From a flat tire to transmission problems to an ill-tempered radiatior...A+ Japanese Auto Repair can do it all.  I have written several reviews for A+ over a span of 3 years and I wanted to provide another spin to my review.

I believe there is much to appreciate for this small business here in San Carlos.  They have a friendly and helpful staff.  They provide excellent service for my cars since 2006.  They even have a courtesy shuttle service that I have used many times. You have heard that many times in the various reviews they have here on Yelp.  Today, I want to share with you how great it is to work with a business that has integrity.

It is great to know that when I have car issues, I have a reliable auto repair business like A+ Japanese to take my car to.  I am in outside sales and I am on the road a lot.  It is important that my car is ready to hit the road everyday.  So there is a peace of mind knowing that the work A+ Japanese does on my cars will ensure that I'm not stuck on the side of the road or dealing with the same car problems over and over again.

There are a lot of great auto repairs shops in our areas.   So what I am suggesting is that if you have an auto repair shop that you like and trust, that is great.  If you don't, I highly recommend you give A+ Japanese Auto Repair a try.

I have a 2005 Prius, and my car started making a screeching sound (it's hard to put into words the sounds a car makes). I usually take my car to SF Toyota to have it serviced out of habit, but I decided to look around the peninsula for alternatives. After reading favorable reviews about A+ Japanese, I decided to take my car there to have it checked out.

Rob took great care of me when I arrived and sold me on letting them work on the car. The pricing was fair, and although I didn't have my car for an entire day, I respect that they provide a shuttle to take me to a nearby location and to pick me up when the car is ready.

I recommend A+ Japanese Auto Repair.

I have been a fan of A+ Japanese for 10 years! When I bring my car to A+ Japanese, I know I'm in good hands and that they will do right by me. After 10 years, I have serviced three of my vehicles with Eric and after picking up my car, I leave feeling worry free (always). The A+ team is knowledgable, provides honest diagnosis and has outstanding customer service. I am very pleased with their operation and appreciate everything they've done for me and my family. Last month, on his drive home, my husband had car trouble. He called A+ Japanese and he was able to bring in his car the same day, 30 mins prior to closing. Car was fixed and he arrived home safely. Adam, Danny says THANK YOU for your immediate attention and true generosity.

A+ Japanese, you truly are an example of perfection.

I'm a cute, petite girl who looks like a teenager and knows nothing about cars. When it comes to being taken advantage of by mechanics, I'm a sitting duck.

My Honda Civic was due for it's 65k checkup, and my dad was concerned about my automotive naivete being taken advantage of. He did some Googling and called A+ Japanese Auto Repair, and had a long talk with the owner, Rob. I brought in the car, and Rob gave it a thorough checkup and test drive, including checking the oil and fluids. Then he sat me down and told me everything I needed to know in an honest and non-condescending way. He said that my car was in great condition and didn't need any work at the moment. And he did all this FOR FREE.

I've been a loyal customer ever since. The service is cheerful and punctual and Rob has never tried to upsell me anything.

This shop had no knowledge of the problem my car was having and had the nerves to tell me that the smoke coming from my exhaust was because my LS400 had over 190k on it after I had paid them nearly $2500 worth of services... I did some research on the problem my car was having and found a solution on http://www.clublexus.com and brought my car to a different mechanic and whaddaya know my problem was fixed... Never trusting these people again.

I had my 2006 Mazda 3 serviced at the dealer for years, but grew unhappy with the customer service and prices. Based on reviews, I decided to try A+ Japanese. In sum, it was a great experience.

I was due for a regular service, but during inspection a few small problems were uncovered. The repair man called me right away, and sent me photos of the problems via email, which we went over on the phone. It was an effective way of making me understand that the nature of the defects and the repairs necessary.

I plan to make A+ Japanese my mechanic!

I came straight here with my bf after a car accident. Some turd took a quick left turn in front of my car and tried to blame me.

Anyway I was freaking out because there was this piece of metal that was scraping against my passenger wheel caused by the fact that I swerved during the accident to avoid direct contact. And when I drove at 15 miles per hr I could hear the metal making a carving indent sound to my wheel. And there's no way insurance would approve of damages at the time so I had no choice but to take to a shop and hope I get reimbursed. (took the guy two weeks to give his statement and he still denied it.)

When I got there (this was four months ago, I know late review but they deserve it) this young man looked at it and said he could help me saw off the fender that was scraping my wheel and meanwhile use zip locks to mount whatever is loose to hold my car together until insurance figures things out. I asked for a price thinking I'd at least cough up 150 but he simply said "You're already having a bad day, don't worry about it".

?!?!! I was not only relieved that I found a solution to still drive my car around for work and small errands, but also no charge?!? I was about to hand each of the men who helped a 20 (2 people helped) but the bf said no. I really should of though. But ! I'm taking my moms car here for some work next month so hopefully I can return the favor.

I highly recommend this place. They do the little things without asking for a huge check in return. We need more auto shops like A+.

These guys are the best and have all the service for my 3 vehicles (TL, RDX, and Accord) for life.  After having very negative experiences with Hopkins Acura, I went to an independent shop in Burlingame that was very good overall (Nicks).  But A+ is closer and is a full service shop that works with you to go a great job at a great value.  After getting my TL-S brakes done here last year, I was sold.  They found pads that were a significant saving over Acura pads, and gave me a very good labor quote (way better than Hopkins, and a little better than Nicks).

When they ran into a snag getting the lower priced pads, they got them from Acura but stuck to their quote, eating the difference (about $120 as I recall).  I didn't even have to ask, that's just how they do business.  Not only that, they are very friendly, knowledgeable, give you their attention no matter how busy they are, and follow up to make sure you are happy.  Unbelievable service and overall customer experience!  I am so lucky they are close by, but I would travel far if necessary to use them.  Definitely as good as it gets in auto repair, and I know what I am talking about!

I won't take my car anywhere else. I've been going to A+ for about 6 years now for my good ol' Camry. Whenever I have strayed there's been a regret. Either in lack of quality work or the cost or both. I appreciate how records are kept of my car to refer back to what has occurred in the past. This last time in, I thought my car was going to be totaled due to flooding of the carpets and some electrics. They went the extra mile to get it cleaned up and back in near perfect condition. Thank you Rob and Eric!

Great service here.  Brought my car there when I had to travel and did the late night drop off.  Rob explained everything to me in advance of the drop-off, called me to explain what was needed, what could be deferred and I picked the car up after I got home.

Solid work, seems reasonably priced and my car is happy.

As promised I took my 2000 Infiniti I30 for regular maintenance. The car has 116K miles on it and runs very well. This time Eric helped me with the service. I called A+ to schedule an appointment and find out what is needed. I thought I would need an oil change and nothing more. Eric did his homework and confirmed what I had suspected. I scheduled an appointment with Eric and took the car in the very next day. I reached A+ right around my appointment time (+- 5 min). Eric was courteous, prompt and very friendly. The car was in and out in about 30 minutes. The best part about the experience-- I did not have the service adviser or someone in the shop come out with a dirty filter asking it to be replaced. As you all know, this is something that happens at every 30 min quickie oil change shop. I had replaced my filter just a month or so back so I knew I will not need a new one so soon. A+ passed with flying colors. They also did not ask for the wiper to be changed-- another common ploy with the quick and easy shops. I had replaced the wipers with expensive Bosch ones about 2 weeks back so there was no need for a replacement (by the way the wipers are great!). Eric did recommend a few preventive repairs that I plan to get it done before the 120K service.

All in all, I am very happy with the service, and with Adam's comment to my previous post, I think I have found the shop to go to for my automotive repair needs. I hope the rest of you also have the same experience that I did.

I love A+! My gf and I wanted to start our own auto shop once after taking some classes and I must say that A+ is like the shop that we had imagined we would open.

They are a little on the pricier side but their service is amazing. They also get bonus points for the following:
    - Drop off service
    - Email notifications when the service is complete
    - Pictures of any services that need to be done (if they make any recommendations, they will provide a picture to show you why they think you shoud get that service)
    - Free car wash

What put the cherry on top was this: I took my car in for a 60k service and ended up changing my transmission fluid as well as fixing my brakes. A few days later, I started to notice this burnt smell so I called them back a bit concerned. They said that it could be a bit of the cleaning solution burning off (from when they cleaned out the transmission) but told me to go ahead and bring it in if I still smelled it a few days later. When I took it in, it turns out that the smell was coming from a plastic bag which had stuck to my exhaust and started to melt! They cleaned it up for me and didn't even charge me even though it ended up being something totally unrelated to my last service with them. Bravo! =)

We took our Japanese cars here for years on the recommendation of our Volvo mechanic.  A number of years back it appeared that management changed, and things went downhill from there.  Prices went up, lists of recommended services went up, smarminess went up, scheduling for auto return became unreliable, and the quality of service went down (they missed some things they'd claimed to have fixed).

We no longer take our cars here.  Found a small, inexpensive, reliable, thorough and honest mechanic.

Last week I took a used Honda that I wanted to buy to A+ for an inspection.  I can not begin to tell you haow happy I was with the service that I received.  The technician that looked at the car (Rob was his name) called me a few hours after I dropped it off to tell me his findings and offer his opinion.  He informed me that the car was a salvaged title and that if I bought it I would not be allowed to re-sell it because a salvage title can only transfer owners twice(it had already happened once).  He also said the body work they did was some of the worst he had seen and did not trust the cars durability.  In addition he found a major water leak in the trunk.

With my permission he took the car to a local body shop for a second opinion(this was all done as a courtesy free of charge).  The body shop confirmed his earlier concerns and reccomended that I stay away from the car.  This extra service went above and beyond anything I ever expected.  Not to mention the level of professionalism he used through out the process.  In the end despite the fact that if I bought the car they would get all the work that had to be done on it they reccomended that I not buy the car.  Now that is honesty not found to often in the auto industry.  When given the option of making money or doing right by their customers they chose the high ground and protected me before their bank account.  This is a detail that I will NOT forget.

As if this was not a great enough experience as it was,  the owner(Eric) personally approved a discount on the inspection.  This was surely not needed but greatly appreciated.  While I listened to the advice given and did not purchase the car, I will be sure that in the future any car I do have will only be serviced by A+.  Thank you guys for a little bit of honesty and profesionalism in an otherwise dirty industry!

Brought my Prius in for 100K maintenance and had a specific list of things I knew needed to be done and checked.  When Rob called back with the report they had tacked on a very long list of questionable service items that I was pretty sure I didn't need.  The most over-the-top was a throttle body cleaning, which quick web research indicates is usually a rip-off:

Unbelievable!!! No joke. From the initial phone call to signing the bill I was utterly amazed. Never have I experienced service and professionalism from a auto repair shop like this.

First, I called last minute to ask if I could get my car in (then my own schedule changed) but had to change. Eric made the change with short notice, alerted his staff and when I arrived they were expecting me.

Once in the lobby I was hoping I could hire their front desk staff. They were cheerful, knowledgeable and more than willing to serve. I had some work to do but could not get online. Rob asked if I wanted a ride to the Starbucks just 1/2 mile down the road. I said sure.

In just under 2 minutes a younger guy was opening a door to a prius (earth conscious as well) and driving me to Starbucks!

They said I would get a call when ready and come back to get me. Before I got the call I received an email with pictures of the job with all the items they wanted to discuss and the prius was back to get me.

    A-Z these guys are amazing.

The high bit: free rental car from them cost me $400.

In general, their work seems good, though almost all visits have come to more than $500.

My complaint is more with their ethics.

My car was here for 20+ days.  Partly it was the insurance co's fault, partly b/c A plus went slowly.  In any case, when I came in they stated they would give me a rental to use, so I wasn't very pushy about the delay.  It turns out they gave me the car "free" since they were assuming the insurance was going to pay for the rental.  The insurance co didn't.  They then called and said I had to pay $400 for the car but they would graciously pay for $200.  They were surprised I was expecting them to pick up the entire bill.

I've had other issues where they state something that changes later, especially about when a job will be finished.

If you go here, get them to be very clear and explicit about anything involving time or money.

I was in town to start a new job and had car problems.  I had no idea who to call and just picked the closest car repair and hit the jackpot.
Rob at A+ was so helpful and when my emergency road assistance proved to be useless, Rob sent a mechanic over to my hotel.  It's not fun to be in a new location and have car problems.  I'm sold on A+ and while in the area will certainly rely upon A+ Auto Repair; they  went way beyond any expectations.

I very much disagree with previous fluff reviews.

Based on the recommendations i decided to take my old honda that is losing power to have it diagnosed.  Right away they indicate it will be $125 to diagnose and inspect the car.  It appears that's the going price for all their customers, because i noticed someone else had the same invoice.

They were suppose to call me by 1pm... never happened, i called at 2pm to ask what's going on, they had not looked at my car and said they'd call me back.  At 2:45pm i get a call that they found a problem with a cracked master cyclinder and could not continue.   I'm not a mechanic, but i know that has nothing to do with the power issue.

my analysis of what happened... they decided not to properly diagnose the problem would take longer then they would be willing to investigate for the $125 and so instead did a 10 minute inspection.   after that in order to justify the $110 they finally charged me, they did a voltage check on the battery and inspect a few belts, etc...

it was nice they had a curteosy shuttle service.

would i go back?  probably not, i would prefer a mechanic that would be honest to me, instead of building a case to justify their business model.

Hmmm..some people either seem to love A+ or not. I think they are a great place to get your japanese car serviced. I own a Nissan Maxima that I have taken there several times.. each time I felt like they were honest and reasonably priced. But honestly what do I know? They could tell me my flux capacitor needed to be replaced and I would agree to the service. (Yes, that was a Back to the Future reference. What can I say, I'm old.)

I really like their shuttle service and their friendly attitude too. As long as I have a japanese car, I will take it to A+.

Yet again yelp *steered* me in the right direction.

I desperately needed my brakes checked out. Since I've never had my car worked on in the bay area I was in search of a reliable shop.
Location, reputation and convenience were at the top of my list. I lucked out and got all three at A+.

I called to make an appt and expected to wait at least a few days to get in. Nope, they got me in the next morning. I was even chauffeured to the train station so I could get to work on time. After a little TLC my rolla was good to go the same day.

Shot out to Rob and Steve, thanks guys! I appreciate their honesty. It's comforting knowing that I can return for future repairs and rest assure that it will be well worth my time and money.

I decided to try A plus out based on the reviews.  My experience was not so good with them.

First, I asked them so a general car inspection.  My car has nearly 120K miles on it, so I knew that I had to do some work for the 120k service.  For some of the items that I knew that I needed, I even brought the parts from the dealer.

For the items that I asked them to do, their work was only OK.  For the radiator flush, they did an OK job.  For the tranny flush, I asked them to flush through 12 quarts of tranny fluid.  But they only did a drain and refill and charged me over $100 to do it.  What?  It's less than 1/2 hours work and I even provided the fluid.

I brought in a fuel filter for them to replace and they did that, but charged me over $100 to unscrew a filter and screw it back in.. Again, slightly disappointed.  I've changed fuel filters in the past and it's never taken over 1/2 an hour with the right tools/experience.

During the inspection, they said that my rear axle carrier bushings were worn out.  they tried to find just the replacement bushing, but couldn't find the correct part.  So they said the entire axle carrier would need to be replaced at a cost of around $900.. yikes!

Well, i found the replacement bushing and did it myself in about 3 hours.  The bushings were about $50 and if I was a shop, I could have done the replacement in about an hour.

