Review from Jim L.
Avenel, NJ
My wife and I went here for an anniversary dinner last week. We had read many excellent reviews of this restaurant ( including a glowing one in the New York times), yet we passed it many times a month but had never tried it, despite the best of intentions. Getting a weekend reservation at short notice isn't easy but we happily settled for a 5.30 on a Friday evening.
It's a welcoming but smallish place and the maitre d' was friendly and efficient in guiding us to a nice table for two by a window. He was extremely helpful in going over the menu with us and in outlining the specials for that evening. Our bottle of wine (it's BYOB) was quickly opened and the first glasses poured. Our waiter was knowledgeable also and answered our questions before taking our orders.
I started with the house pizza and what a joy it was to get a perfectly prepared small pizza with a soft-fried egg on top! This being close to Cinco de Mayo, the chef had added very thinly sliced jalapeno pepper and chorizo sausage to the topping. After a simple but delicious salad, i had the braised ox tongue on ciabatta bread and it brought me back to my youth and the ox tongue dishes my mother used to make for us. Not everybody's favorite food but it completely satisfied my appetite and my childhood reminiscing! Since I've also enjoyed rhubarb since childhood, I indulged in a wonderful rhubarb concoction for dessert. My wife went all-vegetarian with her choices and pronounced herself extremely impressed with the quality, freshness and preparation of the ingredients.
Overall, a well-deserved 5 stars here. Whether you're a locavore or simply enjoy good, fresh local ingredients prepared to perfection by a chef and crew who obviously know what they're doing, this is a must for a special occasion or just to enjoy a nice dinner in relaxed, comfortable surroundings. Although it's not "cheap", the prices are fair and are not exorbitant by any means. Just remember to book well in advance, especially on weekends.
Next time, I'm going to go for one of the delicious-sounding mussel dishes! -
Review from Alison H.
I must say I had very high expectations for this place due to the reservation difficulty. I called a week and a half in advance and was still waitlisted! I mean is this NYC or Cranford NJ? Did they not get the memo about my new Elite status? Wtf? Anyways I called back a few days before my target day to check on my progress. I was in luck someone canceled! Must have been a geezer because we got 5:30 pm....I took it. They also took my CC info to hold the reservation...... Said they would charge me 70 bucks if I didn't show!...Dang I was not sure if that pissed me off or made me want to go more....
My expectations were met I loved it here. Farm to table, Byob, great food. What more can one ask for?
The restaurant is so small. They change the menu with the seasons here since everything depends on the fresh produce. They have a chalk board displaying their local farm network.
We had.....
Kara's Mussel pot.....Amazing could have drank the sauce!
Pulled pork arepa....This was not what I expected but still good...I guess I was expecting a pulled pork sandwich type thing...like a Venezuelan arepa but it was like a pork flavored pancake.
Pizza special....This was the best part of the night, the tomatoes were so fresh and the sunny side egg was to die for!
Scallops ...These were delish as well but I felt perhaps a bit undercooked. Maybe its just me I like to kill everything. Chicken, fish, pasta I always over cook. My dining partner tells me they were prepared correctly.Listed in: My Favorite Places Period!, I'm Fancy Huh?

Union, NJ
I can't believe there is such a high quality restaurant in Union County! First off, make your reservations early (months ahead) if you want to eat at normal dinner time. There is free parking on the street. The restaurant itself is small but cute, with a romantic ambiance.. The service was top notch and friendly. And this is a BYOB.
As for the food, it was fantastic. Especially memorable was "kara's mussel pot" which had mussels soaked in a creamy saffron sauce with little pieces of spicy chorizo (sausage) mixed in it. What a great combination! After you are done, you will want to soak up the broth with your bread until you have to tilt the bowl to get every last drop even though it may not be proper etiquette. (Or is it just me that does that?) Anyway, I cannot wait to come back and try the other mussel pots.
As for the entrees, they were about medium sized, maybe kind of small, but of the highest quality. I had braised short ribs, which were very tasty, tender and juicy, My gf had the catch of the day, which happened to be catfish, and that was moist, flavorful, and not the least bit fishy as it was picked up from the nyc fish market the same morning. I had a fruit cobbler for dessert and my gf had some a toffee apple cake that she loved. (Check out pics for all these dishes)
All in all, it was a very nice evening. It's nice to know that you don't have to go to Manhattan to find a top notch restaurant as there is one sitting right under your nose in little old Cranford.Listed in: Jersey Fresh!

