Passage to India is the real deal.
Interior is very elegant yet simple. They offer booth seating and tables.
The food here is sooo good! The dishes come out and are placed on top of mini burners to keep it piping hot! I love that because anyone who knows me, knows I love my food piping hot, so hot it burns the roof of my mouth.
The chicken narial which was a special was excellent. It was a coconut based sauce but it had an aftertaste of pineapple. It was sweet but not overpowering and still had that Indian curry flavor.
The lamb tikka masala, although it was good, I wish the meat was a little more tender.
The rice is so fragrant and perfectly cooked.
The naan is ok. I prefer it to be a little more crispy and doughy at the same time. This was rather soft and reminded me of a pita pocket.
The staff here is nice and attentive. Prices are moderate, not expensive but not cheap. Our lunch meal came out to $35.
But I would defiantly eat here again.
With Indian food being hard to come across in the North Shore, those of us in the area are fortunate to have A Passage to India nearby. This is good food at reasonable prices.
Two people can eat well for about $30 here. Not bad!
Recommendations:

-Chicken Korma (good good!)
-Chicken curry (yum!)
Also, they do take-out and they're fast!
Again, with Anmol in Beverly, I had a tough time deciding between 3 or 4. It's like 3.51 star...but then again, I think about my Jackson Heights, NY experience of Indian food and it automatically gets a 3 star but thinking about Anmol in Beverly, you get a 4 star.
Nans are amazing. To be honest, I think their nans beat some of the nans in Jackson Heights for sure. It's hot, seasoned well and as you dip it in the sauce, it soaks up all the goodies so that your mouth could experience a unique sensation that you will remember for the rest of your life.
The biggest reason for a 3 rating is their chicken, which is a bit tough just like the ones in Anmol. You see, when you are eating Chicken Tikka Masala, the chicken ought to melt in your mouth with the sauce that has a perfect balance of spices (not too spicy, but not too sweet).
But it's hard to get this right.
New go-to when I come home to visit my Mom a few times a year. We've now been 3 times & keeps getting better. Last week we shared a meat & a vegi sampler, as well as some samosas. Pretty standard order, but I am easing my Mother into Indian food, so, you know. Standouts were eggplant, chickpeas & poori. They even make a mean martini.
For about 10 years we had a tradition of going straight to In A Pigs Eye on the way back from the airport, but after a few bad meals circa 2006 - 2007, so happy we now have a Salem alternative!
Lovely indian food conveniently located in downtown Salem's shopping district.
Fragrant jasmine rice perfectly spiced with coriander and anise accompanies rich Indian dishes. Haven't tried the fried apps like the samosas, etc, but they looked good.
I like An Mol in Beverly a little more -- dishes are lighter and more delicate and service is friendlier -- but this restaurant is wonderful for any Salem-area resident looking for a nice Tikka Masala.
Also, super convenient -- they have online ordering through foodler! No waiting on the phone and struggling to hear the waiter over the busy restaurant. (They don't deliver though, so you still have to pick it up -- but your order will be perfectly prepared and ready super-fast.)
Great place to take friends or parents, though the dining room can get a bit noisy at peak times. They have a nice bar in the front room, but I stick with their delicious mango lhassis.
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Salem. I'm used to having a ton of Indian food places back where I used to live, and coming here always reminds me of my mum's cooking. Everything tastes fresh here and it's because they grind their own spices. The vegetarian selection is excellent. I often get the vegetable masala because it's just so easy to eat, and they get the spice level just right. I'm not sure if they destarch the rice but it has that perfect, light, fluffy melt-in-your-mouth quality.
The restaurant has become so popular that they've had to expand their space repeatedly in recent years, but the seating areas are still cozy and intimate. The staff are always very friendly and the owner always says hello when we come in. If you've never eaten this type of food before it's best to try milder dishes first such as the korma, or even some appetizers such as the vegetable samosas. Okay, so I'm almost kind of drooling now, but I wished they stayed open later. If they offered wi-fi and had a cocktail menu I'd probably never leave.
Ok fine. Five stars.

