Review from Peter D.
I've picked up a nasty cooking habit, and A Cook's Companion is my pusher. The staff here is too friendly, too helpful, and entirely too knowledgeable about their stock, their prices and cooking in general. I'm afraid I'm addicted for life.
It seems as though every person on staff has actually cooked with every item in the store. If I have a question about a sauté pan, a guy appears as soon as I turn to look for him and he knows EVERYTHING. He can tell me which one requires more upkeep, which is more difficult to clean, and which will provide the best sear. Oh, he has to go check on eight different items for the unbearably indecisive haggler behind me?
No worries. A lovely woman happens by and tells me which pan is preferable for cooking this or that, and which one she recommends because she has it at home and it's not only amazingly durable, but it does the trick for everything she has tried. And it's not even the most expensive model; it's on sale!
The staff is why you shop here, locally, instead of on Amazon.*
And when my mom told the owner that she drove down to Brooklyn just to shop at A Cook's Companion and definitely not to visit her ungrateful little bastard of a son, that nice lady gave her a spatula on the house.
Merry Christmas, people.

Review from Erica J.
The selection and service at A Cook's Companion were fantastic. Everything I needed for basic baking and beyond were available, even separated into a nice back room (it's like the porn room at a video store; they put the good stuff in the back...) plenty of dyes, sprinkles, and decorating elements, as well as boxes for packaging cakes, cookies, etc. to-go (and decorative string as well!). There was a good selection of cookie cutters and baking sheets, pans, etc. Equally impressive was the amount of Le Creuset offered; I purchased the small tea kettle that also happened to be 20% off (there was a great sale going on). Overall, for all your kitchen needs, i think this is a really comprehensive store for it's size!

Why why why is this store closed on Tuesdays? I could understand Sundays, but smack in the middle of the week?! I lugged my CO2 cartridge all the way here because I like shopping this neighborhood. But now you've given me a chance to look for other places to get my refill and to drool over kitchenware. Oh well.

Review from Donna F.
I am a kitchen gadget whore. If I could I would gladly give up clothes and shoe shopping in order to buy all of the gadgets I ogle at kitschy little kitchen supply stores like A Cook's Companion.
The store is a good staple kitchen supply store. The separate baking section is perfect for ex-pastry assistants like myself whose idea of unwinding after a hard day's work is to bake in their tiny humid apartment kitchens and while the staff is nice, the prices are a tad too high and the selection is simply not as extensive as Bowery Kitchen Supply.
A Cook's Companion will definitely come in handy for my last-minute baking needs but, for my much needed relaxing kitchen browsing time, it is definitely not my first pick.

Update 10/8/11
After needing to go to A Cook's for multiple, last minute baking needs (which we all have, right?) I can not live with my previous review.
The sales people so are nice, affable and know their cooking/baking supplies that to give them just three stars feels like giving an A student an A- just for being ugly.
While their prices are still a bit higher than other places and the layout of the store is not the best for moving around. The staff really cares about finding you the perfect product and helping you figure out all cooking/baking conundrums. One salesperson, in fact, helped me with a pan question then came back later, as I was still staring at the four options, and continued to ponder with me. Definitely five star service.
They are a good resource for us Cobble-Boreum-Hillers. One, in which, I would be lost without. -

MY MOST FAVORITE STORE!!!
This store has it all and great service too. If you love cooking or baking, this is the place to go. If you like little kitchen gadgets, this is the place to go. If you just love to shop, this is the place to go.
The prices are fairly reasonable and on top of that, everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. They sell a lot of quality kitchenware.
It is dangerous in that you buy things that you never thought you'd buy, but it's such a great store! -

