Pretty much everything I ordered was good which included the mac and cheese, ribs and corn bread. My brother had the sweet potatoes and they were so good and I'm usually not even a fan of sweet potatoes! The collard greens are also really good, a bit salty so skip the salt.

I love good food. I'm working on a temporary assignment in Sylmar for the last month and I've taken to eating at national chain restaurants because the food in the area is marginal. I wanted BBQ today and was set for a Bear Pit run when this place came up in Yelp. I showed up with 6 of my co-workers at about 1:00 pm. The place was empty.
We ordered a big cross section of the menu, including several orders of fried chicken. I ordered brisket, two pork ribs, collard greens, and black-eyed peas. I like to taste the meat without sauce, so I ordered it on the side. I found the sauce too sweet for my taste, but my friends were lapping it up like dogs. The meat was perfect. I enjoyed the brisket and could have ordered a second helping The ribs are top notch. The sides were outstanding. I think the collard greens were the best I've ever had.
My co-works enjoyed their meal. They were all stuffed and contented. Most needed a nap. I understand the fried chicken was superb.
A taste of soul suffers from being the only soul food restaurant in a taco town. I honestly don't understand why there is not a line out the door.
I've got it marked as a lunch only spot. The neighborhood looks rough and with all the bars in on the window, I'm thinking it might be a high crime spot.
I'll be back and I'll bring my foodie friends. This place is work it.
Thanks Tammy Chambers - owner and damn good chef. -

I finally find a place here in the valley that has a complete menu of soul food dishes. It's a small restaurant, but it's tidy and quiet. The worker who checked me out for my take order was very friendly. It's worth the drive if you live in south or west of the valley. I ordered the yams, mac & cheese, and greens which was very tasty. The greens was exactly the way I like them. I ordered the Turkey wings and gravy which was delicious which I thought It would have help if it was little more tender, but I will definitely order it again. I don't understand why some of the low ratings on this place. I can't wait to order other dishes on the menu.

THE FOOD
Brisket sandwich - drownding in bbq sauce
Beef ribs - also lost in sauce
Short ribs - the only yum
YYYIIIPPPEEE
portion sizes and price are good for BBQ - BUT
BBBOOOO
BBQ sauce - OMG people control yourselves. BBQ sauce is meant to accent not to hide. Who know's how your food is but i know that your bbq sauce is nothing special, sorry, but it taste like it came straight from a plastic bottle.
and, come on you ran out of fries on a sunday night. ridiculous
also, area a little scary, think BOW "bars on windows"
SERVICE - friendly
SUMMARY - will not be back.
Sad because i realy want to support small businesses but nothing was memorable.
HINT: if you want BBQ in this area, the only place i've found worth return visits is "Big Pop's" in pacoima. Dont waste your time on "Bear Pit" or "Hogly Wogly" even though they have alot of yelps i wasn't impressed.
Big Pop's is pick up only! Call it in & take it home. -

The food here was not very good! There was only one employee in the restaurant and she was the cook, the waitress, and the cashier. Really you're holding the dirty money and cooking the food that doesn't taste good. No Thank You! I do not recommend this place.

One day out of the blue I had a mad craving for peach cobbler so I Yelped it and this little gem came up. Not to seem crazy ordering 4 peach cobblers, I decided to try their food. I ordered the bbq brisket to go. The beef was so tender, juicy and so flavorful. I ordered a side of rice with gravy which was very tasty, not salty like other places and yams. The yams were sugary sweet with some nutmeg/cinnamon.
My 2nd visit, I tried the beef ribs. Wow, flavorful from first bite to the bone!
Ok, so when you go.... you've got to try
*the bbq brisket
*the beef ribs
*peach cobbler (which was damn GOOD by the way)
*lemon aide (fresh squeezed) -

Tried this place for the first time and sad to say we won't be going back.
It's no wonder the wait for takeout was 30 min. since the the waiter, cashier, and cook was the same person. There was only one other couple there the entire time we waited.
Food wasn't anything to die for, just ok.
Not sure how fresh it was since I kept hearing the microwave beep. -

What a great find ! We thought we were going to The Smoke Pit, and were initially disappointed when we arrived to find that the place had changed owners. However, the change is quite an improvement !
The new owner, Tammy, is a VERY talented cook, especially when it comes to soul food. She's also remodeled the restaurant (it used to be kinda rundown) and it's now very inviting for dine-in. They've also received an "A" rating from LA Co., which I'm always happy to see.
We did dine-in for our first visit and take-out for our second visit (the following Saturday night). Both equally good - HUGE portions both times, too.
On my first visit I got the smothered pork chops dinner (2 marinated chops w/seasoned rice), which comes with 2 sides and 2 cornbread muffins. I got the green beans and the cornbread stuffing - both were excellent, especially the green beans.
My partner in food crime (aka my hubby) is a BBQ fiend, so he got the combo plate, which had hot links, beef rib, pork rib and chicken. His faves were the hot links, the pork rib (sparerib) and the chicken. His sides were BBQ beans and potato salad - both excellent altho the potato salad had a lot of green bell pepper (we both hate the gbp, but that's just us).
High marks for all food items and everything we ordered was homemade including the sweet tea. And we finished off with the peach cobbler - mmmm, good.
The 2nd visit was take-out and I brought a friend with me, to get her reaction. She loved it too and ordered the following : brisket dinner, hot links dinner and short ribs dinner - sides were coleslaw, potato salad, green beans, mac & cheese.
I ordered the smothered pork chops again (too good to pass up and I was still licking my lips from the last time) and got the green beans (yes, again) and coleslaw. My partner in food crime had the hot links dinner with red bean & rice and green beans. We're pretty hung up on the green beans - superb.
Highly recommend A Taste of Soul - and next time I'm getting the fried chicken. -

I received a gift certificate to try this place. Unfortunately, the gift certificate included an 18% gratuity which was included at the time of ordering. Not a good idea since the food was good but the service was lacking. I'm not doing that again. I had the oxtail, rice and beans, collard greens, yams, and cornbread with a lemonade. I loved the food but not the lemonade. My husband had the red snapper dinner with mac and cheese and a soda. He finished the whole thing. The restaurant was cleaned.

I love this place! They are very nice here..they even give you the remote to the flat screen mounted on the wall so you can watch while you dine. I know, it is a very homey environment with good homestyle food...Pork ribs are awesome and love the red beans and rice...also, if you come for lunch the menu is considerably cheaper...

I had the hot links with mac & cheese and greens. Everything was very good. My husband bought some ribs. Both the hot links and the ribs were very tender and the sauce was very good. We also liked the peach cobbler. We'll go back!

My boyfriend and I went to a Taste of Soul after we spotted it driving home. We tried the BBQ Combo platter which consists of 2 BBQ pork ribs 2 beef ribs, 1 hotlink and 1 piece of chicken. We also tried the fried chicken combo. The Fried Chicken was so yummy. I Loved the collard greens, Mac & cheese, and the potato salad was good too. I was not a fan of the BBQ Beans. I also tried the Peach Cobbler which was great. Next time I'm going to try the short rib dinner. Yum!
