This place give small local business a GREAT name. The staff here can answer all your questions about running gear and training. I came here once to pick up a new pair of shoes for my half-marathon, and they explained what I need to be aware of when running long distances. I tried on several pairs, and each time they let me run outside and watched my stride so they could make sure I had the right fit. Today I picked up a stick to help get rid of some muscle pain and they showed me how to use it and also talked to me about using a foam roller. I also tried on some water belts and they told me to run outside with it to make sure it felt right. These guys are passionate about running and want you to be too so they'll make sure to fit you right.
Don't forget to check in for your Gu and check out the board behind the register for upcoming runs. If you're looking for quality running gear, stop in here and pick their mind. -

Forget about Zappos and go to this place. The staff here knows every shoe on the wall, and how it fits every type of foot and type of runner. Oh, and also forget Zombie Runner in Palo Alto - they have no idea. The reason you go to a store that specifically sells running shoes is for the expertise of the staff and also that selection is limited to the best shoes. The selection at A Runners Mind concentrates on quality of materials in the shoe, durability, and type of usage the shoes will get. Awesome.
They test your stride and be prepared to try on a bunch of different shoes. Feed the parking meter and get comfortable, and leave with a pair of shows that will work for you, and get you out there more often. -

Met with Monte and received awesome personal one on one service. I tried on several different shoes, after he observed how I walked. None of the shoes felt right when I run tested them.
I told him I run way different than I walk and so he watched me run and BAM! First pair back in the store were magical. I knew right away they were a winner (brooks cadence).
Picked up some gu gel as well. Will definitely be back. -

Prior to A Runner's Mind, I always picked my own shoes at Sports Basement in SF. I had no idea about my step or what I need. I bought whatever was in my budget and looked ok, and never loved my shoes -- especially not the way I do now...
I came in to A Runner's Mind last night and had the best shoe-buying experience of my life. Monty was extremely knowledgeable and informative. He looked at my old shoes, assessed the wear on them and also watched me run back and forth in the shoes he suggested to ensure that comfort and fit were correct. He knew every detail about the shoes: their weight, the millimeter angles from heel to toe, and other stats that he could then apply to how they affected the way I ran.
The shoes he recommended (Brooks) are fabulous. They look great, feel great, and the cost was very reasonable. I left the store and tested them out on my local 3 mile loop. I was noticeably faster than in my old lead boats, and the adjustments he recommended on my stride eliminated any uncomfortable impact on my knees. It was a the best feeling, like I was running on air!
I'll definitely be buying my running shoes from ARM going forward. I can't wait to try their running club tonight too! -

Facing my mid to early, early 40's and making a commitment to runThe Tough Mudder this year, I needed some good shoes to train in and a place to get me down the right path. A Runner's Mind was needed. Monte took the time to analyze my stride and running style and had me try on 5-6 different pairs of shoes. This may seem like a lot of different shoes but Monte explained the differences and benefits in each shoe. In the end I walked out with a perfect fitting pair of Asics.
Rarely do you find knowledgeable and friendly service of this kind. There was no 'hard' selling you experience at other stores, just a genuine sharing of expertise for a newbie's running needs. I will be back! -

Probably one of the best in-store shopping experience I had was at this place. I just started running and needed advice on a new pair of shoes. Without any pressure to make a purchase, they had me try out and run in 4 pairs of shoes. We picked the best one for my needs.
Getting the same shoes online may be cheaper, but the help you will get in this store with finding the right pair of shoes for you is way more valuable than the $20-$30 you may save. Especially if you are just starting like me, I would highly recommend talking to these guys and get their expert advice before you injure yourself with a wrong choice of equipment. -

Never thought I would ever give an athletic shoe store a 5-star rating, but the service here was exceptionally great. I was helped out by Monty and he was very patient and helpful in finding the right fit for me. He had me run outside and test on around 8-9 shoes before really finding one that I liked.
I really liked how they didn't make me feel obligated to buying a pair of shoes on the spot. Though I'm sure you can find these shoes cheaper online, I was more than happy to make my purchase in-store due to the great service I received. -

Monte was very knowledgeable. He selected 4 pairs for my needs and let me run/walk outside to test them out. He watched me walk and asked about any previous injuries. He was very thorough. Will definitely be back!

Small shop, privately owned which is why I came here versus the local Road Runner Sports store. - I favor small biz owners. I was the only one in the store and was politely greeted. They seemed to have a good selection of running gear. I received great service and will go back! BAM!

