This place pretty much lets you do whatever the heck you want. Me and my girl where  standing on top of the booth table by the end of the night just dancing like fiends and no one said anything. And it was a sunday night no less. Standard beers, some micros, the grill in the back was clutch and the burgers this place makes are legit. I know I had fun here but I honestly can't remember how much, by this point I was in a drunken haze.

I know there's a ton of amazing things to do and places to go in Charleston, but this was my unequivocal favorite of our trip.

We went in after looking for a place to kill sometime before check-in at our nearby hotel.  The bar was dark inside, and the AC was cranking enough to frost the windows.  We sat at the bar and John, our really cool bartender, got us a round of beers off the ridiculously cheap beer selection.  He made sure our drinks were never empty, and answered my ridiculously detailed questions about the cheesesteak on the menu.  (I'm on a cheesesteak life quest, and constantly search for the steak that will finally bring my epic and artery-clogging search for a real Philly Steak to it's rightful conclusion.)

My steak:  Bread, meat and cheese were all correct, and delicious.  They actually ship bread in from South Philly, and I could taste it.  The cheese was american, but I still consider that correct.  They offer onion, mushroom, sweet peppers and hot peppers.  I got everything.  My ONLY criticism is that the veg should have been chopped finer.  And thank you for not trying to put green bell peppers on my sandwich!

My friend had a sloppy, amazing bacon cheeseburger, and his fiancee had the dolphin (mahi) sandwich.  Everything tasted fantastic.

The bartender told us that it got rowdy and stupid at night when the college was back in session, but this is our new go-to place during the day.  We went back again at the end of the night and still had a blast, and John gave us the line on a bunch of other laid-back bars nearby.

I am here to say goodbye to my beloved AC's.  I went in last night and immediately left upon realizing that I am officially way too old to be in there past 9pm.  If I were a puma I would never leave that place, but being there just made me feel like the creepy guy loitering at the playground with no kids of his own.

I guess if I want to enjoy a semi-seedy atmosphere, good music, excellent food, friendly bartenders and the beer of the month that I so love about AC's, I will have to make sure and do it during lunch or early dinner and then get the hell out of there before it starts to pick up.

It was fun while it lasted, AC's.  If I don't see you around, keep truckin.

I think ACs may be one of my most frequently visited bars in Charleston. Relatively dingy in a wonderful way, beers of the month are an awesome deal, my beloved vodka-waters are usually vodka-vodkas, and their cheese fries are a godsend by 1:30 am.

I've found that weekdays are better to go as of recently, considering that weekends are just too packed for my taste and having to wait in line to get into a place where ill get drinks spilled all over me and my feet stepped on because it's so full is too much. Also, the quality of humans that tend to go on weekends are beginning to get pretty fratty.

All in all, however, this is one place that I am always happy to go to after work.

    Ain't Charlestonesque

A.C.'s is more like an SF bar, very zeitgeist-like, but without all the bicycles and weed waft.  The staff is nicer too -- when busy, which is all the time, they don't put up a sign saying "busy! go away! don't ask questions!"

The usual Charleston uniform is, at best, lightly represented here as well.  I don't recall seeing more than a few dudes sporting six-gill khakis, popped izods, and top-siders.  More garden-variety alterno-hipsters w/ tatts.  If they had messenger bikes in Charleston, most patrons would be riding them.

I recommend the "champagne"... and say hi to Andi if you're there, he should be at the bar most nights -- kinda hairy persian dude.

The biggest yelp scandal of 2007: a guy from San Francisco was the first to review AC's! This is ludicrous and offensive.

Five stars to AC's for lots of reasons: they have the best bar food in Charleston. They actually have a vegetarian Philly (angels sing!) and the fried food is, in the words of Robert Goulet, "filling but it's deeeelicious." Another reason, the music. No top 40 here. This place is punk rock all the way. Love the scrappy pool sharks that hang out there too. They will let you play but they will kick your ass, and they're always so nice about it.

Lunch time chicken philly calls my name every once in awhile and I know where to go!

Despite it's late night reputation with college students this place is surprisingly clean. The bar tender (also man who takes all food orders) is very nice as well.

The bartenders don't care about being nice, but their brunch is so fun!  Plates like "Chicken & Waffles" and an amazing cinnamon bun french toast creation (that I've had twice and loved even more the second time) are all perfect for post-Saturday night drinking.

Mimosa pitchers, too... honestly, what could be better?

For a dive bar - AC"s is it. The beer is cheap, the music is alternative, and the staff can go either way. The best, however, are the burgers. Man are they greasy and good.
My guess is that this is mainly a local hang out unless some tourists stumble in by accident. Either way -  the patrons have always been just fine when I've been there. 4 stars.

Can't go wrong with the beer of the month at AC's.  Many a drunken nights were spent here, where no matter what the day or time you always seem to run into someone you know.

although the crowd has changed some what (used to be all hipsters, then some preppy frat/sorority types started infiltrating) it still the grungy we don't have to be nice and we aren't going to be type of place.

their chili cheese fries go great with a beer.  and their sunday brunch is SOO good.  chicken and waffles with gravy, all kinds of french toasts, and loads of other good stuff.

