourself out.

YES, this San Mateo location is getting 4 STARS from me baby! It's the most modern, cleanest and largest of all three locations. The food comes out lightning fast. The employees are super friendly and actually have a smile on their face unlike the ones at The Sunset and Chinatown location who seems like they have a permanent stick up their a$$. I may not look like it but I do understand Canto so stop talking smack as if I don't understand. Ok, I digress.

ABC is an HK Café which serves a plethora of American, Chinese and HK Style (British inspired) food items. You will find anything from Wonton Noodle Soup, Roast Duck Lo Mien, Jook, Curry Beef, Hainan Chicken to a BLT Sandwich, Macaroni Soup and Baked Rice/Noodle Dishes. They also have a good variety of drinks, slushies, and dessert-type drinks. Portions are huge and nothing is over $8.95.

My all-time FAVORITE go-to HK dish is the Baked Pork Chop Rice ($7.95)
    http://www.yelp.com/bi...
They make the best Baked Pork Chop Rice at this ABC location.

The fried rice is perfectly al-dente with soft fluffy egg pieces. The pork chop duo is slightly thick with a rim of fat around the edges which gives the pork more flavor and tenderness. The tomato sauce is savory, tangy and ultra-creamy; like a thick creamy tomato soup. A sprinkle of cheese that's melted underneath the sauce adds an additional layer of richness. SOOOOO GOOOD!

Straight FOB food for the ABC's soul! LOVE IT.

    OTHER NOTE(S):
*The only location that accepts CC's
*Stick with the Baked Rice/Noodle items

Had the same as usual. Baked pork chop rice with spicy chicken wings.

It seems like the baked pork chop always is ready to come out and the chicken wings come out 2nd.  Shouldn't it be the other way around? Appetizer first than the entree?

They have some kind of special now where you can have 2 item of baked for $8.75 and add two for a cold drink.  Not bad of a deal.

What can I say, ABC is a pretty standard HK style Cafe. The food is solid, it tastes like it should taste with no big surprises. The wait staff is fast, friendly and pretty chill. The serving sizes are on the generous side but not huge. My favorites are baked pork chop over rice with a half coffee/tea drink over ice.

Check this place out if you want a nice little meal. You'll leave full and happy.

    Enjoy!

this is a great place for a quick and cheap bite... they have an extensive menu so there is something for everyone.... if you want the bows, ask the waiter/waitress... they have it wrapped in cellophane wrap toward the back of the restaurant. You just have to know to ask. The portions are ok, great for the girls unless you're a big eater. The guys might want to order two dishes.. place is somewhat clean... service is typical Chinese, but hey, we came here for the food, not the service.

Great place to get a quick bite for a minimal price, minimal service and simple decor. Basically the definition of a "cha chan teng". I love the baked pork chop over rice. Although some days I go there and can't find anything else on the menu that really appeals to me. Overall a good local restaurant.

Came here with some friends after a party and certainly the interior was very nice.  The service was also very friendly, not kicking us out when we stayed after closing.  The food was alright.  I wouldn't say it was the best but definitely not terrible.  For a place that's pretty late, I give them props for decent food.  I had the beef noodle stew  and again while it wasn't disgusting, it also wasn't very memorable.

All in all, ABC Bakery Cafe is an alright choice for late night eats but just don't expect to be blown away because you'll only leave disappointed.

The only real good thing about this place is the late hours.

Every once in a while I have an urge or HK style cafe food and come here.

The food isnt terrible but its also just forgettable. Its as if your stomach is full but you are still hungry. Nothing is exactly gross but you can tell they buy the cheapest ingredients possible.

Along with your HK style cafe food you get HK style service LOL you'll know what I mean if you've spent any amount of time in HK ;)

The congee is good but its not easy to mess that up.

Normally I'd probably give it 1 star but the Beef Tongue Chow Fun gets them one more.

The only good thing they got going is that they are open late.

The place is bigger than the typical Asian eatery and nicer decor, but the food is subpar and the service is almost non existent. Their noodle soup is filled with msg and the dish is basically 80% noodle 10% meats and garnishes and 10% soup.  It's cheap food for what you get, but the quality reflects the price.

I only go late night after hitting up some lounges in the area and saddly I'm most likely going again since nothing else is open.

I'm a huge fan of Hong Kong style cafes!  ABC delivers quick and delicious Hong Kong style comfort food that I have grown to learn and love!

The menu at ABC is quite extensive and unique.  Their menu is designed to tell a "story" so to speak, about the variety of food items they carry.  At the very end of the menu is the another story, an epilogue, of the beginnings of ABC.  Cute!