So good!! Still thinking about dinner now. The steak frites were AMAZING!! followed by a perfect dessert ( a chocolate peanut butter trifle). I also appreciated the mini appetizer, bread and mini shortbread cookie they give. I will return again soon!

I went there for the second time last week, and like the first time it was really really good. The mussels were big and firm, very tasty... the croutons on the side were delicious.

3-12-12:
Went back to ATH on Saturday night (well, really late afternoon, since we could get only a 5 pm reservation) for my wife's birthday, and the return visit was as enjoyable as the first. ATH held our reservation, assuring us when I called that as long as we were out by 7:30 they would hold the table; we got there at 5:30 thanks to a local taxi company hosing us). The place was hopping when we got there, but we quickly settled in for a fine meal. All my previous notes stand, especially the fact that the place has nice crystal wineglasses. The couple we went with were first-timers, and they loved the meal as much as we did.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I wanted to eat mussels & frites for dinner but did not want to stay in the city. So I "yelp" and it gave me "A Toute Heure" located on the residential streets of my neighboring town: Cranford. I called and made sure reservations were not required, but to my surprise it was. Good thing I made it cause this place was packed by 7:30pm on a Wednesday!
Food: amazing! as my DH said: "I've steaks, and then I have had good steaks; this one been one of them" now to impress him it must have been amazing. My mussels on a light basil/tomato/ white wine broth were delicious. To top it off dessert was a home baked choc.chip cookie and a cold milk shooter.
Staff: all were great and knowledgeable. My water glass was never empty, but I hardly felt busgirl in or around our table. Even the owners were there that night and they were oh so friendly. Kitchen is ran by an all girls team, (with the exception of the pastry chef) and I tell you, they kick some foodie behind with their food! another great point? is BYOB, but they have the proper white wine or red wine glasses :o)
Over all I'm impressed, and can say we have found our new favorite place in town. Cannot wait to return next week! -

Who knew Cranford, NJ had such a hidden gem!?
Fried crab fritters, mussels, homemade honey butter and fresh baked bread, fresh scallops seared w heirloom tomatoes.
The night was topped off w toffee apple cake w local honeycrisp apples baked into a brown sugar cake w toffee drizzles & scoop of homemade cinnamon ice cream all made by James Beard chef finalist. Oh my, Cranford, what a nice treat! -

Awesome grilled cheese, pot pie, pork and egg sandwich. This was the backdrop for a holiday brunch. As it was snowing, we were the only patrons; service was extremely efficient and friendly!
Upon walking in, one is greeted with a chalkboard noting the originas of locally sourced dairy and produce. In my opinion, New Jersey needs more such establishments. -

Fanwood, NJ
This place has been getting alot of positive hype lately and i have been wanting to eat here for a while. Really wanted to come in for dinner but my first time i settled for lunch. Very nice little place, B.Y.O.B and use locally grown and what i think was organic ingrediants.
Started off with zuchini tempura which was very good, nice light batter and very fresh yellow zuchs. Also had the meatloaf meatballs with gravy. Although the gravy was very good was not in love with the meatball a little dry, would probably skip this dish next time. For lunch had the B L GT bacon lettuce and fried green tomato on sourdough. An awoesome sandwich that i would go back for tomorrow. I didnt like the house made chips that came with it, so i ordered the fries with saffron garlic aioli and these were great. Had some home made ice cream with peanut brittle which was ok but tried my friends creme bruelle and it was ridiculous good. One of the better ones i have ever tried. Overall a very good place with simple good quality ingrediants cant wait to come back for dinner.Listed in: Great places to eat, Jersey Lunch Spots

Have been here many times and every time is amazing. Most recently, my BF and I celebrated our anniversary, and the dishes and service were wonderful. Green eggs and ham, Kara's signature mussels (!), and duck confit over white beans were the perfect dishes for an autumn night. BYOB allowed us to bring a great pinot to accompany the meal. The owners and chef obviously show a lot of care in the food, service and ambiance. Love, love, love this place.

