was drivin' back from Santa Rosa after a long day at work with my co-worker. as we were driving on 2nd street we were stopped at the 2nd & A St intersection. then he pointed and said, "Dave, you see that 'Uh Street Cafe'?" and I said....you mean "AY STREET CAFE??" and he stuttered...."Yeah, well it's really really good! It's French".....

now, i've never eatin' at a French restaurant before, but after working 10 hours on red bull and no meal, needless to say....i was heading there after i picked up my car at his house!!!

called my girl, picked her up...and headed straight there! parked on the street. and walked right in. it's a little hole in the wall that's easy to miss. i thought it was on the 2nd floor since there's a sign that's hella far up on the 2nd floor.

started with the garlic prawns.....got 'em and said....5 prawns?! but they looked so damn good. and i was right!! the sauce was on point! i enjoyed every bite of those prawns.

ordered the chicken and my girl got the pork chop. both excelllent choices! food was great. service was good and overall a nice dinner for a decent price.

I found the food overrated, the seats drafty, and the service questionable at best.

New ownership, and for the first time ever our party experienced severe stomach upset after dining here.  Very disappointing, as this has been a long-time favorite of ours for years.
I'll give it another try in about three months to see if they've fixed the problems.

I feel as if I have found a secret , the food was in a word out of this world !...it was so good , best meal I have had in years..I took time to find out that they are newly owned and operated which makes some of the previous posts clear....the chef/owner ;  a french/brazilian guy was right there cooking our lunch and it smelled so good..so fresh and you can tell they take pride in each and every meal....really impressed... and more impressed with my date that took me to such a  wonderful spot.  this is kind of a french bistro style presentation with old furniture and in a bad neighborhood....but Honestly this is the kind of place you go to and feel like , wow I just found a little nice find.

I love the dessert here. I had a chocolate lava cake. The port was gummy too!

I would bring my dates to A Street Cafe before school dances.  I'd order us weird items from the menu that I'd heard about in movies and try not to make a face when I ate them.  I'd also try not to wince as I spent two weeks wages on the meal when the check arrived, "Don't worry about it, I'll get it," I'd say and send my card away as she'd look at me in disbelief.
"Wasn't it a lot?," she'd ask and I'd explain that I had a job; no big deal.
Later in the night when I'd drop her off at her parent's house, sometimes, I'd get a kiss.  Sometimes a few.  Usually none.
Money well spent.

I had a pretty nice evening here a few weeks back. Truly I think the food is good, but a little pricey for what it is, portion-wise. For example, I had a seafood pasta that was good but a little too mellow for me (could of used either a little more cheese and fresh herbs to boost its flavor or a little less creaminess), especially because the ratio of pasta to seafood was a little disappointing  (in an attempt to prepare myself for a night of heavy drinking, I chose the pasta, not something I would normally have ordered, and I should have been smarter!). The bread served with dinner was amazing however, and the other diners in my group ordered better than I: a delicious steak cooked perfectly to order, and a salmon dish that had me kicking myself for not ordering it. My pre-dinner crab cakes were great, topped over a bed of garnishing greens and a tangy sauce to match. Service was on par for the pricing though, which sort of justifies it I suppose. I would go back, but order for my palate and not for my social activities. I am going to give three stars because truly everyone I ate with had a great experience, I was the one who ordered a lame entree and the other dishes I tried were good. Go Hayward.

This is a completely unassuming french restaurant in the quiet little commercial center of Hayward.  Consider it's next to a reptile pet store, you can easily miss it.

I've never had problems getting a table here.  The place is pretty much mostly deserted everytime I've come here.  And I've been here about 2-3 times... one reason being Le Papillon in Fremont was full.

The items here are really hit and miss.  I've never had problems ordering the duck in red wine sauce, and their mussels dish was pretty good.  They didn't overcook it, and the sauce was yummy enough that we ate all of our bread.

I suppose I'd have to take stars off because the food took forever to come despite the fact the restaurant is almost always empty.    And the price was a little pricy for the food - but I guess I can always rely on being able to get a table.

I recommend their steak.  I don't know what they put in it or how they cook it, but it's really good and is always prepared as ordered.  The service is courteous and friendly but don't expect them to chit-chat with you.  It's all business when it comes to their service.  The place doesn't look like much on the outside.  I originally mistook this place as simply a coffee shop as I've only driven by with only a quick glance.  The pink overhang on the entrance is what makes this place stand out from the other shops it neighbors.

Let's start with the outside which looks more like a French brothel than a fine dining restaurant... at least the way I picture a French brothel with a worn-down pink awning and pink curtains and too much lace.
It was a little surreal that we walked in at 7 on a Saturday and there was nobody there, but I hoped it was a hidden gem, a well-kept secret I was going to be the first to tell everyone about...no such luck.
My husband's prawns were, in his words, "nasty." Our food (steak and lamb) was decent, definitely not worth $25 each!
We must be gluttons for punishment because we ordered dessert after all that. My chocolate mousse was nothing special, I've made better. It had a raspberry sauce on it that tasted like body odor. My husband thought perhaps I had drunk too much of the cheapest-bottle-of-wine-on-the-menu that we ordered but he tasted it and said "eww, you're right."
The bill was $115 and even with a $60 gift certificate (which is why we were there) I was pissed we spent so much.
Honestly I debated between 2 and 3 stars then realized it was only because everyone was so nice and it is the kind of place you want to succeed. Plus, we did have a very fun time giggling over how bad it was as we got tipsy off of cheap wine. But, until they do something about the mediocre food that costs an arm and a leg and the dessert that tastes like the underside of an arm and a leg, we won't be returning.

The A Street Cafe is Hayward's best by far! We've eaten there for over 10 years and have enjoyed every single meal. We eat out quite a bit and opt for the A Street for special occasions or just because we're hungry! It's one of those good from soup to nuts kind of places which we think are a bit hard to find. The prawns with pasta is wonderful as is the lamb but do try it all! They offer a small menu of classic dishes prepared darn near flawlessly. We've tried most everything and have always left more than satisfied. Two things you should not miss are the soup of the day, whatever it may be, or the Peach Melba as it is just plain scrumptious!
