HELLLA GOOD STEAK !!! dim, dated, and an awesome place to get into the local state of mind. Reminded me of "Paul Bunyons" in "The Great Outdoors" the chef larry is like sam from cheers and the girls are all hard-working hotties.

We were out-of-towners when we hit AA. We were a bit surprised to hear that a totally "local bar" in the traditional windowless storefront had quite nice steaks, but most interesting places closed so early that we ended up here. We enjoyed it!
Our ribeye steaks were big and juicy, served with horseradish German style. I loved the crunchy salad, too, with the house blend of bleu cheese and ranch dressing. Great idea!
The bartender was friendly and a good server. She made us feel right at home. If you're looking for a casual, easygoing experience with remarkably good food, AA is a good bet. They have a decent number of other choices if you're not into premium steak, too. Sit at the bar and relax! -

We go and stay at the Carter House Inn occasionally and this place is a couple blocks away. They have great steaks and for great price. I think $22 for salad, steak, and a starch. It's divey but so is most of Eureka.

5 stars because it is what you expect. They are what they are and they are good at it. My boyfriend's dad took us and another friend here last night. They all got stakes and I got the fish and chips. You get a LOT of steak here! Everyone enjoyed their stakes a lot (although no one was able to finish) and my boyfriend's dad thinks he will need to come back next time he is in town. My fish and chips was good- they were only lightly battered, not terribly fried to a crisp like most places do. The fish instead was still flakely and tasted and looked like fish. I got half onion rings and half fries, but I wish I had just gotten all onion rings. The salad that came with my dinner was okay, but I was impressed that I even got a salad in a bar with fish and chips...was not expecting that!
There was one waitress/bartender, but I thought she was very efficient and even though she apologized for not coming around a lot, I did not notice. -

I love it when you can sit at the bar and order & eat food -- this is that type of place. They specialize in steaks, and they're pretty damn good.
Price was reasonable and the beer was very cold! Good service rounded out a positive experience. The bartender/waitress was very helpful in spite of my two drunk & loud buddies who were sitting on either side of me -- kudos to her for serving us our (late) dinner! -

OH, I hadn't been here for years. I remember the martinis. Man ,I could use one with my stress. MAN, was it a good one. Whew. Done in 45 seconds flat.
yes, this place is a dive bar with nice locals across from the jail. I had fish and chips tonight. Hubby had Top Sirloin. I loved my fish. YUMMY! Drinks good, nice waitress katie.
We sat at the bar, we watched the fish tank....and the Shark tank. I shouldn't drink martinis and watch fish. ....... -

Eureka, CA
This place is great. Delicious steaks and fantastic drinks. The one thing is that there is usually only one waitress, if that. If you demand speedy service or even special acknowledgement when you walk in on a weekend evening just don't go.
Here's the skinny: It's a bar. It has great steaks, but it's a BAR. I've seen too many people storm out (and probably whine to their friends about bad service -- unjustifiably sullying the reputation of this great place) because the overburdened waitress didn't take their order in 3 minutes. Don't expect 5 star service (though the waitresses are always super nice). Shall I say it again? It's a bar.
Walk in, grab the first available table/stool, and they'll get to you.
Best dang steaks around. -

If you want steak in Humboldt- here ya go! I had the best service the two woman bar-tending and serving where not only friendly fast and knowledgable but also honest! Our drinks where very reasonable. I got more food than I could eat but it was so good I wanted to keep eating! I will deff. come back again! I really enjoyed this bar, we came in to play shuffleboard for our anniversary and ended up staying to eat and drink.

It doesn't get much better than an excellent dive bar across from the jail that serves up the best piece of meat in Humboldt County! See: http://www.liveworkdre... for more.
I've a wanna-be vegan and haven't touched meat in over 25 years but I love coming here with my carnivore hubby. He gets his carnivore needs satisfied, we both get good stiff drinks and the company is some of the most entertaining around.
Uptight city people, stay away. This is the kind of place that invites patrons to slow down, put your damn iPhones away and relax. Turn to the people next to you to have a conversation (gasp!), enjoy the old timey atmosphere and get into the groove of the old school Humboldt Nation. If you find this place too dingy or old or beat up, then you're just not getting it.

That was delicious. A Bloody Mary to die for and a steak to eat after. The horseradish was spicy, the meal was enough to share. It was the best salad I've ever had out of iceberg lettuce.

Touted by others as the best steak in Eureka by others on this site. I'm from out of town so took their advice. They could very well be right. Ribeye was very tasty and a good sized portion. We (wife and I) not at all disappointed. The waitress was a wonder as it appeared she handled the whole place by herself. I would go back if the occasion should arise.

Seriously, I love this little dive bar across from the Humboldt County Jail. It's like a local secret for the best steak in town. Locals who visit this bar are very entertaining to watch and it's a great place to mingle. I've only had the steaks here which as always the best and might I add the onion rings are amazing. I don't eat red meat often but when I crave a good steak and a stiff drink you'll find me here. Definitely worth experiencing.

So you've got yourself a bad case of the slung-rovers eh? A little too much fun at The Shanty the night before?? It's ok, it happens. Just head over to the AA 'round noon-thirty or thereabouts, and do try to get yourself in somewhat good working order before heading out, it's only polite. Grab yourself a stool and order up a Mary - extra spicy, extra bloody - and a Ribeye, on the double - extra rare. You'll be ok. Trust me.

This is a super neat bar. Divey with a hint of redneck and fine prices on alcohol. But the real story here is the food. Great steaks and sandwiches for fair prices. The onion rings are awesome though the fries are a little generic. I recommend this place to anyone in need of a good night of steak and booze a surprising match made in heaven.