This place is good. I was seated promptly and had no problems with any of the staff. They seem to be moving at hi-speed compared to everybody. The interior is nicely decorated, but the seating can be somewhat cramped.
The food is excellent. It was my first time going there, so maybe I missed the memo...but my food wasn't spicy at all. Indian food? Not spicy? ... Okay anyway. The palak paneer and samosas were on par with the food that I had when I was in india. The tikka masala tasted sweeter than what I was used to though. I'm sure if it had some spice, it would've saved the dish. The chai comes unsweetened so be ready for that.
I like how their dishes come with little candles underneath to keep the food warm.
An overall excellent dinner. I'll be back for mo! Fo sho.
BEST Indian food in the Boston area. The food is fabulous!! It is fresh, high quality, and tasty. I love Indian food and have been to restaurants around Boston, including Kashmir and Anmol.
Passage to India is absolutely the cream of the crop. The naan is always fantastic and warm. The chutneys are lovely.
For an appetizer, try the vegetable pakora. So yummy! I love it with the plum-colored chutney. So delectably good! And the chicken tikka masala is the best in the area!
Hands down - the food here is great as well as at their Porter Square location. I hear that they also own Jewel in the Crown in Newburyport. This is disappointing since the food there isn't near as good, and I have found that location to have dirty tablecloths, etc.
Stick with the true Passage to India in Salem or Porter Square in Cambridge. So, so good!!
There's a reason why Passage has nearly 80 reviews and nothing below a 3-star rating. A Passage to India serves the best Indian cuisine around. Period. The quality and flavor of their dishes are simply unrivaled.
I've been going here for years and it is still my favorite place for Indian food, nay, one of my favorite restaurants in general. My favorite entree is the Lamb Kebob, but their curry, korma, and tikka masala dishes are also fantastic. The sauces are just so incredibly savory, fragrant, and delicious that you can't help but smother the rice in it, soaking everything up with a hot piece of your favorite naan (mine happens to be the Kashmir Naan). And you can adjust the level of spice of your dish, so whether you like it mild or tongue-numbingly hot, Passage will tailor your order to your tastes.
I have to mention that the staff is very friendly, always attentive, and guarantees a pleasant night out, whether with your significant other or a group of friends.
If you haven't been to Passage yet, you need to go!
Went there last weekend while visiting my aunt in Salem.
It was... Decent. Tasty, but nothing exceptional.
We had Chicken Mehkni, Shrimp Tikka Masala, and Chicken Saag along with some Naan.
We stuffed our faces and were delightfully satisfied.
The service was a bit abrupt and they all looked miserable to be working. I felt like I was bothering the staff than being a customer.
I'd rather go to Punjab.
My husband and I tried this restaurant based on the other reviews below. Thank you for the great reviews! We really enjoyed this place. I would have made it a 4 1/2 stars but there is no option for it.
Went two wknds ago on the rainy Sat. Place was busy which was a good sign. We were seated right away and given some flat bean crispy wafers and dipping sauce to start with - good, one was spicy and the other sweet. Ordered the Kashire Naan based on reviews - VERY good, it was like dessert! Reminded us of cinnamon raisin bread but it was a thin paste in the naan.
My husband ordered the chicken curry and I ordered the veggie platter sampler. Good portions, mine came with rice and three small veggie dishes and a yogurt sauce. Really enjoyed it and my husband dish was great too. It was actually a red sauce and it wasn't spicy, which was a surprise but good for people that may not like spice. I think the restaurant is catering to general by not making all their dishes spicy. I think next time we may ask to spice it up. The only thing would be better is if their water glasses were bigger. We just stuck with water but where it was busy we sometimes had to wait for refills.
Everything was delicious though. We will return and live about 15 mins away.
