I probably would have never come to this place if I hadn't been on foot looking for a close-by location to have lunch. It's small and unnoticeable. To my surprise, choosing to eat at the A market was more rewarding than expected. I had the "My Favorite" sandwich which included Turkey, delicately sliced and generously portioned Avocado and a delicious fruity sauce. I forget the fruits used, but the bread was toasted and the sandwich was larger than one you would typically make at home. Very interesting flavors.
The water! They have cucumber flavored water! What a great idea! It was so refreshing and it makes me wonder why more places do not serve this? There was also lemon/lime water available, but I could not resist the cucumber :)
My favorite part was eating their gourmet peanut butter cupcake. The frosting was not too heavy, very sweet and tasted just like peanut butter. The tiny peanut butter cookie topped it perfectly. The cake itself was moist and brought a smile to my face during every bite. I'll be back for sure. -

My favorite sandwich place in OC. Today, I had the Anti-Pasto Sandwich for the first time: salami, cappacola, mozzarella, Peppadews (kind of like bell pepper, but better and smoky with a little spice, but not hot), lettuce and Italian dressing. I had this with their Spiral pasta with sundried tomatoes, and pesto. I couldn't decide which I liked more, the sandwich or pasta. A perfect lunch. It was sooo good. Really wonderful.
My "regular" sandwich is the Cubano: ham and swiss served panini-style. Very delicious and comforting. Their salads are great as well, had the kale salad today... with vinagrette and parmesan. Lots of great flavor. Darling place to stay for lunch, too (cute cottage setting).1 Previous Review: Show all »

This is an excellent roadside spot which based on exterior appearance would cause one to drive by. I know I've barreled past this sport on the Pacific Coast Highway many times not realizing there's both a restaurant and a small deli/market next door.
We were told "you have to try this spot for lunch" and this time word of mouth got the job done.
This is a tiny little market, with a small wine section, a lot of food to go and a small restaurant. While I checked out the wines and to go food, we were here for lunch. The restaurant is a walk-up, order, give your name and they call you when it's ready. Only there's seating outside and this didn't work all that well.
The pulled pork sandwich was really delicious and served on fresh ciabatta bread. The Chinese chicken salad was also excellent. Iced Team comes in black or green and the espresso machine produced an excellent large latte with 4 shots!
The place does get packed about 1PM on a weekend. They were serving both breakfast and lunch items and sitting outside was a good call as it has that "OC feel" in terms of the crowd.
Food/Ambiance/Service all solid 4 stars. -

This is a real easy one for sandwiches
1. Ces Si Bon
2. Sprouts
3. Ruby's
4. A Market
Being a habitual sandwich seeker A's Market came in at the bottom of my list. Ironically, on my fourth time here, A's Market came in 4th place. The Sandwiches are dry and bland and I always have to "doctor" them up when I get home. This I consider to be an awful thing to do especially when your paying close to $10.00 bucks for a sandwich. Great packaging, nice box, nice service and a nice little bag, but I equate it to dating a really pretty girl and finding out after 4 dates, that she just is plain old boring when unwrapped. Sometimes, packaging and looks are important, but taste generally is more important to me. Plenty of beautiful people that I notice just sit and drink coffee - so, perhaps the coffee is good??? Won't be back....."Aaaaa". -

This is for the market side, not the restaurant...
Its California fresh with a Southern kinda feel.
This place is straight classy. The market is in the shape of a barn so you cant miss it from the street. Its entrance has a screen door which goes perfectly with the country farm theme.
As for the food, I've only tried the red velvet cake with raspberry filling and it was legit. They also have gourmet cheeses, cured meats, specialty wines, and hard to find sodas and beers. The items are a little pricey (the slice of cake was $5) but their items arent something you would normally find in your ordinary bakery/grocery.
If youre in the Newport area, I would recommend a drive-by (not the thug life kind). -

I've passed by A Market many times. I never gave it much thought. I read an article in the Orange Coast magazine about Shelly Register and the magic she makes in desserts.
As I was about to drive by, I decided to take a peek inside. I ended up getting a slice (huge layer cake) of her old fashion chocolate cake. To die for. I will never pass by A Market again without stopping for Shelly Register's sweet treats.
Also had a pulled pork sandwich and Orzo salad. So yummy.
If you love desserts, stop here. -

Very over priced. I ordered a Chinese chicken salad and 2 small caramel candies and it was $12.95, total rip off! This salad sounded so good from the menu online but is small( like a half size at any other restaurant) and bland. I wont be going back.