I had to go.  Yelp made me do it.  Although I was never a regular, Kelly K summed it up nicely for me.  I was there around 3PM and a cool mix of people that appear to be regulars were there.  Everyone was nice and it is clearly a great place to drink and have fun.  I'd have been all over this place 25 years ago.  I'm glad I can say I saw the inside without feeling out of place.

If you are looking for a gritty dive bar, this is it.  Cheap Beers, Loud music, and all the "cool" croud in charleston.  They have a great Champagne selection of 100% high life and other $2 beers all the time with a Special beer of the month that is usually around $2.50.  If the late night life isn't yours, they have a really good menu of sandwiches and burgers (maybe the best burger in Charleston).  And they do a Kick ass sunday brunch that is very popular.  I had the upper king, a fried chicken and egg sandwich with sausage gravy on toast, off the chains.  But if you do order food, save your ticket, there is a number on it that pops up on the board when your food is ready, then go get it yourself.  Good for a night out with freinds, a date or a place to bring the family.  Very comfortable and accepting atmosphere.

Although I moved away from Chas 3 years ago, I can still say that this place is it. IF you like dive bars. The bathroom smells like sewer, the place makes your feel like a sardine after midnight and there is a frogger maching (although it had quit working on my last visit). The food is greasy and delicious. The staff are laidback and fun. The owner rocks..shuts down the bar for a Christmas party for the regulars and workers. I miss this place badly!

AC's is the bar you go to on King Street when you don't want to dress up or care about anything other than a good time.  That is the true culture of AC's.  Anything goes.  Play pool, have a Red Stripe, dance on the table to Journey or just do a few shots.

I really don't know what to say about this place other than it is awesome.  We went for afternoon drinks/ late lunch.  I ordered the chili-cheeseburger which was murder on my stomach, but was very delicious going down.  We also had about four rounds of drinks (Harps) and a round of shots.  The bill was split between three of us and the total came to $13 a piece.  I have heard of happy hour specials before, but this was a pretty nice surprise considering that our meals were about 8 bucks.  Either the cash register's adding machines are broken here or they really do have a sweet happy hour menu.  Either way, it worked out for me and my friends and was a good start for a night in downtown Charleston.

nice bar in the afternoon.  At night it becomes a haven of frat boys listening to that damn Weezer album they play every night.   Fun sunday brunch.  This bar is a lot more fun in the summer when all the college kids have left town.

I didn't visit A.C.'s on a weekend, so I cannot verify the shenanigans that go on here.  However, during the week, you can get one of the cheapest beers in Charleston, and the seared fish sandwich was quite good.  Everyone was friendly, and I even engaged in a bit of politics with some of the locals (it is a college town).  If you want a great place to hang out, this is a good choice.  Plus, I hear the weekends are filled with coeds ready and willing to please!!

Maybe it was an off night. It was the night before the 4th of July. This place(actually all of Charleston) was unleashed with fraternity 21 year old males and their females counterparts. I felt really out of place and pretty old. If I would've known it was going to be this bad I would have spiked my hair circa 99' and I would made a quick stop to Abercrombie that afternoon. This place seemed cool but it is true what they say that people do make the bar what it is. I almost felt like I was in Laguna or Newport beach again which is ironic because we were on complete opposite sides of the U.S. We were in aces for about a half hour before me Johnny scurried out to find something a little less Pacific Beach

ah, ac's, the place where everybody knows your name...or just wants to sell you a big bag of weed and physically remove your scrawny ass from the pool table. it's like the bar in cheers, but not. will someone please write an ode to the bathroom graffiti? pure poetry i tell you. i love this place the same way i love greasy over-salted fries at mcdonalds: with a certain clandestine obsession i'm not really proud of. and, like mcdonalds, you'll see everyone and their tat-covered bandmate here. it's an equal opportunity get-shit-faced watering hole: you got the frat boy(s) from connecticut who will brag about excavating indian burial grounds, the occasional homeless person, every shark in town, some kid you went to middle school with, and - always - good bartenders. maybe the sharks are nice about kicking your ass at pool, but, oddly, the guys who think they're sharks aren't so nice. if you're girls playing pool, don't expect Your quarters (piled high on Your table) to mean much; remember, this is also an equal-opportunity fratfest, so obnoxious drunk dudes will try to play you, whether you have quarters down or not. expect some outrageous rule changes, too. my advice: hold the table. also, the beer of the month is always $2. regardless of what you're trying to do, say, or win, that always helps.

here's an example of the inane conversations you'll find at ac's:
me: i don't have any quarters left.
friend: i have a bunch of ones cuz it was persian new year's last night.
me: i don't know what you're talking about, but i like it!
friend: part of the tradition is the young people dance and the old folks give them dollar bills.
me: uh, girl, you got that tradition from a strip club.
friend: no really! it's an old persian tradition! my uncle gave me a bunch of ones!
me: uhuh. whatever you want to call it. just rack.
