San Jose, CA
Came here on a whim one morning with a friend and seeing a restaurant packed full of people at 8am can only mean one thing: the great food! :D
Based on the recommendation of the waitress, I ordered the country fried steak with hash browns, eggs sunny side up, and toast. Ambiance was warm, friendly, and felt just like breakfast at home. The waitress was extremely nice & promptly refilled our waters. You can even ask for some green salsa to go with your breakfast to... I always love a little spicy kick! The only complaint I have is the wait but then again, good things come to those who wait, right?
And sure enough, the food came out and it was amazing. No fancy frills or anything - just a good old hearty breakfast with massive proportions. The country fried steak was nice and spongy with that oh so delicious gravy smothered on top. I loved the hash browns cause they were nicely seasoned and crunchy. And who can mess up sunny side up?
I like making prefect bites out of my food, so I used the toast to make a little country fried steak sandwich with the drippy egg yolk and crispy hash browns inside. Squirt a little ketchup, add some of that green salsa, and BAM! Best breakfast sandwich ever! I even stole a piece of bacon from my friend's breakfast as a little "cherry on top", if you know what I mean. ;] YUMMY!
Oh & the amount you pay for what you get is great is totally worth it.
Will be back soon to try out some of their other breakfast items. -
Review from Wesley S.
This place is probably a definite 3.5 stars, maybe 3.75.
The food is no frills and they don't serve anything particularly fancy here, but the food is solidly good, and they give you good portions. I had the corned beef and hash, and it was quite tasty. The biscuits were ok, but the bottoms of them were burnt, so that kind of detracted from the taste. I give them high marks for their has browns which were quite tasty. Normally I am not a big fan of hash browns, but I liked theirs. They give them a nice crunch, which I find to be crucial for a good hash brown.
They also give every table a bottle of green salsa to use on whatever you feel like, and while I don't think it goes with many items on the menu, it does go well with the eggs and hash browns. The salsa itself was a tad on the bitter/vinegary side, but it was pretty ok.
The place is in a tiny building, and if you aren't paying attention you will do exactly what I did, drive right past it! Its located in a sort of sketchy part of town, and it isnt much to look at, but they serve up pretty decent food. -

I can here the other day to enjoy a mid morning breakfast, yes this place was packed, but I came with a friend of mine and she told me this place is always pack due to the quality of food. Of course we had to wait for a table which is not an issue, because of the food quality is as good as my friend said it was I was looking forward to getting a seat and enjoying a good meal.
When we sat down the server was there giving us a menu and asking what we would like to drink, that is a good way to greet a guest to your place of business, we had order something to drink which was given to us very quick. Now when our drinks came the waitress was ready to take our order, which is what we did. My friend order french toast with corn beef hash and I ordered an omelet which is generally what I order for a place like this.
The order was completely quickly, which was hot and ready for us to eat. I will start with my friends order, she told me that everything was prepared very well and everything was the way she liked it, so for that is a plus. My food was hot, the hash browns were cooked very well, but the omelet was nothing special. I have had been food from other restaurants. I was not happy eating the omelet, but everything else was prepared very well.
I have been thinking of what I can rate this place for, but it has been very hard to come up with a good rating, so before I have this place a total failure, I will have to make another trip here to see if there is something else on the menu that might be better. As for the service at this place it is to rate, the location is in an area which is easy to get to from the freeway, another plus. The size of the restaurant is not the biggest, but it is cozy, something I would not give it a plus or negative. The cost of the food is very reasonable so that will give it a plus. I will give it a 3 star right now, but I will revisit this place again to see if it was just a fluke or if that is the way they make their food. -

Wyoming Restaurant is a good place to eat, especially for breakfast. It is a family business that has operated on Alum Rock and Jackson for more than 20 years. I've been eating their food for about five years, and I've tried many things. One of my favorites is the mushroom omelet with cheese in the middle and green salsa. I also like the New York steak with a couple of eggs. It's very tender, and you feel full when you finish. Also, every breakfast comes with sliced potatoes and all the coffee you want. In addition, they have pancakes which come with honey and real butter. Wyoming Restaurant's atmosphere is very warm because it's small place with lots of decorations on the wall and ceiling including deer head with his horns and a buffalo head on the opposite wall. Finally, this is a good place for the whole family. Everyone can enjoy the nice atmosphere that Wyoming offers.

I haven't tried anything else but the Country Fried Steak and this is the only place in the world i will go to eat it.. The pancakes are sooooo soft and the prices are pretty low. I haven't been to Denny's since i've been introduced to this place. the atmosphere is a bit crowded, but parking is great and service is not bad at all....

I love this place! Been coming here with my dad since the 90's and it's always packed...main reason: the food is delicious and huge portions! I go through my phases of only biscuit and gravy, or country fried steak with hash browns and toast, and apparenlty now I'm really into the ginormous double cheeseburger (I add bacon and their freshly-made green salsa). Overall I would totally recommend this palace, not only are the waitresses nice but they're also knowledgable about the food they serve and will most likely recommend their country fried steak. It always amazed me how quickly the food comes out even tho they're always packed...hmmm that's a great thing! The prices are very reasonable especially since the portions are huge! Yelpers this is a place must visit! :)

90% of the items on the menu here are in the range of $7-8 and some odd cents. there are a few exceptions, with some of the smaller portioned selections costing ~$5, and then there are the steaks which are all $15 flat.
didn't want any carbs so I checked out ANA'S CHICANA since it didn't come with hash or toast. it was described as "new york stripS with nopales, onions, bell peppers, etc". I asked the server wtf is a nopales and she just said it'd come in an onion and bell pepper medley... the description should have been 'a few cubes of meat that come out well done even if u order medium rare, with a CRAPload of cactus' ;( ...see my pics...ALL cactus!!!
after tax and tip it was $20 and i feel like there are so many better breakfast/lunch options for that price -

The hash browns are why I come here.
I'd recommend the Pork Steak. Their country fried steak (chicken) is bland and the sauce has too creamy a texture for me. I don't like their biscuits either, and usually opt for the toast.
Love the diner feel and the portion sizes! -

I came here for brunch with a friend... I had something from their "favorites" selection. I don't remember what it was called, but it had cactus, eggs and bacon with a side of hash browns and toast. The food was decent for the price. The only thing that stood out was their hash browns, where were really good.

Gross biscuits and gravy. Not very flavorful breakfast..had to soak it in hot sauce to eat it. Super slow service and hard to get them to pay attention to you.

My friend and I had breakfast here today. It was so yum. The service was great. Nothing was salted, which is always good because I feel like I am licking a salt rock most often when I go to breakfast. The table seemed sticky and the seating was terribly cramped. There is no room for waiting inside and it was windy outside. We ordered three eggs and it looked like it was maybe one and a half, but there is no way to tell since they were scrambled. The hashbrowns were great, the portions were so huge, maybe that made the scrambled eggs look so little? We ordered bicuits and gravy and an egg and meat dish and the two of us shared it and could eat it all.
Went back a second time and it was so much better. Great coffee and service!!! I will definitely go back. -

Pancakes are the best here!! Love seeing the regulars and the old school counters and wooden benches. Makes me feel like I am in a small town rather than a huge o'l city. The best items on the menu is the breakfast, not a particular fan of the lunch/dinner items. If your craving breakfast for dinner, I recommend this joint. My only drawback is that its small and the kitchen vents flow into the dinning area, so when you walk out the restaurant you smell like you were in a food smoker. Overall, I love it here

Very good service for taking and delivering orders. HUGE Pancakes - I couldn't finish a short stack. Typically served with margarine, the waitress brought us butter. When she noticed my little bottle of syrup [yes, I even bring my own pure maple syrup] she asked if it was sugar- free because they have that too. I don't eat bacon but my friend ordered it which looked like it was cooked to perfection.
coffee OK [but then I'm a coffee snob and it was a bit weak]. no a/c or maybe it wasn't on so it was a bit stuffy and not very well lit.
Would go back there if I was in the area. -

