I really enjoy Whistle Stop... they have a very relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels like they are a regular.  They frequently update their Facebook page with events and photos from the restaurant and they play an active role in keeping Renton a nice place to be.  They have a great beer selection, a delicious menu (the gorgonzola pasta is HEAVENLY but really really heavy and not so healthy) and the breakfast always looks yummy, although we have yet to come in early enough to partake in it.

The parking lot is itty bitty, so plan to park on the street a block or two away.  And, if they do not have someone ready to greet you at the door, be patient and grab a menu and browse, or help yourself to a seat at the bar... for whatever reason people expect an instant greeter at the front door, but this place is small and someone will come to seat you as soon as they can... I've never had to wait more than a few minutes at the most, and its usually during a slow time when there is only one waitress covering.

The Whistle Stop Ale House is a good alternative in Renton for lunch or casual dining.  Interesting menu options of you're wanting something different from a chain restaurant and a variety of micro brews.

The owners of the business are good folks with deep connections to the community and a history of supporting the redevelopment of DT Renton for the past few years, long before it became in vogue to do so.

Overall though, service and food pretty good, though inconsistently so.

I really wish I could give Whistle Stop more stars, but the service was horrendous. We stood at the door for a good 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged, and then when we were finally seated, the table that was seated after us had their order taken first. We continued to be more or less ignored; Cam wanted to try a taste of one of the pale ales and by the time he got it it was warm and flat.

It's too bad that service was so bad because the food was actually really good. I had the Verona Station (which is pretty much their version of the blue cheese and bacon burger) and all the components were great. The burger was even perfectly charbroiled with that great burnt flavor (in a good way.) It reminded me a lot of the burgers my dad would grill on his barbeque, but even better.

We might give this place a try again if we're in the area, but it's likely that we'll try somewhere else first.

Haven't had a bad experience yet here.  Have sat in the restaurant and the bar, each time the service was good and waitress/bartender friendly.  The wings are AMAZING and they have a really decent beer list as well.  Only complaint is that it does close a little early.  Despite that, I am starting to find myself coming here more and more! :-)

I've been here twice now for lunch and it's just fantastic. The servers are friendly and the food is really good. Especially their soup. Twice now I've order a cup of soup and a half sandwich and end up taking the sandwich home. The first time I had their soup I think I did some record eating as it was gone in minutes.

I'm not a beer person so I can't comment on that but I'm in love with their food.

Nice place in Downtown Renton. Nice selection of beers.  One day in the middle of the week, a freight train went right down the middle of the street.  Quite a surprise.

I went here this past Thursday after a long train ride, and a long flight for my brother.  The front desk recommended it, staying local you know and off we went to the Whistle Stop.  We were given a table right away, and a nice server came up and got us a drinks (local beers) and some chips and salsa.  Yum!  The chips were homemade...and the salsa was too; a good way to start out a late lunch.

My brother had the quesedilla burger...and I had a burger with walnuts on it.  Hmm.  The walnut burger was good, and my brother didn't have any complaints.  The service was pretty impeccable.  If I lived here, I'd be back.

I remember when they threw the fridge off the old building. I was a regular back then. Now they're in this shiny new building, prices go up. Well that's ok, he's got new overhead. Food quality went waaaaay down. That's not ok.
Guess what though? I'm not a regular anymore.

Nobody who works here ever seems stressed out, and nobody is trying to cloyingly over-please or up-sell/cross-promote anything. The beers on tap are excellent and I've enjoyed my dinner on each of four visits. These days, I consider the Whistle Stop to be very dependable and low key.

It's a go-to location for beer, away from any kind of invasive "scene" and after a tough day at work.

Way better menu than you'd expect in a pub. the chicken Marsala is tasty and a generous portion. Our server was good tonight, but last time we had to wait for a table and they refused to seat us at the table we wanted.  The maitre de seemed overwhelmed.
But I will return for the food.  Good selection and value priced.