Came here for some help because I was getting recurring blisters in my new running shoes. I was hoping they can suggest an insole or any type of other solution to my problem. I didn't even get the shoes here but came here for their expertise and Jennifer spent an hour with me going over what the problem was and how to fix it. She had me try on multiple running shoes, just to further diagnose the problem. She wasn't pushy at all in talking me into buying another pair of shoes or dismissive because my shoes weren't purchased there. She was super understanding and patient and I ended up trying out special socks that she suggested...so far it's working!
Highly recommend and will definitely be getting running shoes from them next time. They know their stuff! -

I went here for the first time this Saturday and got fitted for and bought a pair of Asics running shoes. They are amazing. The guy was super nice and helped me find the perfect shoe and insert for my feet after taking lots of measurements. Today I had my first run where I didn't have blisters, foot numbness, or any other type of foot pain. The only thing exhausted and worn out is my body. I can't wait to go back after I wear these out!

After doing a lot of research myself I went in for new running shoes today. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of expertise and excellent customer service. Monte shared a lot of knowledge about various shoes and running styles plus listened to the specifics of my running style and training behavior. This is MY new running gear store!! I can't wait to report back to them on my new Newton's and Garmin Forerunner - yay.

Decided after weeks of research and a family brand ambassador to make the move and purchase a pair of Newton's. Went online and found A Runners Mind as the closest to SF so I thought why not give them a try first.
From the minute I walked in, the place was filled with good energy and happy staff. Faisal even noted I was wearing a rare Farm running shirt.
In addition to some local running knowledge, Faisal was also one great associate sales guy. He guided me through my options and I decided to take the leap with a purchase of Momentum's. In a cool surprise, I was the first to but a pair at this shop which I later learned is a family shop. For my luck, I got a pair of socks - much appreciated as you can never have too many low cut socks.
Even though I live in SF, I'm planning on keeping a Runners Mind at the top of list when I need new shoes. Everyone who reads this should give them a chance too. Top shelf attitude and service are my takeaways, no wonder Newton chose to put their shoes in this store. -

The staff at A Runner's Mind go above and beyond!
1) Called in once to ask about store hours, and they let me know if I needed to come in a little later they would stay open for me. Later than 7? Sweet!
2) Researched Mizuno trail shoes and called A.R.M. to inquire about their opinion. Faisal and I discussed my current shoe and the trails I run on and determined that the Ascend would indeed be the best choice for me. He put in an order for me, but not before calling me back to ask whether or not I'd like the newest version in pink (definitely not). He saved us both the hassle of a return.
(A sidenote: Had previously tested the Asics hybrid trail/road shoe that I got from this store as mentioned in my previous review. Sadly, Asics give me horrible blisters. Luckily, A.R.M. let me return them after testing them out and I picked up a new pair of road shoes. Hence, the continue search for trail shoes.)
3) When I went to pick up my new Ascends a week later, Jennifer let me know about the new trail runs that they organize on Sunday mornings at 8 am (and that I apparently have a "Mizuno foot", who knew?). By the time I got home, I had received an email from her letting me know where they were meeting for their next trail run and how I could get updates about each week's location on their FB page in the future. Alas, 8 am on a Sunday morning is a bit of a stretch for me but I love that I at least have the option.
***** Great customer service
***** Truly knowledgeable staff
***** Building a community of local runners through their FREE organized runs
BTW - the Mizuno Ascends were FANTASTIC on the trails. Thanks for all the help!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Nice owners. It's nice to walk into a store where they know what the shoe is actually made of instead of "this one is squishy and this shoe is more firm" (actual shoe clerk from another store told me this).
Very friendly & knowledgeable.

Incredibly knowledgeable; certain the advice they give here won't be deleterious down the road as it may be, and often is, in larger chain shoe-stores. Monte really knows what he's talking about, made a quick analysis of my gait, and had some fantastic suggestions. Even if I hadn't looked at their website before going in, could surmise that they are runners.
They only carry the best brands/materials- didn't try to inveigle me into purchasing anything. Although I likely will when I pop back in to pick up my shoes, since I won't have my dog with me. Yup- doggie-friendly. Huge plus. They keep track of all your info and purchases in the computer, which is a nice touch.
Super friendly/welcoming. Tremendous store- will be back. (Beyond picking up my shoes next week) Excited to get back into the running groove with my new shoes- confident I'll love them. The passion for what they're doing is concentrated and it shows. Hoping to find another buttered popcorn jelly belly or two while I'm at it.