Like Madonna once warbled, this used to be my playground...but not anymore. I just had a shockingly awful experience here last night. So bad, in fact, that I left almost crying out of frustration, and will not be going back. Please understand, I say this after shopping at Cook's Companion (and having knives sharpened, and sending friends to have THEIRS sharpened, and so on) on a semi regular basis since 2002, when they were in their original, even smaller space across the street (if you can believe that- it was actually SMALLER). No complaints on service to speak of...so this was truly surprising.
When I walked in last night with my Gentleman Caller in tow, we were planning to ask about a potential wedding registry as well as casually look about for knick knacks that called out to be taken home. The nastier of the 2 sales people working was on us like a beast from a tree right away, asking if she could help us find anything with no trace of a smile in her voice/on her face. When I responded back pleasantly that we were looking around but would let her know, she flinched as if I had just spit chewed food on her, then flounced off. I ignored it thinking, Hmmm, maybe I just imagined that? Or, maybe they have an after-school retail program for troubled teens fresh out of juvie?
We found some cute household things, were greeted in the back room by another more pleasant, polite salesperson, and made our way to the register. But not before over-hearing our Sourpuss Salesgirl inform a customer not to forgot the large bag of groceries he had dropped off (so as to allow him browsing in the cramped space), because she was closing at 6 PM SHARP. Ewww! Unprofessional, times 10. But, no matter- I again figured perhaps the owner was letting her bratty niece work a few shifts to pay for her senior class trip to Cabo, or some such folly.
But then, s@#t went off the rails for me, a customer service professional who doesn't ask much but who would will not hesitate to speak up when things are just not acceptable. I was snapped at that I could not use my checking card as a "credit card", due to "store policy". The whole "no credit choice on debit cards, just PIN" baloney is, as mentioned prior in other reviews, totally evil & lame. However, I may not have balked had it been explained politely to me rather then snarled at me as if I was an errant toddler trying to cram 100 marshmallows in my mouth at supper.
Honestly, I am amazed that I let myself be verbally abused by a "salesperson" who made the tactics utilized at Guantanamo Bay seem jovial-but it gets worse. I NEVER am forced to use my PIN by other merchants, so I was flustered when I was snapped at to do so. I of course forgot it when trying to enter it and, the sale failed. I asked to swipe my card again so I could re-enter the accurate PIN and was told in a LOUD voice by the snotty salesgirl, "NO, IT WAS DECLINED. IT WON'T WORK. IT'S ALREADY BEEN IN THE MACHINE." (What?!) This, in front of plenty of other customers, all of whom had been cowed as well.
I don't need to state that there were of course ample funds in the account to you, dear Yelper. That is besides the point, because the more pressing issue is that a sacred covenant of customer relations was stomped on. Once you go out of your way to make a customer uncomfortable in ANY fashion about tender issues, you've shown that you're a low class joint not fit to host a dog fight.
Not only will I not make any attempt to set up any of my wedding registry at Cook's Companion, but I will never darken their doorstep again. You can tolerate poor service up onto a certain point, but that was just too far. I get it- you're a cute neighborhood place, one the locals (myself no longer included) love to support as a Mom & Pop should be.
But that is NO EXCUSE for hiring rude, nasty and spiteful salespeople. All joking aside, I hate to stop frequenting this place, but this was beyond inappropriate. Quaint only gets you so far, and as a business owner you must be responsible not just for having great cookware but decent people to deal with your cookware clientele. Head into Broadway Panhandler instead- at least it's a giant space full of rude people. -
Review from Katie S.
Oh the money I have spent at A Cook's Companion. . . and I honestly don't regret a cent of it.
I come here all the time, and they almost always have the exact thing I want. And when they don't, the manager (owner?) tells me where to get it. They're really good about explaining the different products and helping you compare features. Also, they'll offer you help, but if you say no thanks, they'll let you stand there and think as long as you want. I may be alone in this, but I really appreciate that. I've never experienced a hard-sell or an impatient sales person here.
Their prices are also fairly competitive. Some of them you might be able to beat online, but as far as I can tell they're the best deal in New York. And, for those who care about such things, they're really a part of the neighborhood, just the kind of business you're happy to support because they care about the community and they clearly take pride in their work. -

