Review from Vivian H.
Sometimes I like to pretend that I have all the money in the world, and that I am some famous person, someone important, someone with status. On days when I like to day dream, I tend to wander into stores like this.
I used to receive their catalog and still continue to like their simple yet stylish design. They tend to be a bit on the pricey side, but every now and again, they will have a pop-up sale somewhere in the city. Always keep an eye out for those!
So if you have a few hundred dollars to spare on simple, sleek clothes, check this place out. They also carry a wide selection of denim, bags, and shoes. -

EXPERIENCE: 1/16/12
My younger brother has a pair of New Standards that he wore into the ground. My Uniqlo's were about shot and I wanted to step up a notch, so I went to APC.
There was an air of smug that existed in that store somewhere between the front door and the cash register. I didn't feel intimidated, I just felt like I was in a store run by dicks. That all changed when I stepped into the back room to get fitted for some denim.
I had a very helpful, very kind guy help me find the perfect fit and mode. If you're dropping $200 on a pair of jeans, it helps to have someone who's job is to find the right jeans for a customer.
In the end, I walked out content in a pair of New Standards.
PRO:
- Denimsmith(?)
- Quality
CON:
- Smug
- Expensive
BOTTOM LINE: I'll only ever get their jeans. -
Review from Mike C.
Though I think APC is kidding themselves with their prices recently, they always put together a consistently wearable and coherent collection. If I had to build a wardrobe with pieces from only one store, this would be the one. I think they could stand to be a little more adventurous in their design, but there will always be a place for well-cut, restrained, decent quality clothes.
They also now have a separate alcove in the back just for denim. Though most of the clothes do go on sale (and this is the time to strike without mercy), the raw jeans never do, so don't bother waiting. The raw black or blue are now about 180ish and even though the prices have risen steadily, they're worth it. I don't think much of the New Cure fit (super tight up top but barely tapers? who does that look good on?) but I think few body types won't be served by either the New or Petit Standards. My own PS's just had their first birthday (with cake and everything) and are still going strong, with only minor problem wear. -

A girl can dream, can't she? A.P.C.'s one of my favorite labels out there. The most amazing, beautiful sweaters and denim but with my retail salary I won't be shopping here anytime soon. The store is very well kept, racks stocked but not packed, with their impeccable garments and the sales people aren't constantly hovering over you, which I appreciate. Weirdly, the floor boards are uneven, which can be an issue for someone as klutzy as me.

I love this place! i've been coming here since my very first steps on NY ground. the jeans are awesome and surely last the wears of time. I've bought a few coats that are still in great condition. Sometimes the staff can have a "too cool for school" vibe which I guess is appropriate when selling imported clothes....? nonetheless great place!

I frankly don't understand all the positive reviews of the jeans. I feel they must be written by people that work there. Everyone I know complains of the quality and stopped buying them.
The jeans look fine, they completely fall apart just about the time the jeans are starting to look/fit perfect. The sales people practically insist that you buy them way too small and never wash them. What they don't tell you is that this is also a surefire recipe for rapid deterioration. The reason they fade and crease so satisfactorily is because the denim is cheap and damages quickly. Those creases and fades are actually weaknesses in the fabric.
If you insist on buying them, you might consider washing them occasionally and/or not buying them super tight (the stretching also stresses the denim). But if you're going to spend that kind of money, why not just buy better quality jeans.
I had holes after 2 months, took them in, and they snootily told me it was normal wear. REALLY? Because my $40 wranglers still don't have holes and they're 4 years old. After a year and multiple repairs, the entire crotch of my APCs finally gave out making them unwearable and unfixable.
And perhaps worst of all is their attitude - as if the customer should be so grateful to have access at $180 a pair ($215+ if you include repair costs). Again, they look cool, but it's all superficial. What ever happened to quality? -

