scoops scoops scoops!

I love how they always have vegan options. My favorites are any combination that includes oreos or coffee. Yum! The "brown bread" is made with grape nuts!?

Innovative ice cream and gelato served at a funky location.

You want Guiness flavored ice cream with nuts? Yup.  How about pomegranate with red wine gelato? Yes again.  In fact on any given day you can get any weird flavor on the planet. Scoops is constantly changing things up so you'll never know what you'll get on any day.

Scoops serves the flavors in "balls" so one scoop equals two balls. This means, well, I'm not going there but just use your own damn imagination. I just like the ice cream you perv. It's creamy, yummy and will always leave you craving more. Plus there's as many free samples as you can handle until you make up your mind.

Parking is tight but with all the yummy flavors you won't mind walking for your fix and for your, um, balls.

Yeah, I just had to 'go' there.

If you're the type of person that's creative, fun, and always looking for something new to try, then this place will unlock your imagination and give you something interesting your taste buds will love.  Scoops has all sorts of flavors, and their ice cream/gelato tastes so good.  Their servers are gracious enough to let you try anything you want, and the price is right.

With 400 reviews on the books already, Scoops hardly needs another, but I'm going to give one anyway.

I really like the inventive flavors, the fact that a "single scoop" is actually a double, and the congeniality of the owner (Tae), but frankly, I've had better ice cream elsewhere. If Scoops' ice creams were slightly less icy and slightly more creamy, then they would be truly phenomenal, but as it stands, I can't quite see my way to issuing a 5th star.

Yummilicious!  I can't believe it's taken me this long to try this place.  I had heard great things but couldn't bring myself to drive outside my little 3 mile radius.  Fortunately I was visiting a friend in Silverlake and she suggested that we go - and boy am I glad we did.  The range of flavors (and the creativity involved) are stupendous!  We tried the following:

red wine and lychee sorbet - wonderfully fruity and refreshing, just a hint of wine so as not to overpower the lychee

rhubard - like eating a rhubarb pie

pear and triple sec - another great refreshing treat for summer

peanut butter, banana and bacon - odd sounding but surprisingly tasty

I will have to come back and try more flavors.  They even have durian so I will have to bring my mom.

Also quite affordable - which makes it that much better.

Yup, I just want to reiterate what everybody else is raving about. Scoops is just so amazing and delightful. I was able to have the vegan oreo flavor, tiramisu guiness flavor, vanilla almond chip flavor, and vegan chocolate cinnamon tiramisu flavor. The guy who helped me said there would be some slight alcohol flavor inside the tiramisu, so I was excited over that information. And, yes, there was a little "tipsy" effect for my boyfriend and I from that tiramisu experience. Go out there and enjoy responsibly!

One more thing. The street parking is practically non-existant around Scoops, but I remembered Maria M's tip about parking available right around the corner at the laundry mat. The street parking is only permitted M-F 8am-6pm and then there is No Parking on M-F 6pm-8am unless you have a city permit sticker. I hate how limited the parking any place around LA, but this place is so worth the drive.

This shouldn't be called ice cream. It's like... gelato-ice cream fushion heaven.

Flavors constantly change but you should entrust in the inventions of Tai, Scoops owner and flavor creator. The thing I love about Scoops is that there are the craziest inventions (with limitless samples) that you would never dream of and they are absolutely amazing and quirky.

Let me start off by describing the place: It's small, well-lit, and cozy. There are only about 4 tables inside, with independent artist's work posted throughout. A dry-erase board is located on the wall near the register, where patrons can feel free to nominate a new flavor (one that I keep seeing in huge writing is 'PLACENTA' which is gross, but there are flavors up there that Tai takes seriously and creates a wondermous gelato-cream out of). There are bathrooms. Also, there is a DVD area, where you can bring in your personal DVDs and trade out with the ones that are at Scoops. It's kind of cool; though, I've never actually tried it.

Now onto the good stuff:
options are in funny sizes: 1+1 (4 scoops; any kind); 1+2 (6 scoops; any kind) and so on. 1 really equals 2 scoops is the magic formula. Plus, refills are only like $1.25 for ANY size that you originally purchased and you are free to change any of your flavors any time you refill. As in - if you got: peanut butter-celery-raisin, Jack Daniels Espresso, Red Bull Mango the first time, the second go around you could get Balsamic Raspberry, Vegan Oreo, and Brown Bread the next time.