This place is super cute. I would like to buy everything here. Of course, I am a foodie and I love kitchen gadets and dishes and the like. I will say that this place is kind of overpriced, but I think their clientele (brownstone brooklyn) can afford it. I bought a few things here on Sunday and had great service.
However, this was the only time I have had good service here. I have been here before for knife sharpening (they did a great job) as well as to browse and always got looks like they thought I was about to steal something. Maybe the difference the other day was that I had several shopping bags from local shops so they knew I'd likely buy something?
Anyway, cute store and very necessary for the neighborhood! A Cook's Companion was a lifesaver when I needed pans to bake some gingerbread on a cold Sunday afternoon. -

Time: 6 pm, Thanksgiving eve
Place: My kitchen
The scene: Two pie crusts lie in gentle rounds, wrapped in saran blankets in the fridge. A gentle cook (me!) is digging through the pantry, looking for something... a pie pan! Alas... a single, lonely pan was all that was to be found.
(panic ensues)
Have no fear! A trip to A Cook's Companion for a blue Emile Henry ceramic pie pan will solve the problem.
On arrival, the store is packed. Last minute shoppers, scramblers (like me), and staff fill every isle. But the shelf is bare! One pie pan remains, but it's an ugly eggplant color. In the arms of another shopper I spot my Grail... a blue Emile Henry ceramic pie plan. I tell the staff at the register that I would buy it if the shopper decides not to buy it.
Ten minutes later I left the store with a new rolling pin, a small box of chocolate salt caramels... and a brand new, Azur (blue), ceramic, 12 inch, Emile Henry pie pan!
Despite being incredibly busy (see: time) the staff remembered my request and found me, even though it was obvious from the dearth of pans that the pan would be sold either way. I think that kind of service is worth five stars alone. However, this store has something else I love: a well edited inventory. Although the store is not large (and does not have a "tight-packed" feeling), it manages to cover all the bases, and do so in a way that provides a selection of the highest-rated and cutest tools and accessories. As for the price, I googled that pan and I paid less at the store.
I returned home, and the next day I received rave reviews for my dutch apple and pumpkin pies. Thanks ACC! -

I was on my way home with a basket full of sour cherries destined for homemade cocktail maraschinos. After a long day of walking in the sun, I didn't have the energy to dig out the pits with a knife. So, I needed a real cherry pitter. Enter Cook's Companion.
They had not one, not two, but three different types of pitters in this small space. One was a novelty toy which has garnered a lot of angry & frustrated Amazon reviews. The other two were more practical -- the Oxo + splatter guard, which is easiest to use and an all-metal one, which is easier to clean & sterilize.
I was pleased with the selection, and we got pretty attentive service. So thumbs up for that!
- 1 star for higher than high-average prices.
- 1 star for violating their credit card merchant agreement.
I tried to pay with my MasterCard branded debit card and the clerk refused to run it as a credit card. She said they only run those with PINs. Leave a small biz w/ my PIN!? Oh HELL NO. Vendors try to get away with this because it saves them a few cents to run a debit card rather than a credit card, but merchant agreements require that vendors treat CC-branded debits as CCs when the customer requests, and that there be no minimum-purchase for CCs. (So you can threaten to report a merchant to VISA/MC/etc if they post a $10 CC minimum & won't let you buy $7.82 worth of groceries. FYI.)
I really don't like to see businesses try to get one over on their customers to save a nickel. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But I'm going to go pop a homemade maraschino cherry to take the edge off. -

Great little kitchen store with everything from appliances and knifes to nick knacks and cookware. The place is clean, the prices are reasonable and the people are nice. They've been here for 12 years now and hope they stick around for another 12 years.
I looking for a seafood set of crackers and forks for lobster. I knew I wanted to check out the Cooks Companion but I wanted to make sure I wasn't being ripped off so I checked out Amazon first. The sets I saw on Amazon were from $11-18 so I went to the store to browse what they had. They had a nice set for $19 which I was willing to get because I wouldn't have to pay shipping and wait like I would on line but then I found a decent set for $10 (actually two small sets for $5 ea) and I knew I found a good deal. Very surprising for an independent specialty shop bordering Brooklyn Heights. -

