Review from Marcela R.

I'm so surprised and shocked that Dr. Abate doesn't have more reviews. I don't know if it's just a matter of his patients not being yelpers but this guy is good! I came here as a kid and the fillings that he did are still in great condition many many years later.
I went in for a yearly checkup and cleaning and I felt like I was at home. They knew me as a teen but I haven't been there for a while yet they manage to remember me. It was very impressive specially since they see so many patients. Dr. Abate is the nicest guy and a very sharp individual. He is gentle and gives his patients a lot of information as far as risks, procedures and the dental priorities. He is not after your money but rather your dental health. This is rare nowadays. He is willing to work with you and his staff is friendly and gentle. If you're as scared of the dentist as I am, try out their ipod and sony-sound blocking headphones. Great stuff.
If you are looking for a dentist who knows what he is doing, cares about his patients, and is well educated in the right practices of dentistry, Dr. Abate and his staff are great! -

I like this place because everyone speaks English and I can understand everything that they are saying. It's very nice to be able to go to a dentist and have your questions answered without repeating yourself 2 to 3 times. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable which gives me a feeling of comfort. There are never any surprises pertaining to your insurance benefits. Which is an added bonus. I highly recommend this dental office.

great dentist - terrible customer service. We changed dentists because of his rigid cancellation policy. I made an appointment for my son's teeth cleaning 6 months in advance, but I could not get the day of the week I wanted, I had to take the day they assigned him, piano lesson day. I tried to change it twice - no luck. The day before the appointment I called and asked to change the time because he had a very important test that week. No luck changing the time.
I canceled the piano lesson and called and tried to get the time altered again, no luck. Then I asked to cancel the appointment. I was told there was a $25 charge. I said fine, charge me and give me a day of my choice.
I was told because we canceled my son could not get another appointment, he would have to wait and get called to take any available time - with a few hours notice.
I had an appointment the next week, so I asked if he could have my appointment and I was told no, no switching appointments.
So I canceled my son's appointment, and he never got called for another one. I canceled my appointment and did not get called for another one. I canceled my other son's appointment as well.
I switched all three of us to a dentist that has some understanding of the shifting schedules of high school students. Dr Abate's office finally called 8 months after the switch and said we could have some other persons canceled appointment. -

One of the reasons why Dr. Abate may not have many reviews is that patients tend to leave his practice after they learn of his billing practices. In the medical community they call this up-coding or up-charging. He is a very skilled dentist, but his billing practices are a bit scary. I don't mind paying for his hard work and requisite overhead, but when you have your teeth cleaned and he steps in for less than 2 minutes (during the cleaning) and charges you for a separate higher service level there is definitely a problem. One could argue that he would be entitled to a brief visit billing code/charge (I personally think it s/b part of the cleaning charge), but when the bill comes through at a higher service code/charge you begin to wonder (and research!). Many insurance companies just don't pay these up-coded charges because it is above customary charge levels, but that means the balance is paid out of your pocket. Lastly, if you compare his fee structure against other capable dentists (everybody should do this when comparing costs) you'll find that his fees are materially higher for identical services. So when you get your bill and you see a balance due because your insurance company did not pay the contracted amount or the higher fee from Dr. Abate, just remember he presses the limits in billing. He is a fine dentist, otherwise.
