i love acrylic and gel nails. my natural nails ALWAYS fall apart, and as much as i love the short nail look, my nails just looove to piss me off. however, im from SF, and believe it or not, theres 0 nail salons here that do a decent acrylic job. so i stopped getting them. then i read the reviews and decided to wing it.... anna was AMAZING. quick, clean, professional. NAILS LOOK AWESOME. didnt hurt at all! i know that sounds weird but acrylics would always hurt in SF.

    definitely coming back.

    Do not go.

I would give one star, but the staff was friendly. That was about the extent to the high point of my visit.

We went to get manis/pedis prior to a formal function we were attending that evening. We booked four combo services and were told to come at three. We arrived a little late, I will say, but the staff were still finishing with other clients so I did not think this would be a big deal.

When we arrive I inquire about the possibility of getting my hair blown out. I was told I could do so after getting my pedicure (and then get the mani after). I sit down in the chair to get the pedi and it is OK. Not great - quick massage, not very much attention paid to cuticles, etc. I also had picked a polish color only to have it be completely dry and empty when the esthetician opened it (why it was put on the shelf  in the first place is questionable).

I am then escorted to the hair stylist who proceeds to wash my hair. As soon as she is done however her next appointment came in. Yes, she agreed to blow my hair out with barely enough time to wash me. It was a younger girl with her mother. The stylist tried to ask the woman to wait while she dried my hair but she was in a rush, so she put me under the dryer. Fine - no problem by me. Under the dryer I went.

Forty minutes later, my hair is completely dry (and curly) on top and wet on the ends. The stylist proceeded to blowdry the rest of my hair into a frizzy mess. She then told me that because I have so much frizzy hair (lovely way to phrase it) I would need to be flat ironed. I've had plenty of blow outs, and you can achieve straight, voluminous hair with just a round brush and a blowdryer (and a little product). Anyway, I agreed, and she proceeded to literally pull at my hair with the flat iron for the next ten minutes as her next client waited.

Midway through the flat ironing they begin my mani (super relaxing, right)?

All in all, I left with very flat hair and a mediocre mani/pedi. I question why they took me for the hair appointment if they did not have time, and even though I showed the stylist a picture of what I wanted (straighter with some volume, so I was reluctant to use a flat iron) she could not get it right.

This was bad, but nothing to be too upset about, especially since it was inexpensive ($30 for mani/pedi and $25 for "blowout"). My real issue is once we got home my sister's manicure literally melted off her hands. The esthetician had been rushing and did not bother to remove the remains of her shellac manicure from another appointment before applying paint. Her hands looked awful. 10 minutes later, my own manicure chipped in two places.

I just think the quality is not here. The prices are definitely good, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

I'm not one to frequent or review beauty salons, but I have gone to Abba on several occasions for a haircut.  Soon is very nice and does a great job.  It's $15 for a haircut.  A few bucks more than a Great Clips or Supercuts, but worth it in my opinion.  I never went home and found chunks of long hair that had been missed like I sometimes do at the chain places.  I'd probably give 5 stars if I was a girl, but because I have to sit there under a Revlon or Covergirl sheet trying to sell me lipstick, it makes it a bit awkward.  Also, be sure to make an appointment ahead of time.  I've gone in for a haircut for a job interview on short notice before and was able to get it done fairly quickly, but an appointment will guarantee you're not left waiting.

After reading all the good reviews about Abba Salon, I finally decided to book an appointment and give it a try. i have frizzy/curly/coarse Asian hair, which usually means a magic straight perm once every half a year/a year. Back in Asia, I particularly liked the magic perm because the procedure always left my hair super straight/shiny, and actually made my hair softer than it was before.

I decided to give the $300 procedure (which costs $100 in Taiwan) a try...and it was horrible. I followed Soon's instructions and waited 2 days after to wash my hair...it turned out curlier than before and I started seeing split ends. Even now, 8 months later, my hair is damaged beyond belief.

I went back to Soon to see what she could do for me. Her explanation was that her solution for the perm is organic and thus, gentler on the hair. The way I see it, she messed up. I noticed she skipped steps and used minimal solution (to save money?) during the process...anyway, she didn't provide me with a refund, but instead did a 5 minute "deep" conditioning for my hair, then told me I could achieve the desired effect by straightening my hair every day...well if I had time for that I would, but the whole point of getting a perm is to save time in the mornings!