I have read many reviews of this restaurant and find them uninformed about indian food. My wife and I are ethnic Punjabis (the region from which most of the Passage to India cuisine is from). We tried this restaurant with NYC friends who are also Indian food savvy. All of us found the food to be needlessly over spiced and not fresh. we ordered the aloo gobhi, chicken tikka masala, and saag paneer. the aloo gobhi was mis-spiced with ambhchoor. the chicken tikka masala was not fresh and heavily salted. the saag paneer was soupy. This is not good indian food. My wife and I found Anmol in Beverly to be a better choice 3.5-4 stars. the best Punjabi food that we have found near Boston is at The Punjab in Arlington and The Punjabi Dhaba in Inman Square Cambridge.
I came here for dinner with a group of 16, after having called only minutes before to ask if they could accommodate a group of our size. When we got to the restaurant, we were seated promptly and the table was already set with water, papad, and chutney.
My dad, not a huge curry fan, ordered the chicken tandoori, while I ordered the chicken tikka masala. Our table also shared garlic naan and kashmire naan. The food was delicious! My aunt's chicken saag looked nasty, but it was also very tasty.
We were given hot towels at the end of the meal to wipe our hands, but my uncle had to use the towel to wipe some curry stains off his pants. Luckily, I did not get curry stains on my smart sweater vest.
When I first moved to Salem, my boyfriend and I walked all over town trying to find a nice little restaurant to have our "welcome to town" lunch at. We stumbled upon Passage and decided to try it out.
The location is quite great, right in the main "drag" of restaurants and shops in town. The atmosphere is nice, no blaring music and no obscene amount of light. So far my boyfriend and I have gone here several times and each time we've gotten the same exact table. I'm such a sucker for things like that. Back in the corner, right in front of the window. People watching at its best, and I can even hide the mess I make on the table.
My one gripe about this place is how small the servings are, for such a high price. They also make me feel hurried every time I go in there. I can't say I've ever had an hour long meal here. One evening after finishing our dinner, the couple next to us even commented on how much they loved the place, but how irritated they get over feeling rushed.
I'll still keep coming back for there vegetable masala. Oh how you've won my heart over.
"A Passage to India" is probably my most treasured and most visited restaurant in Salem. Classy atmosphere, an amazing menu and great location make it one of Salem's must-eats.
Their vegetarian options rival "Bangkok Paradise" but exceeds in their quality.
First off: The amazing Garlic Naan Bread is a required appetizer. Order Samosas if you're extra hungry. Both are good enough alone to sell you on a monthly visit minimum.
As for en trees, I highly recommend Kabuli Channa and their Vegetable Curry, as they are both pretty incredible. Also be sure to try their Indian Beer. You'd be surprised how much you get out of it.
I can't recommend this place enough. My boyfriend and I are always challenging ourselves to change things up by trying new restaurants, but "Passage To India" makes for one alluring dining experience.
Dress up, order lots of drinks and make a night out of it. You'll be glad you did.
A passage to India is just the right place for all the spicy and delicious Indian specialty. I had been to India 3 years back and the food was so colorful and exotic. When I came back home I realized why they call that country the spice machine.
When I visited A passage to India I was not sure whether these people can provide the same here. But, to my surprise I tasted the same food back here which I tasted it 3 years ago. And my tongue was dancing with joy with all the bread and the hot tandoori s here. The staff here were good and looked after me very well. At North shore I can see the Indian food as it is.
The paneer and the Tikka are my delicious order always. I have to try out so many other things on the menu. I am just wondering will it be the same with my buddies as I am planning this week to take them for this surprise party there.
One more thing I liked about in this restaurant was the price, I did not feel it overpriced or costly as the taste was really adorable.
Lunch with mom... it's a good thing especially when they let her use her coupon. Mom likes this.
The service was the perfect balance of attentiveness without intrusion.