They also said my front brake lines were cracked and needed to be replaced.  Not sure if this is true since I took my car to custom alignment, a place that specializes in brakes, and they said that yes, there were some hairline cracks, but the hoses weren't to the point of replacement yet.  For hairline cracks issues, it's hard to say who is right or not, but I would have appreciated a more objective opinion from A plus about it.

All in all, i thought the service was below average to average.  My experience wasn't good enough to go back in the future.

Based on the great reviews here and at the Car Talk (NPR show) forum recommendations for A Plus Japanese Auto, I took my Tacoma in for it's 150k mile service.

I appreciate that they suggested starting with the basics - oil change and a full inspection (est. $100) before just going through with a plan that my truck may not have needed.   For comparison - Toyota101 wanted $300 just to start doing the 150k service.

Besides this price difference, their quoted service prices were less than what I have been quoted at Toyota101.  Not shockingly less, but hey, every penny counts.

Added plus - for the past few months, my truck has been making a funny ticking noise when driving.  Toyota101 was neither able to diagnose or repair the problem.  I mentioned it to Rob when dropping the truck off.  They didn't go searching for it, general vehicle maintenance took care of the problem.  Which makes me wonder what Toyota101 has been doing with my truck for all these tune ups and inspections.

I made the appointment a week in advance of bringing the truck in.  The shop was busy, and I got my truck back the next morning.  If there is anything negative to say about this facility is that they take a bit more time.  A high class problem, really.  (not much of a problem at all!)

This shop is family owned and operated, it's nice to keep money in the community.  They also go to lengths to recycle and run a green business, a huge plus.

The service techs took digital pictures of anything of concern for my vehicle.  I LOVED this.  Rather than just being told "you need a transmission flush" I was shown *why* I need a transmission flush.  This gives great piece of mind - no one wants to wonder if they are being had!  When I picked my truck up the front desk men took the time to explain what had been found, and what had been done.

The service is professional and beyond courteous - they are kind.  I will definitely be returning to A Plus.

My wife and I bring our 2004 Acura MDX to A+ regularly.  We also used to bring a Honda Civic that we sold.

These guys are honest, and fair with their pricing.  They offer great customer service and stand by their work.  They did some repairs on our Honda Civic and a year later we discovered that one of the parts they replaced was faulty.  They replaced it under warranty and everything was great.  They stand by their work!

I fully trust the team at A+.

Thanks Yelpers - I can't agree more with your high rating for A Plus Japanese Auto Repair!

Jay and Rob are awesome. They call from time to time to let you know what they are doing with your car in an informative and non-overbearing manner. They are educators and will explain things to your satisfaction. They won't be offended (actually very understanding) if you get a second opinion (of which the other place told me was reasonable).

They will help you save money. Rob kept calling my dealership and spent alot of time to try to figure out what is under my warranty. Ultimately, we determined that certain things are under warranty. they encouraged me to save me almost $200 by going to the dealership rather than to fix it themselves. When my final price was quoted, I was shocked but Rob helped me trim down the list of to-dos and explained what was absolutely necessary and what I can wait on for next time. Also, my tires are $200 each (expensive!) so Rob called around to find comparable quality tires at  about $130 which saved me enough to rationalize a new pair of shoes.

They also gave me a rental car for free. Maybe it's calculated in the cost of service, but the price seems reasonable and they are very trustworthy.

Oh - and they even washed my car as a bonus. Given, it was only half my car, but that made me half happy which is a plus over my typical miserable state.

This place has all the works: E-mail appointment notifications, txt message reminders, pictures of problem spots sent to your inbox, discussion of probable causes, courtesy rides, and more. This place is wired up the yin-yang with great service...

... so maybe that's why they gave me a quote that was considerably more expensive than my personal mechanic. They price much higher than other shops. I know my vehicles. I'm not an expert, but I know how things work and how to repair most things and what it would take. For engine mounts and brake hoses, they quoted me $1000. This should not take more than $600-$700. This did not include the initial $85 inspection fee and a 10% company discount.

