It's taken me waayy too long to write a review of this church, probably because I'm not accustomed to reviewing churches (at least formally), but here it is:
I've been coming to this church in Long Beach for over six years now. Found it through a friend and was eager to come because I had been attending a church that seemed to lack my entire demographic (mid-20s - 30's) - not so at A Village Community. I was excited to be in a church with others in my age range and others interested in connecting art and creativity with their faith as I've always been a creative type, who also wanted straightforward and traditional biblical teaching.
I ended up staying at this church because I loved the people, the authenticity of the community and the conservative biblical teaching. The pastor, Chris, is uncompromising in his presentation of the scriptures and I really appreciate that about him. However, he also manages to make it very relevant at the same time - without watering down the true intentions and meanings and reducing it only to "what does this mean to me?" or, "how is this relevant to me?" (it's got that element, but so much more). I also appreciated the later service as I'm definitely not a morning person (11am on Sunday and 7pm on Wednesday for Bible Study). :)
If you're seeking to meet and befriend a community of people that are earnestly trying to follow God and sense where He is going, then I would encourage you to visit this church. It may be challenging at first (especially if you are like me and come from a very consumer-based self-focused church) but I think you'll find that this Downtown Long Beach church really mirrors (in all the most significant ways) the First Century church experience where you really live and share you life with other believers who can support you and whom you can support in return. -

Was a part of the fellowship at A Village Community Church and I must say that it's refreshing to be amongst people who are genuinely seeking Christ and are so open to loving on others in a very authentic way. You feel like you're taken into an Art Gallery as you enter, which you are, as there is beautiful artwork displayed on each of the four walls. What's more amazing are the people, they are truly a work of art, unique in design and story. It's fun and enlightening getting to know each one. When you're there ask them what brings them to A Village Community Church and you'll find no two stories the same. They've got being a "humble/conqueror in Christ" down.
A few words that describe A Village Community Church: creative, sojourners, authenticity, beautiful, a jem in Long Beach.
I highly recommend you finding this hidden treasure upstairs next to a coffee shop on First Street. It'll be worth your Sunday morning. Did I mention they've got an amazing pastor ... Chris. -

This church is definitely something special. It's at the heart of downtown Long Beach, that already says a lot. The signs on the street are captivating and as you walk up the stairs you won't even believe you are at a church. The main meeting room is an art gallery converted into a space of worship. The decor is modern and rustic, just the way I like it.
The people are an addition to the meeting space. All the members are extremely friendly and outgoing. They won't make you feel awkward or ignore you. The pastor, Chris, has a gift of presenting the word of God in way that is familiar, but actually makes you apply those teachings to your life.
This is a great church for someone who is still searching or a veteran Christian. You'll find all types of people with all different races in all different walks of life. -

I found A Village Community through the previous Yelp reviews so saw it as only fitting that I share my experience here.
I was looing for a church to attend on a regular basis after a long time away from the church, but so far the ones in my community didn't seem to mesh with me upon attendance. When I walked into these churches I was barely greeted, ignored the entire service by the attendees around me and promptly left after the service . The message was often good, but there was no connection for me. I didn't feel like I related to the patrons and I didn't feel like the patrons really wanted anyone new to come into their fold. It was all very traditional and very hollow to me, and almost felt like a chore to go.
I found A village Community on Yelp and was immediatly intrigued by the reviews. The first Sunday that I attended, I was nervous to walk into a small group of people who all knew each other, but once I came up the stairs it was no sweat. Everyone was genuinely happy to meet me and they were all glad that I was there. It wasn't the sort of 'greet the new comer becuase you have to and then continue talking with the people you know' kind of thing. It was awesome. I immediately felt at home.
Chris, the pastor, is great. He's very personable, a strong leader and you can see that he is filled with the Holy Spirit. This was important to me, because I could see that he really lived and believed everything he was teaching. He has a great way of taking scripture and breaking it down and showing how to apply it to your life in today's world. Every Sunday I walk away greatful that I came.
If you're like me and looking for something different in a church, a little more like a good group of friends and a good discussion, I encourage you to come and join us. -

A Village Community is a Christian church that meets in an art gallery space in the East Village Arts District in downtown Long Beach.
I've been going to A Village Community for nearly six years now, and it's definitely unlike any church I've attended in the past. It is small and tight-knit, and really welcoming. Pastor Chris has a gift in teaching biblical concepts in a modern & relevant way, while not watering anything down or missing the historical context. He will often use current events, local news and stories from his own life to help illustrate biblical teaching in a way that helps me understand how it directly applies to my life.
I first came across A Village Community at one of the second Saturday Art Walks that happen here in the East Village, where they had a booth set up with some interactive art. I loved how they were really embracing the creative lifestyle and using it as a way to reach out to the community, so I decided to try it out. I had been going to much larger churches and was looking for a smaller, more intimate setting. I definitely got that at A Village Community, as there was an immediate opportunity to get plugged in through serving in the many activities the church puts on. I went from being an armchair Christian to being actively engaged; it was a huge shift that has really helped me grow in my faith. From volunteer activities to art shows and general hangout time, there is always something going on with the church.
The church is fairly young and ethnically-diverse. They have a nursery which is good if you've got small kids. Every one is very friendly and takes in interest in each others' lives, but that could turn some people off as this isn't the type of place you can sneak in and sneak out of without having people try to say hi and strike up a conversation. That was challenging for me at first because I tend to be shy, but it was really good for me to come out of my comfort zone and have a fellowship with other believers.
I'd recommend A Village Community to anyone looking for a really unique and unconventional church experience in downtown Long Beach. There is a Sunday Service at 11:00 AM (great for folks like me who struggle getting up early) and Wednesday Bible Study at 7:00 PM. -

Well, where do I start ........!!!! Been attending since summer '05 (when it was still just Wednesday night bookclub & Thursday night 'Interactive Bible Study'). For me, AVC has been a spiritual oasis -- a place to learn and grow in Christ along side a community of others embarked on a similar journey.