I am a firm believer that if you want to invest in clothing, then invest in well-made basics and classics that will go with everything. No better place to shop for such items than at A.P.C.
A.P.C. stands for Atelier de Production et Creation, and you really do feel as if you're shopping for items that were thoughtfully and artfully created at some atelier.
One of my favorites in New York.
(Warning: Watch out for the uneven hardwood floors. Some of the planks are unbalanced; every time I've come here, I've semi-tripped ;)) -

Jean or Jennifer, please pardon my english (I am Israeli) if you're reading this please fire the long-haired tall gaunt guy that works in your APC Specials store (Perry St, in West Village)! What a rude douche bag this guy was to me! He was on the store's phone or his cell phone the whole time I was in there!
I picked up 2 pairs of New Standards and had my credit card in my hands ready to check out, when I asked him about the return terms. He said no returns while still on the phone! I could not believe he did not get off the phone for a customer. I said forget it and left.
His tone was disrespectful, his whole vibe was ungracious - perhaps he thinks he is the owner. Believe me, I shop quite a lot and I understand/recognize a good atmosphere and fair customer service. This man working in your store @ Perry St just isn't right for your store or it's customers. I am sure you have received other complaints about him. Please do the right thing.
The store in soho is excellent! I love everything about it there so good job with that! -

I bought a pair of jeans in August and wore them about 3 times a week. About a month and half later I had three large holes in the crotch and the seaming was also coming undone. I went to the SoHo store to exchange them. Christine? the manager, was very unfriendly and highly unhelpful. She kept telling me that they could patch them for me. I told her I didn't pay close to $200 for a pair of jeans to have the crotch wear out in a month and a half. After getting absolutely nowhere with Christine, I emailed the corporate offices twice. Three months later, I have yet to hear back. I also posted a message on their company facebook page which was promptly deleted the next morning with no attempt at contacting me for a resolution. Shame on you as a high-end brand who is supposedly supposed to offer both fantastic quality and customer service. You fail on every level regarding customer service and satisfaction. Learn to stand by your brand.

The clothing is boring, but it's really well made. It's kind of like L.L. Bean but with skinnier pants. I feel like if you wear a lot of this stuff people can look at you and tell immediately that you are a graphic designer. They all have that boring basics classic preppy plaid details khaki tidy-lumberjack nice woolens and 100% cotton but better fitted sort of a French Pendleton thing going on right now. Yaaawnnnnn I prefer more drama in my outfit usually thank you.
BUT. I love one of their candles. It is green and the scent is called Toumbac. It is the only thing from A.P.C. that I have ever loved, and I LOVE it. So a return customer shall I be.
*Also - I always end up referring my short, skinny, masculine friends here when they are at a loss for pants. For menswear-styled trousers that fit short skinny people, this is THE place. -

I get it... A.P.C is minimalist chic. But somehow, I find it a bit too minimal. It verges on slightly boring. I like my clothes with a bit more detail (darts, style lines...etc)
However, it must be said that A.P.C uses fine fabrics (especially wools) and the garments are constructed well. When the store goes on sale for 30-50% off, the price is pretty reasonable for the quality you get.
It's just a shame that my body isn't the same as their fit model :( I think I'm too much of a stick to wear A.P.C. I tried on a couple shirts and coats that looked potentially cute on the hanger. But on my body, it was just ok. I'm not paying $$$ prices to look "just ok." I saw a girl try on a "shelock holmes" type of jacket that I also tried on. It looked waaaay better on her, probably cause she had the meat to fill out the clothes.
So yeah... I think A.P.C can be cute if you have the body type for it. But if you're on any extreme (either fat or skinny) it aint for you. :/Listed in: Born to Shop

