Get the mortadella samich with gorgonzola spread and provolone on toasted focaccia, yummmm...wash it down with chinotto.

They also have good quality chesses and packaged Italian goods( arborio rice and marzano tomatos in cans).

Prosciuttio and Mozzarella sandwich - sandwich had one tiny piece of mozzarella and was on top of pretty wretched tasting foccacia (essentially thick bleached flour white bread, yuck!). I also think the tomato was pretty low quality (perhaps frozen from the previous day?).

For $11.99 I would expect better quality. MUCH better options downtown.

Picture this: After almost 24 hours of travel you land, finally, in San Francisco and make your way from the airport to your hotel. You've never been to San Francisco and the streets are as a foreign to you as the thought of giving up coffee. It isn't too late but you're tired, it is cold and it is starting to get dark.

Your tummy rumbles and if it were a person it'd be a two-year old toddler stamping its feet, hitting the walls demanding it be fed and fed now. You concede and decide that it is time for dinner. Of course, you could order room service but to be honest the thought of paying the price of a small nation for a measly cheeseburger and chips doesn't appease the demanding toddler within your rumbling belly. Instead you reason that a walk will do you good and you set out to find something suitable for dinner.

Exhausted you see A.G Ferrari Foods close by your hotel and their warmly lit deli lures you in with the promise of fresh foods and gourmet delights. You're not disappointed as you order a roast turkey and salad foccacia which is humongous for less than $10. You also figure you've earned a treat and take home a slice of their flourless chocolate torte (Ok. That's a lie. You reason that you could get hit by an oncoming tram on the way back to the hotel and eat the torte on the walk home to make sure you don't miss out on its cocoa-goodness).

A.G Ferrari Foods, you were my first meal after landing in San Francisco and you impressed me. I'll be back again and please, please have that flourless chocolate torte waiting.

Hungry and the best way to get to know my new work hood is through food. First time I came in I tried their mozzarella, tomato and pesto sandwich just yum.

This time tried something different of course busy but staff always accommodating and took my order when I was ready. I ordered their turkey sandwich with green salad and this really good red sauce which was delicious on fresh focaccia bread. Paired with kale salad which was really good of course I also bought chips (really hungry). All in all, great sandwich and salad and will be back to try more of their sandwiches. They also have other specialty food, don't get me started I want to buy everything, advice do not come in when you are hungry you might end up buying the entire store.

Delicious. Prosciutto, evoo and fresh mozzarella on focaccia, yes please. And the portions are large, half a sandwich is usually good for me. They come with a fresh green salad but I usually substitute it for the East West Salad (mung bean and millet with a sweet and spicy dressing and dried currents) I think they gave it to me once by mistake... now I ask for it! What a happy accident.

They also have a nice selection of Italian grocery items, wine, deli, pasta, olive bar, sweets, cannoli shells etc.

The staff is always very nice, but make sure you remember to grab a number (otherwise they may pass you up!)

Great spot to grab a quick lunch.

A.G. Ferrari is so close to work that it took me a year to go there. I haven't been to any other location, and from the looks of the place from the outside, it's not apparent that they have a sandwich counter (and there aren't crowds at lunch, either).

I've stopped by twice in the past week to try two pork sandwiches, and both were delicious. The latter, covered with truffle butter, was awesome.

The portions aren't particularly large, but you do get a very small side (which varies, I most recently got a chickpea saladish dish which I ate in about four bites).

Service is quick, and the prices are reasonable for the neighborhood. I'd be back if I needed a quick sandwich. The arrays of meats and cheeses also looked impressive, but pricey.

I made a glorious discovery yesterday. I accidentally stumbled upon what will now become my habitual $3 lunch.

That's right: $3 of hearty sustenance in SOMA. Squeeeeeal!

The discovery came as a result of AG's uninspiring deli case, forcing me to take comfort in their minestrone soup. And what good fortune! The soup was near perfection: thick broth, the kind that's been stewing all morning, chunky beans, diced veggies and a side of baguette. All for a meager $2.99. Take that, Whole Foods, you greedy six-dollar soup peddlers!

For some reason, this AG location doesn't have the same majestic bourgeois energy as, say, the one on College Ave in Berkeley, but the goods are the same: a small selection of Italian wines, a corner devoted to fancy cheese, cute packages of exotic snacks, and...the ever-dangerous, homemade flourless chocolate torte, which always stares me down at the check-out counter.