Although a bit on the salty side, I absolutely love their wonton/sui gow noodle soups!  Their wontons and sui gows are plump and filled with yummy deliciousness!  Their noodles are cooked just right, al dente with a just a bit of "bite" to it!  One word...YUM!

Their baked rice/noodle dishes are "eh", I've had better, but theirs isn't too too bad; they are relatively quick compared to their competitors!  I love how they offer the combo baked rice/noodle dishes!  Sometimes my indecisive nature inhibits me from making a quick decision and the combo baked dish solves that problem!  Win-win!  But here's a tip for ya...stay away from the seafood variety!  I'm not sure if it was an off day or what, but the last time I had the seafood baked rice, it was more sweet than savory, NOT good eats!

Their seafood based soups and other soups are delicious!  The boyfriend seems to really like their lai fun, whether it be the seafood combination or the roast duck/beef tendon combination.

I love how they offer a more family style Chinese dinner menus where you can pick and chose from a selection of over 30 items for a set price (I can't remember how much, it's been a while since I've visited during those hours).

Great food and generous portions. Regardless of what you order, you'll be sure to leave with a happy and satisfied belly!  I know mine was!

Given their name, ABC "BAKERY" and Cafe, there aren't too many baked goods/pastries???  As a matter of fact, I'm not sure they have any at all!

Very nice and modern decor.  Love the booths with high walls, it offers a bit of "privacy" in terms of eavesdropping on other's conversations, that is.  I'm not sure about the other reviews, but I find this restaurant to be one of the cleaner ones in the area.  As you're walking towards the bathroom, there is a stretch of glass window where you can see directly into the kitchen as the chefs are preparing everyone's meal.  How much more transparency do you need??

The bathrooms are the cleanest I have seen of any Chinese restaurant by far!  This is coming from someone who works for the health department!  I've seen good, I've seen bad and I've seen some really ugly.  Let's just leave it at that.

My only beef with this restaurant...they serve their hot teas in little plastic/polycarbonate cups, the same kind I used in my kindergarten class eons ago, long before the whole BPA controversy and other endocrine disrupting/cancer causing chemicals were brought to the limelight.

Haven't been to this location in a while.

    Had:
Baked seafood/ baked pork chop over rice combo
    Borsch soup

The borsch soup was too salty. It had enough tomato flavor but was just too salty. I couldn't drink it.

The baked pork chop was pretty good. Also a little salty, but tastes was good. I liked the fried rice and the tomato base.

The baked seafood was just ok. I think I had better. I'm not even sure what the sauce consists of, but I've had better at Cafe Bakery.

I really like the decor and ambiance. The place is fairly new and clean. Staff is friendly and it's pretty easy to get seats.

I'm guilty of going to ABC on Noriega after drinking..c'mon, it's right across the street from the bar!  So naturally, I went to an ABC after Medjool, right?  This one I have to say is obviously newer, cleaner, and doesn't have the same strong odor that the original has.  After looking over the menu for what seemed like an eternity, my two friends & I finally decided on what we wanted.  We called over the waiter and each said what we wanted.  S: I'll have the eggette.  Waiter: Oh sorry we don't have that.  S: Okay, let me look over the menu, you go Cat.  C: He'll (my friend walked away) have the sundae & I'll have the shrimp rice noodle roll.  Waiter: Sorry we don't have that either, fun (rice noodle roll) is only for breakfast.  C: Do you have this (pointing to something else on the little flip menu on the table)?  Waiter: Oh, don't pay attention to that, that's the summer menu (it was November)!  C: OMG, what do you have?  *looks through menu*  Do you have the combo mac soup?  Waiter: Of course we do!  My other friends decided on the HK French Toast & the salt & pepper chicken wings.

A while after the whole menu ordeal, we finally got our food and was time to dig in.  Everyone including me of course liked my combo mac soup.  Why is something so easy to make and with a whole bunch of things thrown in just taste so good?  And I don't think the booze was to blame!  The salt & pepper wings, while not the best ones I've ever had did hit the spot and was fried well.  The French Toast was a little too thick for my liking but tasty nonetheless, I loved how it was served with condense milk too.  I wouldn't say the service was bad, but, they should definitely take away their summer menu because it wasn't summer anymore & they didn't even have like anything on it!  It still gets a 4 for some yummy food & late hours.  Will go back when the HK craving hits!

What a classy HK style cafe. I love the decor here with stylish booths and tables, and the poster sized black and white photos of Hong Kong. Makes me want to go back to HK all the time.

Their HK style milk tea is one of the best that I've had here in the states. I can't say I've found another place that can even compare to this. For lunches I usually like the baked minced beef over spaghetti, or the beef stew soup noodles. The soup base in the soup noodles is really tasty. They are also very generous on the minced beef and cheese in the baked spaghetti. The dishes are around $7-8 with a decently generous portion so I can't complain. In the evenings I like ordering rice with their salted fish, eggplant and chicken clay pot dish. It's quite tasty.

