Russo's is amazing. Super cheap prices, huge selection, and friendly, helpful staff.
Seriously worth the trip, and you can fill in anything they don't have (anything other than the "outside of the store" items -- e.g. household products and processed stuff) at Stop and Shop just down the street.
My only quibbles there are about the other shoppers -- it can be quite maddening to park and navigate the aisles as people randomly stop in front of you. The store isn't exactly spacious, but such great deals. Who cares? -

The good: fun produce, and lots of it. A stellar variety of unusual Asian greens and prices that make you forget all about things like "carbon foot-print" and "sustainability". Good bread and cheese. An epic assortment of flowers. $8.99 for a 6 stem bunch of peonies. Seriously. It's no joke. I nearly came home with the lot of them because they are my very favorite.
The bad: Crowded. Very little in the way of "pantry goods" or organic foodstuffs. Kind of far away from my Somerville abode.
Still...it's nice, and the perfect place for dinner party provisions. -

Absolutely love this place!
Their produce is the freshest around, and definitely less expensive than most places. Can't beat the fresh pasta either... gotta try those raviolis, yall! Delishhh.
Their flower section is also amazing.
The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is the crowd... can't help that though- they're well worth it! -
Review from Fern H.
I've always thought that groceries in the US were much more expensive than in Canada but I have been assured by a recent Toronto transplant in Boston that Russo's is very reasonable.
We arrived early on a Saturday morning and the store was already jammed. Russo's has a nice fruit and veggie selection and an amazing selection of fresh flowers, at decent prices.
We grabbed a few groceries - a few apples, bananas, 2 yogurts, milk, loaf of bread, cookies and some fresh cinammon buns - all for roughly $30. Slightly pricey in my books but not outrageous.
If I lived in the US, I'd spend my money on cheap nice clothes and be starving because groceries are too expensive. And yes, I'd probably be an alcoholic too because booze is sooo cheap.Listed in: Boston Redux

I sue to go to this place two time a week but the last year now I find that the produce is not as fresh two bad experiences so far and today I bought a winter melons took it home and it was all rotten what a waste
I am not the only one complaining people at my place of work also complain because I told them about Russo originally
It's a shame that a good place can go bad but it had to do with the help that he hires they are sometimes rude and will not move with the carts if they see you walking by
today was money wasted -

This is a great find! My friends have been recommending Russo and Sons to me for over two years and I finally listened. I am only kicking myself for not having checked them out sooner!
Not only do they have a wide selection of fresh produce with great prices, but they have different levels of ripeness available as well so if you are looking for something to eat right now, or in a week they have you covered!
They have a good number of indoor and outdoor plants and herbs for your garden for sale as well as fresh cut flowers that looked great!
I was shocked by the amount of food I bought and how low the price was. This is my new store for produce! -
Review from David M.
Imagine a produce section the size of a grocery store where not only is everything fresh, but most selections have a range of ripeness (do you want that Mango tomorrow or in 3 days?) - well welcome to A. Russo and Sons.
The selection really is staggering, and the prices are reasonable (98 cents for an avocado). And, after tiring of the fruits and vegies (and roots and mushrooms) there's a cool selection of cheeses, a great sandwich shop (where the special is actually on sale) and not to mention breads and oils. -

SHAME ON YOU RUSSO'S FOR MISTREATING CUSTOMERS! The fact that you offer lower prices does not excuse you from treating customers and employees with decency. We are respectful and appreciative consumers. TWICE in less than a week one of your managers was downright rude, angry and aggressive with us as we tried to figure out products in your garden department. Not one shred of courtesy or interest in being a decent merchant. I also watched an employee be mistreated. At some point I hope you get competition and a wake up call to treat people with some decency.

Just started shopping here when I can, and, wow. This is heaven for veggie-obsessed people like me. The selection is amazing and the quality and price are fantastic. I wish they had more organic options, is the only thing.
It gets crowded, so shop at off hours if you can. I was there the Saturday before the Super Bowl and had to abandon my cart and run screaming from the store (okay, not *really* screaming, I do have some decorum) because you literally couldn't move.
If it were more convenient I'd make it my main shopping place. -

Russo's is an unusual mixture of green grocer, delicatessen, prepared food specialist, bakery, florist and garden center and somehow it all works. The veggies and fruit are almost always first rate and just flat out cheap. You want pea tendrils, they got'em. Nappa Cabbage no sweat. 3 types of Bok Choy, over here Miss. You get the point.
Excellent rotisserie chickens. Probably the best in Boston. They use Bell & Even chicken and you can taste the difference. They cost more than other places with the exception of Whole Foods, and they are worth it. Excellent pickle and olive section. They have P.O.E. products which are out of NYC (obligatory Yankees Suck) who make pickles almost as good as Grillo's and are half the price.
They also carry foods from local producers. Grillo's Pickles, Mozzerella House bocconcini. I mean how many places with over 340 reviews carry a 4.5 star rating?
Go there and see what the reviewers are raving about. -

