Remember that cupcake place on the square I've been stalking since November? It's open now! It actually opened the day after Christmas, and today was my day to drool on the inside of the building, instead of the inside of my car as I drive by.
Let me just say, the wait was worth it. Shawna Rollheiser has already put the other cupcake vendors in town to shame. That's right, I said it. I'm no cupcake connoisseur, but I do know what I like, and Shawna has it. Cute little storefront next door to a gourmet hot dog joint, which is next door to a coffeeshop. It's practically perfect.
And the cupcakes themselves? Love at first bite!
I'm thinking 2012 is going to be a sweet year.Listed in: My small town is cooler than…

A Cupcake a Day is a small locally owned bakery on the square in Medina. The storefront is adorable, and the owner changes the front window display monthly. The cupcakes are reasonably priced for a specialty cupcake bakery at $1.75 a piece, which is 75 cents cheaper than the competing bakery on the other side of the square. They also feature mini cupcakes at a buck a piece or a bakers dozen for $12, which my co-workers are now lucky enough to find in the break room at least once a week.
There is a variety of at least a dozen flavors to choose from, usually more.
The owner continues baking as the cupcakes run out throughout the day, so theyre always fresh. Also on the menu are vegan cupcakes ($2.50) every Friday and Saturday, and every Friday is Gluten Free Friday, where a few flavors of gluten free cupcakes are offered in four packs. For an occasional treat, there are Nanaimo bars, which are a little piece of heaven hailing from Canada- a layer bar with a graham cracker crust, a vanilla custard flavored light butter icing, and covered with chocolate ganache. Pupcakes, a k-9 friendly mini cupcake, make an appaerance a few times a month.
Favorite flavors of mine include the vegan chocolate which features raspberry frosting topped with a fresh raspberry, Chocolate Decadent Delight, a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate ganache center, peanut butter frosting and a pretzel caramel topping. In March, there was an Irish Car Bomb cupcake to live for- chocolate Guiness cupcake with an Irish whiskey chocolate ganache center topped with Baileys Irish Cream buttercream frosting. Love, love, love this place! Stop in for a cupcake, you'll leave with a smile and a six pack of heaven in a box.
*** be prepared to parallel park, its on the square and parking is limited- but its totally worth it! -

Very nice cupcakes. Fresh, moist cake and very tasty frosting. Variety and appearance not too exciting but maybe once the grand opening occurs flavors will be more unique.
Comparing to the other two cupcake shops in the area, A Cupcake a Day appears equal in taste to the best, superior to all in value at $1.75 each, number two in variety. And tied for last in appearance.
I hope that the owner will use Facebook to list daily menu as I for one am unlikely to stop without seeing what flavors are being offered.
Okay- I am changing my value statement above because I went to the grand opening and bought two cupcakes and they were $2.50 each. The only difference on each was a minipretzel and an Andes mint- both of which were thrown out. Cake and frosting was great but how do you justify $.75 more for a cheap waxy chocolate and 1 tiny pretzel?
Also, owner needs to put a description of what each is. What could a sour patch cupcake be other than candy flavored?
I still enjoyed the cake and frosting but was expecting to pay less. -

After enough bacon-and-cheese laden dogs next door at Dan's, you're sure to need medical attention sooner or later. That is, of course, unless you proactively follow the old adage and stop next door at the new "A Cupcake a Day."
If you're accustomed to cupcakes by Duncan or Betty, it's time to head down to the square and see just how delish these treats can be. The west coast has long been swept by $4 cupcakes from the likes of Sprinkles, Sibbey's, and Kara's, and if ACAD is any indication, the craze is about to hit the Midwest. Have no fear, the prices are regionally appropriate: $1.75 for full size, $1 for mini.
Here's the 'cake by 'cake:
Banana: By far the standout. Sure to be their best seller. The batter is full of fresh bananas (peak behind the counter and into the kitchen and you'll see metro shelving full of them.) Delicious banana infused cream cheese frosting.
Red velvet: The key to any RV is the cream cheese frosting, and this does not disappoint. The cake is respectable but nothing to write home about.
Chocolate: Nice and moist, not too sweet. Very pleasant!
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip: Too sweet for some in our party. This is basically the cupcake equivalent of those cookies you make with peanut butter and sugar dough and a Hershey's kiss on top.
The soft opening was yesterday (12/26/2011), the grand opening is 01/07/2012. Considering we visited on their second day baking, the future looks bright for A Cupcake a Day. Now that you finally have one, support your local cupcakery! -

I want to eat one of those cupcakes everyday! I have been checking out the menu they update daily on Facebook and finally was able to actual get in to try them today!
I had red velvet and it was amazing! It was moist and the frosting was so goo! I am not one for frosting but this frosting was light and fluffy and not too sweet! My son crushed an almond mini cupcake and the others that went with me had a chocolate and the Irish car bomb! There was not a crumb left over from any of them! The mini cupcakes are only $1 and the regular size are $1.75.
Will definitely be going back soon! -

I'm a fan, esp compared to the other cupcake place in Medina Square area. Good value, moist, yummy, good variety. We enjoyed all the cupcakes we purchased, w/ the exception of the strawberry champagne one. We'll definitely be back. And the owner is using FB to update the daily flavors.