AND ON TOP OF THAT, she DOES NOT know how to cut bangs. She said that if I was patient and waited for my bangs to grow out, my bangs would be perfect. Well it's been almost 9 months and I still don't see it. Btw she charged me 20 bucks for cutting my bangs and trimming my hair by .5 inches...definitely doesn't know how to do business! I mean, shouldn't that part of the service have been free of charge considering I'd just spent $300 on a procedure that didn't even work?!

First and last visit for sure. $300 down the drain...my conclusion? Save the advanced procedures to places like Strands Salon or Pomegranate.

I recently went here to get a pedicure and manicure and was on the disappointed side. I chose this business because of all the great reviews on Yelp. Apparently, it recently changed owners. The new owner is a very nice lady and welcomed me as I entered the salon.
The salon itself could be more organized and tidy. The manicurist, of whom I don't recall her name, rushed through my appointment. She was in so much of a hurry that she did not bother to fill the finger bowl with warm water, it was ice cold. I used my ATM card to pay and they added a fee for me having done so. It would not have been so bad, had they notified me of the charge.

I hope the business does well and may try again in the future because of the owner .

Hair Stylist: Soon(Susan)Cho 3.5 stars in my book.

Im still in love with my hairstylist back home, but since I recently moved to Davis for school and had not had a haircut for over 6 months it was seriously time for some damage removal and a trim.

Soon was able to take me in within 30 mins of my phone call to set up an appointment(it was a monday mind you), in my book this is awesome, same day appointment! She was very polite, and sweet. She was gently while washing my hair and taking me back to my seat.

My hair is/was very long and I asked if I could get two inches removed and my bangs realigned/thinned(I had been trimming them myself for the past 6 months). Soon trimmed about two inches, maybe a teenie bit more, probably because of the damage. She trimmed my bangs(they look awesome), layered and thinned my tips.

My hair is still very long and hangs below my bra strap still. But I can still tell I got a hair cut, my old stylist use to make it seem as if my hair had naturally shrunken. But overall obviously no two hairstylist are alike, and she did a fine job on my very difficult hair. 3.5-4 stars for Soon.

Sorry to ruin there 5 star streak but I think this is justifiable.

I came here because I was a looking for a place to get and get a wax. Thanks to the Daviswiki, it led me here. Came here on the afternoon and it was dead. No one inside except the workers.

The wax was alright, I could see that the lady was double dipping which is a bigggg no-no. The lady was nice and I actually really liked her.

But after I was done, another one of the employs asked if I wanted to paint my nails. It was only 5 bucks, so I said sure.

I'm Vietnamese but usually no one will never think so. It works to my advantage because Vietnamese nail workers like to shit talk right in front of your face without you ever knowing.

So after my nails were all done, the first lady told the lady #2, in Vietnamese, the price that she should charge me. I know I'm not super fluent in the language but I do know my numbers. She said $45 dollars even. And what did this second lady say it was? $50. In plain English like I didn't know what they were talking about. I was shocked that she would raise the price on me. I was thinking in my head, "okay is my Vietnamese THAT bad in which I don't know what price she said?" Doubting myself, I paid the full. tipped on top of that and gave her the credit card receipt.

Lady number two looked at the name on the receipt and realized that I was Vietnamese. She asked me if I could understand Vietnamese and I told her I could. She was shocked and I could tell that she was turning red. Bitch knew I had caught her red handed and was nice enough not to argue.

I'll let them have the extra 5 bucks because I'm never coming back.

I went there last minute and booked a hair cut because my long long hair desperately needed it.  They squeezed me in and weren't resentful about it, even though I could tell they were super busy.

Now, to put it in perspective, I've been to Mosaic up in Sacramento and they charge $60 for a full wash, cut and dry.  Most places normally cost around $50.  This place only cost $30 (and if you're going in for a trim, it's $25).  Talk about a steal!  (Pray that they never change their prices).

Now it wasn't the most amazing haircut I've ever received, but it was really good compared to some other haircut experiences, and for HALF the price.  Also, the woman was incredibly nice.  Most hairstylists that I go to get offended when you make suggestions (i.e. make my bangs shorter, make my layers shorter), but this woman made sure that when she cut your hair she got your approval before she cut it all off and was super nice about it.  She really takes into consideration what you want.

