Review from Jamie M.
FOREST HILLS, NY
I had a breakfast here this morning of a poppy-seed bagel, a blueberry crumb muffin and a small green tea. The total came to $4.88. (I didn't get a receipt, so I'm not sure what each individual item cost.)
The bagel was just an average poppy-seed bagel. The muffin was just an average blueberry crumb muffin. (Caveat: I'm not much of a bagel or muffin connoisseur.)
Nothing fancy or pretentious about this place, and nothing special either.
They have a few tables near the entrance and I sat at one. The tables were clean - except for mine because I spilled tea, muffin crumbs and poppy seeds on it. -

I LOVE, LOVE LOVE this place.
The only place I know that serves flat bagels, which are good and never burned.
I live two blocks away, and every morning, I get a bagel from them and I am always amazed at how friendly the staff is, and the great variety of spreads available.
Granted this place isn't the ultimate place when it comes to service from the owners and the seats available for people who prefer to take their food "to stay", but lets not forget it is only a bagel shop, and thus it should be judged by:
1. their ability to retain information and deliver quickly on their orders (check)
2. the sanitary conditions of the place (check)
3. the friendliness from the staff ( not the owners) (check)
4. the freshness and variety of their products ( check).
I am not giving this place five stars because it could use of some improvements.. but overall. I am a fan. -

The bagels themselves are good. The problem is the staff won't actually toast them for you. Someone must have complained about an overtoasted bagel years ago and now even if you ask them to run it through the machine twice the bagel will barely tan.
They also put a disgusting amount of cream cheese on the bagel. Some of you may love this - I've taken to getting two bagels, one with, one without, and sharing. -
Review from Jeff F.
The bagels are good enough and I'd say the cream cheese options are slightly above average (lots o' tofu) but the notable thing here at this otherwise run-of-the-mill joint is the customer service.
Same crew always but special note of the owner (I'm assuming) manning the register who's an affable sort with a cheery disposition. Even when it's chock-a-block on Sun morning with lots of PS "breeders" and their strollers, he's always got it under control and you're assured to get your correct order post haste!
Return customers seem to benefit too from memorized orders. -

The main reason for giving AREA bagels three stars is:
they deliver stuff to your door in a reasonable amount of time.
The bagels are ok, yummy when warm, but good for the day after a night of fun. They charge too much for large iced coffee, but whatareyougonnado? If you make a sleepy phone call for breakfast vittles and the guy shows up in 15 minutes or so, that gets you three stars.
Too bad I can't tack on half a star for the generosity of cream cheese ladling and attention to requests for scooping out the over fluffyness of the bagel. And they will bring you the paper. -

The Short:
For bagels in Park Slope it's okay. For bagels in NYC it's disappointing.
The long:
I give the staff here 5 stars. They are awesome and helpful. When I stood in line the main worker made this sausage and egg bagel to this woman's liking and it was such a long order (onions medium cooked, sausage well done, bagel very toasted...seriously this order went on for an hour).
The bagel I had was alright (whole wheat) but the strawberry cream cheese was lackluster. Also, I had a sausage, egg, and cheese bagel another time and it was decent but not the best. -

Below average food and terrible service. I ordered delivery and they completely screwed up the order. I requested a side of butter for my pancakes and received a side of mayonnaise. When I called to complain the owner insisted that he sent butter and not mayonnaise and that I don't know the difference. Take some pride in your work you worthless schmuck.

I think it was fate for us to meet. The brunch spot wasn't opening for another half hour and my stomach was grumbling. Across the street, with it's doors wide open and people enjoying their gooey goodness at the window, I was lured into A.R.E.A. for a bite to tie me over.
BEST BAGEL OF MY LIFE.
Sesame Bagel with lite veggie cream cheese. Standing outside and eating it with coffee in one hand (cream poured perfectly), as the toasted crunchy sides hugged the dripping cheese oozing on the sidewalk~Plop!
In an effort to keep the city clean and to taste every bite, I engorged the thing. And it was the best deed I did all day.
What's a bialy? It's not boiled before baking and it doesn't have a hole. Sometimes the depression is filled with stuff like onions, garlic or poppy seeds (all of which I love) but in this case, it was cut in half and filled with lite scallion cream cheese. It was so good the first thing I said to myself was "I finally have something to put for my most recent discovery on yelp."
They sell lots of drinks and paninis, with a large deli counter showcasing about 15 different kinds of cream cheeses. I wish I could tell you more but I got what I came for. For three people to quiet their appetite for an hour, it was $10 with 3 drinks. The service is quick with two guys making your order while you wait to pay, and another to ring you up.
You might be curious where this enthusiasm comes from. NY is known for the best pizza and bagels among many other things but I have been depriving myself of this luxury for a month since I've moved to DC from SF. If I don't stumble upon a good bagelry in DC/VA soon I might have to bribe someone else to open one. I'm serious people, this just won't do. -