Flavors: yummychemistry -- flavors I've tried so far (if I can remember them all-- beware, the combos may frighten you but they are incredible):

fig-bleu cheese
Jack Daniels espresso
almond fig (REALLY REALLY ADDICTING!!)
strawberry and black pepper (great until you crunch a piece of pepper and it explodes with pepper-ness in your mouth... not preferable)
balsamic raspberry
mango red bull
brown bread (great vanilla with caramel and grape nuts; a constant offering for its popularity)
Lavender lemonwater
orangewater and pistachio
Basil Banana (oh-so-great with hints of basil, perfectly blended)
Vegan Oreo Banana (THIS is really addicting!!)
peanut butter - celery - raisin (REALLY good!)

I guess I can't write "REALLY REALLY GOOD" after all the flavors b/c then there's no distinction between which to try, but my recommendation is to try everything. Because everything is so fun to try and oh so delicioso!!

*my friend has had Froi Gras before (I know, right?) and she said it's awesome. Her favorite so far is pear blue cheese pecan. I haven't been lucky enough to come in when this one was available, but hey - his other options are good enough for me!!

...ahh my listings don't do the flavors justice! there are so many that I've tried and I can't remember them all right now!

Anyway, I am surprised I hadn't written a Yelp! review on this place, as it is one of the most unique places in Los Angeles that is super reliable in pleasing the taste buds. Go here. Order a 1+1 and refill with different flavors. It's worth it. Go out on a limb and try the freaky sounding flavors, at least with a sample spoon. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised!

If you come late at night before closing, he'll often fill up the leftovers in a pint and give them to customers for free, who are still hanging around. He doesn't refill the stock, though. Once a flavor is gone, it's gone. He doesn't like to keep stock b/c flavors are constantly changing and he wants to keep his options fresh. You can always ask him what he thinks he'll make the next day so you know if you're rearing to go out for another visit.

Oh and for the Yelpers who mention that they think the ice cream/gelato is too icy - I think this is a good thing, b/c then you don't get overly stuffed w/milkfat and you can enjoy rather than feel like purging! It's so light and refreshing (even non-sorbet flavors) that you feel "good" about going back and refilling for new flavors! I'm looking at the gelato/ice cream hybrid iciness as a definite plus.

It's well-worth the travel time, though, so put your ass in gear and head over to Scoops; Melrose and Heliotrope.

It has become a ritual of me and my boyfriend to come here at least once every two-three weeks. That's how much i love this place. I love the crazyness in flavors that the owner can concoct. The only downside is parking, but we've found a secret and don't share it with the world folks, but if you really can't find parking park at the laundry mat and cut through the ally by that that one restaurant..haha..hope that helps some of you who have trouble. Also the brown bread hype is actually true. So it's a must try if it's your first time.

I suggested that he make chocolate lab.

Sometimes people like animals too much and can't take a joke.

But the ice cream is good and you honestly never know what flavor will be there when you arrive. It's pretty exciting. Plus, two balls of ice cream for about two bucks?! Awesome. Get over the "environmentally friendly" bowls and whatnot because you probably had to drive about a half hour to get to this place. Which is fine, because this place rocks.

Scoops makes you want to come back to them over and over again simply because of the inventive gelato flavors they offer.  You can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Lavender, honey, and goat cheese (yes, this is all in one flavor); Pistachio and ricotta; Guiness tiramisu; Green tea and toasted rice.. the list goes on and on.

Flavor offerings that make a foodie or someone with the simplest palate (chocolate, dulce de leche) very happy.   And they're happy to have you sample as many as you want!

Their gelato is creamy, but not too dense that you need a nap afterwards.

Another plus, the prices.  One scoop (which is actually two scoops) is only $2.50.

Stop #2 on our Yelp LA city trek.   Certainly the trendiest spot I've been to in a while.  With all Scoop's popularity,  it's a matter of time before there are talks of expansion... to be followed by accusations of "selling out." I enjoyed Scoops, but didn't fall in love with it like seemingly everyone else.

I ordered the Brown Bread, due to the universal love it received on Yelp and it was definitely tasty.  I think I've finally found a way to digest grape nuts!  I also added some Butterscotch and Guinness, which tasted like coffee ice cream..... very good coffee ice cream.

I'm not going to heap added praise on the fact you can order some bizarre combinations of things I just don't want to take ice cream form, but definitely recommend sampling all you can.  Who knows, maybe goat cheese ice cream is for you.

They're really great about offering samples and the prices are fantastic.

Scoops is definitely a must if you've never been or are simply in the area.