GO HERE FOR YOUR HAIRCUT.  Don't get ripped off at some other place that won't cut your hair the way you want it to be cut.

I called here and booked an appointment with high hopes after reading all the great reviews.  I needed a thermal reconditioning treatment, also known as Japanese hair straightening.

When I arrived, the stylist helped me get started with washing and conditioning treatments, but often seemed distracted (there were only 2 other customers) to the point where she asked one of her assistants to help me.

One of the steps in my treatment required flat-ironing my hair in small sections.  She yanked the iron through my hair too quickly and ended up making it look frayed and frizzy.  I wanted to take the flat iron from her and do it myself, and I'm confident I would have done a better job of this step.

In the end, after many hours, my hair looked very damaged and frayed, with many split ends and individual hairs sticking up.  As per her instructions, I waited 3 days to wash my hair, but after it dried it looked even worse.  My hair looked more frayed and out of control than before I did the treatment.

It has been 2 months since I have gone here, and my hair is only just now recovering from the damage.  My hair is naturally very resilient and fast-growing, so if you have more delicate hair it would only take longer for recovery.

Overall, I would not recommend this place for any treatment or procedure that requires a degree of involvement on the stylist's part.  This salon's other services might be better, but as far as hair services you might as well go get your hair massacred at Great Clips, for a cheaper price.

Note: This place took over Modern Nails Salon & Spa. But it's still good/I like it!

Who woulda thought that this small and upscale looking salon could reside in West Davis? I don't believe it. Yet there I was getting an AWESOME pedi.

Walked in early Saturday morning and they accommodated me right away. I usually can keep myself occupied on my iPhone, but the nice employees gave me magazines as well. Amazing foot and calf massage, and she even used hot stones. Brownie points because she was sensitive to the wounds on my feet (I have eczema).

$25.50 for a pedi here? So worth it.

I don't go out to get my haircut often, so I'm always skeptical of going to a salon. I looked on http://Daviswiki.org to look at some of the reviews, and found that Abba Salon (formerly known as Abella Hair Design) received a lot of attention. A lot of reviewers were saying that Soon was really good, so I decided to give her a call.

Although she had been booked for the whole day, she immediately tried to find another time that would work for me. And although they don't open until 10am, she was nice enough to book me an appointment at 9am the next day. Now that is GREAT service.

The salon is a modest size, nothing too big or fancy. Just a couple of chairs, but it made sense since Soon and another woman are the only two who cut hair here. I was immediately greeted by smiles and a friendly welcome. She really made me feel at home and comfortable putting my hair's fate in the hands of someone I've never cut hair with before.

Although I had washed my hair before coming, I guess shampoo and blow-dry were included in the price of a woman's haircut ($25 total). It was a little more pricier than most hair stylists I've been to, but I cannot complain because it was EXACTLY what I wanted and the service was excellent.

I basically showed her a picture and said I wanted to keep my hair as long as possible, and she did just that. Nothing more, nothing less. Well I LOVE my new haircut. I even found a coupon off their website: http://www.abellahaird...

It's a $3 off coupon, but I tipped her that $3 anyways, so my total ended up being $25 for a really nice haircut and she even styled and straightened if for me too.

I apologize! This review is so long overdue!

So, after many pleasant experiences at this salon I decided to try one of Soon's haircuts; rumors run all around Davis that she has a keen eye for detail!
Well, I've got a complicated little cowlick and I've always wanted to try out bangs but for some reason stylists could not seem to make it work since my bangs just didn't want to be tamed.
However! This was not a problem for Soon!
After she was through with my hair I now have a completely different look! In fact I could hardly recognize myself! She parted my hair on the opposite side for my brand new side bangs. I look fantastic and not I have bangs!!! But she also cut it in such a way that if I want to part it down the middle my sides and bangs are still even. Plus, if I want to go back to my old look [parting it the opposite way] I still can and it looks great!
Thank you so much Soon for an amazing haircut and a wonderful experience.

I will be back very soon!

And I definitely recommend this salon to anyone. No matter what kind of mane you've got, Soon can tame it. :) Wanting a new look, that's no problem for her either!