There usually is quite a wait on the weekends for lunch so be prepared for a short wait. When it's crowded, I can't say the service is great, but when there's not too many people there (ie. lunches at 1 or 2) then you will get what you want when you ask.

I frequent the one in SF on Noriega, so I thought, why not come here and see if the service and everything else is.. just the same? lol. I'm not gonna compare and contrast, no worries.

It's kind of dark in the restaurant, on purpose I believe. Dim lighting but it's bright enough to see everything clearly anyway. Very HK/TW-ish. I like the look of the booths! It makes the restaurant look really modern and clean.
The menu looks huge. O_O" So many items and so many pages. I got myself a baked pork chop with rice since I haven't had anything baked in a while. The pork chop was definitely tender but it was what.. drowned in the sweet tomato sauce. Minus one star. I felt like I was eating sweetened ketchup after a while.
My table didn't get any soup to accompany our meals though. Minus one star. But they were quick with my Iced Coffee. Not so much with refills on tea.
Minus another star for the service, but it's not like we expected amazing service to begin with. It just took a while for them to get our orders and even.. get the check. o_O"

The only legit comparison I will do to the SF one is that.. I feel the prices at this ABC are a little more expensive? Is it just me or what? o_O"

    Anyway. It was worth trying!

I've been there for a lunch a couple of times and found it a enjoyable experience.  First thing I noticed is the decor and ambiance, which is sorta cool.  Next is the barrage of menus you get.... seriously you get like 3 or 4 menus.  On one hand there are is a huge variety, on the other it gets rather confusing.

Overall the food was good (not great), and reasonably priced. Service was efficient, but not vey warm..... food comes out fast, but they just plop it down on your table and quickly walk away.

In short, a place worth checking out.

ABC Bakery is another Chinese restaurants with late night hours up until 3 am. Their menu offers plenty of different entrees and and dishes. In this San Mateo restaurant their decor and tables and chairs are decent. Their restaurant seats a decent amount of people.

I almost always order the pan fried seafood noodle plate, and I always expect a lot but come out a bit disappointed. With this dish I like the noodles being crispy but almost always the noodles come out soggy, drenched in their sauce.

Will definitely be back since me and my friends are always craving food when we are out late. This is one of the restaurants that will be kept as an option up until 3 am.

This place is my in-laws' favorite comfort Chinese food place. However, my husband and I will probably never go back - especially since there are plenty of other good (and even decent to mediocre) Chinese places around.

We went there for a group dinner and after tasting a bunch of stuff I've decided it really wasn't the place for me. Maybe I'm not accustomed to HK style cafe food?

One dish in particular that I ordered was some weird concoction of seafood, cheese, and rice. Strange. Strange, in an oily way.

Maybe we were expecting something closer to what's served at ABC restaurant.

Late night dining in San Francisco is not just Denny's, Sparky's, or the occasional trip to Cafe Colma in Lucky Chances Casino-- there's also ABC. Now working down in the peninsula, I'm happy to see ABC just around the corner from my job. After long busy nights, my appetite can go "beastmode." ABC Bakery Cafe offers a huge selection of Chinese and American style dishes! Baked spaghetti, pork chops, fried chicken, anything over rice or noodles. The portions are big for two to share- and just right for me. After many visits, food quality has been consistent and good overall, but service can lag at times even when it's not busy. All good though... it's nice to see a piece of The City even when you're away from The City.

I have been here many times before.

I was really happy to go eat my
    1.) Wonton Noodle
2.) Half Seafood and Half OX Tongue Baked Rice $8.75

Unfortunately, I was so groshed out and disappointed at my unwanted guest. At the end of my meal after paying the bill, sitting on the second floor, which is ontop of their kitchen, a cockroach climbed onto the table and crawled all over the finished dishes. It was not leaving and we had to ask the waiter to take it away. I always thought this place was super clean, but too see a cockroach on the dinner table is too disgusting.

Too disappointed to ever go back. Good bye ABC in San Mateo.

If anyone wants to go, I suggest, do not sit on the second floor.

I lived in Hong Kong for 2 months and fell smack dab in love with the city and furthermore its food. At first I was confused by their seemingly jarring patchwork fusion of British and Chinese cuisine, but once I figured out what to order I never looked back. If you've never had HK style food, it's really not Asian fusion and more of a sort of mosaic of Eastern & Western influences. I will always remember Mi Ni Macaroni and baked seafood soups fondly.