The best pair of jeans I have ever worn.
I had heard APC mentioned in fashion-insider articles as a go-to staple, the way Tom Ford wears a blazer and Michael Kors a spray-on tan, but the clothes are hard to find. Recently in New York, I walked past the store and had to stop in. The clothes are at first deceiving. Basics with subtle details, luxe fabrics, and most importantly, killer fit.
And then I found the jean whisperer. I wish I knew her name, but somehow the lady in the back denim room got me into a 29 and I haven't taken them off since. They are molding to my bony ass, look great with boots and boat shoes, at work or on the floor.
Impeccable service and killer jeans. Without a logo. -

You want clean, effortless chic sans banality? A.P.C.
You want the perfect outfit for that patio seat at La Closerie des Lilas, Gitanes Blondes in one hand and Syllogismes de l'amertume in another? A.P.C.
You feel the need to dismissively pull on your lapels when an acquantaince heralds Sarko as the saviour of France and you'd like the perfect blazer for the occasion? A.P.C.
When I first heard of A.P.C. years ago and saw their aesthetic, I thought they were a socialist design collective. After all, their clothes border on the spartan, are free of frou-frou, and have military aspirations. And some of the t-shirts have politicized logos. So of course I had to visit. Then I glanced at the price tag on a coat. KA-CHING! Socialist my ass. Lenin is rolling over in his grave.
I second Michael S.H., Andrew N. and others on the raw denim. My bony ass looks bootylicious in new cure. Great store. Great atelier.
That being said, I'm still bitter at A.P.C. for putting their second magasin general in WeHo of all places and not SF. Fucking Gauls. You can't tell me those muscle-bound starfuckers, meth sluts, and pornstars deserve A.P.C. more than the brooding queer commies in SF. -

In my dream world, I would eat duck confit and oysters every day and never go broke and never get fat. My apartment would be bigger than an average suburban bathroom. I would have a good hair day at least once a week. I would not sweat when I jog and my mascara would never run. I would be able to afford Louboutin's and THEN (get this!) I would actually be able to walk in them without wincing in pain or breaking my leg. I would be able to sing like Charlotte Gainsbourg and act like Maggie Gyllenhaal. Oh and I would look cute in APC clothes.
APC sort of embodies that effortless chic that some women have and others (myself for instance) dream about. The fit is slim, the shapes are simple and the cuts are so anti-sexy that they are sexy. There is a huge preponderance of cotton and a refreshing derth of spandex, sequins, and all things complicated. Yes... there are a lot of things in my dream world. And APC is one of them. -

Oh, A.P.C, how I need to lose about 50lbs to fit into your jeans. Even the ones in my size. I never thought I was waify and/or French enough to pull off (read: fit into) any of these clothes, so I was content to admire their simple, chic, styling from afar (and vow never to eat again). I also convinced myself that it was just a little too pricey for my basics (and that I was a Fat American and didn't deserve them - sue me, I have issues).
Then I went to their mega-sale this summer determined to find something, anything that fit. I literally tried on everything in the store. Like EVERYTHING. Most things, shock, were cut too slim in the shoulders. And the legs/waist? Don't even get me started.
But then there it was: shining like a black cotton beacon on the rack. My beautiful A.P.C jacket - at 30% off! Actually it might be a sweater - to be honest, I'm still not sure. But what I do know is that it gets me compliments every time I wear it, and it's become my signature piece this fall. It remains my only item from A.P.C., and I love it. I'll definitely be back - even though I'm still working on the 50lbs.Listed in: The Shopping List

Nicely tailored basic styles. I bought a stripey shirt here (no not a cheesy stripey, trust me you'll like it). Before my recent trip to APC I had all of 2 button downs in my closet. Pathetic, I know!
Everything is pretty fitted, so if you're a skinny dude like myself and you like something in more of a European style and cut, I'd suggest you drop in. The location is convenient since it's in the heart of SoHo. -

Note to self: Can't fit into A.P.C. clothing with South Korean speed skater buffalo butt and Bolo Yeung shoulders.