I LOVE Anna -- she does the best nails I have ever experienced. I have acrylic nails and she did my fill yesterday -- it's absolutely amazing! My FAKE nails look REAL! No joke. She is sooo professional, conscientious about what you want, and incredibly nice.
This salon is quiet, clean, and actually relaxing (as opposed to the noisy nail and hair places in Davis where the employees practically yell to each other in different languages while you are trying to relax). I highly recommend this place. I will be going to get my nails done here ALL the time now.

I wrote this review for "Modern Nail Salon" which is now called Abba Salon and Day Spa so I would like to repost it to this name of the same salon:

I came here completely spontaneously because I was in desperate need of a nail fill for my acrylic set and happened to be walking my dog nearby. I went inside to ask about the price ($18) and they immediately offered to do it right that moment and even allowed my dog (a cute pomeranian) to stay inside the nail shop with me. The fill was done very well. It was a pleasant, professional experience. Everything looked clean and the women who work there are all really nice. It wasn't loud and annoying like many nail salons are in Davis. I recommend going here and am going myself for another fill tomorrow. My nails lasted nearly 3 weeks.

Better than average, and I'd go again.

Tried the nail services here for the first time today. I used to go to Ara spa but was turned off by the customer service (not the actual job on my nails) there and was surprised to see some of the familiar nail techs here formerly of Ara spa. Tubs were clean, salon was clean and techs and owner were friendly. My friend and I both got a mani and pedi and I'd say the jobs were on par with what we've had in the past. nothing special, but better than most salons I've been to in the area. Maybe I'm a little spoiled since I'm not a CA native and am used to exceptional pedicures elsewhere. I've not been wowed in CA by nail services. A hot stone massage was included which is a nice touch. My nails look good and so do my friend's.

NOT A REAL MAGIC PERM!!  I feel very bad for even having to write this review.  Soon is a very kind and sweet owner, HOWEVER HEED this warning if you are looking for a KOREAN MAGIC PERM!! My hair was damaged beyond repair.  She is advertising the Magic Perm, but she used a Japanese Straightening product and admitted that she did not read Japanese?!  Plus, she did not complete the third crucial step that seals and coats the hair.  Your hair will be stripped and frayed leaving it worse for wear.  I followed her instructions and went back the fourth day to show her all the damage.  HORRIBLE.  She told me to sleep with a deep conditioner and use a straightener.  Isn't that why we get these perms so we do not have to do this anymore?.
My hair was gorgeous, shiny , and straight the previous times I had this perm and I waited ten months in between processes. The tool she used was cheap and she did NOT follow the same process that I had in Korea and Los Angeles.
Also, she admitted to messing up the process but washed it out fast enough and then she took three other customers while I was sitting with a timer.  Careless.  Especially considering the process is over $300 and takes over 3 hours.  My hair is still crunchy and brittle after three months and it is REAL embarrassing in bed if you know what I mean!

Also: I noticed one review that was poor & questioning the salons employees lisences.  All of the employees are lisenced(which you can see) & there was an "intern" who was helping out in December, but she is no longer there. Wheni had pink & white put on, they were careful & great everytime. I have never had a bad experience here.

I have been to every single nail salon in Davis, and this is my new favorite one. The new owner, Diane is friendly and very knowledgeable. It's clear she knows what she's doing.

If you want the best value for your money, along with great care, high quality, and friendly customer service- Modern Nails is your best bet in Davis. Having just gone under renovation, the place is like new and it is clean and neat which is very important to me. On top of that, they don't rush and really take their time to do a good job unlike Y2K- they always rush to get to the next customer and the whole purpose of getting your nails done and pampered seems defeated.

    Prices are as follows:
    Pedicure $20
    Manicure $10
    Acrylic Full Set $22
    Acrylic Full Set french $27
    Eyebrow Wax $10
    Massage $45/1 hour

When I got there it said that they closed at 6:30PM and it was 6:40PM. I asked if they were close when I walked in an she said "No, I waited just for you." So not only did ANNA do a GREAT JOB, she stayed late and made sure that I was taken care of! Great place!

I've had two really good haircuts in my life that get constant compliments and that make me feel good. One was by a French woman in a small salon in London, and the other was by Soon at Abba Salon.

