if you're looking for a place to stay that is a little more home-y (in a good way) but aren't into 80s floral decor typical of most b&bs, the metro hotel is the place. french themed, but not overtly cheesy. a hotel without being a hotel, it's very comfortable and relatively affordable for the area. they are located halfway between beautiful point reyes and wine country. they offer a variety of rooms and suites as well as an airstream.
feels like a b&b, but unlike a b&b, they don't serve complimentary breakfast, which was fine, since we found an excellent breakfast at the team room cafe not far from the hotel. they do have complimentary coffee to get you going in the morning. it doesn't look very big from the outside, but there seem to be no shortage of rooms. perks include free wifi, parking in their lot with direct access, and clawfoot tubs in most rooms. oh, and if you're lucky, your room may come with a cool goose lamp. they allow self-check in if you arrive after 8pm.
This is a delightful place to stay in Petaluma. Our total cost was $109 for a night, and we had a little table and patio outside the room. The hotel had a continental feel, without being pretentious. We had a large digital cable TV in the room, and the place was within walking distance of many restaurants in town. Free drip coffee in the morning. Check-in was easy, and we hardly saw anyone else, although we were there in the middle of the week. We enjoyed our stay very much.
This place oozes with charm. We've stayed 3 times for various Sonoma weddings and it is the cutest and one of the least expensive places you will find anywhere near wine country. The whole place is eye candy -- the use of cheery color, fun art and decor, and other creative touches that are like a little bit of France.
Most rooms are ~ $100/night and they have other cool options like suites and an airstream trailer.
Perfect for low-maintenance people who don't like cookie-cutter hotels, and who appreciate quirky charm. Not for high-maintenance people who require a lot of attention or service during their stay.
We have friends who live in Petaluma. Both times we've visited we have stayed here. Both times each stay was impromptu (that's how it usually works with us) and we made reservations the day before arrival. Last stay we were in the last room available in the back of the main house downstairs. It was cute, charming, clean and quiet. Overall a very pleasant stay.
Recently (I think) they've added an Airstream trailer as one of the bookable rooms. Again, we made our reservations last minute so our only choice was between the Airstream and a 2-double room. I thought it would be fun to stay in the trailer so I booked it.
One thing I love about Metro Hotel is the late arrival check-in is so easy and they have a convenient system. After staying at other Inns and B&B's and having terrible after hours arrival experiences, I really appreciate that they are so organized and it's been flawless each time. If you're arriving late they give you a door code and leave keys/directions for you. Again, it's always been detailed and flawless. Unlike the time in Bodega Bay...I won't bore you with that horrible adventure.
The Airstream was fun for one night. If I was staying for a week, I would definitely consider a standard room with a shower where I don't have to straddle a toilet. Also, we are 2 medium size people who know each other well. I would not suggest a new couple who may have privacy concerns or 2 people both larger than 6 feet stay in the Airstream. The website pics make it seem larger than it actually is. It was nice to have the kitchenette for late night oatmeal/snacking. Overall it was really fun and novel which is the main reason we love staying here. A room is a room at the chain hotel down the street, but an Airstream is not.

We loved our stay at The Metro this weekend. It is very comfortable & casual. The decor is playful & colorful. My only criticism would be the lack of water pressure in the shower and the fluctuating water temperature. The town of Petaluma is cute and has a European feel like the hotel. The Metro takes their French concept all the way right down to selling postcards from France in the lobby. We stayed here because the Sonoma hotels were very booked & expensive for the NASCAR race that weekend. We will likely stay there again.
utterly charming and absolutely perfect for the occasion!
the services here are minimal - you almost don't even see any of the staff...
so if you want to just escape and have a nicely decorated room with a goose by your bedside and a comfy mattress and cozy down comforter - this is the place.
As for the "Cafe" - there's a nice seating area near the kitchen... which is never used... and they have coffee available in the mornings... that's about it... they allow you to store your food in their fridge... so i guess you can bring your own breakfast? I asked... the cafe has never been open for business - but it sure looks like it could be a great place for a croissant or some crepes or a croque monsieur.
everything i loved about this place is exactly why i despise chains/corporate lodgings... it had personality, individuality & a quirkiness about it.
I'm not so sure about staying in the Airstream - sounds fun for a night - but not for more than that.
Free wireless internet was a nice bonus... If i ever come to petaluma again - i would want to stay here!

I loved this place.
I had seen it when driving to the freeway from my mom's house but finally decided to stay when I had a weekend vacation.
Easy online reservations, helpful staff, great decor and setup, and the room was super clean and cozy. Free wireless and a flat screen made for easy entertainment and I would definitely come here again.

I just stayed here this weekend, and it is perfect for what we were looking for. A romantic, relaxing weekend. It feels like you are staying at the house of a friend with really good taste. The room was on the small side, but it had a lot of charm. I have stayed at inns in Carmel at double the price that make you feel like you're at a crappy motel. This is a special, feel good place. It is also very close to Downtown Petaluma, with cute restaurants and shopping around. The town of Sonoma is not too far either, but if you are planning to visit several wineries, Petaluma can be a little far from the wineries in the Northern area of the county. Again, not a bad thing if you enjoy scenic drives like me.
I always know I'm in the right place when the majority of guests are European... they seem to be experts in finding cute, reasonable, funky places to stay. My wife and I stayed here for one night in their Airstream Bambi trailer for $110... too cute. Very clean, friendly staff, free wireless, and great location. If you go, stay in the Bambi... it is a great conversation starter!
The Metro Hotel was a really pleasant surprise. My husband works in Petaluma, and we decided to crash here after his office holiday party. We loved all the funky decor, the streamlined service, and the adorable white cat who visited us in the middle of the night (but hey, we're cat people). Seriously clean and cozy - and the bed was really comfy. Minus one star because it was a bit noisy in the morning (which may not have been the hotel's fault, not sure), but otherwise a great find; I would definitely come back.

Very charming place. 50s French and shabby chic, very eccentric. It was like taking a short vacation in Europe. If you are in the main building, the staircase is steep. Coffee & tea provided in the morning though muffins are nothing special. Compact but extremely comfortable. There are also accommodations separate from main building. Parking provided. 15 minute walk from downtown.
