This is a unique place and a comfortable and interesting spot to spend the night. The Abbey spent its formative years as the home of Carmelite nuns who went barefoot and were pretty much cloistered from the rest of society in this former monastery.

But not a bad place to be cloistered in (nowadays, at least) -- on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. There are beautiful grounds here that were pretty much our private playground along with a nice outdoor pool.

We had a lovely room service meal as well. All in all, a fine place to stay if you're in the Quad Cities area or passing through it and the rates are reasonable.

I was driving across the US from Toronto to Los Angeles and my journey took me through the Quad cities.  You might find it interesting that the quad cities consists of FIVE cities, not four...but I digress.

I was looking for a place to spend the night and The Abbey caught my eye.  It's a converted monastery overlooking the Mississippi and it had considerably more character than the usual Motel 6.

I found out later that this place is supposed to be haunted.  They don't mention that in the literature.  I didn't *see* any ghosts but there's definately a mildly creepy vibe here.

Despite the possibility of an "I see dead people" moment, they do comfortable rooms at pretty good rates.

The craziest thing is the elevator.  I made a video of it, if you're curious:
