Great sandwiches at a very reasonable price. Recommend the meatball sandwich if you're feeling for something hearty and warm, and the Decadence if you're feeling for a fresh, veggie-filled sandwich. The 3-seeded bread is such a good complement to ANY sandwich. Trust. It is amazing, especially toasted.

Wonderful lady behind the counter who works hard to make delicious sandwiches.

This place is tiny and easy to overlook, but so worth hunting it down! My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch on a visit to Ocean Beach.

He got the pastrami sandwich and has not stopped talking about it since, and it's been couple weeks now! He said it was the best pastrami sandwich he ever had - it was huge, lots of cheese and meat, and the pastrami was amazing.

I got the veggie option - lots of onions, peppers and avocado - very yummy!

And the ladies working there were so sweet - we will definitely have to go back! I'd like to buy some meat or fish from them actually - they had a great selection.

A K Meats is A OK in my book. The first time I came here and got the meatball sandwich, which was good. I came here again yesterday and ordered the Roman sandwich, which I really enjoyed. The sandwich had plenty of meat and fillings. Sandwiches are also decently priced at around $6 each.

Parking can be hard around here, but the staff is nice and very hard working.

    My tummy gives A K Meats...4 Stars!

I had one of the main turkey sandwiches. It was loaded with a avocado and veggies and the taste was on par with Lou's Cafe which is saying a lot. The only thing keeping me from rating this 5 stars was that there were only two thin slices on turkey on the sandwich. For a $6.99 sandwich from a place called A K Meats, I would expect more meat.

I'll try one of the other sandwiches next time and update if I try something meatier.

The Korean lady behind the counter is super nice and sweet. I also like how they list off the types of bread for you to choose.

We got the decadence and the meatball sub. I kid you not--the meatball sub was the best I've ever had. It came out piping hot and made my soul sing. The decadence is a wonderful option for people who love avocado (they don't skimp!) and other vegetables. The bread was also perfectly toasted.

We were given a complimentary fruit salad and the fruit was really fresh! It was actually sweet and ripe, unlike the pre-packed ones you usually get at grocery stores. NICE.

    I'll be back, AK Meats.

There is nothing negative to say about AK. I am always enamored by the small proprietor who is satisfied by the level of excellence they personally achieve. a quite man, who you have to provoke for a response; the dynamic, precise woman who takes your order and executes like the crack of a whip.

But one caution: not a criticism just a requirement to consider:

NEVER make an adjustment to their pre-designed sandwiches; if you want custom, order custom.

it may seem that the woman's understanding of English is somewhat diminished: it is not. She is as precise in her communication as the menu structure provides a uniquely, yet varied, quick turn around for delights unique to AK.

I have called in orders and they were ready within minutes; place an order, walk out for another quick errand: the toasted option sandwiches are perfectly prepared and ready, warming atop the oven.

    She is a delight.

On rare occasion, I think to turn to AK for MEAT! I think it is the lack of expected parking on the street that deters me usually. But, when I am in for sandwiches I do take a look and ALL of their items appear fresh; cleanly-produced by their preferred vendors; a great assortment of fish, poultry, beef and pork; sausages; slices of delicious cheese for evening guests.

it is a remarkably clean experience and each item is displayed artfully, respecting the source of nutrition and the customer's likely concern whether or not such a small establishment could match the care of Whole Foods or Andronico's or other boutique grocers, such as Bi-Rite.

The years of establishment and the continuous level of care, service and quality needs to be praised.

For a few years my routine on Saturdays was to grab a sandwich from AK and walk over to China Beach to watch the waves and reflect and all that introspective bullshit.  Eventually I moved across the park to the Sunset and the routine came to an end.

My go-to sandwich is the roast beef and cheddar on a hoagie roll, but occasionally I get in touch with my roots and get the pastrami on rye.  All the sandwiches are really good, and there's something amazing about the vegetables here...they're always fresh and crisp and delicious and add a refreshing quality to the sandwich.

The pasta salad is also a must, though the wife isn't quite as enamored with it as I am.

As you've learned from the gazillion other reviews that mention it, the place was sold a few year's back and there was a slight dip quality.  I don't really think it was that big of a dip though, and it's still a great little neighborhood sandwich shop.  Plus, the owners are super duper nice and inviting.

I was there when AK opened. The original owners really new their stuff. It was so great to have a true organic meats shop in the neighborhood! Shame they sold the business.

Now, AK is less than mediocre, except for their pricing that stayed high. Current owners must cut corners or know nothing about quality, because the quality of meats and fish has gone down to the chain supermarket level.

I used to buy best prosciutto outside of Italy at this place (and I know what I'm talking about-I grew up in prosciutto land)... now, they carry some cut-rate smoked ham replacement, and they cut it about 1/8 of an inch thick. *With skin on*. When I ordered it, it was very clear that they've never handled prosciutto in their life. Anyone who knows anything about gourmet foods should be shuddering about now. Sigh.

Fresh tasty sandwiches served by the hardest working woman ever who is there 7 days a week, morning till evening and always greets you with a smile.  How can you not like this place?  Meats also always look clean and fresh (and organic) and even though I haven't bought them, I'm sure they are worth the price.

Give this place some business because this is the epitome of little places that need support over big chains run by people who don't care about their customers.  (although this is a "chain" it's individually owned and operated)

Try the decadence or pastrami for best first impressions!

I suffer from heartburn, and I have for many years.  My little brother says it's because I worry too much, and because I let things get to me.  I guess he got the Brer Rabbit zip-a-dee-do-dah gene, where as I got more of the Indiana Jones Temple of Doom gene. Neither of us were fathered by Walt Disney, Uncle Remus, or Steven Spielberg.  This is just how we turned out.

Anywhoo, I've tried year-long diets to see if I can cure my heartburn, which I have been told is merely a food allergy.  So April 2008 -  July 2009 was the year of No Gluten (and no dairy!).  I'm still not sure how I survived it.

What I AM sure about is that I moved to SF in July 2009, and after hauling a bed and a couch and a desk and a billion boxes full of shoes and cookware up stairs, and after figuring out busses and grocery stores and post offices, and after discovering my true love (Yelp) for the first time in this city that is so premised on eating, I'd had just about enough of breadless, cheeseless life.

    Enter AK Meats...

My very first meal back to the good life was an AK Hot Pastrami Sandwich. The bread was perfectly warm, crisp on the outside, and soft in the middle.  The swiss cheese melted delicately over salty slices of pastrami...

I'm not sure if it was my absence from the sandwich consumer market or what. But by god, the moment I took the first bite is a moment I will never forget. Kind of like moment that your log boat seems to linger, motionless, before dropping down Splash Mountain.  Kind of like the moment where Indy reeled me in with his whip for a kiss. Kind of like the moment I realized that a life without bread and cheese is not a life worth living.

The hot pastrami sandwich is quite tasty!

I was sick one day, but I badly in need of nourishment. I was craving something hot, something savory, something...that wasn't from my Costco-sized box of "ramen."

Anyways, I saw the reviews and heard good things about this place from friends, so I tried it out.

The hot pastrami sandwich is very very tasty. Everything from the nice flaky bread to the succulent meat was very very tasty. Overall, it was a fantastic sandwich, despite me being sick and not being able to taste very well.

I love this place! I was craving a deli sandwiched and decided to try out AK Meats. I created my own Roast Beef sandwich and it ended up being delicious! Everything was so fresh and I loved that the sandwich automatically came with green bell peppers, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onions! I added avocado and watched her cut a fresh one in half and slice it on. yummmm. Plus the woman at the counter was so sweet and friendly, she made me feel like a regular. I'll definitely be coming back for more.

The AK special. It is so special.
I know, I know. I'm being super ridiculous raving about a vegetarian sandwich at a MEAT market, but it is so good.

The other subs are also fantastic. I've had my share of sandwiches in my life but really, this place makes a mean one. Their salad is also very good and very fresh.

I've always been the type of person that has wanted the quintessential  sandwich spot in my neighborhood. I have found it.

    Fantastic Hot Pastrami Sandwich.

The Roma (Italian Sandwich) is very good on the French Roll. The meats are so fresh... it doesn't need lettuce or tomato.

Pizza Sub is ok...they use the heavy pepper red sauce from the Meatball Sub

    Cody approved!