You want a steak? They've got steaks. They've got porter houses, rib eyes and pretty much everything in between. Now that O-H's has closed, the spots to get a decent piece of beef in Humboldt County are getting fewer and further between.
To satisfy our carnivorous urges, my wife and I went down to the AA Bar & Grill and ordered two sirloin steaks and some gin & tonics to help wash them down. It had been about 3 years since I'd had eaten a steak, even longer for my wife. Needless to say, we were able to put away maybe 1/3 of our portions while the elderly folks next to us wolfed their porter houses (twice the size of our sirloins, mind you) in about half the time we did.
I'm guessing the trio were a bunch of old pros when it comes to steak enjoyment and they certainly showed us what's what. I especially admire them for smothering their steak in the horse radish dipping sauce that accompanied the fine cuts of beef. The atmosphere of the place: Sports bar meets steak house. Service is superb and the bigger the cut of meat you get, the more respect you earn from the other patrons. Oh yeah, they've got pork and chicken, too. -

I read the previous reviews about this place here on yelp, and they were pretty much spot on.
Came here first time on a Wednesday night and saw the local crowd. Sat at the bar, which is pretty much the only place you can sit, and had a hearty top sirloin. I asked for it to be cooked medium and it came to me with about an inch of dark pink in the center and was just a little bit tough to cut through with the knife. I consumed all 16 ounces of it though, and left satisfied. Even though I haven't tried any other steak in Eureka, I would still come here first and foremost if I want great tasting cow. Oh yeah, the horseradish is nothing to mess around with. They give you so little, but it packs a kick when you first put it in your mouth then a punch when you feel your nose clear up and your eyes start to water. Great overall experience. -

Smack, smack, and smack. Hit the nail on the head with this one. Steak, salad, frings, and a beer for each for 45 bones, and that included the gratuity. Meat was well prepared and cooked to perfection. I would also recommend the Great White. It is on tap and locally brewed. Within moments of sitting down we had lively conversation with locals and other travelers alike. I loved that it is a dive across from the county jail and its name is AA. Two big thumbs up.

Great rib eye steak....perfectly prepared. The evenings soup selection was split pea...tasted as if it was prepared that day on site. Flavorful and just the right consistency. The service was excellent. Our server/bartender was attentive and very pleasant. Seemed like a very nice local bar/restaurant. Will surely return for dinner or lunch again. I am told the hamburgers are great. Plenty of off street parking.

Eureka, CA
This is the only place in Eureka that I know of where you can get a truly good steak. The meat is grain fed and perfectly grilled; if you ask for medium rare, you get medium rare. I've found it frustrating at other places when they just can't seem to cook the meat correctly.
You can choose from a porterhouse, ribeye, or top sirloin, all of varying ounces. (You can get a 50 ounce+ steak on advance order if you want a truly beautiful artery clogging experience). They serve good, strong horseradish with every steak. The steaks also come with fries and/or onion rings, and they have soup available which is usually homemade.
Its definitely low key and grainy, but keep in mind looks can be deceiving; I love going there and its one of Eureka's 'best kept secrets'. Those in the know will always recommend this place. Its 21 and over so definitely don't bring kids. Call ahead on weekends because it gets packed, and don't try to place a carry out order during peak business hours.
All in all, great dirty martinis, mellow atmosphere, shuffle board, an area in back to smoke or chill if you so choose, and most importantly no-nonsense, good steak. Word of mouth and local enthusiasm for this joint keeps the place busy, to the point where they really don't need to advertise very much. Its always pretty busy, and as a heads-up, its not great for larger parties without advance notice. -

This place is awesome! Espically the authentic shuffle board! Great local hole in the wall type of place.

for a little downtown small-town dive-bar, this place does have great steaks!

Humboldt, CA
Great drinks, amazing steak. The soups are usually made from scratch. Know what you want to order when the waitress comes up, no hemming and hawing or asking for strange sides or beverage concoctions. Don't you dare ask for a menu. Expect to be stink-eyed or have your experience sullied by salty waitresses if you do the above. If you know what you want and you're familiar with the menu you will be greeted with kindness, and one hell of a steak.
Example of proper ordering at AA Lounge: "I would like a medium rare 16 ounce ribeye, half fry half onion rings, with the soup. Can I have a side of house dressing please, and another 'insert beverage of your choosing' here?" -

AA has the best steaks in humboldt county while serving stiff drinks and displaying good sports on a daily basis. A must eat restraunt!

Eureka, CA
Everyone went on and on how great their steaks are so we gave it a try. If you like your meat extra fatty - and some people do, then this is the place for you. Remember the fat makes the meat tender, but I prefer to go to a place that know how to cook less fatty meat without making it tough. I will sick to Oberon and Shamus T-Bones for my steak.

Portland, OR
I love the AA. The rumor is is that it's the best place in town for steaks and it's true. It's a no-frills steak with no-frills sides and plenty of atmosphere. You can tell who the regulars are; the bartenders remember their names and AARP numbers, they know what they want without slaving over the menu posted on the left wall above the shuffleboard table ("hint hint" for you newbies), and they get the half fries half onion rings option with dinner. After you have been here five or six times you can consider yourself a regular and reap the benefits of name recognition and borrowing the house newspaper. You will appreciate the doggy bag for your steak and eggs the following morning. While the non-steak options are delicious, why opt for them when you can enjoy their fantastic steak? Plus, you will be a better person for knowing Larry. He's the bee's knees! Nice as can be, memory like an elephant and fast as you can be behind a horseshoe bar. They have a 32 ounce porterhouse! That's so much meat-it's as big as my head!

Eureka, CA
When I heard this was the best place in town to get a steak i thought my leg was getting pulled, until I tried it! Absolutely one of the best steaks I've ever eaten! The trimmings aren't much and the atmosphere is that of a dingy bar, but the steak is awesome! The service is good, and they can make a good drink.