I think I moved back to Newton to be closer to Russo's. I was living in the city near a Whole Foods spending $75 on a bag of groceries. I nearly cried when I got back to the area and left Russo's with 3 bags of salad veggies, fruits and even a few baked goods for $40!
One minor complaint: Checkout staff will often carry on full conversations with other staff without saying hello to the person waiting to run their debit card. Small price to pay. -

It would be nice to have a Russo's close to my house for those times when I need something just a little more upscale than Market Basket has to offer.
They did have a lovely (and pricey) selection of fruits and veggies. Far more than I would ever find at MB. From what Barbara tells me it wasn't crowded (really?). We were still dodging and weaving between people and carts.
I was dazzled by their cheese selection. There were just too many to pick from. So I went with a smoked cheddar because it's so good and I can't find it back home.
Going through the bakery department I wanted to grab up all the beautiful looking breads. But I controlled myself.
Now I can see why people go on and on about Russo's. -

Trader Joes? Whole Foods? Nah, forget about those two! Russo's has a great range of exotic veggies, various types of cheeses, and mouth watering pastries!
Have you ever watched Rachael Ray's show called '30 Minute Meals' or Ina Garten's show called 'Barefoot Contessa' or Giada de Laurentiis' show 'Everyday Italian'? They go shopping and buy some not-so-wellknown vegetable, they smell it and give you a whole lesson about the origin, and history of it? Yeah, i feel like this grocery store is where all three of them would shop at. HAHA!!
Very organized, and clean. Everything is divided into sections. They have piano music playing, makes me feel like i cant be here with sweatpants, and a sweatshirt on.
Yes, it is crowded most of the time, but thats because everyone there knows where to shop for groceries -(Russo's)
It would have been 5 stars if they only had more variety on their ice cream. -

I am like a kid in a candy store every time I go to Russos. I'm also like the frog in frogger... Place can be (is generally) packed, but then again, I usually am only able to go on weekends. The produce is consistently fresh and varied and they have a big color picture book at the front of the store with descriptions of all the fruits and veggies, their origin, and how to prepare them.
The fresh pasta (ravioli in particular) is really good and the bakery is outstanding. My favorite is the raspberry and white chocolate bread pudding. I've been known to go all the way to Russos just for that!
I haven't bought any plants or flowers from Russos yet, but they always look so healthy and pretty, perhaps next spring....
Definite gem and worth the trip! -

The very first time I went to Russo's was in 2009. I immediately fell in love with the place. The fresh veggies and the farmers market feel made me so happy. I was hooked to their salad bar and bakery for a long time but my visits were not very frequent since I didn't own a car and had to rely on friends to take me there.
Since becoming more mobile in the past few months, I now drive to Russo's for all my produce needs. As some yelpers have said, forget trader joes and whole foods. Russo's is super fantastic. Yes its always crowded and yes, parking is a pain sometimes...but it's totally worth the hassle. I love that they carry exotic veggies like Indian eggplant and Thai ginger (it sucks that trader joes has very limited fresh veggies). There are days when I dream about their 7 grain bread and peach and mango spreadable fruit. SO GOOD!
They have an outdoor section for items like potatoes and onions which makes sense. Even though the store is always crowded the lines at checkout move really quick. Weekdays between 1-4 are not as crowded so you can enjoy your shopping experience more. -

This place is amazing. I travel 15 miles every weekend just to come here! I used to live closer and fell in love with Russo's.
They have the freshest produce. Everything you can think of! A lot of asian produce you can't find in a normal grocery store. An incredible bakery with extremely good cakes which aren't overly sweet and bread. The freshly made foccacia is to die for, covered in tomatoes and olives. They have a great cheese and deli section. They even make sandwiches/subs which are awesome!
Russo's also has freshly made pasta delivered to them. If you want lobster ravioli make sure to call ahead and order them! I think it's Friday's that they get them in.
They also have a great selection of flowers and plants. I used to work in a high-end flower shop. We would sell the same long stemmed roses for $8 each. I believe they sell them for $2 each.
The best part is you can leave with a cart-full of groceries and not have to break the bank.
Warning though, this place is ALWAYYYYS CROWDED! Especially on weekends. But it's worth it! -
Review from Ari P.
Bellerose, NY
Heath Bar Cookies, with other baked goods as far as the eye can see, and cheeses from all over the world come together in one small alcove to make life outside of Boston a little easier to stomach. (Pun intended)
With a place like Russo's in business, I can't imagine why anyone from around here would go to Whole Foods. I have no idea how they keep their prices so competitive, with the negative being that this place is ALWAYS crowded.. The lines move quickly, but the aisle wars (which are composed of narrow alcoves of deliciousness) can be a little intense.
Kudos to them for training their staff to be polite and knowledgeable, and coming from me that says a lot about them. -