The atmosphere at the salon made me expect something totally different than I received. The exterior was like the gratuitous nail salons that you see everywhere, and the prices were relatively low, which made me nervous because I thought their emphasis would be nails and not hair. I am that kind of girl that will buy off-brand everything, but when it comes to my hair I shell out $80 for a haircut. I went to this salon because of the reviews that it received. My expectations were exceeded! I ended up having to wait for quite awhile because of some sort of administrative muck-up, but I didn't mind too much... and they were extremely apologetic. With only 3 employees (1 to cut hair, 1 to do pedis, and 1 for manis) i was impressed with the amount of customers they were able to serve, and the level of service they provided.

Bottom line: I received one of my favorite haircuts ever. It was simple and took only around 20-30 minutes (which is saying something because I have EXTREMELY thick and obnoxious hair.) I am definitely going to return. And I wouldn't just return because it's a $25 haircut, I'd return even if it was an $80 haircut.

OMG! Do not get your nails done here!  This place is horrible for nails.  It is obviously not a legit nail salon.. I wouldn't be surprised if the women were not certified.  I have been getting my nails done since the 6th grade and I have never had a worse experience.  I went in on a cold day with my girlfriend who recently moved up to Davis.  We got mani/pedis and our eyebrows done.  I had acrylics on which I wanted to remove and later had to go to another salon to have the rest of them removed :-/  I had to ask the girl if I could file my own nails!!!  My friend had been growing out her natural nails and the girl cut them all off after she had told her to keep them long!  We were there for a while and nobody came in to get their nails done whch tells me that we were their first customers in years.  I would never go here again!

The true test is when you wash your hair for the first time after a cut and it's easy to duplicate the desired look.  My thick hair is easier to style now- thanks Soon!  It's one of the best cuts I've had and only $25.  When you see a stylist, be reasonable.  As my friend my college roommate, now stylist, likes to say, "That's not a magic wand I'm holding." Soon was very easy to talk to, efficient and excellent.  I did not go to the nail bar, but the chairs looked very comfortable.  The pedicure clients were chatting away and seemed totally happy and relaxed.  The bathroom had some hard water stains, but I've lots of places in Davis with that problem. Easy parking, good location.

Best eyebrows ever!  I had an eyebrow wax done, and my eyebrows are perfect.  Soon, the owner, is very nice and very meticulous.  The shop is cute, but not super fancy, and the prices are good.

I went here on a weekday and made an appointment, but realized I didn't really need to. It was pretty empty with Soon and a manicurist. I did a shellac manicure and brow tinting. I never had a shellac manicure and I'm glad I did! It really lasts and looks great! I wash my hands A LOT and bump it into everything so this really great. The manicurist was nice and her and Soon didn't converse in their own language which was nice for a change. Soon did my brow tinting and I asked for 1-2 shades lighter because I was going to have my hair dyed lighter. The outcome was ok and I couldn't tell the difference that much however I think Soon was scared to go as light as I wanted because she kept commenting how everyone usually goes darker and that darker is better, BUT my brows are already black and I already told her the reason why I was going lighter (which isn't that much anyway). I would definitely go back to get the shellac because I had a good experience and the pricing is only $30. Brow tinting was $15 which was the cheapest I found around the area.

Very sweet ladies, very helpful. She did a fantastic job and took her time. She could have done the bare minimum but she definitely paid attention to detail. All I got was a simple manicure and painted french tips, but they look fantastic. I'm very happy. :)

A very nice and clean place. When I went there were two women, one doing hair and the other doing nails. I had gel nails done, they were very nice. I made an appointment, but I think they take walk-ins also. They close at 6:30, but since I only got there at 6, they stayed open for me. Good price and good service, best experience in Davis so far.

This place was fabulous! A friend and I went in on a slow Tuesday afternoon to get some pampering and they did not disappoint! The pedicure chairs were very relaxing, the staff was friendly and we both LOVED the hot stone leg massage. Say goodbye to tension and hello to cute, summer-ready feet! The only notes I have are that 1) the salon is now called "Abba". We triple checked the address to see if this was the right spot and indeed it was and 2) There are only three chairs for pedicures, so during peak times you would probably have to make an appointment. We also were very impressed by the prices. $30 for a mani and pedi, $40 for French. Money well spent!
