A Fish Called Avalon is a wonderful little gem hidden amongst the barrage of pushy restaurants on Ocean Drive. This might be the ONLY dining establishment that does have a woman out front forcing 2 for 1 happy hour special coupons as you walk by, no cheesy seafood platter displays of snow crab legs awkwardly jetting out of a plate. The food and service speaks for itself. My husband and I made a last minute reservation to sit outside, when we came for a long weekend.
The space inside is simple and quiet, but the real action and charm ( in my opinion) is definitely outside!
We were seated on the porch up off the sidewalk, which made a nice buffer from all of the teeter women staggering by in their stilettos.
There was a live musician strumming away on his guitar.

We started with the octopus salad which was a special that night, plump tender morsels of octopi, soo delicious!  He had the Roasted Canadian Salmon, he said that it was by far the best Salmon that he's every had (he proclaims this a lot, however I truly agree with him this time) the portion was humongous and chardonnay truffle sauce  added the perfect amount of richness to the course.
I went for the gusto and had the Twin Hole Main Lobster!! drawn butter, mashed potatoes, it was just divine! The chefs  pre-cracked my crustacean so well, I did not even need to crack it.  The presentation was beautiful but again, you do really need to dress up lobster.
Our server Borjan was wonderful, he was quick, very pleasant and always a step ahead of the game and the arrival of our courses was just right. Our water glasses were always filled and the wine was always flowing. we were a little concerned since all the restaurants tend to add 18% gratuity for our 'convenience' we're still trying to figure out if it's legal. He truly deserved his tip and we gave him a little extra.
I know they say Ocean Drive is a tourist trap but Avalon is a stop you must make!
We were lucky enough to see fireworks set off from the beach over a glass of wine! BONUS!!

Found this place on yelp. The food was absolute perfection so 5 stars for that, minus one star for service. I asked my waiter for a few different things a number of times and he just didn't do it. He seemed super flakey, my food took forever, and I was already starving. Since I used to waitress, I know that the long wait was probably due to the waiter not entering the order until I asked where my food was like 25 minutes after my initial order. Not because 'the kitchen says chicken takes a long time to cook' like the waiter told me. Too bad this review is all about the flakey service and not the amazing dish I had which was the Citris Chicken. Maybe it's because 18% gratuity is included in the bill at all restaurants in SoBe? who knows.

FYI - all restaurants in SoBe include gratuity, I can only assume to account for all the foreigners? Anyway, the first couple of times out I didn't realize it and tipped an additional 20%!! So beware....

We were there for a work dinner with a big party of about 22 people. We started with some excellent mojitos at the bar before heading to our table.
Had a table outside. These people took good care of us. Even with such a big party they had their act together. Drinks kept getting filled, food was delivered on time. Ambiance was nice. They had a band playing on the porch. They were playing some good ol classics. So it was really nice way to relax and enjoy your meal but the restaurant nextdoor had some lound spanish music with dancers. So I could hear both making it hard for me to enjoy either.
One thing to be aware of if you're sitting outside on the sidewalk side is to keep your valuables safe. I put my purse under the table and althrough they have a policeman walking around it's good to be safe. He actually told one lady in our party to put her purse under the table just like I'd done.
Oh, and my co-worker next to me got hassled by a passer by bum when the policeman was not in sight. We thought it was funny but at the same time it was a little annoying.
Since we were a big party we had a prix fixe menu. I had the shrimp appetizer, a salad(baby greens I think), Macadamia-Crusted Snapper, and the cheese cake.
Appetizer was ok, I wasn't too excited then the salad, (it was a salad how excited can one get) but then on to the good stuff, the snapper was excellent. I thought I was stuffed then came the cheese cake. It was not too big so I thought I might as well go for it. OMG, it was so.......... good.
All, in all this is a great place and kudos for them to be able to handle a big party like ours and keep us all happy.

I debated on 3 or 4 stars for this one. I think our choices from the menu may not have been the best options to see what Avalon could really do, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt with a 4.

Service was perfect, 5 stars easy. Our waiter disappeared for a bit, BUT, another waiter showed up helping him out for awhile so we had no break in service.

Grilled octopus appetizer was incredible, I got it based on the reviews I had seen and we were not disappointed.

Salad with lobster for my mother and seared ahi tuna for me. I would say both dishes were decent, the lobster was a bit overcooked. It was good, but nothing really unexpected or what I was hoping from this caliber/priced restaurant.