If I can give this place a "6" star, I will! I love Whole Food, but I love Russo's even more. Although it is a bit far for me to travel, I always tried to find time to shop here! I have always found FRESH veges, fruits, and deli here! Never a disappointment!!

Review from Doris W.
I heart Russo's. When I lived with my parents, I drove by it twice a day to and from work. Until I heard a few colleagues talk about how much they loved it, I decided to drop by and I haven't stopped since. Even though I live north of Boston now, I still go there to get my produce. It just takes a little longer to get home. Definitely worth it.
It's located across the street from a condo complex that I had thought about buying just because it was across the street! Ha! There's plenty of parking, though I've never had any problems parking since I go after work. I can't vouch for how parking is during the weekends which I hear is a mad house. The only con I can think of are their hours. They close at 7pm on weeknights and 6pm on weekends. You have to plan accordingly.
They have a great selection of produce. You can pretty much find everything you need there, even Asian veggies. The quality, selection, and prices are much better than your local supermarket and even Whole Foods. One thing to note is that it's not an entirely organic market. If you want organic, go to Whole Foods. They also have freshly made pastas, cheeses, a grill, deli, and bakery. It would be even more amazing if they had a butcher and seafood. The bakery is good as well as the grill. Their roasted chicken is very good. I would actually pass on their "famous" chicken parm. I was very disappointed in that the bread was not toasted so the cheese barely melted. The chicken itself could have been better as well. A little tough since they used cutlets.
I would highly recommend a visit at least once. Beware, you may become hooked. -

I've become a produce snob because of Russo's. CLEAN, FRESH produce at low prices. Almost everything is loose which is perfect for me. I've yet to encounter any flies which is a nice change since I used to shop at one of the bigger supermarket chains that always had flies living near the onions. I also found some great local raw honey here. They've got some hard to find breads and fancy cheeses too.
It does get really insane on the weekends. Heck, even at noon on a random weekday it's pretty busy! But weekends are really nuts. People are pleasant enough but navigating the produce aisles can be tricky when the place is packed. -

Woah crowded.
Went here during lunch because some co-workers raved about the deli sandwiches I ended up getting some pumpkin bread and a biscotti. Both were delicious. But honestly this place is surprisingly crowded. I felt like I was in a little speciality market in New York. At least there you expect it to be pricey and crowded.
Though they have really nice prepared food and fresh produce, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. However, it is nice to know it is there! -

The one thing I hate about Russo's is that everyone else loves it and it's always packed, people push shopping carts into each other, walk into each other, can be mean to each other, but I've been there a few times when it was empty and it was heaven.
I buy my weekly supply of fruits, vegetables, bread, fresh pasta and deli at Russo's. I love the variety of produce and that I can buy everything here: my Chinese stir fry ingredients and well as Amaretti cookies and lady fingers for my Italian desserts, eggplants, green beans and lemons for my Persian meals, Christmas trees for Christmas and plants for my garden.
The deli department needs to learn how to bake the turkey and not dry it out.
Everything is fresh, the prices are great and the best thing about Russo's is that it's not too far from my home. -
Review from Chris C.
I have to first say that I used to live and work within walking distance of this place years ago and was a regular. Then I moved away and never went here. Now I make regular trips here because of the quality and variety of what it is available. Its like a giant indoor farmers market crossed with a specialty foods store crossed with a garden center. I've never really bought anything from the garden center so I don't know how good it is, but everything always looks beautiful when I walk by them.
Produce is king here. They always have all the things you could get in a regular grocery store or a Whole Foods. Then mix in every seasonal item you could think of. Then mix in things that you might never have heard of or things you usually had to go to H Mart or another ethnic specialty place to get. My only complaint is that for someone like me who doesn't always know what all these things are there is typically little or no explanation of what it is other than the name. It would be really cool if they put a little card that explained what you would actually use it in so I don't have to break out my iPhone to Google it while I'm standing there. The other weird thing is that under the produce they shelves that hold totally random things like crackers, jams, olive oil, etc. So while you are checking out the produce don't forget to look down and see what is stashed under there.
The next section is the bakery section. They have a wide selection of items from other bakeries & companies as well as a great deal of selections they make in house. Breads of all sorts, pastries and deserts are all available. The breads are good, but nothing that will blow you away. Some of the deserts and pastries are extremely good.
The next section is the deli & prepared foods section. Not only can you buy selections to take home with you, but you can stop in for a meal. The selections vary each day, but I've never been disappointed. The roasted chickens they offer are much better than grocery store ones and are similarly priced. The deli meats are a bit overpriced and a lot of the selections are available at most other stores except for their prosciutto. They always have a couple different varieties that are hard to find and very tasty.
The next section is the cheese. They have a full service cheese department with a very wide range of options. The only thing to watch out for is that the selections you can get at Whole Foods tend to be much cheaper than Russos. They do have many options that I have been unable to find except in small cheese shops that are not convenient for me to go to. Tucked off to the side of the cheese is a small fresh pasta section that tends to run out on busy days. They sell handmade fresh pasta of all different types. It is very good and not too expensive.
The last section is the dairy & meats. I've not been very impressed with these. They have the typical dairy brands and options that most other places have and are priced more expensive. The meats look interesting, but I have only bought a couple. The ones I bought turned out to be expensive and not as good as I was hoping for.
So overall this place can't be beat. The only downside is that it gets crazy crowded sometimes. So expect tight aisles with a lot of people and the check out lines can get a bit long. I think this is due to how long it takes to check out people who buy piles of stuff. -