Chatham, NJ
I was throughly impressed with this place. The owner Jim greeted us before we even went inside and he continued to assist us in several menu suggestions. My wife and I tried the cheese plate, 5 appetizers and split an entree as we wanted to sample as much as possible.
I highly recommend the fritters with chimichurri sauce.
We still need to make it back for dessert.
Service was great overall and ambiance was just right.
Make sure you make a reservation in advance on the weekend, it was tough getting in here! -

Rahway, NJ
Great restaurant! Just love this place.
We have never had a bad meal here. The menu changes weekly based on what is seasonal and fresh. All of the ingredients are local/organic and it shows! It's BYOB so be sure to bring a bottle with you if you want a nice glass of wine.
The owner makes a point to go around to each table, introduce himself and tell you all about the menu. And we've always had great service.
The only down side is tha it is a very small space - even in the warmer months when they have outdoor seating available - and now that they accept reservations on http://opentable.com you have to reserve weeks in advance. -
Review from Lulabelle L.
Westfield, NJ
A Toute Heure is my favorite local restaurant. The owners are a husband/wife team, she is the chef, he is the greeter, wine opener, jack of all trades. The food is fresh and delicious; most ingredients are produced or grown locally. I am particularly fond of the goat cheese ice cream (sounds weird, but tastes great - rich and creamy) and the moules frites. They make their French fries the way they do in Belgium and mussels are cooked in a spicy broth. The prices are very reasonable for the quality. It's BYOB with no corkage charge.
The room is simple, wooden tables, big windows, and pale walls. It can get noisy when the place is full, but unlike a lot of NY restaurants, the tables are not on top of one another. The servers are young local people and very professional.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Cranford, NJ
I've been dieing to try this place after seeing all the good reviews. It is highly recommended to make reservations ahead of time (because the place is small). I went here on a late Tuesday night with a friend so didn't really need to make a reservation.
Big key thing to note ... it's small ... it's very small, (did I forgot to mention the place is small?). Besides the point that the place is small, you do get the advantage of BYOB. I like bringing my own booze!
Tuesdays are mussel days. If you love mussels then you have to go here on Tuesday. My friend and I ordered an appetizer and the dinner portions of Kara mussels to share. It was just the right amount. The Kara's mussel is cooked in a saffron creamy broth with chorizo. It was absolutely delicious.
I am so tempted to come here every Tuesday! i want to try all the other flavors of mussels! -

Cranford, NJ
The only negative about this restaurant is how tough it is it to get a reservation. We had to call two months ahead of a table for two. Its a pain but well worth it.
The owner came around and introduced himself, talked to us about their philosophy, was friendly but not at all, in your face.
Food was delicious- we had the onion tart to share, husband had the rabbit for dinner and raved about it. I did the mussels after reading the reviews on here and it did not disappoint. Dessert was a peach crumble with ice cream- perfect sized portions.
Atmosphere is intimate, it feels like you were swept away on the French countryside when you are inside. Service was great, which surprised us but the servers were young, friendly and knowledgeable about farm to table, so kudos to the owners.
This is now our go to special place- if we can get in! -

Westfield, NJ
Love the fact that they use local, fresh ingredients... this is what drew me to this restaurant. We've been here 3 times now.
The food is delicious. Since the menu is based on fresh, in-season ingredients, it is always changing. The one appetizer that really stands out in my mind is the polenta with the sunny side up egg. It would have been perfect if the egg wasn't overcooked... we are definitely going to try to make this at home. It was one of those "why didn't we ever think of this combo?"
This is definitely one of the better restaurants in the area. -

Fanwood, NJ
Exceptional restaurant! My wife and I recently moved to Fanwood from Manhattan and were told that we must try ATH. It surpassed all expectations. Ambiance was warm and intimate, service was friendly and the food was fresh, hot and superb. It's more like a farm-to-table Napa/Sonoma restaurant than a NYC spot. Nothing like this place for miles around!