1) I love flat bagels. Every other bagel shop in this freaking city cells out of them by 915. NOT AREA! I can stroll in at 1130 on a Sunday and know I'm getting a flat everything.
2) I don't like a lot of (tofu) cream cheese. Less is more, especially when its all cold and hard. Just a schmear and I'm happy. These guys know the bagel should be bigger than the toppings.
3) Hangover Cure A1 are the homefries from here. Not too greasy, little bits of green peppers and onions. Oh. Yeah.
4) Friendly friendly folks.
5) Soy for coffee. -

I feel like a whore. I have two lovers, and can't pick one... Bergen Bagels or A.R.E.A. I consistently go back and forth, being equidistant between the two. Lately, I've been more likely to give myself to A.R.E.A, but I think it has something to do with the man behind the counter and his iced coffee that he blends nicely for me. But the bagels are pretty consistently good, and they are speedy, too. Ugh... I can't pick one over the other. At least A.R.E.A. isn't usually as crowded.
What does their name mean, though? -

Continuing my neighborhood bagel sampling, I stopped in for my standard test buttered sesame. I had high hopes, my husband likes the bagels here. Unfortunately, the bagel was dry and tasteless with substandard butter. This proves once again that the only time my husband had good taste was when he married me.

Love this spot! Not only are the bagels good but the staff is extra nice! I worked up the street from here and wanted salad. the guy took the time to make me the best Caesar salad that I've had in a long time!! he also suggested I add tomatoes just because he was sure that it would be good! He was right! I got the same salad 3 days in a row...smh!!
Now the bagels...CINNAMON RAISIN BAGEL WITH WALNUT AND CINNAMON CREAM CHEESE!...ENOUGH SAID! -
Review from Lisa D.
This bagel shop is passable but not outstanding. They don't seem to replenish the bagel bins often enough to keep pace with demand, such that everytime I've been in there, there's only been three choices and the bagels aren't always at the peak of freshness. The scallion cream cheese is amazing, and they have a lot of other topping choices. It's a big place with a full deli and breakfast sandwiches and has a good location.

The best egg-n-cheese in Brooklyn. Great bagels, solid cream cheese. Fresh-squeezed orange juice, great iced coffee, great staff. A regular weekend spot for me!

I give this place 3 stars for having decent food and service, but an extra star for selling beer. My main complaint is that they don't toast the bagels as dark as I'd like them too.

The bagels here aren't bad, but they aren't great either. Decent place if your in the area and in the mood for a bagel, but definitely not worth seeking out.

I gave this place a couple of tries, but the mood there is foul.
1) Owner yelling at employees on two different occassions. The patrons were uncomfortable.
2) Owner telling a customer that he's losing money selling a whole pie to customer rather than by the piece. I have no idea why he didn't just quote a higher price, but he was acting as if it were the customers fault.
3) The cook gave me the wrong item and then insisted that I ordered it that way (hint - I've never ordered just egg whites my whole life). When I politely told him that I didn't order it that way he refused to make me a new one.
I'd love for this place to either go out of business or sell out to someone who understands customer service. Or better yet, go to Coffee House Bagel at the corner of Dean, just a block and a half away. -

I dont know how so many people gave it 5 stars. This place is awful! I have lived across the street for 2 years and have gone to bergan bagels instead. Area rarely gets my order right and are overpriced. I have ordered two turkey sanwiches got charged $15 and came home to find no turkey on either of them! I have ordered blt where there was all lettuce and half a piece of bacon. Most of the staff seem to be pretty dim except for the one guy who has been there forever. Make sure to always check your sandwich before you leave.
