I love Mary, I love what she does to my hair, and I love her pricing.

She's a truly excellent stylist who often does wacky things to her own hair but won't pressure you into doing the same if you're the fearful type (I am the fearful type). She always remembers the latest in your personal relationship-drama and is eager to hear the next installment while she snips away, and she saves all her hair clippings to donate to an organization that uses hair to sop up oil after oil spills. Basically if you don't use Mary as your stylist you're letting poor little sea otters die horrible deaths. Do the right thing, people.

I've never once had anything but a gorgeous haircut from her, and when I say "maybe just a few inches off" she actually only takes a few inches off, unlike some stylists I could name, who evidently use some cracked out Martian version of the metric system and wind up giving me a cut too short to put in a ponytail.

She can also knock back a drink like no one's business, but only after hours. She does wield hot irons, after all.

I don't live in Boulder, CO anymore. I live across the country in Asheville, NC. And yet, Mary is my only stylist. This gets pricey in plane fare, but really, need I say more? Since early 2007, Master Stylist, Mary Owens has had my cut and color down to a science - and as a human being, I happen to adore her. Not just incredibly talented, but an extremely good heart. If like me, you find that your lapses between appointments are just a little longer than you'd prefer, I do recommend Ombre highlights and a Brazilian Blowout. If like me - once upon a time, you didn't know what either of those treatments were, you should probably make an appointment and let Mary fill you in! Happy, happy hair experience!

Love Mary - she is a great stylist and a fun person to talk to while getting your hair done.  I moved here from Boston, and out of fear of getting a bad cut or color (I'm getting married this fall and if something went wrong I would be devastated!), waited about 6 months too long before finally committing to getting a hair cut (I had to ease myself in and make sure I was making the right decision).

I found Mary through google searches and Yelp! reviews and decided to give her a try.  She gave me a great, healthy cut and didn't do anything to scare me off.  She is very comfortable to be around and fun to chat with about lots of things, which helped make me very comfortable with my choice.

I went back a few weeks later for a full highlight and OMG she did the best color I think I've ever had - such great colors, great advice, and really great quality all around.  I'll admit, the price for a haircut is a little higher than I am used to, but I am so happy with her work that it does not make a bit of difference - you can bet I will be seeing her again soon, and I highly recommend her if you're looking for quality and skill!

I joined yelp to post this review for Mary, since I had such a great experience with her.

I was desperate to cut off most of my hair but didn't want to do it at one of the $15 places I normally go to.

I found Mary on Yelp...she squeezed me into her schedule the same day I contacted her (because I told her I was leaving town soon).

She was so much fun, and spent time talking to me about what I wanted. I wasn't sure, so she was great at helping me figure it out.

I let her cut off 12 inches!!! It was so much fun, with her fun attitude and I felt safe in her hands.

I got tons of compliments on my hairstyle, and it was exactly what I wanted: a short style that could be styled up if I was feeling punky or worn down to look mild-mannered if I had a job interview.

She gave me great advice on how to maintain the style; she even gave me some of her hairclips for my new short do.

She is a fantastically fun person and a talented hairstylist.

The only reason she didn't get a 5th star was because of her price: $50. It was definitely worth every dollar for my initial chop, but as a college student I just can't afford to go back to her every month or so. I wish I could!

If you are looking for a good haircut and even a fun time, then go to Mary!

    THANK GOD FOR JARRED!
Finally a stylist who knows how to do black hair!
I was frighteningly close to shaving my head when a friend recommended Jarred.  After years of driving to Colfax to find anyone who knows how to dry black hair (as in black people not color) let alone style it, I'd had my hair burned off too many times.  Needless to say, I am extraordinarily apprehensive about new people doing my hair.  Jarred not only put up with my crap, but made me feel a ton better.  He gave me the best haircut I have had in years and enabled me to keep my hair relaxer-free.
He has been trained on black hair, knows what he is doing with it, and best of all LISTENS.

Believe me if he can make my hair fabulous he can tackle anything!  He also does white hair just in case you are wondering.  As in white people not in color... although I am sure he would be happy to style your white-colored hair.  :)

Still amazing! Mary even managed to take dark brunette me to a fabulous blonde this summer! People don't even know I am not natural blonde-I guess the ditziness helps....some even have told me I have found my natural "roots"...
Oh well, I can take the blonde jokes because I have fantastic hair to toss over my shoulders as I laugh with them!