I would probably try it again and explore the menu more. Reservations recommended (and it is far less casual dress then the rest of Ocean drive).

Food was good but service was terrible! We waited for so long to get fed and it's not good to keep 4 hungry women waiting! We had to wait over an hour to get our appitizer after ordering. That's just ridiculous! It didn't look like it was overly busy or crowded either. I think the worst part was they didn't come to tell us, hey I'm sorry we're backed up in the kitchen until we started to complain. At least give us bread or something! Nope we didn't get anything.

I feel like these restaurants on south beach get away with bad food and/or bad service because they know there aren't as many repeat customers with all the visitors and tourists that come through the area. It's really too bad because I looked promising.

Anyways, the food was pretty good which is why I didn't give it 1 star but the services was so bad that I couldn't justify giving it a higher rating. Go eat there when there aren't a ton of people around otherwise I'd stay away or you might die of starvartion before you get your food.

On the busy Ocean drive if u wanna find something nice and not too overwhelming Avalon is a good choice. If u get a seat on the terrace its a good spot for people watching butstill away enough not to be battled by the street crowd.

The sauce on the calamari was a bit sweet but generous portion and nice presentation, as well as the oysters which arrive with bell pepper slices 3 sauces on a blue lighten crushed ice pile - surprising and cool and also delicious. Macadamia snapper is local and lush while i got my order mixed so ended with two huge gigantic lobster side by side; it was much better looking then the ordered salad.
    I will go,and trymit again ;)

Recommended for foodies and ppl watchers, a bit on pricey side.

My boyfriend and I were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale about three weeks ago. We wanted to go to South Beach for a night out, so we got in the car and drove without really have a clear idea about where we were going. We drove as south as we could before turning around and parking to walk up Ocean Drive.

We picked A Fish Called Avalon after walking up and down the strip for about twenty minutes because we decided to go to the first place that didn't beg us to eat there with coupons. While the menu is much pricier than others, we'd rather pay more for a unique experience than for a restaurant with a pushy hostess and food displayed in plastic wrap.

We sat outside in the corner near the musicians playing guitars. I was concerned the speakers would be loud and we wouldn't be able to talk, but it was fine. Our server answered our questions, but he was quick to recommend everything that was the most expensive on the menu. Perhaps it's true that all of the most expensive things are most popular, but it was still questionable.

I asked about the soup of the day, and our server said he had not tried it, but it was four onion. Little did I know that this was beef based, so I ended up having to send it back since the beef flavor was overwhelming. However, the server was quick to remove the soup from our bill.

The entrees we enjoyed were rich with flavor. I had the seafood risotto. The seafood was good and fresh (especially the shrimp and baby scallops), but the mussels were not my favorite, and I loooove mussels. What was actually my favorite part was the risotto itself. It was perfectly cooked and even reheated later, it kept its consistency instead of becoming gluey.

My bf had the chicken, which was not recommended by our server when he asked about it; he was directed to the steaks instead. However, bf went with what he wanted, and I am glad he did because I liked his better than mine. For a seafood restaurant, that is not a compliment, I know, but still, I preferred his. It was perfectly cooked with some delicious white cheese on top that was unfamiliar to us but was creamy and smokey. The green beans and sweet potatoes were delicious as well.

Overall, I'm still glad we opted for this restaurant rather than others on the same street. The wine we enjoyed was delicious, and we had a very nice evening.

This place is right off the beach. Spectacular views The restaurant is nicely decorated with a good ambiance. The seafood is excellent!! We had the oysters, stone crab and 4lb lobsters and all were cooked, prepared and presented perfectly. I also ordered the ribeye was a little overcooked. Don't come here expecting to find huge margaritas. Do try to mojitos. The key lime pie was delicious.

Of all the places along ocean drive, this is the best!

Whoever runs this place deserves major credit for training his/her staff.  Everyone we came into contact with from the hostess to the water boys to the Server were excellent and knew their roles well.  ...such a contrast from the other hell-hole places along ocean drive where the server is expected to do everything for way too many tables at one time.

We loved it!   Bang bang shrimp, shrimp and grits, and the ahi tuna entree were all perfect.   The chef is a true artist, and it really shows in his recipes.

Dessert was the double choc cake and the apple bread pudding!   Phew, we were so stuffed and so happy!   Exactly what you want as the sun is setting on South Beach!
Go now to this place and enjoy the best dining experience on Ocean Drive!