Finally had a chance to try one of A K Meat's Hot Pastrami sandwiches.  Ordered it on rye (Like I once heard in a bar in NY when I tried to order a Long Beach instead of a Long Island...ya can't mess with tradition!).  Sandwich was a very reasonable $6.35 and with a bottle of Holistics Herbal Elixir (love those!), total came out to $9.35 or $9.65.  Not bad at all!

Actually ate the sandwich at the top of the stairs of Lincoln Park and watched the world go by as a long procession of BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, Acuras, and Volvos waited in queue for all the rich kids to be picked up from Burke school.

Sandwich was great, especially for the price.  Nice, thick cuts of delicious pastrami piled high with cheese on fresh rye bread.  The pastrami was a tiny bit tougher than I expected, but it could be because it was sliced so thick as opposed to super thin as I've been having lately.  Regardless, it was a wonderful, inexpensive lunch.  As I sat there eating the sandwich, people kept walking by with their dogs and all the animals were excited when they saw all that meat, especially a dog named Cody.  The owner was like, "No, Cody, no!!!"  LIke I said earlier, Cody approved!

Another delicious and memorable sandwich, conveniently located!

The woman working there is very fast and efficient (owner?)

Get the hot pastrami. My friend recommended the hot pastrami, but i decided to go with the combo which was ham turkey and roast beef.  3 meats vs. 1!! Gotta be a winner right?! But no, the hot pastrami was better!! Much more savory and fatty, full of flavor, for like 7-8 bucks. Don't think too hard, get the hot pastrami.

It would be helpful to have pictures of the different kinds of breads, it was a bit confusing picking which type of bread, but maybe thats just me, since I pretty much just know white, wheat and dutch crunch.

I often find myself fantasizing about eating a hot pastrami sandwich from AK Meats. The pastrami tastes like beef BACON. And yes, that's a good thing. Actually, it's an excellent thing.

For just 6 dollars, you get your choice of bread and so much pastrami that eating even half the sandwich in one sitting is challenging. I believe I ordered mine on a french roll? I don't quite remember, but the lady working there was really nice and shared her bread suggestion for each sandwich we ordered.

I also tried some of the meatball sandwich, which was topped with a special sauce of sauteed bell peppers, a nice change from your standard douse of marinara. Also excellent.

I'm heading to the Bay Area for a 1.5 day trip in a few weeks. I could care less about a clam chowder bowl from Fisherman's Wharf; Ghiradelli's can suck it. All I want is some beef bacon from A K Meats!

This review was inspired by Marti L. because of her review for AK SUB. Not sure if they're the same owners as A K Meats, but I remember going to A K Meats back in the days. It's only two blocks away from my house. Tasty sammies, yes they are!

One time, I caught the guy behind the counter putting my sammy together without any gloves on and he had a huge band-aid on his thumb. Without questions, I paid for the sammy, left and in turn gave it to my brother. He LOVED it.

The fiance and I decided to get cold style sandwiches as we've just finished spending the day in the sun at the beach nearby, but now I feel as if one of us should have opted for the Hot Pastrami as I read all these previous reviews that are singing the praises of it. Anyhow, we decided on the AK Decadence [turkey and all the fixings] and the AK Combo [roast beef with all the fixings] instead. Friendly service from the girls at the counter. Fresh sandwiches, made to order [although, we didn't really customize ours]. Sometimes, the original way is the best way. It was a wonderful, refreshing [late] lunch, indeed. We found ourselves wishing we had those sandwiches with us when we were at the beach. But next time we are in the area, this is where we will stop to get our beach-side munchies!

Great little neighborhood find and ooo-so-deelicious Hot Pastrami sandwich, just like the other Yelpers noted. Me happy!

Within 2 blocks of my apt, I've wondered why it took me so long to visit. Maybe it's because the store front is pretty small (blink and you may miss it), and is sometimes over-shadowed by PPQ next door and Shimo across the street. But...what a little gem AK Meats is!

Super clean and well-organized, this store is by no means a replacement for a full-set meat counter at your local grocery store. But I saw a wonderful array of what appears to be high-quality meats, poultry and fish products.

But I came here for the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, and also picked up a Tuna Melt (en route to enjoy a fabulously beautiful Saturday afternoon at Baker Beach). The lady at the counter was extremely friendly and made me feel very welcomed. She made each sandwich with attention and great care. You've GOT to try these sandwiches...the pastrami was piled on high with a great full flavor. The veggies in the Tuna Melt was fresh and crunchy. Total yumness!!

    I'll be back!

A K Meats is a great store/cafe. I came here twice to get a sandwich and every time the sandwich was exceptional. Today I tried out the Pastrami sandwich that people kept mentioning in their reviews. It was great. I am one of those guys who likes when there is lots of meat in the sandwich and for $6 sandwich it was a huge amount. I am also not an expert on what Pastrami is supposed to taste like, but this was awesome. Its like one of those Philly sandwiches I see on TV but never tried.

They also have very tasty looking and clean organic raw meats. I never bought any because its too expensive. But compared to organic meat prices I saw at supermarkets the price is very reasonable.

I wish they had chairs and tables that are lower. They have these tall tables that I always feel scared to sit on because I could fall or something.

    Anyway, check it out.

Newsflash:  The pastrami sandwich of your dreams (especially if they are East-Coast dreams) is hiding in plain sight in the Richmond!

I would never have stopped into AK Meats or actually noticed it if it had not been for some friends who live nearby.  We picked up sandwiches to eat on the beach and the pastrami was recommended to me - by an East-Coaster who is VERY particular about his pastrami.

It was every bit the tender tasty goodness that was promised, excellent on seeded bread with the works.  A half sandwhich is plenty filling - get a whole one if you plan to save half for later.

I'll be back to try more.  Any place that makes pastrami as good as this is A - o - K in my book!

I buy my meats here when I'm in the neighborhood.  The lady at the counter is friendly and helpful - I had never shopped for meats at a deli prior to visiting AK Meats.  The price per pound is actually less than that for meats at TJ's (which surprised me) and seem to be of higher quality.

They also have sandwiches which I assume are similar caliber to AK Subs in SOMA but haven't yet had one from this location.

I was on diet try to lose some weight.
I was trying to eat vegis, wild rice mixed with brown rice, sea weed, Natto, of course,  and "Kon-Nyaku".
Do you know what the "Kon-Nyaku" is?
It is look like a gooee gray color jelly made from J-kind potato.
I don't even know this is right to spell.
    Kon-Nyaku has ZERO calorie.
    I do love it .
But My boys & GF they all said, " This is taste like an eraser!"
I said, " Have you had an eraser?"
They said, " No, but taste like it."
I said, " How can you tell that taste like an eraser?"
    On and on,

    They don't understand.
    'Kon-Nyaku" is good for you.
    So as Natto.

I was just walking on Clement Street to get some lunch the other day.
    I found this place.
    The sign says "SUBS".
Something about this place, it looks like Fish & Meat Market.
    Cool Lookin'.
When I saw the sign, and the line of construction workers, I could not think anything else.
I got sudden hit by God.
I was walking into the store like a Zombie.
I forgot everything about my diet.
I ordered out loud, "Tony's Hot Pastrami, everything on it with seeded french roll" !
I don't know who the Fxxx is "Tony's" but that's what the menu said.

NICE TOASTED ROLL with HOT PASTRAMI....
    Hmmmm.
    I was in heaven.
    Fxxx the Kon-Nyaku.
    Fxxx Natto, for a while.
Don't bother me, I am really eating.

P.S. they have organic chicken, natural meats and wild fish.

Who would have known that AK Meats has good-sized sandwiches for less than $6. I had a vegetarian sandwich on a sweet french roll and was very satisfied with the freshness of the vegetables and bread. They also serve a variety of fresh deli meat sandwiches also for less than $6.

The lady at the cashier was full of smiles. My sandwich was ready to go in a quick 3 minutes.

AK Meats is a great little fresh meat and fish market. The quality of the meat is really environmentally conscious because it's all free-range and organic. You gotta love that!

A perfect place for grabbing lunch and picking up some fresh meat or fish for dinner.

More than just a tasty sandwich shop, AK Meats is a great source for good quality, natural, organic meats. And yes, those sandwiches are great and tasty also... Though my only complaint with that is that they do not have bacon! Why do they not serve up bacon as an extra additive!? I want bacon AND avocado on my sandwich, god damn it!  FYI: I'm very glutinous, therefore 1 star deduction! It's not easy pleasin' the Reet!

