I have only had Ethiopian food a handful of times before I went to Abay, so I don't have a lot to compare it with.  But compared to the other 2 Ethiopian restaurants I've tried in Nashville, this place blew me away.  Apparently, I love Ethiopian food!  I just thought it was ok before.

My family and I shared a meat combination, Abay Tibs, and a vegetable combination dinner.  The vegetable combo was my fav, and the Tibs were in second place.  Not that the meat combo wasn't awesome, but it came in third.  My son and husband rated these in a different order, but we all agreed it rocked!  Very reasonably priced dinner for a family of three as well!

If you like Ethiopian food, you will love this place!

Me and my wife were heartbroken when we found out that our Favorite Ethiopian Restaurant is going out of business .Thanks Abay for your great service and fine dining . I guess we will be going to the newly opened Meosb Ethiopian Restaurant.

We need more joints like Abay in this country...I won't call it a restaurtant because as far as I am concerned the word "RESTAURANT" is associated with just average food or fine dining which I hate. Abay is a simple establishment and you can feel the love people have towards their cusine and their culture in a place like Abay. I don't know why, but in this country of fast food restaurants and fine dining going to Abay was such a relief. It was almost a spritual feeling.

Yes, the food is deliciously good and the quanity is more than generous. The women working here are very polite and friendly. So, if you like ethiopian food or are just sick of "RESTAURANTS", goto ABAY. You will love it.

Great quality.  Very clean.  Really, really good food.  We split a sampler-type platter and it was very, good.  I'm being picky but the salad at Gojo is much better.  The salad here seemed to have dressing from Kraft and that is my only complaint.

Great recommendation on Yelp or else I would have never tried this restaurant.

I'm a huge fan of Ethiopian food and Abay is pretty good. The food itself is yummy.  We just order the veggie platter and have them bring us whatever they have for the day. Which brings me to my first gripe. Like most Ethiopian restaurants they make the veggie entrees daily in big batches then reheat.  It's a common practice because these dishes are very complex and require long cooking times.  So not a problem, except Abay does not make all their dishes on the menu every day. So you have to go with whatever they have, which can be confusing and we found it slightly difficult to communicate with the server about what was available. Second gripe is there is absolutely no ambiance. None. And most times we've been there it's been empty. Which brings me to my third and final gripe: this place is really hard to find. It's on the side of a strip mall with little signage. And it's next to a vacant storefront so it looks like that part of the complex is dead. This may be part of why they are so empty. Overall I have some issues with Abay but food trumps all for me and the food is good and they are generous with portion sizes. Most Ethiopian veggie food is also vegan, so it's a great, flavorful, and unique dining experience I recommend overall.

Wonderful Ethiopian food here. Very nice, clean eating establishment. Nice service and very good deal for generous amount good quality food. Try the vegetarian platter with 7 separate dishes served with lovely injera bread (serves 2 people)! If you want the fried fish you have to call a day ahead and request it. OR if you want half meat, half vege, try the #1 and the #3, for the best of BOTH worlds.

The prices are very cheap and quantities ample!!

A side note, this place is in a strip mall, back behind on the side, it's hard to see and it almost looks as if it's closed down...but wait!! It's not! Go on in and enjoy! They also seem to accommodate large parties well as almost every time I go they have tables pushed together for such.

NOTE: Abay is now closed on TUESDAYS.

OK, I'm a huge fan of Ethiopian. I have eaten it in many cities around the country and now, I have even been to Ethiopia. Abay was one of my first experiences so it's near and dear to my heart. The food hear is great! It is very consistent as we tend to order some of the same combos every time. I have my favorite Ethiopian in town now, but if I am on this side of town I will hit Abay too.

Word of caution about Ethiopian restaurants; be patient. The culture is not in a hurry which is different for us. Take your time, and enjoy some yummy food. I recommend the Samosas.

This is a real hidden gem in Nashville.  Wife and I used to eat here very often until we moved from Tennessee to Arizona.  Even my mother, and two aunts (from India) called the food very good.  This is a small, but nice restaurant.  I wish this restaurant well.  You can not go wrong with anything on the menu.

NOTE:  Call the restaurant if you can not find it.  They are hidden very well.  I had to call them maybe 3 times just to find them.

I love all the ethiopean restaurants in town, but this one is kind of hidden and not very busy.  I want it to stay in business, that's why I'm giving it a review.  A great place for vegans!!!

Yep.  It's all that.  I'm usually a restaurant hopper, never eating in the same place twice.  And if I do, never eating the same dish twice.  But since there are not very many Ethiopian restaurants it's not hard to narrow down a favorite because Abay has the best tasting hands down.

Ignore the first reviewer because you can tell they had never eaten Ethiopian food before.  This restaurant is definitely a hole in the wall, but the food was very good and the servers were attentive.

Bread which is flat, spongy and sour forms the base of many dishes in Ethiopian restaurants. The entree ingredients are on top of the sourdough bread. Fingers are the utensils. Tear off a piece of bread, scoop up some of the entree and put it is someone else's mouth, or your own. Lick you fingers and repeat. If a tablemate has the flu, it will probably be shared. But the finger lickin' food could make it worth it.