There are several HK style cafes around the Bay and I never realized how lucky I was to be near them until I left. Now I'm stuck with my craving for HK style milk tea and baked pork chop over rice with nowhere to go--both of which, by the way, this place does excellently. My friend judges HK style cafes by the strength of their milk tea and this place is his favorite. This location is also way better than the ones in the heart of SF; I would say runner up would be Venus Tam Bakery in Newark.

This place is also open late. I usually don't find myself hitting up HK eateries unless it's late at night, for whatever reason, and this is a great place to go after barhopping or clubbing.

ABC gets really busy around peak hours (i.e. 2 am), but I've always been seated promptly. Of course, service is average for any Chinese eatery. Once they gave my friend and I a $80 bill when we had just ordered 2 milk teas and shared an order of the pork chop. It really was just an honest mistake though (I'm pretty sure...), but make sure to double check everything! If you come during the daytime, 3rd street is really nice to just walk around, and there's a cafe that sells Ici ice cream and Blue Bottle coffee nearby!

They also have a projector that they use to play soccer (sorry, I mean futbol) games during the world cup.. so Hong Kong! This place really makes me nostalgic. This isn't going to be anything culinarily innovative or amazing, but it's solid, reliable, authentic HK food. Coming here at night just brings me back to getting xiao ye (midnight snacks) after the sweltering humid summer nights out in LKF... and I think that's priceless.

Wow, this ABC is totallllly different than the one in San Francisco.  The decor gave off a fancy setting and feel.  My friends and I went on a Sunday night at around 10ish and it was pretty busy.

I ordered the half & half special for $8.75: baked seafood & curry chicken steak over rice.

Both my friend and I finished the baked seafood side though not so much of our other half.  The baked seafood had like 2 piece of tiny fish, 1 tiny scallop and hmm I don't even remember what else was even in it.  The curry chicken steak was a bit on the salty side with semi dry chicken.  It was flavorful though a bit too salty for my liking.

Our waiter just memorized our orders and messed up on one of my friend's order by giving him rice rather than spaghetti noodles.  They took it back, scooped out the meat/sauce and threw it on top of some spaghetti and rebaked it.  We saw the rice underneath the meat and I won't be surprised if the chefs wanted to spit in it either hahah.

The waiter did come back to apologize.  Overall, the food/service wasn't too bad.  However, the booths I feel are really meant for 2 people and not 4 because its so short in length, my guy friends looked like they were snuggling a bit with each other haha

In general food is alright here. It is not the best HK style cafe out there but it opens till late, so if you get a craving and is in the area this place will do.

Stick with the HK style cafe staples (Noodles, sandwiches etc). The dishes under "Chef's special" is mediocre, I do not recommend them. They make pretty good HK style milk tea, so give it a try!

Service is very typical for a Chinese restaurant, but I like that this place is comfy, clean and the food always come out pretty fast.

Damn, they definitely went downhill. I ordered a curry rice pork chop. The curry was definitely lacking flavor and I think my dish was ultra salty. I ended up going home and passing out on my bed because I think I was super dehydrated from the food. While I was eating the food, I felt myself reach for the hot tea every five seconds unconsciously - usually means the food is super salty.

The taste was really so so. I could honestly make a better curry pork chop myself. I was really disappointed this time to be honest.

I don't think I'll be coming back probably... for another year haha. Usually this is a bad sign though. I don't think they will ever be as good as they were when they first opened.

They'll slowly sink the level of ABC in the Sunset lol

Came here with my wife a while ago, the food was not impressive and the service was just bad.  My wife ordered a baked seafood spaghetti dish, and it came icy cold in the middle.  We informed the waiter right away and expected them to give us a new order that's baked through, but it came back "microwaved."  The cheese was watery and the noodle became soggy, it was just one of the worst tasting dish we've had.  The waiter kindda just tried to avoid us ever after until we decided to just leave and take a lost.

I didn't leave them any tip that time since I vowed to never come back here, but my co-worker told me they over charge his credit card to add extra tips for themselves.  I should double check my credit card statement, and I suggest yelpers not to dine here.  If you absolutely have to come here to eat because you are literally dying of hunger, then DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD HERE!!!.

Nice little place. Clean and new, but otherwise typical Chinese cafe.

Food quality is just ok, rather bland for me, but huge selection.  All sorts of noodles, all sorts of fried rice. There are the usual pork chop with rice and macaroni soup and toasts and everything you can think of that they usually serve at Hong Kong-style cafe. There are also extensive drink choices. Horlicks, Grass Jelly, Red Bean, Lychee, even shaved ice and ice cream.

Prices are also very reasonable and there is garage close by for parking.

Service was also great if you are used to Chinese restaurants. You flag them and they are happy to get whatever you want.