Scoops will inspire your taste buds. This is the most mind-blowing ice cream experience anyone could have!  The various ice cream flavors are so beautifully thought out, with vegan options available and some sorbets.  My favorite flavors are the Brown Bread, which has some kind of granola and brown sugar amazingness swirled in sweet cream, and the Lavender ice cream which is so light and sweet and charmingly lavender.

And always remember folks: One Scoop is Two Balls!

I know, I know.  It already has 400 reviews.  But I wanted to share my wonderful experience.  Yes, the flavors are new and amazing.  I wanted to get a pint- 1/2 vegan strawberry balsamic, 1/2 pear-triple sec- ginger.  I asked the owner if he'd split the pint, and he said "yeah, and we'll put it in two separate containers so the flavors don't melt together".  Ok, cool.  He then proceeds to fill both pint containers over 3/4 of the way full.  I'm freaking out, but decide that buying 2 pints of ice cream instead of one isn't a tragedy.  He only charges me for 1 pint (plus the scoop I ate there)!!!  I was so stoked that I even left a tip (which I usually don't do at fast food places).

Sorry Pinkberry.  It's over.  You're too expensive and rip me off.  It's me and Scoops from now on (and the pear-triple sec-ginger is AMAZING!!!).

Scoops.. Scoops.. Scoops..

wow.. i heard so much about this place.. and i thought it was just going to be all hype.. like sprinkles.. pinkberry.. and so on..

but no..

talk about HOLE in the WALL.. but one of those hidden finds.. but it looks like this diamond in the rough has been found many many times.. and everyone has been delightfully pleased..

I'm not a fan of the crazy flavors usually because I don't like them but they let you try all of them.. they are the nicest people in the world!

i ended up getting a jasmine citrus flavored one and some other one.. but all i always remember is BROWN BREAD..

grapenuts with brown sugar.. but frozen.. crunchy.. and the last scoop sold to.. who? the BF? how could he..

well at least i got to try some.. but when i finally managed to go back again..

i got a WHOLE portion to myself.. and.. hmm.. guess what?.. i wasn't as good as the first time..
and again.. whatever flavor was in his cup was what i wanted...
why can't i just have my own.. why can't i just be happy with what i have..

i should go around and eat a bite out of everyone's cup.. hm.. do you think they would kick me out?

Yay!!!  Finally got to cross this bookmark off.  My BMF calls me this evening because he needed me for advice.  Feels good to be needed and even better to be able to help a good friend.  We headed over to Ord Noodles for dinner my second time in 4 days http://www.yelp.com/us...

Scoops is really close to Thai town.

Very interesting flavors.

I loved the mango and kiwi sorbet, so refreshing, fresh, and light

The coffee and rum was delicious, you could really taste the rum, the flavor combination reminded me of tiramisu.

We were actually given an entire pint of ice-cream for free when they were closing and the guy behind the counter actually remembered what other flavors I was contemplating.

Oreo with marscapone and chocolate with guiness (which I liked more).  It seems I like alcohol in my ice-cream
-----------
So I never did finish my story about the BMF and why he needed to pick my mind.  He wanted to know how to un-friend someone and after our tour of noodles and ice-cream, in the end, my suggestion was that he had every right to distance himself from someone he  no longer felt comfortable with, but for the sake of harmony, don't be confrontational.  Mama Yelp told me yesterday to practice what I preach or save the speech.  And in thinking about this, I see that I need to check myself before I wreck myself.  It's always easier said than done.

me:                           can i sample the coffee / jim beam?
scooper chick:        sure!
me:                           mmm, it has a spike. what's jim beam?
scooper chick:        alcohol.
me:                           oh, okay.

I got a single scooper with half Coffee / Jim Beam and half Dulce de Leche. It was good, the Jim Beam was strong.

You get a cute little plastic bowl. If you bring it back, you can buy another scoop at refill price. I think they need to have some recycle bins for the cups though. Total waste of plastic and earth.

I thought the ice cream was good, very good, but I don't get all the hype. I guess it's just ice cream to me.

Now I'm not sure if this is the best ice-cream ever cause I am no ice-cream connoisseur (Rite-Aid ice cream keeps me satisfied), but it's definitely one of the reasons I love being in LA: the local, straight-forward, no-extra-frills, mom-and-pop type of spots.

Don't get me wrong - I totally give props to places who have it all: the intimate ambience, fancy looking furniture, sexy staff (not to say Tai, the owner, isn't a stud), expensive-therefore-it's-good -food menus, and the celebrity groupies.

But Scoops satisfies on the opposite end of the spectrum. Simplicity at it's finest: Tasty Ice Cream, Low Prices, Cheesy Decor, Random Couches, and Great Service.