I loved this place. Had twin whole maine lobster with a side of mash potatoes plus a raspberry mojito. Worth every buck that I spent!! Compared with the restaurant next to it with the guitar player and the dancer, Avalon offers more reasonable prices for similar (or even better) things. If you wonder where to eat on ocean drive, definitely check it out.

A great meal in South Beach and I believe this may be the very first time I'm saying that after 3-4 visits there. Ocean Drive, needless to say, tends to be a tourist trap with gimmicks such as 2-for-1 drinks. Each of the restaurants there have essentially the same menu, regardless of whether they are dressed up with a Spanish, Italian or American name and colors.

This place was a true break in that - it was a very nice atmosphere, not gimmicky at all. The food and service was excellent. While a place with "fish" in its name, they catered to vegetarians decently well with a pasta and risotto option each.

The price on this place might be 1.5-2 times of some of the other places on Ocean Dr, but the experience was 10x better and worth the extra dollars. Reservation recommended as they did get quite busy..

Pros:  upscale place but definitely not pretentious, great food
Cons: near a bunch of crappy restaurants but it's all good

A lot of Ocean Drive restaurants suck. I just wanted to get that out there. Most if not all restaurants on the strip had people hustling you to eat at there restaurant. This place had no one doing such a thing. This place was an exception. It had class, style, and absolutely great food. Me and my girlfriend enjoyed the evening at this joint ordering fresh fish, scallops and the paella. The food was served in a timely manner. Hot food were served w/ warm plates and cold w/ cool plates. The presentation of the food was nice. There weren't, if any, douchebags that were so come here instead of getting ripped off at many other restaurants surrounding this place.

All in all, this was our most enjoyable meal in the Miami area. The view of the beach front park from the patio and the cool ocean breezes put us in a receptive mood from the beginning, as did the glass of German riesling, after a very hot day. I noticed that almost everyone who was seated were full of delighted smiles after looking around. I loved my macadamia encrusted snapper, although it might be too sweet for some, and was really impressed with the perfectly cooked risotto. My husband also loved his salmon and mushrooms. Both the seafood itself and all the side dishes seemed to made with really high quality ingredients, and the key lime pie didn't disappoint either. My husband commented that he would have liked some simpler preparations offered on the menu, although he ended up very pleased. The live music was pleasant and romantic, rather than intrusive, and it all combined for a very pleasurable experience. I liked the patio--you could see the action but not feel overwhelmed by it. My only quibble is that the service seemed a little rushed; we got there early, at 7:00 but wanted to linger to at least after dark. I got the feeling that they'd just as soon turn over our table. But I see that other reviewers have called the service slow, so I guess it depends on the night and your preferences.

A Fish Called Avalon is right on Ocean Drive but lacks the tackiness of just about every other restaurant nearby and serves up a sophisticated seafood menu offering with unique flavors and reputable wine list.

So if you're looking for a non touristy restaurant in the middle of the action on Ocean Drive (aka tourist central) that doesn't have plastic wrapped displays of their food out front, this is a great place to start. Just don't come here if you're on a budget or diet because it's pricey and there's no sparing of butter and cream.

We started with the Spicy Bigeye Tuna Tartare to share. The Kimchee gave this a really unique spicy flavor. For entree's I had the grilled Mahi Mahi which was paired with a red pepper sauce, tomato confit and an eggplant risotto. The eggplant risotto was a bit of a strange combination but somehow it all seemed to work together. My Mom and sister both had the salmon which was covered in another rich sauce and paired with a butternut squash risotto. Both dishes were complex, delicious and unique, albeit a bit on the heavy side.

By the time, dessert came around we were pretty full but asked to see the dessert menu any way more out of curiosity. The waiter came back with a menu of after dinner drinks. So I wasn't sure if he was trying to get us out or did they really not have a dessert menu? He wasn't exactly the friendliest so I got the sense he was looking to go home.

Regardless of this snafu, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to tourists and locals alike so long as you're ok with a little seafood with your butter and cream (and who isn't?).

Great seafood selection, but a bit on heavy side - everything was Delicious but we left overwhelmed with buttery aftertaste and sogginess in our stomachs.

We had escargot in puffed pastry, asian calamary, nut crusted snapper and seafood paella. All were top notch (again, partially due to generous leverage of butter), but the latter is simply huge, so I would recommend splitting the dish among 2 people.

The place ambiance is good for a date, maybe almost too romantic in the midst of south beach, and the service was on par.