Staff is pretty friendly and keeps things moving quick during the SOMA lunch hustle. You can thank me for saving you all that soup money later! Or just buy me a chocolate torte and we'll call it even.

I'd walked by Ferrari's a hundred times before I decided to go in and give them a try. I had the Umbria sandwich, which is a thin-sliced pork loin with provolone and truffle butter (yes, truffle butter). The sandwich was toasted on their grill, and came with a side of decent (not awesome) ravioli in pesto sauce. The sandwich itself was delicious and filling, and I mean, they had me at truffle butter. My friend had the other pork loin sandwich, and quite enjoyed it.

(They have a check-in offer for "Free lunch with catering order" - kind of a weird check-in offer, but maybe it's driven a lot of catering orders. May I suggest something more man-on-the-street friendly?)

The lady at the checkout was super-friendly and by all appearances actually Italian, dropping grazies and pregos all over the place. I'll be back.

I just read last month that A.G. Ferrari had filed for bankruptcy and was about to close its doors before an angel investor swooped in and saved it. That would have been unfortunate since it's good to know a place that sells fresh pasta and all things edibly Italian. I say "know" because despite the fact that I've passed by this place hundreds of times, I had never actually stopped and bought anything here until I had lunch last week. Maybe it's the whole Dean & Deluca vibe. You just figure monied housewives with poodles must shop there. But I have to admit I think they have some good lunch specials if you don't mind staring at all their artisan cheeses and meats while you're eating.

I tried the $8.99 Farfalle Pasta with Chicken, which actually tasted like something that I could have made - and that's not a bad thing because I can make a mean pesto when so motivated. Of course, their pesto is probably made with artisan olive oil and artisan basil, which made it pretty tasty with the chicken and sun-dried tomatoes. What I particularly like is the abundant mixed green salad and huge crust of garlic bread you get with it (see photo). Pretty satisfying stuff for lunch. But did it motivate me to buy a $20 Panettone al Cioccolato or a $10 bag of Funghi Porcini Dessicati. Oh, probably not. But hey, at least it's there when I need to have a pretentious dinner party for people I need to suck up to.

FOOD - 4 stars...for lunch, it's a pretty good plate of Italiano mangia
    AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...upscale deli trappings
    SERVICE - 3.5 stars...they were nice enough
TOTAL - 4 stars...get your mangia on for lunch here

Although I pass by this location all the time, I hadn't had a chance to try AG Ferrari until recently when I was in need of something super quick and super close for lunch. I picked up their chicken Caesar salad, which I have to admit I blanched at when I saw the price... the size was really small and they were charging $7.99!

But once you get over the sticker shock I have to admit it was one of the best Caesars I've had in a while... The dressing wasn't that typical runny oily stuff you see with prepackaged salads, they separated the croutons so they didn't get soggy, and the chicken was a roast chicken and not that rubbery dry stuff they always stick in salads. It was so yummy!

There was plenty of other tempting stuff out as well, from prepared veggies and salads to more decadent looking things like lasagna. I like the idea of having this in my office area in case I feel like picking up some of their dry pasta and sauce and cooking up a little something that night (or picking up their prepared goods and pretending I cooked it myself!)

The last time I came here on a Saturday, the guy making the sandwiches was so rude! I've never seen him here before. He's Caucasian and maybe in his late 20's and has brown hair. They have this new thing where you order a sandwich and you get a free side. He didn't ask me what side I wanted and gave me some nasty pasta with an olive inside. It looked so unappetizing and smelled terrible. I didn't even eat it and just tossed it.

I bought 2 bags of biscotti. There were both the same size (6 oz.) but the chocolate one is $6.99 and the almond one was $4.59. There wasn't any prices on these. Had I known they were so pricey, I would have skipped on these. The chocolate bag was the last one in the basket. It was very close to its expiration date and it tasted waayyy past stale. The almond one was slightly better. These biscottis were HORRIBLE! Please pass on this!

I've been here a few times for a fast sandwich in between meetings. I probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends as a great place to nab lunch, but it's a passable joint. I like the selection of Italian cold cuts, the meat is properly sliced, the counters are clean, and the service is friendly
Each sandwich comes with a side salad and they don't ask what you want. Last time mine had salami and anchovies in olive paste?  Who gives that to customers hoping for repeat business?

This A. G. Ferrari location is 1/2 block from my office, so it makes a convenient lunch stop that I've started to come to fairly regularly.