Been here a couple times now and it's such a great place. Monte is really good at getting you fitted with a shoe that's perfect for you. I like that the experience is complete, educational, and pressure free! I haven't worked with the other people who work here, but I see return customers come and go and they all seem very happy and satisfied with the previous purchases and sometimes just come in for advice. They don't push sales because they understand an unsatisfied customer will just come back to return it. Remember to check-in to get your FREE Gu gel!

Review from Nicholas B.

My experience shopping at A Runners Mind has been similar to that of an extreme makeover challenge. I first jogged down to the Keleher's store wearing a pair of shredded new-balance walking shoes, basketball shorts draped halfway to my ankles, and a cotton t-shirt sleeve transformed into a hairband.
In the past, I had always been reluctant to try out new gear because I quite firmly believed that running 'technology' was simply a marketing ploy.
After a short dialogue with Monte, he explained the various differences of each shoe's 'technology' and told me try out a stability shoe, neutral shoe, light stability, and road racers. He told me to run in each pair as much as I wanted and I gladly took him up on his challenge.
I did not intend to buy anything when I first showed up. I simply wanted to check out the new store and see what kind of gear they carried - just in case the soles of my shoes actually tore off.
In the end, I left my decrepit shoes at his shop that day and ran home in a brand new pair of Asics Stabilities. I continue to frequent the store during my runs to hang out with Monte and Jenny and eat their Jelly Beans. Its an amazing spot to drop in on mid-run, to take a drink of water from their cooler, and then to continue on running while wondering why everyone couldn't be that nice all the time.
By Christmas my running wardrobe became completely retrofitted, and I couldn't be more happy about it today. My running game has taken on a new level and has become so much more enjoyable now that I sport more comfortable attire.
The group runs are also a blast because nice people tend to attract more nice people. I strongly recommend visiting a Runner's Mind to anyone remotely interested in running. You will feel more informed about the sport and probably feel like you just made some new friends. -

I have been to RoadRunner, Runners High (which is now Fleet Feet) and REI for my running needs. To say the least, this place may be a quarter of the size of all the major stores, but its 100x times better.
To put it simply, ITS THE BEST DAM LITTLE RUNNING STORE IN THE BAY AREA.
The people who work here have a passion for running, so much so its contagious.
Enough said. -

Buying running shoes from chain stores like footlocker or online is a terrible idea, and stores like A Runner's Mind will remind you of this. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and go out of their way to make sure that the shoes you walk out with are right for your feet as well as your running habits.
Runner's Mind is my new go-to for all my running necessities. -

I'm a beginner to running and this store definitely makes me excited to become more avid about the activity.
A few days ago I Came in here to see if they carried any type of accessory to cover up my ears during my runs. I hate the feeling of frozen ears and the stabbing pain that accompanies it. Monte directed me right to what I was looking for :)
He informed me that they offer gait testing and let you actually test run the shoes before you buy.
Today, I brought my boyfriend in because his shoes are worn out and he's due for a new pair. He had his testing done. Ran in a couple pairs. And found the kind he liked. The color he wanted wasn't in stock so they had to be ordered.
When his shoes arrive I'm going to have my testing done and look to buy a new pair. I asked the guy helping us why is it that when I run longer distances (3+miles) my toes start to numb up. He told me what I have now is probably an exact fit and not allowing for the expansion of my foot as it swells during longer runs. Makes total sense!!
You definitely get real personalized attention by people who really know what they are selling. Unlike foot locker or any of those larger chain stores whose sales associates could care less about your comfort or whether you're buying the right product for your gait.
Oh and I'm looking forward to joining one of their group runs soon :) -

Stopped by after a local dinner kinda late 8 pm and was surprised to see them open. Not only open but it looked like they were having some sort of a party. Apparently, they were finishing an evening run and were having I think wine and cheese. Super friendly and smart so I bought 2 pairs (Mazunos and Brooks) of shoes from Jennifer (owner.) They didn't have my size so it was special ordered and would arrive in about 1 week. So I got the shoes and they fit perfectly! I forgot to sign my card so I returned 2 days later to finish the transaction and to my surprise, Jennifer gave me 4 water bottles that I was asking about. What a GREAT gesture!
Questo negozio è il terrificante! This store is awesome! -

The most patient folks around. I tried on several pairs of shoes and the sales person pushed me to try on more to ensure that I was completely satisfied. In addition to being patient, sales person was very knowledgeable. I used to go to Road Runner's in San Carlos but the workers there are fairly clueless. I highly recommend A Runner's Mind. We need to support local stores like this.