Review from Jen D.
A.P.C. clothing is simple and beautiful. Great dresses, slim fitting denim. I love the whole "undone" look that their clothing portrays.
The store is also such eye candy for me. Simple design, gorgeous chunky unstained hardwood flooring. Pleasant staff as well.
Girls just be careful. Heels like to get stuck in the floors at this store. -

Actual phone conversation:
Scott: Hello?
Fashionista Friend: Hey Scott, it's [___]. Someone I work with told me there's a huge sale going on at A.P.C. Something like 30% - 50% off.
Scott: Oh yeah? On everything?
Fashionisata Friend: I think pretty much everything. I'm going later to check if they're discounting these cute sandals I had my eye on.
Scott: Sounds great, but I don't have time to go down to A.P.C. today. I'm getting out of the office at 1 o'clock and I want to get home early. We're going out east first thing in the morning.
Fashionista Friend: Oh...too bad. I know how much you love that store.
Scott: Yeah. They really do have nice casual men's stuff...but, I SERIOUSLY can't today. Thanks. Besides, I don't have the energy, need or desire to randomly blow a couple of hundred bucks just 'cause there's a sale.
Fashionista Friend: Hahaha...
Actual conversation in A.P.C. hour and a half later:
Salesperson-bot at the register: Your total comes to $167.78 [polo shirt, v-neck sweater]
Scott: Err...okay, thanks.
Morals of this story:
1. Never take calls from fashionistas when sales are going on at A.P.C.
2. Make sure you always have a solid alibi when the AMEX bill comes
3. As much as you love the stuff you bought from A.P.C., learn from your mistakes (or not). -
Review from Myko L.
Los Angeles, CA
Effortlessly chic & beautifully constructed - that pretty much sums up A.P.C.'s distinctly Parisian style. Some have told me that A.P.C. is over rated and over priced...but if you care for pieces that are of quality construction that will last you more than one season, this is the place to go. I also love how there's no blatant branding splattered over the pieces... down with branding!
The store is also beautifully styled and effortless. There's a very fresh feeling when shopping here and there's always a piece or two that I must have. No good for the bank account!
We felt the service to be quite good. No pressure but definitely helpful.
Finally, let's all learn to say the name.....(it's a long story with a lot of confusion....so, let's just save ourselves some hassle and get the name right once and for all!)
A - as in father
P - as in paper
C - as in ceiling -

[ review redone on 11/6/2007 ]
Oh my wonderous days of struting around SoHo on my day off, and of course, me being me, I MUST make a stop at A.P.C. Its perhaps one of my most favorite places to shop in New York if I had to vote. A.P.C. is basically my favorite label when it comes to denim. Next to A.P.C. on that list which comes close is Rag & Bone.
A.P.C. is located on Mercer St, almost neighboring the recently opened 3.1 Philip Lim boutique. A.P.C.'s exterior is a simplistically wooden, painted in a poppin' blue color, which deems it incredibly hard to miss. Lets not forget the big flag hanging off the building that screams "A.P.C."
A.P.C.'s interior is a definite favorite of mine. Very rough, ragged wooden plank floors which scream "be careful if in heels." Lucky me I need not worry about that, although my dress shoes have taken a pounding when clumsily walking around. The walls are a plain white, and straight towards the back of the store are the ceiling tall curtained fitting rooms. The store in itself is split in two sections, the left being menswear and the right being womens. The racks are positioned in certain ways toward the middle that allow you to access both sides of the racks. If you delve further to the right of the store, past the fitting room, there will lie a seperated section of the store featuring books, pins, tee shirts, and A.P.C.'s signature raw denim.
Fall/Winter 2007 A.P.C. features plaid dress shirts, cashmere/cotton blended denim, military inspired coats, bamboo/wool cardigans & sweaters, signature slim fitting suits, corduroys in teal, black and purple/blue, & leather shearling bombers. Also accessory wise, you'll be able to find shearling lined boots, leather gloves, wool neck warmers, wool hats, horsehide belts, and bags.
It's just one of those places in my opinion that need to exist in this world. A basic brandless label, with a minimalistic approach, quality in every stitch and impeccable fitting clothing for all the slimmies out there such as myself. Now if only I could just live there...Listed in: Born to Shop, My Notable Reviews