I love this place! Every fruit and vegetable imaginable at very reasonable prices. Add to that cheese, breads, pasta, and awesome prepared foods and you have the place in a nutshell. My one major pet peeve, how crowded it gets. Fighting the carts to get down an aisle can be annoying especially on a weekend.

Their prices.....Thanks, sis... :)

I almost can't wrap my mind around the existence of Russo's.
Beautiful, fresh, INEXPENSIVE produce. A wonderful, very cheap salad bar. A huge variety of cheeses--stinky, crumbly, creamy, spongy and everything in between. Freshly baked breads that look like they were plucked from the window of a Parisian cafe. And pastries (I've had the mini cannolis, banana bread pudding and the cream puffs) that are scrumptious to say the least. I also love the very festive plant nursery outside.
Honestly, just walking into Russo's makes me happy. And I sense that my fellow shoppers feel the same way--there is not that hurried or stressed air that kind of appears in places where people are trying to complete an important errand so they can get home. (Okay, now I'm just gushing....)
Sadly I don't live anywhere near this magical supermarket and we have nothing in New York that can quite compare. I do get to visit Watertown fairly often, and when in town I don't miss up the chance to grab a salad, some pastries and SEVERAL cheeses. If you live in the area, you shouldn't even consider shopping anywhere else. :) -

MMMMMM... This was my long lunch break treat when I worked in Watertown. I'd head to the salad bar and treat myself to a few croutons and the killer balsamic vinagrette. Way more affordable than Whole Foods and fresher, too! Then I'd take some fruit, veggies, and pickles for my office for the rest of the week. So good! If I was feeling saucy, I might spring for the tuna melt or asian cold noodles.

This is by far my favorite place to shop in the Boston area.
Even though it is a 1/2 h drive from our place, we go there every single week.
-The produce is fresh, of the highest quality around here, and the variety is astounding
-Their cheese selection is amazing. Prices are reasonable (not cheap, but a great value for the money)
-Same goes for their deli meats
-Their home-made bread is excellent
-They have a wide assortment of imported foods, which are hard to find elsewhere -

I am so thankful to have this so near my house !
Reasons I shop here religiously:
1. The fruit & vegetables here are so fresh and great quality it makes whole foods produce look like it's rotting before you bring it home.
2. They feature some local products.
3. There garden center is inspiring and great quality.
4. The prices are very very good- especially the cheese section.
5. It has a great market like atmosphere unlike stop n shop.
The only downside is how busy this place is but you can't blame them for that. -

Think of a gigantic indoor farmers market. Amazing produce (you can find anything here and it's all fresh.) Where else can you get an Ugli fruit and a stalk of rhubarb? This is a cooks paradise, everything you need in one place and a lot of it they try to get locally. There is a bakery section, cheese, deli, salad bar, even a HUGE outdoor nursery.
The downside is this place is always ridiculously crowded and busy. Very worth the pushy people tho. -
Review from Wendy S.
Gourmet chaos! Yes, there is such a thing. I'd heard a lot of great things about Russo's from Yeeps, and had to check it out for myself. They have all the things I love: amazing cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, gourmet prepared foods...a foodie's dream! I went on a Saturday which I certainly wouldn't advise, as it was utter chaos. The parking lot/s feel like a war zone and fighting your way through the tiny spaces in the store can be exhausting. Chaos aside, the offerings are truly fantastic. I lingered around the cheese case long enough to peruse the outstanding offerings and speak with the friendly staff.
Yeah ok, so there's more to life than cheese (I grit my teeth as I write that statement). Russo's carries an insane selection of fresh produce and gourmet delights. I was also surprised to find that the prices were rather reasonable, and comparable to Whole Foods if not cheaper. Russo's is definitely on my roster of gourmet goodness in greater Boston, but I'll try to go after work instead of the weekend.Listed in: Peace Out, Boston