But like I said, AK Meats goes beyond being just your typical sandwich shop... They sell delicious meat! It's a fancy, but small butcher shop with a limited, but good selection of meats and seafood. The butchers are also extremely helpful! For instance, I went in with my boyfriend who was picking up chicken thighs and legs to deep fry for my birthday dinner (yes, my boyfriend truly is the best!). We ended up popping in right around closing time, so what they had out on display was even more limited. When my boyfriend asked for a few full chicken legs and thighs the butcher told him he would have to go in the back to cut up a new chicken... So instead of saying "no, what you see is what we have" type statement, he offered to cut up a new chicken for us... Yup, you won me over right there... You're so my new Falletti's butcher... But in the Outer Richmond!

Post scriptum: this is not going to be my everyday butcher because it is a bit price... But whenever there's a special occasion, I will definitely purchase a tasty, meaty treat from here! Sometimes the good things cost a bit more, but it's sooooo worth it.

This has been on my bookmark list since I read Vincent K.'s review. Finally decided to come get a sandwich so I won't have to starve at work til 10 at night! Parking was fairly easy at 130 and I snatched one up right in front.. There was another customer in there and that's it.. I thought it would be busier..

The menu was like any normal sandwich shops. Sandwich's, soups, salads.. They also sell sliced meats and chunks of cheeses!

I read a lot about the hot pastrami sandwich on yelp but I was thinking I wouldn't be eating it until later at night so why order that when it wouldn't even be hot anymore! I ordered the Chris's Combo ($6.19)- roast beef, turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onions, and bell pepper. You can choose having it hot or cold. Most of the sandwich prices are pretty reasonable.  While waiting, I was looking at the potato, fruit, and pasta salads. The pasta salad look really good.. So I just had to order a half pound of that. For $2, I got 3 bites.. Hmm pretty expensive for the pasta salad but it wasn't bad. Not like others where it's drenched with loads of mayo!

The sandwich just OK. I've definitely had better at Darby Dan's and Little Lucca. Where's the meat? I think I had like one slice each of the roast beef, turkey, and ham =( I like a meaty sandwich!

Do you know what that is?  If you don't, let me inform you: It is raw, ground beef with a variety of spices and egg, served on buttered toast.

Raw.  Beef.  As in: not cooked at all.

    *grin*

Well, you probably could have figured I'd like something like this, what with my love of sushi/sashimi and bloody rare mooing steaks.

The thing is: it's near impossible to find ground steak fresh enough to make steak tartar with.  It has to be, like, right off of the cow.  And, that cow can't be a cow which was grown for slaughter with all sorts of hormones, steroids, other-oids and ones... it has to be a natural, free range, hippy cow.  Well - a pre-1970 cow, anyhow - the cow doesn't need to reflect any sort of political ideology.  It just needs to be disease and drug free.

    Like my dates.

    (Oh I went there.)

Anyhow.  In this day and age it's next to impossible to find beef which fits those qualifications.  Beef that you use to make carpicho has to be of the same quality.  Because both dishes are RAW.  And, if there is anything wrong with the beef it will make you sick, potentially kill you.

    I like to live dangerously.

    I digress:

AK Meats (also owned by my nice landlord) has beef which is of the high, high quality that you can make steak tartar or carpicho with.  I know this because I'm eating some right now (*steak tartar) - mmmmm it's GOOD - and, also because my grandfather was a butcher and I know what to look for in a butcher shop to determine quality of product.

I am the granddaughter of a butcher and I'm proclaiming that AK Meats is top shelf.  For beef and everything else.

*AK Meats does not *sell* steak tartar, but they have the beef required for you to make it yourself.

EDIT:  AK Meats, not made from real AKs.

The meat and the fish all look really good. I didn't get any meat or fish though. I just looked at it.

I did have the turkey sandwich (called the 'decadence' or something like that which to me is just absurd because damned if I'm going to let some sign in a butcher shop in the outer richmond make me feel guilty about eating a turkey sandwich) and the potato salad. The salad was very good and the sandwich was reasonably good as well.

