AAMCAR, a NYC secret. I just rented a compact car from AAMCAR and it was great. They had the best price for the holiday week and they were really nice to work with. Conveniently located right off of the Henry Hudson or a block from the 1,2,3. Added plus, AAMCAR is right up the street from Carmines so bring everyone with you to return the car and have a great family style Italian dinner!

Was feeling very overwhelmed about renting a car in NYC.....good thing I checked out what Yelpers had to say on the topic. Called the morning of my rental, they had what I needed. Hopped on the train and AAMCAR was just a short block from the stop. They got me setup pretty quickly and I was on my way. Three days later, when I turned it in, everything went w/out a hitch. I would definitely patronize this establishment.

+ good service
+ competitive pricing
The reason I took off one star was the car mats were pretty dirty/stained, and the vehicle itself made a very painful sound whenever it was started which made me a teensy bit nervous but everything else was great! -

I've used the branch on 181st St. some years back. Yes its convenient for people who only have a debit card or cash or pre-paid credit card to rent a car with. Just know that, you have to put down a couple hundred dollars, and there is no 'unlimited mileage' package offered for long distance trips. This means you will be charged any extra mileage you incur outside of the designated 'mile package' you buy. You must use the car in the tri-state area or the 5 boroughs (I forget which boundary they impose)
The front desk guy at the 181st branch has a chip on his shoulder and acts like he's renting to you from his personal garage, talks down to you with suspicion of your intentions and condescending about the payment needed to rent. And even if he did personally own the car fleet, he shouldnt make the customer feel this way. I'm no overly-sensitive 'mousy' type either who's easily offended. Glad to see there's a 96th Street branch because next time I rent, I'll go down there just to avoid the 181st location's snotty 'customer service' skills. -

Great service--for the first time ever when renting a car, I didn't feel like I was being ripped off. They don't push the extra insurance, the car was brand new, and the rates were cheaper than the national chains and zipcar. Will definitely use their services again.

I rented a car from them once and I will definitely be back if I need to rent a car again. They have rates that are far better than any national brand. They have great service. I was able to get an EZ Pass for the car for just a couple of extra bucks (I HIGHLY recommend it). There's a gas station next store so if you need to fill up before you give it back, it's not a problem.
Overall, I'm a fan. -

What a find..thanks yelpers!
Thanks so much...needed a moving commerical van in a jam...zipcar needed a 3 day wait for the zipcard..for which I had no time....AAMCAR was open a little later than the website stated..and helped me out.
Polite staff..no frills..just getting you the vehicle you need..cheapers than zipcar (weekend rate)....thanks! Will def use again! -

Friendly and kind service.
Easy pick up and drop off.
Relative good prices.
Fair selection would be vastly improved if they started carrying hybrid cars as Hertz does.

Best rental car option in NYC, hands down. Great prices, good hours (11:30 pm return!) and no corporate customer service bullshit found at Enterprise, etc. Two blocks from the 1,2,3 at 96th Street and at the entrance to an on-ramp to get you right on the Henry Hudson Parkway. I didn't realize one could get so psyched on a car rental place, but this is definitely as good as it gets.

Firstly, they had a car reserved for me. Exactly as they promised (a rarity with other crappy rental car companies).
Secondly, they were affordable.
Thirdly, their service was great.
Fourthly, they claimed that I had damaged the car (I didn't), I was furious as they didn't say anything when I dropped it off. They called me back (and despite me being furious and rude), they were polite, calm, apologized for not telling me when I had dropped it off and waived the charges. Going forward this will be the ONLY car rental company I ever use and I recommend you do the same. -

I picked up a car to use for the day and the woman at the desk told me if I wanted to keep it for longer than the day I would just be charged (standard). I went to Pennsylvania and ended up getting stuck over night due to an oil spill. When I called the next morning to tell them I was going to be late they gave me a hard time because my car was promised to someone else. I drove what was supposed to be an hour in 1.5 hours and when I called as a courtesy to inform them there was traffic the owner answered and told me I was "royally screwing them" since the car was reserved for 9am (not my job to know this, it's called a phone, call me, thanks). He also called me a liar because I apparently misinformed them as to where I was when I called (there was traffic...sorry all the other cars didn't get off the road so I could be on time returning your car sir).. When I told him how rude he was being he was unapologetic and seemed perfectly content in speaking to me in that manor. I decided not to "royally screw" the people expecting to pick up the car after me and drove back and arrived 20 minutes later than the time I indicated over the phone. Although I was late the nice woman at the desk didn't charge me for the extra day but I will never patronize this business again due to the complete lack of respect and professionalism in which I was treated. I am more than happy to go the extra 10 blocks to Enterprise where they are friendly, value customers, and do not overbook their vehicles.

Pretty good on a price basis but the place is a hole and the guy who checked me in was outside smoking with the door open so I smelled like a three pack a day smoker after I left!