Highly recommend A Fish Called Avalon for South Beach seafood.  My wife and I made reservations for A Fish Called Avalon at about 2:30 on the 4th of July and were able to get an 8:00 reservation the same day.   There was a table ready immediately inside but the maitre'd offered us the chance to wait at the bar for a few minutes and get a table outside on the patio overlooking Ocean Drive.  We waited and had a glass of their Avalon house Cabernet, which was great.   We were happy we waited.

Ten minutes later, we were seated on the patio and had the most amazing view of the fireworks (and the awesome insanity of Ocean Drive on 4th of July) over the beach at 8th street (one block north) and enjoyed the grilled octopus appetizer.   Excellent flavor, very fresh, wonderful dish.    We decided to have a bottle of the Avalon cabernet which for $40 was a great deal for a good bottle of wine at any restaurant.

For an entree, we decided to share the Orzo Seafood Paella which was also amazing.  Scallops, shrimp, calamari and mussels in a delicious seafood broth with yummy orzo, fresh tomatoes and basil.  We were full enough to skip dessert and walked out for just over $120, including the bottle of wine, tax and the included gratuity.   To fill up on Ocean Drive at that price and have great seafood, this was a great experience.  Service at the bar, host desk and table were all top notch.

We were directed here by the locals because it's not touristy. Excellent atmosphere. A little older crowd. Terrific lobster. The Seabass melts in your mouth. The bang bang shrimp was interesting, but not the best thing there; I preferred the panko crusted mozarella appetizer. The guitarist was playing led, so I couldn't ask for much more.

A good place on Ocean!  My only gripe is that it is so expensive and service was just not that great!

We started withe the bang bang shrimp.  Yes it was delicious but it consisted of THREE pieces of shrimp and cost $16!

My tuna was actually amazing and my partner had the snapper which was very rich and filling.  The cheapest wine was $10 a glass but we still had a few glasses which increases the bill quickly.  We sat on the patio which I think is nicer than sitting on the sidewalk.

Service:  The service here was really just not great.  They did bring out more bread when we asked for it but it took the waiter about 15 minutes to come take our order and we felt rushed to put in our order because "the kitchen is backed up" - not really a problem because we'd had a lot of time to look at the menu, but for a restaurant at this price point service should be better.

Make reservations as it was very crowded on a Friday night even at 7:30pm.  I can only imagine that it gets even more crowded later in the evening.

First off, our waiter was witty as he explained how "everything on the menu is good, the service, not so good."
The tomato garlic hummus spread was delish. Asian calamari was tasty and crispy and enough to share with 6 people. The sea bass was cooked to perfection and the beurre blanc sauce creamy good. The orzo paella was served in a hot skillet and was out of this world. My only complaint is that it was too much for me to finish. I wish we had room for dessert.

When I and my husband were on vacation in Miami Beach this April, we asked a waiter in our hotel's bar, which place he would suggest to eat a good quality sea food. And he said: "A Fish called Avalon - the best sea food in Miami Beach"! And he was SO right!!!

We went there twice! First time we called beforehead and made a reservation, so we had a wonderful table outside. There were a musician, who played a guitar. So romantic!!! And the food... We both love sea food and used to go a lot to those kind of restaurants, but "A fish called Avalon" was the BEST-BEST-BEST!!!

Next time we didn't call, so we had a table inside the restaurant (and hotel). So be sure you call and reseve a table! But anyway we loved it again!!!

The only place on Ocean Drive that felt like a regular restaurant without seeming like a tourist trap. The outdoors seating was nice, and fortunately the live music (yes unfortunately every place on this strip seems to have this element) was not as obtrusive as it seems in other places.

In terms of the food, the quality was good, but the food was quite heavy, and the portions were a bit too large. For dessert we had a deconstructed creme brulée which just had too much going on.

Still A Fish Called Avalon was a respite from the hullabaloo on Ocean Drive.

Better than meh.. not an A....just OK.

While the food was good & the service was efficient, I can't say I'd go here again. For $40 (including tax & tip, no beverage) I received a 6-8oz piece of snapper & a scant cup of cooked spinach. I could buy 5 lbs of snapper for that price at the store. Yes it is a chic place to eat in SOBE & the live music was pleasant but I left hungry & broke. Street parking hard to find. There is a parking garage on 7th & Collins. $1/hr.

