Great selection of premium yarn with just the right amount of help, not pushy at all and many wonderful sales .... what not to love. There is even parking near bye and a great restaurant across the street.

I reallly want to give this place a better review. It is beautiful, they have such a great selection, but I was really disappointed in the lack of customer service. I went into the store having never touched yarn, needles, knitting, say what? (I though "purl" was spelled "pearl.")
I walked up to the otherwise quiet front desk and said as much and asked for some assistance picking needles and yarn. I was surprised that the store clerk didn't get out of her seat, but instead, looking up from her iPhone, gave me a few quick tips and directed me to the "back wall."
Truthfully, it ended up being fine, but I really wish that she had helped me out a little more. As I was checking out, she was lovely and very kind. I will try to go back for a class or something, but my initial impression was less than wonderful. -

I really really really wanted to love this place. I kept going back thinking that my bad experience there was a one-off, but each successive time I would received the same poor treatment from the staff. When I moved to Hyattsville a few months ago, I was beyond excited that there was a local yarn shop within walking distance of my house--I love yarn and I love supporting local businesses. Each time I have walked into the store, I received no acknowledgment from the person at the counter (which is literally a foot away from the front door). Note: the store was not busy any of these times. I take my time looking at everything in the store, and a few times I was in there for over an hour, and not once did anyone say hi, ask if I needed help, etc. Kind of weird. Every trip there I have purchased yarn, and each time I had to wait around for someone to ring me up.
The last time I went, it was so bad it was comical. I walked in and the woman at the counter looked me straight in the eye. I smiled and said hi, and she just looked back at her smart phone or whatever without so much as a smile or a nod. Are you serious, lady? There was even one point while I was browsing that she accidentally bumped into me, and didn't apologize or even acknowledge "hey, I just rammed into someone." After about 45 minutes of browsing, I finally selected the yarn for purchase, and I waited patiently at the counter while the lady was chatting it up with someone in the store. After about 5 minutes of waiting, I just laughed, put my yarn down, and walked out.
Besides the customer service, I found the yarn selection to be pretty "meh" (also, the lighting in the store is not great, so when you buy something, you might be surprised with the color when you get it home). The selection isn't terrible, but I guess just catering to a different type of knitter/crocheter than I am. Not as much higher end yarn as I would have liked. I think I have been spoiled living in Boston, which I'm realizing has an abundance of really fabulous yarn stores. Although, maybe it is better that A Tangled Skein has kind of a crap selection of sock yarn so that I won't be tempted to spend all of my money (I am a sock yarn junkie).
In terms of how knowledgeable the staff is, I have no idea (since no one talks to me while I'm in there!). I did notice on their website that if you need help with a project, it must be a project with yarn bought from their store or they will charge you for the help. I find this to be an incredibly weird policy, and have never encountered this at any yarn shop that I've been at. It wouldn't be as much of an issue except I am never able to find yarn there that I would want for my larger/more complicated projects.
So, if you don't mind getting the "sixth sense" treatment from some cranky older ladies and are looking for some Cascade 220 or other scratchy yarn for a sweater, then this could be the yarn store for you.Comment from Lawrence P. of A Tangled Skein 11/21/2011

Lovely yarn store filled with fun & friendly people. Visited during their evening hours Friday 13th sale and enjoyed my various conversations with staff and customers (plus bought yarn and fiber).
Store has a great mix of product, very comfortable for shopping, plus lots of places to sit and knit. -

Fiber porn! A deliciously sensual place to browse for yarns and more. It's not a church-lady yarn store -- they have a lot of unusual fiber blends and upmarket knit/crochet books of the Vogue variety. The shop itself is homey, with the staff and customers appearing to be more like family (or fellow addicts!) but the selection is classy and tasteful. Also, they have frequent-buyer discount cards.
I took my first knitting class at Tangled Skein and hope to take another series in the future, in part because I'm inspired by all of the beautiful things I see when I visit the store. Maybe someday I'll be able to make something beautiful! (See also: Looped in Dupont Circle). -

extremely friendly and an incredible selection of yarn. Might be my new favorite yarn store in the DC area, though I still need to check out Looped in Dupont

This is what a local yarn store should be.
The walls are covered in fiber. So much to choose from - favorites like Malabrigo and Noro, lots of natural fibers, and more sock yarn than you can shake a stick at. Couches and armchairs abound. Good selection of affordable needles and notions. A beautiful rack of hand-painted yarns for those of us who can't get enough yarn porn. Did I mention spinning tools? Helpful and friendly shopkeepers who let you search on your own, but happily strike up conversation. Sit and Stitch hours twice weekly. And classes that run the gamut.
You'll get yarn, supplies, books... and a sense of community here. That's what keeps me coming back. -

I truly like the shop. The owner has a staff of nice, helpful experienced knitters. Nice selection of accessories and yarn. Great sitting areas - they seem to encourage visits throughout the week to ask questions or just knit for a while.

A warm and friendly shop with a great mix of yarns. The staff is helpful, but never pushy. Se sure to check out knit groups, spin groups, classes, and the frequent shopper club.