This place is HEAVEN. This place is pretty small, I don't even cook that much (tiny kitchen), but I could spend hours roaming around oooooohing and aaaaahhhhhing over everything. My new goal in life is to have enough money (and time) to have a huge kitchen in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill that I can fill with things from this amazing store... then learn to cook.
In the meantime, I drop in frequently and droll over the back room, which is a bakers dream. I have never seen so many types of sprinkles in my life. Nor so many types of cupcake holders. Don't even get me started on the cookie cutters.
The employees here are really so nice. I've never felt pressured when shopping and they don't follow you around (big pet peeve of mine), they are, however, super knowledgeable and willing to help you find whatever you are looking for (I love my new wine glasses). -

Brooklyn, NY
This place gets five stars, and not just because I love kitchen gadgets and cooking tools, or because I've been to know to scream with glee when I see an amazing cookie cutter (last Thanksgiving, I found a giant turkey one -- priceless).
No. A Cook's Companion gets five stars because the service is great, the merchandise is fun (and well-chosen), and the prices aren't exorbitant, considering that there's no other store like it nearby.
Have a cooking question? The staff is knowledgeable and willing to offer advice. Looking for a present for someone? They'll steer you in the right direction. Really.
If you live in Brooklyn, or if there's a kitchen in your apartment, you should stop by. The store offers a great selection of appliances, pots and pans, baking supplies, cookbooks, teapots, knives, and more. You'll find things you didn't even know you needed.Listed in: Atlantic Avenue Amble

Quite a large selection for such a small space. Very nice people, but they can be a bit aloof rather than friendly.
I buy small utensils, knives or individual pans when on sale but for those big purchases -- like a 12-piece top-of-the-line pot and pan set -- http://Amazon.com is cheaper...plus they deliver!
Still, if you believe that local, small merchants are important to the fabric of a neighborhood then you should give these guys some of your business on a regular basis. -

They have a decent collection of stuff available. However, they are extremely overpriced and they have really poor customer service - they are just straight up unhelpful and rude.
They are lucky since they are the only game in town (area), however i would make the trip out to the bowery and just buy stuff there. -

I. Love. This. Store.
Seriously, it might be one of my favorite places ever. If you love cooking, this store is for you. It doesn't have the selection of a huge kitchen depot, but what they do have is beautifully, carefully curated. Lodge cast iron, Le Creuset Dutch ovens, Nordic Ware cookie sheets...you get the picture. I could spend hours in the back room, where the glorious selection of sanding sugars and cookie cutters resides.
Their pricing is actually really reasonable, considering its boutique-ness. I'm an avid http://amazon.com shopper and their prices are pretty much on par. I actually got a gorgeous Wusthoff knife for less than I saw it anywhere else. (The knives selection! Don't even get me started on the knives selection.)
The staff is crazy helpful. If they don't have something in stock, they'll call you when they get it in. If they're not sure, they'll scour their store room (which is how I got THE LAST Le Creuset casserole set in Carribean! Wooooo!)
Anyway, if you love kitchen things, go. Just do it. Even if you don't think you need anything, you totally do. Really. -

Don't go here if you're looking to save money.
If you're anything like me you will probably leave the store with a handful of peelers, specialty dish soaps, and a new tea kettle.
I love the well-curated selection here. And the lovely ladies who work here tried her damnedest to convince my friend to cook me a hearty meal with her new love (a tri-ply skillet). -

I think everything is on sale here. All pans and pots, even Le Creuset, seems to be about 25% marked down, which makes it feel like you're getting some sort of bargain, since that usually means about $30-100 off whatever you're buying here.
The people working here were genuinely interested in helping me picking out what I needed (cast-iron items). Bonus points for that. And it's right by the Atlantic Bookstore and the Sahadi's and Trader Joe's. -