The service was friendly and acceptably fast. It's a good place to eat sandwiches or look at meat and fish.

It's with regret that I do this, but the last couple of times I've been there it just isn't the way it used to be since it was sold.  It's not bad, but the pastrami is a little blander and the 3-seed rolls are more like 2-seed rolls with a random extra seed here and there on the bread (2.5-seed rolls?).  The potato salad is more like a regular potato salad now too, so I probably won't get that again.  I guess this means I'll have to go to the original AK Subs again to give proper credit where it's due (it's been too long since I've gone there, otherwise I'd review it now).

Basically, it's still a decent pastrami sandwich, but definitely not one of the best I've ever had anymore.  Bummer. :(

Not the best sandwich, but definitely yum-worthy.  Made to order, fresh ingredients, etc., etc.  I have had better, which I find surprising given the praise that close friends have heaped on the place.  There just wasn't anything that made me moan... closer to a 3.5 stars than 4.

Would like to try the fresh meats at some point.

The sandwiches at A K Meats aren't as good as the ones from Sub Center...but they're pretty damn close.  And since A K Meats is walking distance, picking up sandwiches here is a no brainer.

For $6 you get a hearty sandwich.  Today I sampled the turkey and the pastrami sandwiches, both with a three seed bun.  The pastrami was especially fragrant, juicy, and delicious.  The turkey was also pretty good.

Considering this isn't even a sandwich shop, but a butcher shop, makes A K Meats pretty amazing.  I have a feeling I'm just crossing the tip of the iceberg with this review, I wouldn't be surprised that after a few visits, I'll have to bump this review up another star.

If you think this sandwich is joint is mediocre, you're an idiot.

Stick with the Hot Pastrami and get it with extra jalepenos, Also, don't forget to be nice to people that feed you.

Ok, not really.  Should be 4.  But I wanted to get your attention because I have a lot of criticisms.

First, briefly, the good.  No complaints about the meat, sandwiches are some of the best in the city (Pastrami, Rola's Roman, Die's Decadence, hell yes), some really awesome soups (corn chowder and scallop chowder what?!), and a lot of bang for your buck.

Complaints?  Fuck the salads.  The salads are a bunch of sandwich toppings with weak dressings.  Seriously, if they dumped that salad on the counter and ran a knife through it a couple times it would be a start.  what am I supposed to do with a whole onion slice with a 5" diameter?  If I tried to use a knife I guarantee you that huge slice of avocado would be all over my hands by the time I was done.

Fuck the potato and pasta salads too.  There's no reason for that much mayo.  It doesn't fit the style of the rest of your food.  If I was at a bbq joint I'd grin and bear it, but you serve sun-dried tomatoes in at least 2 of your 10 featured sandwiches.  No one here wants the mayo.  And get the fuck out of here with the apples/raisins in your potato salad.  It would be one thing if they weren't, to reiterate, drenched in mayo.

Last complaint is back when they did deliver we'd order like 3 times a week and they'd always act like we were such fuckers for patronizing their restaurant.  Like us spending $120 a week at AK was such a fucking disaster for them.  They'd take the phone off the hook half the time during delivery hours.  That was some weak shit.  I mean, more power to 'em for fighting the good fight and winning (they don't deliver anymore) but it was pretty weird to have to call up and be like "I don't wanna step on any toes here, but I'd like to order some sandwiches from your sandwich shop."

But anyways, the sandwiches are still, if nothing else, the best north of the park and west of Arguello.  That's the best sandwiches in like a 300 block area.  That's pretty good.

So three stars, but really four.  Give me one good salad, potato, pasta, lettuce, or otherwise, and I'll feel right about raising the rating.

So, at some point AK Meats switched owners and a happy Asian family is running the place now. They kept the same sandwich guys, so the sandwiches have suffered none in the transition.

The last couple of times I bought meat here, however, it didn't last longer than a day or two in the refrigerator. I used to buy our meats for the week from here, but if the chicken breast can't make it past Tuesday, then I have to go elsewhere.

    4.5 stars.

I love AK!  They have amazing sandwich's and fresh meats. They have high table and chairs to eat your food at outside and people watch on this busy Clement street.

The prices can be high but they have specials you can take advantage of. Service is friendly and very knowledgeable of all products carried.