Ze Pros:
APC has a very clean aesthetic, and a certain cut that you don't find in other design houses. Their women's line is consistently classy, too.
Ze Cons:
Unless you are a little tiny French person (or any other small-stature'd nationality) dont bother trying anything on. I am 6'6" and everything is way too short. Average length for APC dress shirts come up to my forearm. Jeans? They cut off at the mid-calf. If you are on the taller side (esp. 6'2" and up), APC will not be your place. Sorry. -

Always intrigued by the clothing and accessories here, I went to the store as always and last walked out with some of their dry denim. Just looking to break them in now as I am on my 3rd week.
That aside, they always have some classic styles that never seem to quit. A great place for those who are looking for cuts that are less "American"... A favorite of Japanese shoppers.Listed in: Look and Dress like Naoya

The store's interior is much like the clothes it houses - minimal and clean yet fabulous. Although the jeans have risen in price after the recent popularity of raw denim, you still can't find slim, raw denim of a higher quality at it's pricerange.
For those with an understated, minimal style, APC is a must. Some might question the price point, but APC's attention to detail and quality make the clothes worth the price.
APC has a big sale(usually at the end of the year) where almost everything is 30-50% off. -

so i finally went to this a.p.c. and it was very different from what i thought it would be. Although there werent tons of clothes on the display, the clothes that they had on display were all very classy and nice. the jeans didnt quite fit me, one size to loose, the next to tight, the frocks were adorable, even though at my 5' 8", some were a little long on me.
The clothing can be worn by people who are not stick thin, but average sized like moi, which is a real plus cause the whole hourglass figure is rarely appreciated in fashion.
The staff was not to snotty and i really aprreciated that. They actually looked remotly happy, something phenomenal in the world of fashion boutiques.
the interior was really nice too, and i loved the music
yes it was pricy but it was worth it. -

Oh, A.P.C., je t'aime, mais tu es tres cher...
Love, love, love the European styles and cuts, but in this economy, I'm not ready to pay close to $300 for a sweater, however cute it is. Sadly, I have my limits.
Some of the salespeople are a bit on the snotty side, which is one of my biggest pet peeves (get over yourselves!! it's not like you personally designed the clothes or are super rich to buy anything you want in the store!). And it's definitely not a store for those of you who compulsively buy, then ponder your purchase at home, and then return it (sale items are final, and regularly-priced items are store credit only). But other than that, I always stop by here when I'm in the neighborhood to check out the goods. I'm eagerly waiting for their spring/summer collection! -

Update: it happened again so I'm taking a star off. I order through their online store (which ships from NY). I received an email that my order went through. Then nothing. I called the NY store. They said it's sold out. I "should have received an email notifying me". I didn't. They're just not on top of their inventory, and their customer service is really lacking.
I have several items from the store. The cut of their jackets are exceptional. Narrow, clean, and well-tailored. The pants are for girls without any hips. Otherwise they are not cut to flatter- if you have a flat butt it will accentuate that, if you have a big bootie you probably won't fit in any of their pants.
Their online sales are priced very reasonably, so as soon as I receive an email announcing their sale I jump on their site. But beware that for online purchases in the U.S., chances are many of the items will be sold out (goes VERY quickly), or the staff in the NY office who are handling the online sales are really disorganized and stupid about processing these orders.
I ordered a trench coat that was on sale online, and waited for a while to get a confirmation that it was shipped. When I finally didn't hear anything for 2 weeks, I called the NY store and a dumb-sounding employee told me that it had sold out. I asked him why my order went through, then, online, and he said something about how it may have been "simultaneously" purchased at the store, and therefore not stocked anymore. Right. More like their inventory and processing is a mess. And on top of that no email to say it's out of stock? Really bad customer service (at least, online). -