LOVE THIS PLACE.!!! I moved to Park Slope 2 months ago and I've been meaning to head over here, for awhile to outfit my bachelor pad's kitchen. FInally got over there today, and now I wish I'd done it sooner and given them more of my business. Seriously.... first time I've been to a store in recent memory, no joke, where I went in to look for a particular item and not only did they have the exact item IN STOCK, they had many other items that are on my wish list, as well. Unfortunately for me, funds are low at the moment, but rest assured I will be going back.
I found their prices to be reasonable, too. I often research products online, before purchasing-especially cooking stuff, because lets face it, decent cooking gear isn't cheap, and I want stuff that's gonna work well and last-just like grandma's. I almost always have major sticker shock when I finally find a particular item for sale in some nyc shops, compared to prices I find online - even factoring in shipping costs. That isn't the case here, their markup is very reasonable. I'd say prices here are comparable to Sur La Table; some items were cheaper.
I also like that they have a nice selection of quality items in the mid price range along with more expensive stuff. Not all of us can afford, to outfit our kitchens with All-Clad and Mauviel. So, whoever does the buying at Cooks Companion, I salute you!!!! Great job.
On top of it all-the cashier, and salespeople were SUPER PLEASANT AND FRIENDLY without getting all up in your mix while shopping, So I'm not sure what happened with some of the reviewers below.
Great store guys!!! Bon Appetite! -

I was looking for a bread stone for my oven, an oven thermometer and a dough scraper and found it all at A Cook's Companion.
I had very good customer service, actually. Half an hour from closing, apart from the cashier, there were two salespeople wandering around helping people out. I also chatted amicably about bread with someone who seemed to be a manager. I'm not sure how the customer service could have been better, so I'm a bit confused by the reviews that bash on the service. Maybe they have/had a bad apple?
A Cook's Companion has a great selection of items in stock -- not packed to the gills with every possible item in every possible price range, but a good selection of medium-to-higher-end stuff.
The price range is what you'd expect for Boerum Hill: it's on the higher end of things. On the other hand, I didn't have to go into Manhattan to find a bread stone! -

I have to start off by saying that when this store first opened up I was a fan right off the bat. Being someone that loves to cook and seems to always be in the market for sone kind of new kitchen thing, I immediately loved and supported this place. The owners of this store were always helpful and friendly and it was nice to support a new small and local business. It was really nice when they were able to expand and move a block away into a much bigger store with a bigger inventory. However....... the attitude has gotten bigger since too.
I have to admit that I do not go in as often as I used to but when I need something, they have been the first place I think of and go to in order to get it. The last few times I have gone in the assistance has been well below par and I have been made to feel like I was bothering them by asking questions. The last time I asked a question it was about a fairly big ticket item and I was unable to get a decent answer out of the salesperson or a decent attitude. I decided it was better to get it somewhere else where my business was appreciated.
I don't like that I feel this way about a business that I used to support and love. Being independently employed, I like to support the other small businesses in the neighborhood and I can tolerate a bad trip or two if it's just the case of a bad employee but I have seen a bad attitude out of several of their employees and I think the attitude has spread to the entire store. Some of the store policies have become suspect as well. I have heard horror stories from friends over the past several years and never gave them enough credit because I still wanted to like the store. Then I tried to use my debit card as a credit card there (like I do with ANY other business everywhere else) and they would only let me run it as debit. It may not sound like a big deal but it is to me and it's a lot more secure for me to run it as credit. It's a crappy policy.
So sorry Cooks Companion but I will be going elsewhere for my kitchen and cooking needs. There are still a lot of All Clad pans that I do not have and still want. Maybe I'll just go onto one of the many websites that have what I need and not only get a better price but have it delivered to my door by the UPS man. He happens to be a very nice guy and never gives me crap, even when the package is large and heavy. -

So much cute stuff..and so very dangerous.
I now live so close to this store that I've made a self-preservation (OK, wallet preservation) rule. I am not allowed to visit more than once a week.
Unless they're having an outdoor table sale.
Or a sale in general.
Or I really really need a garlic press/can opener etc.
You can see why I made a rule.
Tons of great stuff @ a variety of prices.
A little pricey, but totally reasonable considering they're a small operation.
I do wish they were a little friendlier though.
Some of the staff is great...and some of them make me want to walk around with my hands in the air (Look! I'm not stealing! See my hands?!). -