Shitty service. Stood at the reception area with no acknowledgment for about 5 minutes. Not even a "Hello Give us a minute". Although my husband said the dude busing the tables gave us a nod....whatever.  When we were finally seated we not even given any water. Waitresses zipped passed us for about 10 minutes with no one ever coming to our table. When I finally stopped one of the waitresses I asked if there was service at the table or if we had to order from the bar. (I know this woman saw us sitting there for about 10 minutes) she responds "Oh im your waitress - ill be back" --- really? no apology for the 10 minute wait, no "'l'lI get you waters".... bullshit. We got up and left.
Only reason they got 2 stars is because I like the calamari here. I've brought friends here recently on 3 separate occasions but I won't Ill be back - they lost my business.
We have had shitty service here 1 time before a few years ago, but gave them one more try and was happy until now.
I'm in the business of making people comfortable and this place was uninviting and rude.

Quality food for very reasonable prices, super friendly staff, and a welcoming atmosphere...what more could you want? In a world of elitist bartenders and waitstaff, this is a very welcome change. What really sold me is that their burger is from Misty Isle farms on Vashon Island-very rare to find grass fed meat anywhere, let alone a pub! Highly recommended.

My wife and I were here about a year ago on a trip to Seattle.  We love taverns like this that brew their own brews.  I originally ordered a Salmon dish, they were out of it, then I ordered something else, they were out of that too.  So I asked the waitress what she recommended and she said the Chicken Marsala, so I ordered it.

I must say it was the best dang thing I ever ate, my wife agreed it was just spectacular.  It was amazing and my wife will go here every time we're in the Seattle area.

Came in to try their breakfast one Sunday, and got sat down on some rickety seats which was kinda scary..haha..

We were asked what we wanted to drink, and ordered bloody marys.  While they got our drinks we were looking at the single page, no variety menu.  Me thinks not.

The menu is very small, and doesnt have the greasy spoon staples (buscuits gravy, benedict, chicken fried steak), so we decided to just have out Marys then leave.

Our Bloody marys came about 8 minutes later. yes they took awhile, and my boyfriends was fantastic!  Though, mine seemed to be just tomato juice and vodka.  He forgot the spice.

The place really wasnt that busy, so I dont know where his head was.  Unfortunately, probably wont be back.

Someone please explain their crazy seating system to me...

I really want to like this place more because there aren't many great pubs in Renton and I like the open atmosphere of this place.  The have a good menu (sandwiches and salads are top notch) and a good beer assortment (even cider).  Prices are reasonable for lunch.

BUT, every time I come here they insist on seating me next to the only person in the restaurant. I know there's a plan, but seriously?!  It's empty.  Can I at least have one table empty between us? If you want to sit on the east, they'll seat you on the west.  Like the window?  Well you have to sit in the bar side now.  The most passive aggressive seating system I've encountered. But I keep coming back for the food.  Maybe we both need therapy...

If you don't mind sitting right next to only other person in a 50 person restaurant and listen to them slurp their soup, bump it up a star.

Would not, could not recommend this place.  I say you should go to the Dog & Pony Alehouse a few short blocks away instead.

Tried their sweet potato fries - they do not look or taste like sweet potato fries. I even asked TWO servers if we had the right order.  They were not very good "sweet potato" fries" or fries.  Hubby got the hot wings - smothered in Frank's Red Hot goodness - but the hot sauce and the bleu cheese dip were the two redeeming things about that dish.

Got the Whistle Stop lager and it was mediocre and hubby got the oat stout and he said he's had better.

Ambiance was totally cool and one of the servers was awesome!  But the food and beer are what's important and what this restaurant lacks.

So this review is for my most recent visit this past friday night. I met my friend Roza for some good eats and drinks.  Unfortunately, this go around, their beer selection (rotate selections of beers, wines) did not include my boddington creamy ale, but that didn't stop me! Our waitress was very nice in letting us try shot glasses of various beers for free!  We were happy and made our selections!  This free sample deserves a mention and come back with more yelpers!

I am glad that there is more wait staff here in the evenings. It was so busy!!!  Quick prompt service was a pleasant treat!

I had their cranberry blue cheese with candied walnut salad... DEEEE-LICIOUS!