So why come here if my personal mechanic could do it for me cheaper? Convenience. I needed this checked out asap, and my mechanic would not have had the time to sit with me to take a look at the problem. Service added an extra star here.

    Domo arigato Japanese Auto.........

I drive a ten year old Ford Mustang.

The engine light came on and while I was resigned to send my little pony off to the glue factory, I stumbled upon this gem.

They were nice to me and they fixed her in a day.  Hi-ho silver and away!

I came here for my 150K mile service on my truck, and since I rather not go to a dealer for such work I thought I'd give this place a shot based on the positive reviews here on Yelp.

I thought they were very professional and very courteous.  They have a shuttle service (a Prius) so they can take you home and pick you up.  They are very thorough in their inspections and are not pushy in any sort of way.  Honesty, how about that?!

I will say in terms of price, I would say they are cheaper than a dealer but probably not by much (10-20% I would say?).  At some point I will need a new timing belt, etc, A Plus told me it would be about $1100 but I also called another repair place I have bookmarked here on Yelp with great reviews and they quoted me about $800.  So just FYI.

I've been going to this place for years now. It's never a fun position to be in, like the last time I went in about a week ago, when your car is broken into.

These guys took me that day with a reasonable quote and were able to shuttle me back and forth to work throughout the window repair.

It's such peace of mind to be able depend on a local business. It's worth a shot to take your car here (I've had successful repairs for both my VW and Honda) for a thorough service. Reasonably priced. Strong, local business.

This place will fix your car but their prices are high for independent mechanics, cheaper than the dealer but not a bargain.

Took my car in and they diagnosed and fixed the problem. Why only three stars, because the recommended repairs that were not necessary. If you know what needs to be replaced with your Japanese car take it here. If you are the type of person who is not quite sure about the workings of your car and will replace whatever the mechanic says, go elsewhere.

Super service.  I had taken my car in for servicing about three weeks back.  They told me a whole laundry list of items that needs to be fixed.  I wasn't prepared to spend that much, so they helped me understand what needs to get done vs what could wait until the next visit.  They even took photographs and sent them to me at work to help show me what some of the problems were!

Then, just this last week, I was driving on the freeway and the "check engine" light came on.  Took the car back in, they did a bunch of quick tests, just to find out that I didn't tighten the gas cap enough when I filled up the day before.  I felt like an idiot, but they didn't charge me a dime and even called me again a few days later to make sure there weren't any other issues.  Great follow up!

A + Japanese was 5 stars all around. I called for an appointment Friday morning and got an appointment Monday, since they are not open on weekends. Rob, who is the service manager was very nice, described everything to me in detail. He went over the list and pricing with me and the best part was he called me at work and emailed me the pictures of all the repairs they needed to do and  described everything! Now that's pretty amazing, especially to a person who knows nothing about cars.

As a woman, I felt very comfortable with Rob and the staff feeling like they were not there to take advantage of the situation but to help fix the problem. And the price was pretty reasonable.

I would definitely go back again and share this fantastic place with family and friends. Oh, and my car is running like a dream again.

Took my  2008 RX 350 for 50K check up.  Rob found a leak in the rack & pinion steering.  He called Lexus and found that it was still under warranty and told me to go back to Lexus to get the work done.  He sent me pictures and told me how to handle this problem.  I took it back to Lexus (who were very nice) and they are installing a whole new rack & pinion steering.
Thank you Rob for saving us lots of grief and money.

This is the first repair shop that I actually feel good about bringing my car into for repairs.
I brought my 2002 Acura mdx with 120K miles knowing that it needed a new transmission and a good service.  They were honest, proactive and extremely nice to do business with.  I would have paid far more going to Acura directly and would have been treated poorly at best.
Their follow up was great as they called me the next day to make sure everything was to my satisfaction.  The car runs like new and I could not have asked for better service