Bought an awesome French oyster shucking knife on the cheap here. Great gadgets and baking section but I'm not a great baker. I always feel they have everything I need at a given moment. They carry quality products at various price points which is nice.
I have dropped some decent coin there on a couple of occasions and yet I Always get frigid, bored service. Not a fan of the staff. I'm all for buying local and keeping local economy, going but there's too much tude and lackluster service to inspire me to shop there anytime soon. -

I went for the baking section. I heard it was fantastic, it was. Tons of cookie cutters in every shape you could possibly desire. I selected a mortarboard (my little sister's graduating high school, I'm making her favorite cookies iced in the school colors she can't wait to forget and the new school colors). They had lots of other baking items, including adorable cupcake liners and vegan sprinkles and other decorations.
I also noticed some awesome monster themed children's tableware, I don't have kids, though it was so cute I kind of wish I did so I'd have an excuse to buy it. -

A cute shop with very attentive staff, chock full of cool things for your kitchen. Expensive things with names you recognize from wealthy friends' kitchens or upscale lifestyle magazines: Le Cruset, Shun, Emile-Henri... Those who cook, or like the idea of seeming like they do eventually end up buying some of these things. They also make nice wedding gifts. So, sooner or later, you may end up buying some of this stuff. Given that the prices are the same here as most online retailers I'd say you're better off buying here. The shopping experience is a pleasant one. As it ought to be whenever buying expensive things.

It happens so rarely that the moral imperative (support local small business!) and practical needs (need a knowledgeable salesperson and wide selection!) hit the economic sweet spot too. This is one such place. Please, Brooklyn people, do not spend your money at Bed Bath and Beyond when you can go to Cook's Companion. Their prices are competitive, and their staff are above and beyond. It's always a good sign when you explain your needs to a salesperson and she shows you something that's less expensive than the product you originally thought to buy! You don't need the selection of a big box store when you can get the right good quality item at Cook's Companion.

I love this place. My wallet, however, does not. That's why I won't go in there WITH my wallet. :) Since finding this place, I've only purchased one thing, and it cost less than $5, but this store has a way of making you feel that you need things that you never knew you needed before. It's got just about every kitchen gadget, appliance, cookware, baking need, utensil, bowl, lunch carrier, etc, etc, etc, that all happen to look cool and serve some inventive purpose. Just keep in mind it's hard to leave without buying anything, and even if you don't buy anything, it's still hard to leave.

So many small-business owners in Brooklyn seem to hate their customers that I have to give a shout-out to the woman who owns this place. She's smiley and kind and seems to genuinely like the people who shop in her store. I suspect she likes her job, which I wouldn't say about the people who own many of the other little shops around! I only swing by for something maybe six times a year, but it's always a terrific experience.

I come here often to get C02 for my seltzer maker so I can't help but take a look around every time I need more C02. Sometimes this gets me in a little trouble when I decide that, yes, I do need to organize my various nuts into hermetically sealed jars, but most of the time I just WANT to buy everything and I control myself. I keep eyeing that stove top espresso maker but somehow I make it out. Luckily I have most of the kitchen supplies I need BUT if I didn't and I didn't mind spending a little extra for them to support a small business I would go here. The owner is always asking patrons if they need any help or have any questions and most people take her up on her offer to assist.

This place is awesome. It's got everything I need and a million things I had no idea even existed (but of course now need). The folks working there are friendly and knowledgeable - you can even call them up and ask for recipe advice since they all actually cook themselves (Ben Bath and Beyond this is not...). The prices are fair, but this isn't some big box retailer. Most importantly, it's enjoyable going there. They put thought into what they stock and stand by it. I don't know what people here are talking about when they said the customer service is bad; they just have personalities and talk to you like real people, unlike chain store employees who parrot a script at you. I think they're great...

This place has the best customer service. I was in there last week and exchanged 3 sodastream carbonators (so handy!) and picked up a dishtowel that I just loved. This week I decided that same dishtowel would be an awesome housewarming gift, but I didn't have time to get back to the store and they offered to deliver it to me personally. This place will always have my business! Great selection and service.