Saw some pretty good reviews for this place so I decided to stop on by.....first off, I can easily see why this place is either hit or miss with people. No it's not the type of joint u wanna hit up to party or nothin...it's simply an oldstyle all american pub that caters to the local white crowd. They got a pretty decent selection of beer here....I started with one of their smoked dark beers which was pretty funny tasting at first but ended up tasting like bacon the entire way down. I also remember trying the cream ale which was one of the best beers I've ever had....prices are decent and reasonable. Service is friendly....didn't see too many ppl in here on a Saturday night...I here they also have some really great burgers and bar food so I guess I gotta try that out sometime....only thing I found weird about this place was.....they close at 10?!?! on a saturday night u close ur bar at 10?!?! completely unheard of!

    Ahhh...The Whistle Stop.

I absolutely LOVE going to TWS!  If we are ever trying to figure out where to go for a good dinner and some delicious beer, The Whistle Stop always comes up on top.  They have daily specials that have yet to disappoint me as well as a good selection of seasonal beer on tap.  Did I mention the beer?

Jeff - bartender/operator/owner/comedian extraordinaire!  If you get a chance to sit at the bar and converse with Jeff-fa-fa, you will certainly be entertained.  WARNING: Not for the easily offended.  :)

I enjoy everything about this place.  OH!  Don't forget to stop by during Oktoberfest!  They have a live band and the staff all dress up!  What a hoot!

I've been here several times over the past few years. It's a great place in the summer to bring the dog and sit outside if you can get a table. In the winter it's cheery and warm. Most recently I stopped in for lunch and had the porter on tap and the Santa Fe wrap. The fries are pretty freaking delicious. I brought my mom so I could liquor her up and trick her into buying lunch. Though my plan was foiled (she should have had a heavier beer), we had a nice time and enjoyed the food, ambiance and beer.

Not only do we love going to Whistle Stop and really enjoy their food, they have a GREAT employee there by the name of Robin.  Since our first visit here, Robin has given us EXCELLENT service... and always with a smile.  Whether the place is packed or only has a few customers, we get fast service, speedy refills, and lots of laughs.  Robin makes sure to visit with us, each time we stop in, for a bit.  And it's nice to return to a place, time and again, and be remembered.  The owner, Jeff, is also extremely friendly, and he's funny as hell.  He takes time to visit with his customers.... spending a few minutes chit chatting, or teasing (in our case).  There are a lot of places that I enjoy frequenting... but only a few really stick out.

The burgers are always a hit.  Their San Diego Station burger tops my list, though they have a special burger that is BBQ sauce, bacon and Gorgonzola cheese.  OMG, it is absolutely mouth watering.  And I've been told that even if it's not their special of the day, all you have to do is ask for it, and they will make it for you.  THAT is the kind of service that I love.  A place that treats their customers like they want more than your money.... they also want to provide a meal that you love.

I HIGHLY recommend that you "up" your order and get the sweet potato fries.  I love these kind of fries, but Whistle Stop, by far, makes the best that I have EVER had.  They melt in your mouth, and leave you wanting to come back just to have a side of them, and nothing else.

If you're big on IPA beers, they have a HUGE assortment to choose from.

There is something to tempt any person's palate.... all you have to do is get in your car and drive to Whistle Stop Ale House.  I guarantee that you will have a great time and leave with a full belly.

Plus a kids menu that pleases even our picky eater. We always recommend Whistle Stop to our out of town friends, and it has never disappointed.
So sad that the "soup guy" has passed away. He made the BEST soup around. It's still good, but doesn't seem to have his magic touch.

The Whistle Stop Ale House never disappoints. The Atmosphere is Chill Relax. They even have some Board games to play while you wait for your Ordered Items... The Staff is what makes this place welcoming cool =D Very Friendly & Quick. They have an array of Brews for your Choosing. The Food is Good. Very Reasonable Priced also.

I went here after a long day of Flying...I was craving some brew and some Food. I had a pint of brew from The Great Divide Beer Company that they had on tap, I forgot the name of it but ill describe what I tasted, it was an onslaught of the senses. An almost viscous, inky-black brew with a massive, roasty, chocolate, coffee malt flavor that eventually gives way to rich toffee and burnt caramel notes. Plenty of Hops..The Hop profile of that brew had a slightly citrusy, piney, and wonderfully dry hoppy finish. The Food that I saw appetizing were the Steak Skewers, when I finished..My Stomach yelled "yummy goodness."