Great little spot for breakfast, lunch, or just coffee. Really well designed interior with bistro tables and wood benches. The food is really great...maybe a little overpriced but realize it's on PCH in Newport Beach and I'm willing to pay a little extra for the higher end experience. Love their breakfast panini! You can easily sit here for hours sipping coffee, reading a book, the newspaper, or a magazine from their newsstand. Classy joint!

The breakfast croissant with bacon is sooo good, but be prepared to get messy and a bit greasy, because the croissant is made of butter (albeit good) and I think they nuke instead of toast it, so it's a bit soft to handle. All That said, it's still incredible, and a great hangover breakfast.
The soups, sandwiches, and baked goods are amazing. It's not cheap.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Heck, try every dessert they have!!! We look far and wide for desserts this good and wow, we finally found it!!!
Yum, yum, yum the desserts may be bad for you but they feed your soul and put a smile on your face!
P.s. The patry chef, Shelly Register, is in this month's OrangeCoust magazing as one of the 5 first ladies of pastry in OC and I say she deserves the title -

I wanted to like this place so much more than I did. First off lets talk food since that is really the most important part. We went for breakfast and it was amazing. Ultra simple and delicious which breakfast should be. It was perfect food.
The ambiance made me wanna vomit. It had so much potential to be so so cute and hip and so many other things but it was just too much. The music was awful like AWFUL. I know it shouldn't matter what is playing but it does. This place is/was going for a look and the music is supposed to play a big part in that but it was a mix of shitty 90's music and then little hints of big band and jazz. The big band/jazz is what should of been playing the whole time. The place is cluttered as hell. I know it's a market but that doesn't mean you have to have crap. A few really unique pieces makes it way more special. I don't need 10 brands of stupid candles to choose from. Give me two local choices. It just needs to be simplified cause it could be one of the coolest places around. Also a tv really?? So so lame.
The treats looked UNREAL and I'm sure tasted great but sadly I only had the breakfast. I will be going back to give it a second chance since the food was great. -

YUM!!!
I'm always on the quest for a great Mocha. Theirs is great! Not overpoweringly sweet. I've had their breakfast before and remember it being good. Today however I only got the coffee. Worth the fact that I have to make a huge detour just to get back to going South on PCH.
They have sandwiches, cheeses and a huge wine cellar. I'll have to come back with the hubby and explore.
I did ask the hours since I cant seem to find them online. 6:30 am - 7 pm. She says the hours are always changing. Could be why they aren't online? -

In my ongoing attempt to find somewhere to have "afternoon chats" with biz associates and pals, I often choose A Market. You see, sitting in a Starbucks sucks. Why? Because after you are in there for 30 minutes you end up smelling like coffee for the rest of the day. And, to me, there is nothing worse than having my hair smell like coffee. SOOOOO...I choose here. It has a few tables, some light snacks and a selection of beverages that will make everyone happy.

This is the BEST place in Newport! If you haven't been here, you must. It's kind of pricey, but worth it. Shelly and team make the best breakfast, sandwiches/soups, and desserts. The seasonal catering menu, is awesome too. I can't speak highly enough about this place. If I could eat here everyday, I would!

A Market you are nothing but a B on my report card.
Your store makes me feel claustrophobic.
Your sandwich meat is a tad bit too salty.
Your flank steak salad was a big disappointment. I was expecting a hot piece of flank steak and all I received was chucks of cold fatty flank steak on a bed of salad. Unappetizing to my eyes and unsatisfying in my stomach.
But you did earn some points for the wide variety of drinks in your drinks display, food packaging presentation, yummy bread, and local company endorsements.
I've given you the reasons why you deserve a B so lets make some changes and pull that B to an A! -

