Review from Genevieve Y.
Scotts Valley, CA
The Abbot's is my all time favorite thrift store. I go there at least once a week for a few minutes to peruse the book section. I always come out with an armful of amazing books, and usually it only costs me a few bucks. I'm an insider on the Santa Cruz County thrift store circuit, and believe me when I say that their book section leaves the competition in the dust. It's organized by genre, small paperbacks are 50 cents and larger paperbacks and hardbacks are one dollar apiece. And that's just the bookstore.
Their merchandising is usually top notch. There's always that one "clearance" corner in the store that can be a bit scary to walk through, but otherwise things are generally tidy and well displayed. There is so much stuff there all the time that it can be a bit overwhelming your first time, so I reccomend taking a good solid afternoon to just spend browsing the aisles, learning the feel of the store and perusing for hidden deals.
Prices tend to be all over the map. Clothing, books, accessories and furniture are much lower here than most other thrift stores. The items in the clothing department vary widely, but by digging long enough one can unearth all sorts of treasures and spend almost nothing at all. All of my favorite shirts have come from here, and I've never spent more than $3 on any of them, ever.
Joann really makes this place the best. She's always pleasant, always kind, and always a great conversation. As another reviewer mentioned, she's a wonderful counselor, and worth a quick stop at the register, even if you don't wish to buy anything.
The neighborhood is also a pleasant one. There is a miniature Bank of America, a New Leaf market, a video rental store, a pizza place and a liquor store surrounding this place, which make it an integral part of a nice, quiet night in. One can pick up a pizza, a book at the Abbots, a movie and an assortment of alcoholic beverages and get a bit of exercise in the process.
The Abbots, in short, is almost perfect. -

. I generally like shopping at this thrift store when I get the chance to get over to Felton. However there are both the good and not so good aspects regarding this thrift shop. The good is the prices are pretty reasonable over all and there are lots of merchandise for sale there. There are certain days per week when all of the merchandise is half off for even better deal. If you have dust allergies and especially if your are allergic to cats, I recommend that you do not shop there. There are a few cats that roam freely throughout the store. Although, these cats are pretty friendly and like to greet people. The building itself appears to be very dusty. The store itself reminds me of a big warehouse even though on the outside it looks like a barn. It is well organized with mostly clothing.

Nothing much to say except that it's church affiliated and even before I figured that out I was pretty disappointed in the lack of anything interesting in the shop. A little weak for a thrift store.

I want to give more stars to the Abbot's Thrift, but they are over-priced on so many of their items. Don't get me wrong, I really love going there and supporting a local business-- but all of these items are DONATED and if it's a used item, then the pricing should reflect so.

This place is wonderful. A very big building with big rooms, front is filled with furniture (the chair I'm sitting on is from there), there are sections for everything else. Well-kept, clean-feeling (inasmuch as one can feel that in a thrift shop). Bathroom (you end up staying there for so long that you usually need to use it) access, dressing room.
The BEST thrift shop -- low prices, huge stock, half-off everything Tuesdays, and half-off clothing on Wednesdays. Lots of junk, but if one looks with minimum attention, there will be a shining gem among the "eh" stuff. I would say that some 50% of my clothing is from there. It's wonderful if like me, you wear jeans all the time, but suddenly need to present yourself in business attire -- Abbot's will have something great, and you won't spend much at all.
The staff, I think, is what really makes this place different. There's "the General, (truly his nickname)," who sits in the front in overalls and helps out or greets people. Then there's a woman who's always singing to the music. Then there's Joann, the cashier, who is a rare mix of delightful counselor to those who have problems and floor person who really knows what's happening, where. People seek her for her simple joy and contageous good-will. In short, she rocks.
I go back because of her, the general feeling of the place, And lamentably, I usually return with an armload of things (having spent $10). My house now looks like the thrift shop...ugh.

I really like this thrift store. They have a nice selection of furniture as well as clothing and shoes. They have a seperate section for more upscale items, which are still reasonably priced. On tuesdays, everything is half off except furniture and on wednesdays all clothing is half off.

I,ve been shopping at Abbot's for about 4-5 years and I used to find great things for the kitchen or to decorate the house at fantastic prices. Lately (last year or so) this is no longer the case. First, very few nice items. Did people stop donating or are things disposed of otherwise? Second, prices went up to sometimes ridiculous levels, like small boxes for $2-3 and items priced higher than Walmart or K-Mart. I don't buy clothes or shoes, but I heard people complain to the manager about the raising prices. The only good deal left are the books.

How can you resist a giant abbot looming above the parking lot, a beacon to to your spiritual yearning for items with history? I got an Ed McBain three-in-one book for 50 cents from the bargain bin in front of the store, and a new silver necklace from donated Macy's stock. The classic thrift store, and a good place to visit before or after the soy chai across the street at the cafe self-nicknamed "the best little pourhouse in Felton."

I can't even begin to say enough wonderful things about Abbotts! First of all, Joann is an amazing person who is dedicated to serving the community. I am the costume director for our local middle school and a children's musical theater company and I ALWAYS start my costume hunt at Abbotts. They have a "borrow" system in place where we can use the stuff we find there as long as we return it in the same condition, and we don't have to pay anything! It has saved our local school and theater group hundreds of dollars that we desperately need for other areas of our shows. I honestly don't know how we would be able to do what we do for our budding thespians if it weren't for this store and Joann! She is sweet, helpful, and a huge blessing to this valley as a whole. Thank you to Joann and everyone else who keeps Abbotts up, running, and organized. You are well loved by your community!!

huge place, tons of clothes and books, but some things that look old are overpriced, most of the nicer shoes are over $15, and the clothes seem to be retail. just very expensive. the books are good, but not a very good variety. furniture and art is crazy overpriced.