It makes you appreciate the owners for focusing only on what they love doing, and that's making great ice cream and coming up with exciting and innovative flavors.

Scoops has the honor of receiving my first "Five Star" rating b/c this place is THAT GOOD. i love a few things in life, including gelato, bacon, and peanut butter---this being said, i walked into scoops and there it was, banana-bacon-peanut butter gelato.. which tasted like a banana, peanut butter, bacon sandwich! Scoops is also very generous on the samples, we nearly sampled every flavor that day and the employees encouraged it.... if you're looking for great gelato that will excite your senses, go to Scoops

I really want to write a review that sets itself apart from everyone else's, but I'm not sure that I can.  All I know is Tai is the mad scientist of frozen delights and the number of loving reviews here proves that.

All I really have to say is that the last handful of times I've visited Scoops I've had such diverse flavors as oreo and mascarpone, vegan raspberry tiramisu, chocolate and jack daniels, mango and red bull sorbet, horchata, strawberry and black pepper and jackfruit and lime.  All of them were downright delicious and lovingly handcrafted.

Tai seems to want to stay small — rumor has it he'd asked to be taken off Yelp's Top 5 — and I'm totally fine with him doing that.  If he runs only one location for as long as he stays in business, great.  I mostly want him to keep doing what he's doing and push the boundaries as far as he can.

"One scoop is two balls."

I learnt this today when I went to Scoops. So when the normally demure Amy K asked if she could have a lick of one of my scoops, I looked at her askance. This is a public place, woman!

Actually, I've been to Scoops twice now. It's no secret that I'm a fan of Mashti Malone's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and I needed to do a taste comparison with the other Yelp favorite in this field. My expectations were high after reading about the foie gras and onion and the bacon and maple ice creams. I'm a sucker for exotic flavors. So I was disappointed on my first visit that the flavors on offer that day were, well, kinda normal. I settled on the brown bread ice cream and the mango and lychee sorbet. The brown bread was admittedly good. Sweet streaks of caramel with crunchy honeycomb bits. The mango and lychee sorbet tasted a bit artificial for my liking. More like canned lychees in syrup than fresh lychees. But really, it was the exotic I was craving and I left unsatisfied.

Could my fellow Yelpers be so wrong about this place? The very same Yelpers I trust with my KBBQ, taco truck and cupcake recommendations? I had to give Scoops a second chance.

Second visit. Still no foie gras and onion. Damn! Still no bacon and maple. Damn damn! But I was committed to trying a couple of other flavors so I went with the almond and fig ice cream and the mango and sake sorbet. And I was duly rewarded for my persistence. The almond and fig was sweet like an overripe fig. Absolutely delicious. And the mango and sake was subtle this time. Clean and fresh and not overwhelmingly sweet.

But I still didn't get the wacky, crazy stuff. And I think that's the appeal of Scoops. It's like baseball cards. You just need that last one to complete the set so you keep buying gum. And for me, that last one is the foie gras and onion. So I'm gonna keep coming back until Tai, the owner and mad genius behind Scoops, relents and breaks this one out again.

And the next time someone asks to try one of your flavors, tell them to get their own serving. This ain't no two girls, one cup deal!

Only I would purposely go out for ice cream at night in the dead of winter but turn the heat on in the car and wear a blanket wrapped around me on the way. What can I say, ice cream and frozen yogurt are the only sweet items I ever really crave and just because I naturally produce no body heat, doesn't mean I'm not going to indulge.

I had to have the strawberry-rhubarb because I had just been telling Mark about it's magical qualities not 5 minutes earlier and I am not one to slap fate in the face. The mister got a scoop each of Bacon Chocolate and Brown Bread, the flavors being pretty tame on the day.

The ice cream was delish but halfway through I had to stop because it was too sweet. Um, I didn't think my body would ever reject sugar, but it happened. I don't even want to think about how many cups of the stuff goes into a batch because if I can eat Ben and Jerry's without problem I know it would just make me cry.

Still, when the guy working the counter gave everyone inside a sample of the remnants of the Vegan Blueberry-Coconut I took a bite and  while the flavors competed with each other for dominance a little too much, it tasted so fresh I still enjoyed it.

Sugar overload or not, I will be back to see what other kooky concoctions Scoops can come up with, frostbitten fingers be damned.

Here's the scoop about Scoops:

Scoops is so awesome that I if were ice cream, I'd want to be made, bought, and eaten right here.