My girlfriend and I were brought here to wait for our car to get serviced at MB Elite by the owner. It was a really cute place. They serve LAMILL Coffee which we love. (We go to the one in Silverlake all the time) We didn't eat anything except a muffin but that was really good. I would glance at other guests sandwiches and they looked amazing. I can't wait to try one next time we are in the area.
They have internet and outside seating. Its really chill to just hangout and read or surf the web, etc. It was really nice to have a cool place to wait for our car. They also have a good variety of domestic and imported beer, wines and booze.
Really liked this place and I also can't wait to try A-Restaurant next door which used to be The Arches back in 1925. I like this place has a lot of history to it.
Look forward to visiting again.... -

A Market caught my eye since it's on PCH, I stopped buy once to check it out. I was impressed that this small market had such a wide variety of wines, cheese, and other fine foods. I grabbed a drip coffee and a vanilla cupcake to go. The cashier was super friendly, and mentioned that the owner of the company bakes the cupcakes herself. I was impressed by the quality of both of my items. The cupcake was medium sized with an adorable swirl of pink icing on top. It had that dreamy, homemade quality.
I went back for lunch, tried MyFavorite Sandwich made of turkey, avocado, pear & ginger marmalade, and watercress on marbled corn rye bread. I wish I'd know it was made on rye, I would have requested something different. This sandwich unfortunately wasn't my favorite, although I think a bread I liked could have saved it. At least the rye was toasted and each ingredient was incredibly fresh. I actually liked the avocado, turkey, and marmalade flavor combo. I think if I go back, I'll try a salad (my friend's antipasto salad looked wonderful) or a hot sandwich.Listed in: An Addiction to Cupcakes, Caffeinated, Breakfast

this pretentious sandwich "boutique or parlor" has decent sandwiches but they are way OVERPRICED! i had to break a hamilton and some washingtons for a cubano. is it that much more different from the panera cubano? not very much. just because a market is ridiculously close to my work, i'd love to be a regular but the prices keep me far from it.

I need to write another update about AMarket. It is still a favorite place for breakfast and now lunch! I stopped in this weekend and ordered their BLTA (Bacon Lettuce Tomato and Avocado).
No need for sides, it was a huge sandwich. Although I'm sure they are made with as much TLC as my sandwich was. It was fantastic. My friend and I both ordered them and we were so excited and happy eating it that another group came in and ordered it too.
She also ordered one of their strawberry cupcakes. Comments like 'they use butter!!!" and "I can taste the strawberries!!" were shouted out in glee.
Thank you for doing the food you do A Market!Listed in: The Places I Go

This place is a little treasure. The decor is wonderful and welcoming, and I love the fact that they have plenty of newspapers to read. As far as the food goes, it is all high quality. The blueberry muffins are delicious, and full of blueberries. I also have been a long-time fan of their small ham and cheese baguette sandwich. It makes a great snack. Also, this place knows how to make a good latte. They are consistently good. For dessert, try the plain shortbread. So delicious! A fun neighborhood gathering place. My only criticism is that sometimes the service can be quite slow, but I have learned to wait patiently, and it's almost always worth it.

Hold on to your pants & panties, Californians. Albeit, amazing food, great service, and clean: there are some flaws.
-When busy: Can not handle traffic flow. It's not ready for it's success currently. No seats for people outside. Parking is limited.
-The rices/meatball dishes, etc. It's second hand leftovers from next door. Admitted to me today by the person ringing me up.
-Sandwiches: Good, but nothing too special. I think some of these kids have to get off the peninsula.
-Price: Speechless. Growing up in ny. I travel to their 5 times a year and spend a good time in the city. I also spend time in LA, Chi, Miami, etc. Unless I missed it and snuck in each time, and this is a kitchen for a private club, no gourmet food mart should cost this much.
3* for the food -