I was so excited when I found out an Indian restaurant was coming to Salem a few years ago and I have never been disappointed. This is my favorite local restaurant. I never have a bad experience here. The food is always delicious. They have a large menu with a lot of vegetarian choices. They have a full-service bar also.
Service is always attentive. I order my food to go quite often and their takeout service is always pretty fast. Sometimes they offer me a coke while I wait! The atmosphere is relaxing and they play music.
Passage is an authentic and classy dining experience. Good food and atmosphere. Their weekday lunch specials are a good deal.
Love, love, loved it, and cannot wait to go back. I'm a big fan of dark wood, which pretty much describes the interior of the restaurant--windows face out to the Salem street, with large paintings on the walls.
The food was excellent--the garlic naan was spot on, my husband's chicken curry had the perfect amount of heat, and my Chicken Tikka Bhartha had just the right combination of elements. Each grain of rice was individual, though my only "complaint" would be that we could have used more (much more) of it. Especially when we took home so much, we ended up having to make an entire new pot for our lunches the next day.
Glad that we finally got to taste it and it's now going on our standard rotation of North Shore restaurants.

Passage is a solid Indian restaurant and a welcome addition to dining options on the north shore. The food and service are both very good, and I had a satisfying meal recently with five other diners. While the menu is pretty off-the-shelf and could use some more variety, they do a good job with standard North Indian dishes. I particularly enjoyed the okra (bhindi) which is often a weak dish at other Indian joints.
Wonderful Indian food (and I am VERY picky about my Indian food). The staff is courteous and quick. I go here almost every week and the food is always consistently well cooked. It's rare that I don't get seated as soon as I arrive. Also a very well known film celebrity has been spotted here a few times.

First off the food is really good, below is my critic.
Vegetable pakora- authentic
Garlic naan- probably the best I've had, and tasted home made
Aloo gobhi (potatoes and cauliflower)- this dish is the reason for four stars... it lacked something in the ingredients.
Chicken tikka masala- delicious, and the meat was quality and the sauce was great!
The best thing is the prices here are reasonable. The whole dinner cost only $35, which is something that never happens closer to Boston. I'd definately recommend this place for a great Indian cuisine.
I was expecting greatness, so maybe that's why I was a bit underwhelmed by my experience at A Passage to India.
I had the Chicken Tikka Masala (boneless white meat diced chicken tandoori cooked in a rich and creamy tomato sauce), the wife had the Goa Shrimp Curry (the famous shrimp curry of Goa, prepared wtih freshly ground coconut and an array of masterfully blended spices), and the son ordered one of the specials, which was Lamb Rack (lamb marinated in sour cream and spices, then grilled in a charcoal clay oven). What's in parentheses is the description on the menu. We also ordered the Basil Naan, which was delicious, and Mango Lassis for drinks, which were also yummy.
The spices in the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Goa Shrimp Curry seemed too similar to us. I didn't expect that at all, given the descriptions. I wanted more complexity and more layers of flavor than I got. My wife had a similar feeling. The Lamb Rack, however, was surprisingly flavorful. The meat was very tender and the dipping sauce that accompanied it was a nice match.
We'll definitely go again because it sure beat all the cookie-cutter restaurants around here, but we definitely want to try Anmol in Beverly and Bollywood Grill in North Andover before returning.

For those of you who are a little post-9/11-trigger-happy, I was just kidding. I wouldn't really rob a bank to eat here. I'd rob something smaller, like a Hess. Ok, that was just kidding, too....
What I'm trying to say is that I really like this place! I feel it's important to put in most of my reviews that it's not fair to compare most places on the N. Shore with their counterparts in Boston because Boston is a metropolis. So when I give a place 5 stars, I'm saying it's really hot for the area.
Here are some of the things I like about a Passage to India in general, then specific:
1. It's in the heart of downtown Salem so the parking is easy and there's plenty of interesting, cool little places to walk to before and/or after;
2. It's not huge and bustling noisy. It's nice and cozy and the lighting, to date, is kind of dim and ambient;
3. The waitstaff is VERY pleasant and attentive;
4. They've got a full stock bar and a mid-size TV for chilling out though I've never sat there;
Specifically...
1. All the food I've had so far is fresh, made-to-order, hot and perfecto. I've eaten a lot of Indian food so I know what I like and I know what I don't like.
2. The samosas are golden brown and slightly fluffy and the pakora are not too greasy and well-battered;
3. The main dishes are served in metal bowls over a candle flame so they stay WARM throughout the whole dinner.
4. The breads are fresh baked and delightful additions to any meal;
5. Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala are my usuals and are made with fresh meat that falls apart in your mouth. Its so tender you could pull it apart with a fork and the sauces are as spicy, or not, as you like them;
6. Thali dinner is a staple "dinner sampler" with a non-meat version, too. These are very nice and allows newcomers and veterans to sample a variety of tastes in one meal;
7. The mango lassi was just the right sour and sweetness and it, along with the regular lassi (or Raita, the cucumber dip) will cool your mouth of any hot spice still lingering;
Ok, I could go on, but what I want you to know is that if you're a veteran of Indian dining or just want to try a new place, YOU CAN ONLY GO RIGHT at this place.