I received excellent service at A Runner's Mind. I wondered by, but only had twenty minutes to spare. I entered the store and was immediately greeted and helped. They sized my feet, selected several pairs of shoes for me to try, watched me run a bit down the block and rang up my transaction all in the twenty minute window. I was quickly on my way with a new pair of shoes. She even mentioned I could bring them back within 30 days if I didn't like them.
I must say the shoes (Brooks) are an excellent fit and extremely comfortable.
In these days of big box sporting goods stores and online 'discounters', it is outstanding to find a small, focused shop dedicated to customer service. I will certainly return! -

I originally was looking for a specific type of socks which were only available either online, REI or a specialty running store. I ended up talking to the staff and found out that there is a running club that is free and a training session that you pay to help train up for competitions. They do carry minimalist shoes like Vibrams five finger and will order the size if not present in store. Unlike Nike Running the staff here are a lot more approachable and knowledgeable about the types of shoes and can find a fit for the price and purpose.

What a treat to have a running store in Burlingame again! Runner's Feet left a gaping hole when they closed a few years ago so I'm happy see Runner's Mind in town.
I recognized these brands on their shelves: Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, and that super-cushy trail runner which I can't remember the name of.
Best of all, Runner's Mind carries Moving Comfort sports bras. They didn't have my size but the friendly staff offered to order it and said it'll be in store next week - just in time for my next race: the Big Sur Trail 1/2 Marathon.
I look forward to watching this store grow. -

Great staff and store. They know what they are talking about when it comes to filling a runners shoe needs. They do not try to push the "flavor" of the day as some chain shoe stores attempt to do for the sale.

I can't say enough of Monte, Jenny and the whole crew at A Runner's Mind. The gear has been wonderful. The consultative approach they use, amazing. The depth of knowledge first class. I love the business and people so much I joined the running academy. My running has improved so much and my injury levels have dropped. Monte gave me so much great advice in injury prevention while working with me on shoe selection that it's made a big difference in my training. I'm so happy they are here and I really hope they're around for a long time to come.

Bought shoes for my son (cross-country runner) soon after the store opened. Great experience, and unlike shoes bought at Road Runner Sports, they were perfect. The difference was that here they strongly encouraged him to run in the shoes he was trying on. At Road Runner they didn't even suggest it, and they pushed $90 insoles on us (pure profit, zero benefit for the customer; if it was that easy to improve a shoe, they would already be designed that way! don't believe me? look it up: snake oil.) Anyway, we live in SF, but when my shoes wore out, I made a special trip here. Great experience again. Tried on seven pairs of shoes, and ran with them outside. Low-pressure, very helpful staff, great selection, NOT expensive. Locally-owned.

People are so friendly here! This morning, there was an after Thanksgiving run at 9am so my friends and I joined the run. It was about 5 miles around the Burlingame/Hillsborough neighborhood, no major hills or anything! One of the owners was very friendly and always turned back to guide people along the run and have a nice convo. Friendly people is definitely a bonus! Prices are a bit high, but everything was 20% off in the store today!

Monte, Jenny, & Todd...what a combo. By far the nicest family I've every met. Oh, and the store is great too. Whether you need a pair of high end shoes, pair of shorts, or just some GU's for your next run, this store has it all.
All the staff (Liz & Fazel too!) are extremely knowledgeable and are willing to listen at take advice at the same time. Whether I am running with the Thursday night group (7pm at the store) or the 6am group with Team ARM (BHS Track), I always feel a positive vibe that you don't often experience anywhere else.
I am so excited to have a running store in my home neighborhood and even more thrilled that it is run by a friendly, knowledgeable staff, who cares about each and every customer. -

I'm such a fan of A Runner's Mind. The store has a really comfortable atmosphere with knowledgeable sales people. One of the store owners, Monte, is super friendly, easy to talk to and an actual runner! What a bonus. He recently helped me pick out a pair of running shoes and they've worked out great. Shopping there is like visiting a friend who happens to have a lot of product knowledge! I've never felt pressure to buy anything and I am really happy with all of my purchases. In this era of the mega retailers, it's so nice to shop at a smaller store that offers personalized service and solid product knowledge.