And these are the reasons why it rocks:
The prices are great.
The cups are bio-disposable. Eco-friendly, people!
It's all made fresh from a hardworking COMMUTER.
It's right by LA City College so college kids can get their cold sweet cravings satiated.
It's smack dab right in Bicycle Central (next to the Bicycle Kitchen and across from Orange 20).
Aaaannd they even have vegan flavors! WHAAAAAT? As Japanese kids would go, "SUGOI!!!!!"

Gelato here is a must. Go, go, go!

p.s.
They have art gallery showings here too. How friggin sweet is that?

Nothing frivolous about this gelato shop, except for the outstanding gelato! Holly cannoli...I ordered Pistachio Lemon, Coconut Thai Iced Tea, Blueberry Mascarpone, and Brown Bread...The Pistachio Lemon was my favorite, combining 2 completely different tastes and marrying them to perfection...The Thai Iced Tea was my next fave...Blueberry Mascarpone was nice...Brown Bread which is everyone's favorite was a bit too sugary for me, good in small doses...So many interesting flavors, I'll have to try four new ones next time...

The staff was extremely helpful and friendly with smiles aplenty...

I had to write my first review about Scoops!  The flavors are amazing....the owner gets in at the crack of dawn and makes everything from scratch that day, and you can tell he really thinks creatively about the whole thing.  I mean, geez, Sea Salt + Caramel...Guiness + Chocolate...Maple + Oreo...Balsamic Vinegar + Raspberry...he even makes vegan gelato totally non-threatening and so close to the "real thing."  My current favorites are anything plus Strawberry, especially Jasmine or Basil, even though I don't like Strawberry from anywhere else.  Oooooh, and sorbets that are fruit + wine, especially the Blood Orange + Merlot.  I think that day I sat there for about an hour getting refill after refill!  The selection changes every day (except for maybe a couple of holdovers and the reliable standby of Brown Bread), so half the fun is seeing what's new.

To add to the experience, everyone who works there is really friendly and makes you feel welcome.  You can try every single flavor, they won't get all stingy if you can't make up your mind.  The owner is super nice...when I was studying for my huge exams he would hook me up with pints of my favorite flavors and ask me how things were going.  It saved my sanity, I'm totally naming my children after him.

Finally, the price - $2.50, recently up from $2.  For two huge scoops (they call it one scoop).  Plus free sprinkles.  For unique, handmade awesomeness.  Amazing.  I don't know if they still do it, but you used to also be able to refill your cup for $1, however many scoops you had ordered.

I used to drive across the city from Santa Monica just for this treat, and now that I've moved to Orange County, I'll drive there on any given lazy Saturday, braving downtown traffic, for two scoops, then turn right around and drive home.  Totally worth it.

SCOOPS is the BEST. I was there yesterday and sorry that I got the day wrong and missed the "Zombie-themed Ice-cream Day" special. Drats.

I did however fall in love with Scoops' "Pistachio-Lemon" which is so amazing I cannot explain it. The "Coconut-Horchata" wasn't bad too. I am an adventurous eater so I love the kooky flavors and blends that Mr. Tai comes up with. I have yet to try the famous "Bacon" ice-cream which is never there when I visit.

Boogie my dog endorses Scoops too. I don't feel so guilty about giving him taste-tests when one of the Scoops boys told us that they have a customer who always orders a CUP of "Brown Bread" for her dog. Imagine that, a WHOLE CUP! And these are generous servings. A cup of Scoops ice-cream could be a meal unto itself. Take for example, yesterday's "Goat Cheese and Basil". My BF: "Hey! It's like I'm eating a pizza!"

It is just as well that Scoops' ingredients are all low-fat, mostly-vegan and au naturale. And for only $2.50 per CUP/double-scoop, who needs Pinkberry? (I am so over Pinkberry, anyway)

Holy Jesus!

My amazing girlfriend Kate, who is pretty amazing, took me to this amazing place, where I was definitely amazed.

The place is really simple in decor & function, but their flavors are the thing to write home about.  My mom wondered why I was writing home about a gelato place, but let's just say I was that blown away.

Just a few flavors they had that day:

Brown Bread
Chocolate Bacon
Pomengranate Poppyseed
Lavendar, Goat Cheese & Honey
Berry & Balsamic Vinegar

There were a lot more too that I was dying to try, and since I haven't yet, I plan to be back soon.

4 1/2 stars..   Wow!!  Went here for the first time today. Excellent Ice Cream, friendly service, and cheap when compared to that Pinkberry crud that costs five bucks a throw.....