Review from Chris C.
North Plainfield, NJ
So I'm not exactly sure if this restaurant would survive if it were situated in NYC. But in the suburban middle class foodie wasteland around Cranford/Westfield its a solid addition to the food scene in the area.
I wouldn't say anything is overtly fantastic but they execute simple, seasonal food well enough. I wouldn't put this meal up against Le Bernadin, but then again I can dress in jeans and drive ten minutes for a good meal as opposed to spending 50 bucks alone on parking in Manhattan around midtown.
I understand they say that they source their food seasonally, but it does not explain their food markups enough, except that the place is small, would never be able to survive if they didn't charge such prices, because the lunch crowd for this place doesn't exist. Everything is somewhat justified as it is a BYOB joint. I would much prefer to just order a drink however there's a rather large wine store in the town over that sells a nice Kabinett Riesling or Moscato D'Asti for about $20 that goes well with almost anything. . I know this review doesn't sound like a full blown endorsement of the place but I am glad that it is in existance. -
Review from David V.
Manhattan, NY
Inflated 5 stars for being in a suburb. The food was great, the service is streaky. I've been twice, one waiter is great, the next waiter I had was using slang at a Sunday brunch. Not bad for the pub, not great for a place that's supposed to be a relatively special treat. Maybe I'm nitpicky.
The food is excellently prepared, though they have a pension for incredibly thick slices of bread. The frog legs were delicious the time I went, the butter and bread were good, and the variety of bread was also good.
If you can, go to the brunch, it's the last sunday of every month, and the menu changes monthly, which is a gift and a curse. I wanted to try a lot of items on last months brunch menu that I can only hope will reappear at the end of July.
I don't remember too many specifics of my meal, (it was a while ago), but I walked away incredible full and incredibly happy. It's byob too, which immediately catapults it to bargain, even if the food is expensive for the burbs. -

Cranford, NJ
I love this place for many reasons. They use local ingredients which is always a plus. They change their menu weekly (or monthly) so there is always something new to choose. One of my favorite dishes was the mussels with chorizo. I have also enjoyed a dish of scallops in a salad with peaches. What a great combination. Everything is always so fresh and tasty. I usually like to end my meal with a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie or a small serving of freshly made ice cream. I have tried the burnt caramel and some other ice cream with cinnamon. YUM is all I have to say. This place is small so make a reservation.

Cranford, NJ
By far the best restaurant in town. The owners are a husband who is the manager and greeter and the wife who is the head chef. They are both very friendly and take time to get to know everyone.
The food has never let me down. The prices are higher than average, but so is the taste of the meal. I love the always changing menu and especially the mussels. The selection of cheeses is also a nice touch that never lets me down. It is BYOB so we are always able to bring a nice bottle of wine and they are happy to uncork it for free.
It is nice to see a restaurant use locally grown products in their foods. A Toute Heure's menu always shows which local farms and stores are being used in the making of the food for that night.
The restaurant is relatively small and there are no reservations, but I generally like to eat on the earlier or the later side so I have never had to wait. There is a nice outdoor seating area that I like to use in the summer.
I am now a regular there and the owners are always glad to see us and sit and chat for a bit. I recommend A Toute Heure to everyone for a nice Friday or Saturday night meal. -

Cranford, NJ
I've been here a few times now for dinner and lunch as we're lucky enough to live only a few blocks away. I love the fact that they stress local ingredients and suppliers - everything tastes better when you actually know where it came from!
The last time we went we started with the cauliflower fritters and a cheese. The fritters were good though the portion was smaller than we were expecting. The cheese was very good and it came with fresh honeycomb. Delicious!
For entrees I got the fish of the day, orange roughy, which was served over risotto and brussel sprouts. Kudos to them for making me actually like brussel sprouts. The fish was perfectly cooked as well. My husband had the pork, which he enjoyed.
We split an apple cake with cinnamon ice cream for dessert. It was the perfect end to the meal as it wasn't too heavy and had just the right amount of sweetness. Overall a great meal and I'm looking forward to returning soon. -

Cranford, NJ
I live close by and was very pleased to see it open back in 2007, since there are very few food options in the immediate area. I also appreciate their use of locally sourced produce, meats & seafood. It is a small space, stay away on Fri. & Sat. nights if you don't like crowds. Earlier, before 6PM or after 8pm is less hectic. Most everything I have eaten here is absolutely delicious, with quality, preparation & presentation being the key hallmarks of ATH. The downside is how pricy it is, but I believe it is well worth it every now and then as a place to get together with friends and enjoy some really wonderful food. The brunch was okay, but nothing spectacular. Lunch & Dinner are a far better value. Also wish they offered some vegan options as well, but Cranford is lucky to have this gem in it's midst.