Their panini sandwiches, particularly the grilled choices, are tasty and well prepared.  I'm a fan of the grilled tuna salad with olive tapenade.

I have walked by a few times when the line was a bit longer than I was willing to wait, but that is obviously a good sign.   The line does move pretty quickly and the service relatively prompt for the normal lunch hour rush.

I particularly appreciate the usual smile with their service and the way the co-workers seem to enjoy a laugh together to keep things on the lighter side.

Love the toscana sandwich- salame, red leaf lettuce, olive tapanade, and provolone (I think) on ciabatta bread.  Doesn't need the balsamic vinaigrette so I always order it without.  Peace and yummms!

This was a very happy find while yours truly was starving and sleepless at a comic book convention a couple of blocks away.

Imagine my joy to wander into this clean, delightful market (an upscale version of my beloved Santa Fe Importers in Long Beach) full of pastas and cheeses and breads and meats, and it's EMPTY. There were crowds next door, crowds at the mall food court, crowds in every other eatery in the Financial District, and of course crowds on top of crowds of people in the Moscone Center.

What a tremendous pleasure it was to sink one's teeth into mortadella tucked between slices of rosemary focaccia made by a sweet, older gentleman. My sandwich, which was big enough to tuck half away for later, and a canned soda came out to $9 and some change.

I would love to stop by again in the future if I'm ever in the area again.

All the workers there were quite nice. My friend walked in wearing a head-to-toe raccoon suit and they found it amusing and wanted to talk about Comic-Con.

This is one of my favorite places to eat lunch.  You can sit there (inside or out) and eat or just take it to go.

They have lots of different Italian sandwiches and all can be ordered grilled.  My favorite is the #18 with Prosciutto, although it is somewhat expensive at $11.

The staff has always been very friendly and helpful.

The only time to avoid this place is during a convention when you have to wait rather long to place your order.

I don't know what it is about AG Ferrari, but somehow amongst the litany of lunch options in the SOMA area, I seem to always forget these guys are here. Often times, I'll walk right by the little bugger on the way to get a sandwich at The Sentinel, only to realize that I could have shaved off an extra 4 blocks of my walk with a quick dip just steps from my office. I suppose the extra calories burned are pretty neato, but when the goal is to get a quick meal then return to my post in a jiffy, those extra 10 minutes saved could be very, very valuable.

There are more AGFs in the city than there are Subways, it seems, but for being a moderately large chain, they do a pretty stellar job of committing to a great product. From their tasty sandwiches to their buckets of homemade Italian sides and favorites, you surely won't be disappointed with any of their offerings. You might be disappointed in their prices, though, as it's a bit on the steep side.

Great cheese selection, which the friendly workers gladly help you navigate, taste, and choose from; scrumptious crackers and bread to pair them with; and incredible mortadella and salami in the general cured meats section. The olives also look amazing, although I haven't picked any up yet. The only possible setback is that it is definitely on the expensive side... though it's certainly not overpriced considering the quality of all of their ingredients.

I recommend treating yourself to some ciabatta and molinari salami snacks (which they sell at the front by the cashier) to gnaw on as you stroll through San Francisco on a sunny afternoon!

Oh man, this was the WORST sandwich I have ever had, even Subway is better, no wait, even the cold dead wraps at Starbucks are better. What are this people thinking?? I had the #1, chicken with something on focaccia. The focaccia was dry and flavorless, the cheese was so hard I thought it was cardboard, maybe it was? I find it hard to believe someone can make a sandwich this bad. I thought this was some sort of fancy schmancy place but I will never come back.

We had no comment, its not the most comforting Italian food. Not bad for a quick lunch. I bought the #18 Emilia Romagna with Prosciutto di Parma, Mozarella, Evoo, Read Leaf Lettuce, on grilled flatbread but I requested focaccia and to add tomatoes. They also give you a little side of coleslaw It came out to be $9.99. The staff was friendly and the sandwich was pretty good. A bit pricey, but might come back for the chocolate torte!

AG Ferrari was just another mediocre lunch place for me until I was introduced to... drum roll... the flourless chocolate torte! One bite of its warm melty goodness was all it took. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be thrown into the depths of hell though for partaking in this sinful indulgence. Or it will go straight to my thighs. I don't know which is worse.