This was a very good place. It was my first time having Indian food. The wood was excellent if you like Indian I just don't have a taste for all the spices and methods of cooking. The staff and owner were very friendly. If you are a fan of Indian food then I would say this is the place to go...
I miss this place dearly so I must give it a shout out. Looking forward to my next East Coast visit so I can dine at this quaint, cozy, and authentic establishment.
I must say that the Chicken Tikka Saag is the best tandoori style dish I've ever had. Now that's a bold statement.
If you have the time, sit down and take in the experience...overlook the historic downtown by window front, try a tasting of their Indian beers and robust curries, and soon enough the warm inviting ambiance will be the last feature to keep you coming back.

Huge selection. One of the best onion chutneys I have ever had. I found most things to be quite mild so If you want it really spicy you may have to ask.
I've only managed to eat here once, and from what I remember it was amazing.
However: a wait of over 3/4 hour more than once, or worse (the City of Salem's fault) no parking space after circling for over 1/2 hour and I have never managed to go a 2nd time.

Passage to India is one of my favorite restaurants in Salem, let alone favorite Indian restaurants. The food is consistently delicious. As far as I know, being a white girl from New Jersey, the good is authentic.
Aside from a warm and welcoming environment, a delicious smell hits you when you enter the door. The staff is amazingly friendly and competent. Everything is served in these beautiful copper pots and glasses that I really love.
The menu offers the perfect amount of selection. Enough to fit a range of tastes, so that you could even bring a first timer here. My favorites include the nan with great side sauces, vegetable masala, veggie curry, and veggie korma. The vegetarian appetizer sampler is a perfect way to sample a range of flavors and everything on it is delicious... especially the vegetable samosas. Lastly, I recommend trying one of their unique mixed drinks (like the one they entered in to the Salem Drink contest).
There are 4 other locations across Mass.... I haven't tried any yet but I hope they would be just as good.
A Passage to India was the warm, welcoming setting for my book club's latest Saturday night meeting. The staff was fantastic, rolling with some changes in our plan (including the need to procure us an extra add-on to our table at the last moment), explaining some of the dishes on the menu to those in our group who were less familiar with Indian food, and keeping up with the seven of us!
I'm less enthusiastic about the food itself. Because we had such a large group we got to try a lot of different things with quite mixed results. The naans, poori, pappadam, chutneys, and samosas were really good, the pakoras, curries and tikka masala were fine but sadly the palak paneer was not good at all--it had no flavor.
Recently tried there take out which can be done online. Very easy program to pick out what you want and food was ready in 20 minutes. Got to love this place : )

I really like this place. It is centrally located in downtown Salem; it has a very friendly staff; and the food is delicious. A few of my favorites: garlic Nan bread, vegetable biryani and Tandoori shrimp. As a bonus, the restaurant has a cozy feel to it.
This is by far the BEST Indian food on the North Shore! I really love this place and the food especially. I have been here often and have brought new people here as well and they all rave about the quality. My favourite dish is simple Chicken Curry and a side order of Meat Samosa's. What can I say? The food is awesome as well as the service and cozy setting. Watch for their lunch specials each day - they are hard to beat. Take-out is quick and well packaged.... Just awesome - you have to try it to understand what I mean!