Excellent quality, great value, but it's not a one-stop-shopping kind of place - you may have to go elsewhere to buy regular home supplies, and there is no fresh meat and seafood section at all (this is not a ding, it's just what it is).
But what they do have is clearly excellent, and reasonably priced, so I'm regular.
Management: Please(!) open locations around the city, it's way too crowded on weekend ... -

The variety of produce here is.. amazing. My friend told me there were 10 types of eggplant here, and I did not believe her. I was wrong. They had giant local eggplants shaped like basketballs, asian eggplants, white eggplants, normal eggplants, three varieties of tiny eggplants, and a bunch of others I don't even recognize. And.. they have RAMBUTAN! Go ahead.. google it and check out its fuzzy weirdness.. I have not seen delicious baby off the Hawaiian Islands!
I have never seen such assortment of produce in one place. Russo & Sons have all the asian veggies and fruits I crave at great quality and very reasonable prices. No longer do I have to take the T and cram into the dark smelly crowded grocery stores in Chinatown for daikon!
I have not even checked out the garden center, the cheeses, or the deli, and I'm already in love. -

I do not understand how I have lived in the Boston area for my entire life and just discovered Russo's. Someone brought Russo's carrot cake to a party and immediately I felt a spark like I have met a soul mate. That very weekend I made a special trip out to Watertown, which I never do because it is so darn difficult to get to from the highway. Once you enter the plant nursery on tables, I felt like I was on a farm. Walking into this wondrous store, you gravitate towards the produce. Oh, the produce!!! My eyes were having a field day - mangoes, perfectly riped heirloom tomatoes, amazingly priced watercress, mint, basil, and yellow zucchinis. Once again, I am kicking myself for just finding this place. Finally I arrive at the bakery in the back. Jennifer is really great and helped us out in choosing cake flavors for a party we're throwing.
A plenitude of colors up and down the aisles, stacks and stacks of fresh bread, and breathing in buttery cakes. This is my version of heaven on earth. -

By far Russo's offers THE most enjoyable shopping experience!!!! It may be best described as Xanadu... however, they play lovely classical music instead of rollerskating-disco... which could still result in a very positive shopping experience at Russo's!
Just walking into Russo's puts me in a good mood. Their presentation is lovely and the store is immaculate. Their bakery, meat and cheese departments are fantastic, but I come here mainly for the beautiful, flawless variety of fruits and vegetables. They have just about anything you can imagine you'd want.... and then some. You will likely learn about items you didn't even know existed. They have an amazing garden selection offering some of the most beautiful plants and flowers.
They never seem to run low on any item. It almost seems that the minute two gorgeous red peppers are removed, they are magically replenished! Amazing! Everyone who works there is very helpful and friendly.
The Russo's experience is very high end, but their prices are far from expensive. They are cheaper than other grocery stores and the quality of the food is better. It is most definitely a win win.
The only downside is that it can get busy. If you can go during the week, you are better off.

I am a regular at Russo's and they are the BEST place to go for all of your produce. Their products are very fresh and they have great prices. Not to mention you should be able to find any fruit or vegetable you are looking for here (season depending). They also have a great bakery section with fresh bread and a cheese section. I frequent their salad bar which is fresh with lots of choices for toppings and their homemade raviolis are beyond fresh and they usually have 4 choices to chose from.
Would definitely recommend adding Russo's to your normal grocery shopping routine! -

Russo's, we need to talk. I love you, you know that so please take this with all the affection it is intended but .... seriously, $6.98 lb for Bing Cherries! It is summertime, and cherry picking time. Cherries should not cost more per pound then a good steak - just saying.
I buy your cheeses (insert drool here), and of course the fresh pastas - Fruits and veggies are a given. If I am buying your tomatoes, you know I am buying the buffalo mozzarella and basil (don't get me started on baked goods). So you know that I know that you are quality and are worth every penny, but seriously ... sticker shock when I get up to register and have to pay 17.10 for cherries.
I will still see you every week exclusively like I promised, and your stuff IS amaze-balls. Please see what you can do about the cherries.