Once I had consumed the flourless chocolate torte, everything else there seemed to taste that much better. My panini with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and pesto on a baguette just off of the grill was crunchy and delicious, and still good a few hours later.

I was also reminded of how good it is for the basics. Pick up a fresh baguette, a hunk o' cheese and a bottle of their house label prosecco to bring to your evening dinner party. Because, (wo)man cannot live on bread alone -- (s)he must have cheese and vino, too! Oh yeah, and chocolate torte.

AG Ferrari has great imports....I wish they were in more cities.
I ate here n the first night of my honeymoon while staying in the St Regis next door.  You know why?   Because I'm Italian, I'm a real man, and my wife does what I tell her to do.
It was well worth it....for a deli they have a great wine selection and more real Italian food then any place I've been to while growing up in Boston and NYC.
This is a great spot for a casual lunch or a fun, casual dinner with your wife.   If your wife or girlfriend doesn't want to eat here with you or understand why you need to eat here then get rid of her now before she ruins the rest of your life.  Don't let some dumb, cultureless broad turn you into a bland, waspy guy with no sac.

Sometimes, a blonde moment can pay off.

Today, I made the trek to the Yelp offices to meet with Nicole, who had a $100 gift certificate with my name on it- the spoils of having the "funniest" picture at the Pley photobooth (thanks handsy boyfriend).

While in the Yelp lobby, my homie Felicia came to say hello, and to ask me why I didn't just get my certificate from Nicole at the Pirate party tonight. Fantastic question... to which I had no answer. Glad the thought hadn't crossed Nicole's mind either.

As I headed back towards my workplace, cursing Felicia and her "common sense", I was determined not let this journey be in vain- I would grab a sandwich from someplace in this neck of the woods, therefore validating my excursion from my safe Embarcadero neighborhood to the treacherous SOMA district.

Luckily for me, a mere half block into my voyage back, I spotted the time-tested A.G. Ferrari deli. Me and A.G. have a dark past- it involves an ilicit arrangement between me, the high school smoothie maker, and Smiley, my classmate, who moonlighted as the boy-behind-the-sandwiches at the A.G. deli next door. Our relationship was filled with sin and deceit- our unknowing managers had hired a pair of tasty treat smugglers. Every week, Smiley and I traded sandwiches for smoothies, and no one was the wiser.

How I'd missed the rosemary focaccia bread! The razor thin slices of roast turkey and provolone! Oh, and the sweet and savory tang of the sundried-tomato pesto! All that was missing from the experience was... it wasn't free.

Moral of the story is: sometimes, what seems like an old fashioned lapse of thought can actually be a fortuitous turn of events. Also- damn do I need a friend in the deli business.

I think this place has serious potential of becoming a favorite sandwich place of mine if I can just get the right stuff on it done in the right way.

I did the create-your-own sandwich with hot coppa, provolone, onions and some sort of garlic spread.  It was really good, but I thought that they would automatically grill it for me which they don't and it needed it - next time I'll have to specify.  I'll also probably get a different spread as it seemed to be missing something, maybe I'll try the pesto next time.

It'll be awhile, but I'll probably be back, and perhaps I'll try some of the intriguing ready-made items and Italian foodstuffs they have throughout the store (didn't check the prices, but they'd be silly to charge more than places in the Ferry Building for them).

I feel classy today.  Those of you who know me, know I'm pretty classy EVERY day, but today especially.  I wore a dress to work.  Granted its over jeans, but we do live in San Francisco.  I have a nice tan from the weekend, and my skin looks great.  I was well behaved this weekend, I've tried keeping my foul language to a minimum, barely giggled at the "wood" jokes while camping, and right now I'm sipping on whats left of my San Pellegrino. In my world...thats class.

I was cruising the FiDi for a new place to eat today, and happened across the A G Ferrari Italian Catering shop/restaurant.  They have a deli counter where you can purchase food to order, or you can buy the pre-packaged stuff, like salads, sides, and lasagnas.  I opted to order a panini.  Mozzarella, tomato, and a delicious olive tapenade made this warm sandwich a perfect choice for my classy day.  I figured if i was going to review the place, I should try a side as well, so i ordered this fried ball of Parmesan cheese and artichoke.  I cant remember the name of it, but it was a great start to my meal.  Top it off with my bubbly water, and its class at its finest.  At least my version of it.

*Burp*  sorry....bubbly water makes me gassy.