All I can say it was a Happy Night. =)

I met some friends for some beverages after work here on a week day.

It's pretty open and spacious.  We grabbed a table and we sat off to the side a little ways.  Like the previous review, not really anything good or bad to say.  Kind of ordinary. To be honest, I was a little disappointed.

Staff was on us quickly and we never lacked for anything.  None of us had any food so I'll have to come back and try something.

I was surprised at the family type environment.  I thought the Stop would be more of a tavern.

I never get to play cards anymore.  Nobody has any time.

Except, when my husband and I have dinner here.  We keep a deck of cards in the glove box just for here.  There's something about this place that makes it ok to play a few leisurely hands.  Maybe its because they don't mind if you hang out a bit and enjoy your beer.  Maybe its because you know the waiter will wander by sometime after you order to ask you again what you were having.  Maybe its because the waiter really wanted to play Gin along with us.  Maybe its because they take so darned long to bring your food.  Maybe because its always worth the wait.

Does it matter?  Not a bit - because Husband loves their sandwiches and the Cranberry Gorgonzola salad.  They always have a great selection of beer and are happy to recommend one that is "good" that night.  I think their burgers are great - maybe a bit dry sometimes though.

Their desserts look wonderful.  I would love to try a piece sometime.  They serve Calico Cheesecake.  I know this because I see it on the fresh board, but am always too full to get a piece. I have grand plans to come in just for dessert and coffee - oh, and a nice game of gin rummy.

We are always looking for local businesses to support and LOVE it when we find a goldmine like this! Great place for the whole family, happy atmosphere, great food, friendly staff and the yummiest breakfast sandwich in the whole world!!! The Monte-Cristo is to die for. Its not on their breakfast menu as a regular, but a blackboard special. I will be going back and asking for this again for sure! Can't wait to make this a regular place, I see lots of  wonderful Sunday mornings in our future here!

I've been here a few times before and remembered that although the service was a bit slow, the food was pretty good.
The breakfast we had here this morning just wasn't anything to get excited about. My boyfriend ordered the Meat Lovers Omelet and was pretty happy with it. My friend and I both ordered the Train Wreck (chorizo, peppers, onions and red potatoes scrambled into eggs) which should have been really good.  Unfortunately, the potatoes were cold while the rest of the dish was only luke warm and since this was a scramble... Not good.
Let me tell you what was good though,  our waitress was very personable and very cool when my friend and I both asked for our dishes to be heated. She even took a few bucks off the check for the inconvenience which I thought was very considerate.
I would consider coming back here again....maybe lunch next time :)

They use local for their food which is great.

The food is a little heavy and the kids menu is the standard. My kids love the chicken strips but I think they're too salty and always overcooked.

A great find in Renton not to far from our house. We found this place on yelp and were hoping for a decent breakfast. We were afraid it might be a dark sportsbar with a few drunks in the corner. That wasn't our experience at all! It was bright and cheerful with nice waitstaff. And the food was good, portobella mushroom omelette for me and eggs benedict for my husband. Robin was friendly and professional. We liked the vibe and will be returning there again. Good selection of beers on tap and the dinner menu looked appetizing, too.

We were wanderin' the mean streets of Renton looking for a place to eat.  We happened upon the Whistle Stop.  We are generally fans of "pubby" kind of places, so decided to give it a go.

Can't really say anything bad about the place.  A very friendly hostess greeted and seated us immediately -- in a very comfy booth.  Our food and drink orders were taken and delivered in a timely manner.  The overall environment was very casual and relaxed.   Families with small kids, couples out for date night, groups of friends out for a drink, and a couple of singles all seemed happy to be here.   And, it was clear that many had been many times before and that this is a favorite neighborhood hangout.

Food was fine.  The wasabi ranch dressing on my side salad was quite tasty.  I ended up adding tabasco to my gorgonzola chicken pasta because I thought it needed a bit of a punch (but, honestly, that could just be me).  Mr. H. ended up leaving most of side Caesar because he said it was pretty meh.  But, there was no sign remaining of his turkey and artichokes and a few other things sandwich, which, he reports, was made with real fresh roasted turkey and not the cold cut stuff.