This is coming from someone who has never grown up around Indian food. Actually most people in my culture would hate Indian food for its excessive use of spices. When I first tried it I was a little hesitant, but now I cannot get enough!
I should try their other dishes though, I only order the chicken tikka masala and a plain naan. However, the chicken masala is one of the best dishes. I would try to re-create it at home but I'm afraid it won't come out nearly as good as at A Passage to India. The naan is delicious and always served warm, soft and fluffy. And the meal comes with a side of rice cooked with aromatic spices. Yum.
I do have a bone to pick with the prices, which is why this restaurant is getting four instead of five stars. They are a little high. In my opinion $15 for a pint of chicken masala and a a bowl of rice is a little much. And I always order takeout or to go. Can't deal with the limited amount parking and the place is always packed with people when I go get my order.
Overall, Passage to India is a great restaurant, and I recommend for all Indian food lovers as well as those looking to dip into a new style of cuisine.
I used to work in Salem for some real tools and A Passage to India was my lunchtime escape. I would order up some takeout online (garlic naan, paneer tikka masala, vegetable pakoras, all for about 15 bucks), receive cheerful greetings and bright smiles when I picked it up, and bring it to my sister's apartment to enjoy my meal and visit with her puppy. Serenity now!
I have also dined in several times with my sisters and we have always been happy with the service and the food. This is the only Indian restaurant that I have been to that gives free papad chips with the mango onion chutney and tamarind sauce. I enjoy all the vegetarian dishes, but especially the paneer dishes. So good. The muligatwney soup is delicious too and it comes with a crispy vegetable pakora. I think I could eat a bucket of vegetable pakoras in all their fried delicious glory.
They ask you for the level of spice you desire on your dishes. I prefer mild because I am a child and I don't enjoy pain with my food. However, one time we were bold enough for medium. It was still delicious, but I required a mango lassi to cool me down. The servers are very watchful of water too and they keep the metal cups nice and full.
The prices seem comparable to other Indian establishments in which I have dined. A Passage has a warm and jovial atmosphere and is my tops for my paneer fix.
First, I don't claim to be an expert on Indian food, just a fan. That said, This is as good as I've had anyplace. It even beat the Indian I had at a famous London place.
Highlights include the Chicken Korma, Lamb Rogan Josh, Palak Paneer, kashmire or garlic naan, samosas and pakora appetizers. Last time I visited I had the chicken do piazza which was also very good. The spices and flavors mingle like a party in your mouth.
Bring some friends, share your dishes, wash it all down with a nice xl Indian beer. That's a recipe for a good evening out!
Naan/Online Ordering
If there is anything to die for in this world it is a naan bread hot out of the tandoor and Passage to India is a perfect location to enjoy this wonderful experience. Their naan is second to none. YouTube has a fascinating film clip out of India showing the traditional tandoor set up in operation. Hard not to appreciate the ability, productivity, and positive energy demonstrated. Google Tandoor Cooking YouTube, then go to Naan in Tandoor Oven- Forno Bravo Forum, then click on YouTube- ROTI in Wiley message box It's also easy to see the complexity of the oven involved and that it is not a homeowner type of accessory.
I thought I would also comment on Passage to India's on line ordering ability. This is really slick. http://ptisalem.foodle.../ I tried it for the first time and was amazed by how easy it made everything from order selection, remembering your past orders for easy reference and reorders, and editing your order in case your salivating mouth got ahead of your wallet. First time use was a cake walk. What a pleasure to be given an accurate pickup time knowing that your order is all prepaid and that you don't need a parking spot. Let's face it; it's like trying to park in front of the White House over there so the prepayment is really meaningful. Just run in, grab the order while enjoying the delicious smells coming from the kitchen, and eagerly run back to the car! You've got gold in your possession so move it! If you get one main course, one appetizer, and one bread for under $20.00, any meal at home for two of more people can be made exceptional with a small amount of additional meal preparation
A very popular place with the locals. Well, I actually don't know that for a fact, I just saw a lot of white folks there.
This place is pretty average for Indian food. I have never met an Indian place I didn't like, so I usually start them out at 4 stars. Only when they mess up or do something extraordinary that a girl always remembers, then I would subtract or add a star accordingly.
This is one my absolute favorite places to eat in Salem. The food is excellent, and the staff is very polite.
The food can get a little expensive, which is why I try to go during lunch time (everything is cheaper before 3pm).
The naan bread, and chicken tikka masala are amazing! I suggest everyone eat here at least once.