What a thrill to see the transformation of a tired liquor store into a charming must-visit neighborhood deli (albeit a gourmet version).
The A Market is an upscale deli and wine shop with plenty of charm and gourmet treats to take home. You can stop in for boxed lunches, artisan cheeses, charcuterie, groceries, wine and beer, and nostalgic glass bottle sodas from a bygone era.
The A Market prepares fresh hot and cold sandwiches, salads, and meals-to-go like chicken enchiladas and pot roast with your choice of side dishes. (Go for the mashed potatoes or sautéed broccolini).
You can't go wrong with their incredible BLTA--that's an applewood smoked bacon, arugula, tomato, avocado and mayo sandwich served on multi-grain pain de mie ($7.50); and Tim's (of Chef Tim Goodell's fame) favorite turkey sandwich with turkey avocado, pear, and ginger marmalade, honey mustard and watercress on marbled corn rye ($7.95).
Or try a Cubano sandwich with prime smoked meats, honey-cured ham, swiss, pickles, and mustard mayonnaise ($7.25); and The Spaniard, with chorizo soria, tetilla and piquillo peppers ($7.75).
Or just stick to the better things in life: sweets. Chef Shelly Register bakes to-die-for sour cream coffee cake, dried cranberry sconces, double chocolate espresso cookies, toffied brownies and much more.
Open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The food here is a bit foo-foo but pretty good. I recommend the BLT, which comes with avocado and is on non-toasted Rye bread. It doesn't sound like it would work but it actually does. That being said, it's like $9 and is about 1/4 the portion you'd get down the road at the Big Belly Deli.
I would have to order 2 or 3 of these to satisfy myself.
I guess if I was a typical Anorexic Newport Beach housewife with an insufferable toy dog I'd be in bulimic Heaven. The portions are TINY. The building itself is cool-looking inside - it feels like Edna's Edibles. Though I doubt you'd be seeing anyone resembling Tootie here! Sadly, the help seemed more on the affected new-money snob side of the Newport Beach service continuum.
Will I go back? Eh... I think I'd get more bang for my buck, and less attitude at Big Belly Deli. -

The "My Favorite" turkey sandwich is excellent. The pear-ginger relish on that sandwich adds a unique flavor and the sandwich comes with a little side of super thinly sliced sweet and sour pickle chips. I am not usually a person who likes pickles, but I couldn't get enough of these! I got my sandwich to-go and they put it in a really nice and sturdy to-go box.
They have a lot of other specialty food products scattered throughout the store, such as flavored fudge sauces, crackers, cheeses, wines, etc. They also have a nice selection of bottled sodas.
I look forward to going back and trying more pastries and other sandwiches! -
Review from Jenna B.
Here's an antiquated word that doesn't get tossed around my reviews very often: delightful. A Market is positively delightful. I stopped in to pick up some sandwiches after a long hike on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by the décor, the selection of goods, and the food. I really enjoyed the open feel of the interior with the kind of French/country/chic market ambiance. I happily perused their limited goods while my sandwiches were being made and I have decided this is going to be my stop for hostess gifts. Artfully boxed toffee, nicer wines, and fancy candles = things I would never buy for myself, but will happily give someone who is welcoming me into their home and feeding me.
Speaking of feeding me...I ordered "My Favorite" which is turkey with avocado, pear & ginger marmalade and honey mustard on rye. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to try a combination like that. Initially I was worried that the sandwich would be too sweet, but the honey mustard was either not honey mustard or is the spiciest honey mustard on the market. The spice of the mustard, with the creaminess of the avocado, the sweetness of the marmalade, and the earthiness of the rye made for quite the sensory sandwich experience and I loved every bite of it. I also tried the antipasto sandwich that has salami, hot cappacola, smoked-mozzarella, and peppadews. This sandwich packed some heat, but luckily the Italian dressing was sweet enough to balance it out. I also really dug the smoked-mozzarella, not something you see on a lot of sandwich menus. Portion sizes were perfect - not oversized and gut busting at all.
High quality sandwiches, cute little shop, a tantalizing dessert spread - I'll be back! -

I came into this restaurant with a friend for a bite after a long day of work. I really liked the decor inside. They have tons of different wines in a small room on the side of the market and they also have a refrigerated section that has beer, cold wine and some other assorted drinks. I saw a wide variety of really cool cheeses too.
I ordered the Fresh Mozzarella sandwich and the pasta salad. My friend had some kind of warm chicken sandwich and the potato salad. Our food came in a timely fashion and everything I tasted was absolutely top notch! I could tell all the ingredients were fresh and I could definitely taste all the love. Yes, this market is slightly pricey... but take a look around! You're in the middle of the NEWPS! Everything there is pricey. And if you're concerned about that then go eat in Orange or Santa Ana (I do all the time!) Once in a while I'm going to treat myself to a nice walk on the beach and a delicious sandwich at A-Market. The restaurant next door is on my list of places to try too. I'm definitely on my way to becoming a regular at this amazing, charming restaurant. -