In short, we're glad we gave Whistle Stop a try.  If we lived in the neighborhood, we'd probably go again.  BUT, it's not a place we'd go out of our way to go to.  And, next time we're prowling for food in "ahead of the curve" land, we'll likely drive on past Whistle Stop to see what other Rentonesque wonders await.

I went to the Whistle Stop Ale House a while back and the service could not have been worse.  We sat at a table outside and our waitress hardly came by to provide service and downright forgot about us when it came time to pick up our bill, so I went inside to pay and the hostess who had seated us earlier asked if I needed a table.

The food that night was also...meh.  I don't think I'll be coming back here.  There just wasn't anything compelling about this place and with so many other restaurants in the area, I'd rather spend my hard-earned money elsewhere.

I was way less than impressed with the breakfast here. The food was very greasy and the service was, well, "off".

First the food. I don't eat breakfast out very much because too often I have an experience like I had here. While we did get our food quickly, our orders were incomplete and the food was glistening with grease. I even patted mine down with a napkin. The egg was slightly undercooked. The ham was WAY too salty. The hashbrowns were just, well, greasy. The toast was pretty good though. The kitchen was kind enough to cook one of my eggs over medium and one of them scrambled. However, the waitress made sure I realized that was a "big deal" and that if it were busy they wouldn't do it. Sheesh.

My gf's french toast was blander than she remembered having here before. It was also supposed to come with honey butter but came with just plain old butter. Her sausage was too greasy. She did like the scrambled egg though.

As for the service? The hostess seated us and as it was pretty close to lunch time, we asked if we could have lunch instead. The hostess gave us a snotty "no". She didn't even fake checking in with the kitchen about it. Nor did she offer up when they started serving lunch either.

Our waitress started out by asking us if we were sisters. Which was weird. We really look nothing alike. She was weirdly friendly the whole time. Kinda like fake friendly. It was unpleasant. My gf (who is stunningly beautiful) thought it might have to do with that whole prettiest girl in the room thing. She thought the waitress might have felt competitive with her about who was prettier.

Our waitress also forgot my toast and my gf's sausage. And she gave my gf a cup of tea rather than the pot she ordered.

So, I wasn't impressed. However, my gf says they have good lunch and dinner so I will update my review when I have a better experience there.

I took a group of kids here for Mother's Day - we were Mother's Day refugees. Mom said, "I want time alone."

I piled the brood into the car and drove over here. We parked in the tiny lot (four spaces, and one is handicapped). We were seated immediately. I had not yet had breakfast, and it was already afternoon, so I ordered the standard kid fare - chicken strips and french fries, and something called the train wreck for myself.

The kids had a ball - they enjoyed their food, there was plenty of it, and we had service when we needed it. The room was half full on a Sunday afternoon, so I had no complaints regarding the service. My food was excellent - a huge scramble - literally a pile of eggs, sausage, spices, and fresh fruit. The kids picked at the fruit, completely finished the chicken, and had enough fries left over for a take out box. When it was all over, the whole event cost me a whopping twenty-two dollars

This place had lots of kids friendly attractions including a huge concrete filled bank safe and games. the kids did not get the traditional coloring paper and crayons, but neither did they miss them.

If you are looking for a family outing at a good price, Whistle Stop is a great choice that will make everyone happy.

The Whistle Stop is one of my favorite places in downtown Renton.  It's a bar that feels a lot more like a cafe, with big windows and high ceilings.  Service is always friendly and always slow, but I never mind waiting and chatting with friends.

Best bets for food are the Cranberry Gorgonzola salad and the Renton Station sandwich (though I've never had anything I didn't like here--for serious!).  There's a bunch of beers on tap as well as beverages for those of us who don't drink beer.  The Whistle Stop Lemonade, with jalapenos, cilantro, mint, lemonade, and Sprite, is absolutely fabulous if you like strange and spicy drinks.

They do brunch on the weekends and lunch and dinner during the week. I've never managed to be up early enough for bunch, but the menu looks fabulous!