Miss Mary is a godsend.  She's been rocking my hair for the past several years and I truly have found my (hair) soulmate.  You ladies know what I mean:  you may find a stylist who is technically proficient but doesn't really "get" your hair - you get home and feel, meh.  Maybe even get out the scissors to make it more "you."  Not with Mary.  She is incredibly technically skilled (she is a color genius!) and she really, really GETS my hair.  If you're looking for a super funky, punky hair style, Mary has you covered.  (I've seen her do amazing traditional cuts too, but that's just not my style).  I'm so happy to have found a stylist that's willing to take me there!!!!

Now this may sound like exaggeration, but I pinky swear this is 100% bona fide: not more than 3 days in a row can go by without a perfect stranger stopping me with some version of "great hair." Right after it's been cut, and for months after.  Yup.  That's the power of Mary!

Mary Owens is Fabulous!!!!  It took me two years to find a good salon in Boulder, I kept putting off getting a hair cut until I went home, because I didn't want to risk it... and the I saw Alex's hair and I was so impressed I had to have Mary do mine.

The little salon is perfect, and accents Mary's style to a T. She is willing to work with you, to find the style that fits you best, and gives you options without making you feel obligated to take her suggestions. But trust me she knows her stuff!

Alex summed it up perfectly, it is a must!

Mary has been doing my hair since we were both living in LA. When I moved to New York I still went to her when I would go back to visit. After she moved to Colorado, I decided to suck it up and find a stylist in New York. How hard could it be in the most fashionable city in America?

In a year I went through 5 different stylists and 5 cuts that were OK but not great. After a lot of begging and listening to my complaining, I convinced Mary to make regular visits to New York to take care of my hair. Expensive for me, but well worth it.

Mary is incredibly talented, but so are a lot of stylists. What sets her apart is her ability to listen and get to know your personality, so that she'll know exactly what you want even if you don't. She cuts and colors my hair to match both my style moods and current trends, and her Brazilian Blowouts have upped the compliments I get  (you should see the disappointed looks when people find out my stylist lives all the way in Boulder and they can't just make an appointment).

You Colorado folks are way lucky to have Mary out there. My next goal is to convince her to move to New York permanently!

I decided to go to Mary about 2 months ago based on all the positive reviews I read on Yelp--I haven't found a hairstylist that I'm happy with yet, and I had really high hopes. I was shelling out a lot more than I normally would because I was about to go out of town to a family reunion and wanted to have a really good 'do. I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed.

The bad experience started when I got there.. she'd "squeezed someone in" ahead of me, and I had to wait a half hour before I could even sit down. (I understand there are emergencies, of course, but based on Mary R.'s review, it seems like this is a pretty common practice--she didn't even acknowledge I was there for that whole half hour, either.)

Mary is fun, I will absolutely agree with everyone else, but I felt like her fun crossed way over the line from 'fun' into 'completely unprofessional". Like how in the middle of my haircut, another client of hers walked in unannounced and they started gossiping about the size of a mutual acquaintance's penis. I was also pretty unimpressed with her appearance.. she hadn't bathed that day, for example, and her hair was a hot mess. Now, if I were already a regular client or if this were a cheaper haircut, I wouldn't have cared, but as a first-time client, it gave me a really bad impression.

All of that wouldn't have mattered to me at all if the haircut had been good, but it wasn't. I asked for a pixie, short but not masculine, wispy, with no blunt edges. She said she would do all of those things, and even joked about how she "would never ever give me a mannish haircut", and I thought we were on the same page.. and somehow I walked out of there with a really blunt, masculine haircut that didn't flatter my face in the slightest. The minute my girlfriend saw me, all she could say was ".. that wasn't what you wanted, was it." And she even managed to mess up the haircut that I didn't want--"oops, is it too short?" "Oh, too square? Haha, sorry, that was on purpose, but why would you want to look like Gumby?" "Oh, that piece is too short.. um.. here, let me give you this hairspray, it'll grow out, haha!" And then, even after admitting she'd messed it up, she still charged me full price! Then, she rushed me out of the salon and disappeared.

The one upside was that the haircut grew out well, like she said she would. And I freely admit I may have caught her on an off day. But I won't be back.