Great place! Started out with the New England clam chowder, which is a must for me in the fall (even in south Florida...). For my entree I had the macadamia-crusted snapper, and it was the best fish I'd had in a good while. Finished up with the apple bread pudding, which converted one of my dining companions into a bread pudding fan.

Loved the ambience here...it felt like Florida...if that makes sense.

I know Joe's is THE place to go for seafood, but we have Joe's in Chicago, so we went here...very glad we did!

And I thought only Seattle knew how to do Seafood! Pah-lease! Avalon was spot on. Smaller yet adequate menu. Live music. Ocean views. And very best of all- South Beach people watching.

Calamari was some of the best I have had since Camps Bay South Africa. Shrimp appetizer comes with just 4 shrimp- at least that was one for each person to sample. Seafood Risotto and Mahi Mahi with Mango Salsa- amazing.

Our party of four came hungry and left pleasantly pleased. Not to mention attentive service.

I would've listened to the live steel guitar all night and just watched the lively and eclectic locals, but Avalon is a bit on the pricey side. So maybe get your night cap and dessert a few doors down at News Cafe.

This was an absolutely fabulous dinner. The service was impeccable and the gentleman strumming lightly on his guitar created a fine ambiance. The server was spot on and helpful providing guidance to a couple of people on the fence about their order. I think I ate every shellfish the ocean offers other than abalone. I highly recommend the ceviche oyster on a half shell, not a lot to eat but oh so delicate and delightful. This may be the best meal I have had in Miami.

Our concierge at the Fountainebleau recommended that we dine here for dinner and we were very pleased with his suggestion. Our party of three sat on the outside terrace, enjoying the ocean breeze, while indulging in some South Beach people watching. I'd recommend sitting on the terrace, rather than on the actual sidewalk. For us, it seemed a bit safer.

I had the crab bisque to start, which I have to admit was some of the best crab bisque I've had. The silky soup was rich and creamy, full of sweet crab meat, with a splash of cognac and sage-seasoned creme fraiche. For dinner, I ordered the seafood risotto, which was chock full of shrimp, calamari, mussels and fish. The risotto was cooked and seasoned perfectly. English peas, tomato and basil added sweetness, which balance out the savory flavors from the fruits of the sea.

The service was mediocre, but the food definitely made up for it.

I was advised that Miami is famous for their seafood and I was definitely not disappointed. A Fish Called Avalon has a funny name, but after one taste, you definitely will remember it!

This is "the" restaurant in South Beach
If you only have one night to spend in Sobe have dinner at Avalon.  While some people will be taken with the people watching (which is impressive) the food is tremendous.  Light sauces, great balance, perfect flavors.  Everything we had was perfect.  Have to tell you I would make a trip back to Sobe for this restaurant.
    BTW try the seabass.

Table wasn't ready when we got there. Had two drinks and a mediocre crab cake for $55. Got seated, 30 minutes later, then waited 20 minutes for our server, who never came, and then we left. Good luck with that.

This restaurant doesn't need to coerce people to dine.  Their strategy: serve delicious food with attentive service.   We had the smoked salmon appetizer, grouper and sea bass for the main course.  Both pieces of fish cooked to perfection.

Amazing restaurant!!!!!  I love to eat at different restaurants all the time and A fish called Avalon by far is the best seafood restaurant I have eaten at in South Beach.  I went on Sunday and they had a gentlemen playing acoustic guitar and set the ambiance perfectly.

Despite it being on Ocean Drive where most restaurants are attacking you and begging you to eat at their restaurant, this place is laid back, classy and the food is amazing.

Our waiter was pleasant, courteous and attentive.  Please if you are a fan of great service and seafood go to this place.  I will be back again!!!!

Decided on this restaurant based on the great reviews from my fellow yelpers. For starters, we had the calamari. It was decent.  I was surprised to find that it had a heavy coating of breading.  It was nothing special (sorry Georgia S!).  For entrees, we ordered the organic chicken and my friend ordered the seafood paella. Both were excellent and the food was surprisingly plentiful. The paella had alot of seafood and the chicken dish had two nice sized chicken breasts (the sweet potato mash was outstanding).  Be warned that if you order the paella, it can take a while to prepare.  I think if I go again with someone, I might order two appetizers and one entree (to split amongst ourselves).

The drinks were great too. I had the berry mojito. Drinks are pretty expensive but worth it. The ambiance was great because you can sit outside and people watch and feel the ocean breeze. The service was a little too slow for me, but I understand that's pretty much the norm in SOBE so I'm just gonna roll with it.