What can I say, they had me at truffle oil :)

Truffle oil is by far one of my most favorite creations ever. Like when I bury my little time capsule it's going to have a bottle of that liquid gold in it. That's how much I love that stuff. And I will put it on anything. Eggs, pastas, bread, sauces, grilled cheese sammiches, chicken, water. Okay, not water, but seriously, it's the goods!

And so today in my hungover state, I sauntered on down to A G to get something hangoveriffic and after staring retardedly at the hanging menu for what seemed like an hour trying to make sense of the English language, truffle oil called my name and I ordered the #17 and while it didn't really do much for my hangover, it definitely reminded me that I am pretty much a food whore and no amount of alkeehol can stop that!

I'd give this place 5 stars, but $10 for a sammich is a little absurd, even with truffle oil :)

I needed something quick for lunch and decided to step into this small gourmet shop. Since I wasn't looking for an amazing meal just a quick bite I thought anything would suffice, I guess there were some expectations because I was disappointed.

Maybe it's the slightly over-priced feel in there but whatever it is I wasn't in love with my chicken panini. It was bland and slightly better than mediocre but not much and not enough for me to go back. At least not for lunch but maybe I would go back for some of their specialty items.

Cute shop, nice selection, not your go-to lunch place.

When you have no time to dilly dally, a deadline is creeping up behind and you need to nourish yourself (or at least fill your belly so it's not rumbling louder than thunder), I GUESS you could come here.

With all those aforementioned points stacked against us, we made a beeline for a this spot, thinking it would be quick and yummy without all the fuss. It was kind of quick and the yummy was was mildly questionable. My Italian flat bread sammy with prosciutto, tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and olive oil was just not right. For starters, If I am getting an $11 sandwich, it better be packed with prosciutto. And by packed I do not mean four measly slices of the stuff. Second, the prosciutto had better be fresh. It definitely wasn't fresh, but it was edible and I was starving and there was certainly no time to get anything else!

I did appreciate the friendly service and the racks of various olive oils, Italian snacks and breads, and a cheese counter that would leave any lactard bed-ridden for a few days.

I'd look for something else if I have the time, but if I am ever in a pinch again, I'll be ordering something other than prosciutto!

A recent discovery: it is when you are extremely hungry that a deli has maximum impact.  Every nuance of every flavor strikes home.

I've wolfed down the Toscana in this state two times.

There will be a third soon.

Yet another of my neighborhood grocery stores, I somehow managed to not make it over here very frequently, even though I walk by (twice) every day. A wise boy, fearing my angry chocolate fiendiness, bought me an Italian gianduja bar that kicks both Charles (sorry, Charles!) Chocolate and Vosges, on value and flavor. I have now discovered that A.G. Ferrari has a wealth of chocolates, a cheese selection that is comparably priced to Whole Foods and Bristol Farms, and an excellent selection of italian wines (if it comes down to AG or Zain's, I'm going with AG).

Additionally, if you like to spend lazy afternoons in Yerba Buena Park, this is an exceptional place to procure snacks. The people working here seem genuinely happy to be here and are very helpful. As a woman who knows what she wants about 99% of the time, I also appreciate their willingness to back off and let me direct traffic (as it pertains to what's going in my basket).

As a side note, I am sick and have a grocery list. If you could, please swing by and pick up some of the delicious gianduja chocolate, some sattocenere al tartufo, fresh burrata, and a whole leg of prosciutto (I'm on Atkins). That would be outstanding and I might even share with you. But probably not.

Service is super friendly and everything I've had has been great. I get the sandwiches or cold cuts to bring home.

    Updated review 5/25/05:
The line was again long and painful and I had a new puppy waiting for me back at the office, so I opted for the grab-and-go section. When I got back and opened the items up I found that the pasta salad was spoiled and the sandwich was likely a day old (no date on the price tag, but the lettuce was dark and the tomatoes were limp. I took the food back and didn't get much in the way of a real apology, though I did get my money back. My relationship with Ferrari on Mission is officially over until there is a management change. (stars also downgraded from 3 to 1)

    Original review:
Food quality is high, but the sandwich making process drives me crazy. Please Mr. Ferrari take a process design class, you don't need everyone doing everything. You need a person taking orders, a couple people making sandwiches (note: probably a good idea to pre-slice meats for popular sandwiches), and a cashier (how about 2 at peak times?). It's not like you don't have a reference design, Subway is only a couple blocks away. Imitation is a form of flattery right? Make them blush.
