I never write reviews for anything, but I had such a fantastic experience at this shop that I just had to review.
I am shocked to see the negative comments from other customers. I had an AMAZING experience!
I was looking to replace my current bike (which was now too small and whose gears were broken), and had been checking out different shops. All the shops I went to were lacking either in inventory or attitude.
I came to Westside Bicycles on a whim. Immediately upon entering, I was greeted by the friendly staff and someone came to help me right away. Within fifteen minutes, I had a comprehensive understanding of the bikes on the market that were in my price range. The employee brought the bikes out, let me examine them, and was very open to questions.
This salesman--I wish I knew his name so I could sing his praises--was the best. When I say that, I don't mean that he was a slick salesman trying to make me buy something expensive that I didn't need. No, he was honest, friendly, incredibly informed, and helped me pick a beautiful bike that is in my price range and suitable for my needs.
I was allowed to test drive 3 bikes (each bike was adjusted to fit me--even though I was only taking them for a 5 minute spin! The salesman ordered the correct size of the bike I chose, and it was delivered promptly. Upon arrival, they adjusted it to me and double checked to make sure everything was ready to go. Also--get this--the price of the bike includes 3 years of service. Who can beat that?
The other staff were also incredibly knowledgeable, and helped me pick accessories.
Overall, I had a fabulous experience. I would come back / recommend in a heartbeat. -

If you love incompetent, outright rude staff and laughably poor customer service, then this is the store for you! After two insanely terrible experiences at this store I implore you avoid this place!

While on travel in New York, my friends and I thought it best that we tour central park on bicycles rather than trying to walk or drive. It just so happened that the 96th street subway stop off the red line let us out right in front of A Westside Bicycle store with a large sign on the window that says "We Rent Bicycles." Perfect!
For $9 an hour or $45 for the day, we could have our bicycles and do what we wanted with them. It was convenient, easy, and fun. I don't know why these other yelpers did not have such a good experience other than I was tourist just visiting and the others are locals. Sure the kid at the front desk was more interested in his iPhone than he was in answering where the best part of central park was for us to explore, but so what, he rents bicycles to annoying tourists all day, of course his iPhone is more interesting.
So no, you will not get 5 star service in the sense of attention from the employees, but are you trying to make friends, or are you just trying to rent a bike and get going? We wanted to rent bikes and get going, and that is exactly what they provided for us. Thank you Westside!! -

Caveat emptor.
This was a couple of years ago, but the experience still rankles. I had come by a very nice frame (with some other parts). I went to Westside Bicycles to get the rest of the parts and have them assemble it.
The "mechanic" measured my bike for the correct seat post size. He did it incorrectly, and ordered the wrong size. I was told that I was responsible for this mistake, and that I needed to pay them $60 for this part, along with the rest of the (not inconsiderable) charges, or I wouldn't get my bike back..
A part which they sized and ordered. Think about that before you do business with these folks. -

I bought my bike here two years ago, and at the time, I got very good service from a knowledgeable sales person, who had me test-ride many models around the neighborhood and didn't try and upsell me into something I didn't need. They remain pretty good at routine maintenance, and haven't charged me for quick fix pop-ins.
However, now that I have my bike, I don't like shopping here. All their accessories are overpriced, some by 20% over MSRP. When I ask about the prices, the staff passes the buck onto management, or ownership. I'm not a fan of overpaying, so I've largely taken my business elsewhere. Too bad. -

Deceivingly small from the outside, this bike shop in the Upper West Side (a sister to other bike stores scattered across NYC) goes far back once you enter its doors. The employer here made sure I was looked after. He informed me that they are happy to do tune ups and other repairs. This comes in handy when your bike gets greasy and the brake wires are sticking out.

We rented two bikes for 2 hours, so at $9/hour we were supposed to be charged $36. Instead, they tried to charge us $79. When we argued with them, they lowered the charge to $58. The receipt then claimed we had the bikes for a total of 6 hours.
Not wanting to argue further with that employee, we called later to catch someone else on the phone and explain. They claim they throw away all records of rentals, so they "can't check" how long we had the bikes.
Never going there again! -

I go here because it is in my neighborhood, but I'd say this isn't a great bike shop. When I first moved here, I had this shop assemble and tune up my bike, which had been transported in a box. I'm no expert on bikes, but I don't think they did a very good job, because my wheels didn't seem to be centered: I could hear them dragging on my brake pads as I rode along. Luckily, they were willing to fix the problem for free. It seems to me this place is geared toward weekend bike rentals and they make their money by quickly churning customers in and out. This is not a place for precision tune ups!