I'm ambivalent about APC. On the one hand, I love their raw jeans. The new standard is relatively affordable and a good value - especially compare to all the "mall" brands - and it's the jeans that most straight leg cuts were patterned after. On the other hand, the quality has deteriorated and the price has crept up in recent years...particularly after the NYT ran a story on them in the Style section. Cloth-wise, APC doesn't always jump at you, but the basics are well-made, if slightly boxy.
Final verdict: I will always have a pair of APC NS in my closet, but will only buy non-jeans stuff twice a year during their sale. -

Review from John D.

Many women have asked me about jeans, and to be totally honest, I know next to nothing about women's jeans. Well, I do know that 99.99% of womens jeans manufacturers incorporate varying degrees of stretch/lycra in the fabric which unfortunately for you the consumer (but fortunate for the manufacturers and retailers) is why womens jeans seldom last longer than a year.
So girls, you have two options:
(1) fly to Paris to get a pair of APC hipster or new cure jeans.
(2) What? You don't got the miles? Do not fret, there are actually 2 shops in North America (SoHo NYC & WeHo LA).
What makes APC womens jeans so unique is that they are made from the very same premium rigid cotton that many of the finest mens jeans are made from. The jeans are raw/unwashed, which may be a little scary at first for some of you due to its deep rich indigo hue and very stiff feel due to the singeing process post-sanforization (sorry, I have to drop at least a few technical terms here).
But after several wears, what you are left with are a pair of jeans that will last you 5, 10, maybe 15 years that will wear in beautifully and fit like a second skin. Not since the designer jean revolution of the late 70s have women been offered such true high quality denim. It's pretty cool to think that this is one of the few products for non-lazy people who have the patience to watch their jeans develop into beautiful long-wearing pieces of apparel... instead of just buying some "worn-in" looking jeans that will be neglected in less than a dozen months.
Now onto APC mens jeans. Yes, they are very similar quality to the womens line, but mens jeans of this quality are far more common. Not to mention that within 4 blocks of this store you can find some of the finest jeans in the world (at Blue In Green and 45rpm), so it's not quite a fair comparison.
The rest of the store is hit or miss. Casual basics, pretty easy to wear, nothing too out of the ordinary.
But for all the ladies: take a gander around, talk to the salesfolks and get fitted in a pair of APC raw denim jeans. At $155 per pair, it probably isn't the craziest price you've probably spent on clothing, nevermind jeans, but in my opinion, a worthwhile wardrobe investment. -

I enjoy the simplicity and modern lines of A.P.C. Very service-friendly and knowledgeable about their jeans. Funny enough, I usually just like some occasional pieces to mix and match with other daring pieces. So, I usually like to purchase my A.P.C. where I can have fun mixing and matching and blurring the lines a bit. However, this is a great shop for purists looking for a fix.

Great clothes. Outstanding fit and quality fabric. However, whack denim. Save yourself the trouble and hit up Self Edge. If you're already spending $200, might as well reach for the top of the shelf and get Japanese selvedge denim. Flat Head and Iron Heart jeans destroys APC.

The cuts are amazingly clean and flattering and definitely worth the money (the fabrics and seams won't give out after countless wearings). The end of season sales are also wonderful (usually about 40-50% off). Just be careful on those floors; even in flats I manage to stumble over the same hole every time I'm there (the one by the left racks on the women's side).

Yay, I am a fan for their design. But sadly I can only be a FAN. Their cut are not for me... if you are c+ cup and short 5'2 like me.... their clothes are not for you. Their cut are for long legs, long arms, skinny people. But I have to give an extra star for nice store & friendly staff.

Great store to shop for basics. Most of the clothes are minimal but seem to transcend trends from season to season. I bought a cardigan made of soy here recently and it is the softest thing I've ever touched! I love the rustic wooden floors in the store and the dressing rooms are huge.