A Toute Here is a foodie and locovores dream come true and in my mind one the best restaurants i've ever ate at. Each mouthwatering item on the menu consists of local and regional cheeses, breads, veggies, fish, game, and poultry in simple but unique recipes. From the saffron mussels to steak and fries all the meals I have had here were on point and had my taste buds pleased. Its Small but cozy, the staff is friendly and the ultra personable owners remembered us. Its also a BYOB so bring a few bottles of vino. The prices are $15-30 for entrees, we spent about $80 for 2 people including apps, and desert. Well worth it.

Manhattan, NY
We tried this restaurant due to the rave reviews. Yes we eat in the city alot so I thought I had stumbled on a great place near my fiances house. Not really. Its just OK. The service is great, the restaurant very small and in a residential area which is a bit odd. Why not locate in Westfield in a nice space? Plenty of diners there, and no real competition as Westfield only seems to allow Italian restaurants. Regardless, the steak frite was lackluster, no real beef flavor as its probably choice and not prime meat. Fiance had the red snapper, quite dry. The appetizer stated "grilled" squid with shrimp...all came fried with two small, maybe rock shrimp and three pieces of frisee greens .....and for $14 you would expect better. The french fries (frites) with my steak were almost burnt.....I have eaten french fries in Luxembourg, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris....theirs are billed as frites one would find in Belgium.....believe me they were not. Too tired to send them back and disrupt the dinner. Actually the best steak au poivre and frites are in the city at Balthazar, best oysters and fish at Aquagrill.......I suggest the owners and chef make a visit and readjust a bit.
Note to the chef: Soak the potatos overnight, drain, dry , cut.....blanch in oil first then fry at higher temp..........the ones I had obviously were not soaked to leach out excess starch and were probably dipped in oil maybe three times.....too dark and tasteless......sorry. -

Berkeley Heights, NJ
Found this restaurant after reading great reviews here on Yelp and it did not disappoint. We got a bit lost and arrived late on a Saturday night--the owner could not have been nicer and more welcoming, and this attitude carried through for each and every person who came to our table to serve.
The food was absolutely delicious--all from local purveyors, which made it even nicer. We shared a grilled radicchio salad with goat cheese that was lovely, and I had a Halibut special--fresh from the Fulton Fish Market--that was awesome. The peach, nectarine and apricot cobbler was a lovely send-off to the summer, and the French-press coffee was
As always, we love the NJ BYOB factor that allowed us to enjoy a great bottle of wine from our own collection.
We will definitely be returning and recommending to friends. -

Unbelievable how good this place is. Refreshing. Beautiful decor...I feel like I'm on vacation each time I dine there.
Freshest stuff around...local...sustainable...green. Menu is always changing and they do a great job updating the website. Amazingly delicious and inspiring. Makes me and my husband feel good to be alive. I dance in my chair when I eat and I don't care who's looking! Great service, the sweetest owners. My husband and I fell in love with it when we went when it opened and we've stayed in love. It's fun, romantic...I get a heady feeling each time we go and I get sad each time we leave. Never disappoints. They now take reservations...
Try the french fries with aioli...heaven. I usually order their scallop dish, or chicken, or steak frites...or mussel pot. Kara and Andrea are both genius in the kitchen. the only thing I wouldn't order is the flatbread...it's tasty...but as a dinner it just doesn't do it for me. Homemade ice cream is divine. Coolest place in NJ (in my humble opinion). -

I just love eating at this restaurant. It's good for an intimate dinner or a group affair. The only bad thing is you better have a reservation. A good way to try the place is lunch beacause it's less crowded. Menu is seasonal and changes all the times.

Review from Kelly K.
A Toute Heure is a very small restaurant in what appears to be an old house. Service is very friendly. The food is very good, however, for brunch it almost everything came with eggs. The menu could be alittle more adventurous an offer less eggs. Tried the beignets...pricey three for 10 dollars...tasty though with bacon and blue cheese mixed in the batter before frying and served with a tasty mustard. Tried their burger with fries...of course it had an egg on top! It was tasty, however note the meat has something mixed in for flavor...including what looked like pieces of onions. The fries were good but had a little too much sea salt already on them....they should go lighter on the salt...and let you add more from the sea salt set on the table if you choose to. The coffee is expensive at 5 dollars for drip...it has unlimited refills. Prices were alittle on the high side for the location. Would go back if in the area again to try a meal other than brunch.