Breakfast is served, and it is yummy! Hold the toast I want biscuits...and grrrravay! "Buffalo's" as our family calls this place, is where we always make it to when family from out of state come to visit. My parents in Hawaii always ask, "Have you been to Buffalo's lately?" Yes there are many other fancy, well known breakfast spots in San Jose but this place just brings back memories made around the breakfast table.
I enjoy the coffee here. They cook their bacon to a crisp the way bacon should be, in my opinion. Hash browns are plenty and crispy on the outside and soft and hot inside. Omelets are alright because the cheese is Krafty...get that? Portions are generous just like the wait help.
I introduced the bf to this spot and whenever we drive here he thinks we're going through the cuts (ghetto), but don't be discouraged because it's not. It's also pretty easy to find. We'll stop here on our way to visit family in Santa Clara or Milpitas. We're already on 101 N. so we take the Alum Rock exit, go a few intersection and its there on the left!
There is almost always parking in the adjacent lot. As one reviewer already stated, the place does need to correct its ventilation situation. I love bacon but I don't like leaving smelling like bacon so much. But hey, a big brunch is worthy of some lazy couch lounging after breakfast. -

3.5 stars
I was suuuper hungry and needed breakfast pronto. A quick search led me to A Bite of Wyoming.
Since so many reviews mentioned the chicken fried steak I had to check it out. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, not too thick, and juicy on the inside! The country gravy on top, however, could use some salt. It was a little bland which took away from the chicken fried steak.
I also tried a few bites of the special of the day which was eggs benedict. I am normally not a fan of ham, but the ham they used was thick and juicy and not too salty.
The prices are super reasonable. For both plates, coffee, and OJ, the total was $20.16. The OJ was refreshing, but the coffee was not the best. Service was quick and fairly friendly.
I'll come back if I ever crave the ham for breakfast, or if I don't feel like waiting at Bill's. -

I never would have guessed in a million years that this place is a decent dining experience... I drive by it all the time for years but up until recently, I started to take notice of the place and started to read their reviews.
Let's start by saying this place is not exceptable to change and/or substitutions.. what you order is what you'll get, no modifications unless you completely don't want a certain food product on your food. There is no kid's menu, the ambiance isn't that great, the service is just OK, but if you want a bang for your buck in the morning, by all means come here!
Parking can be quite a challenge... the place is small and you can tell they do not really care about atmosphere or decor.. their menu offers variety yet limited as well.
Awesome and cheap prices, I must say. I got the chicken fried steak, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and 2 pieces of buttered whole wheat toast.. I grade it as "yummy in my tummy" very much, little did I know the washed out Smuckers bottle is chile verde!! I did not use it till the very end. Maybe a label would have been nice!
Very fast-paced and unless you need something else.. you come in, get seated, coffee it not, you view the menu, you order, the server brings you the food, and place the tab on your table.Listed in: Breakfast Spots

I don't remember the food as being anything special, but it's probably because I was distracted by the actions of one of their employees. She was sealing the paper holder for the napkins with her saliva.
She would grab the utensils, wrap a napkin around them, grab the paper holder, wrap it around the napkins/utensils, lick her finger and sealed the paper holder.

One of the best breakfast spots in San Jose! Very hard to find if you dont know what you are looking for. Don't blink or you might miss it. Family owned little "hole in the wall". Most people dont know this place unless you grew up on the East Side as I did. But don't let that scare you away. I would compare it to "Bills" in Willow Glen (if your'e not from there you probably haven't heard of it)
I've had just about everything on the menu and it is all good! I especially like the porksteak and eggs (I have included a pic). The real star of the show is the homemade salsa. If you are a breakfast lover this place is a Must Try! -
Review from Anne T.
A group of starving friends needed a place to grub and chill after a hike at Mission Peak. One of the girls suggested a diner that was 15 minutes away. Since we were a big group, there was quite a wait. The hostess told us next time to call in advance for groups of 5 or more (mental note taken!) . Opens early almost every day and closes at 2 pm. Brunch is served on all days AND they have $3.50 specials daily for Seniors and kids.
A MUST TRY: The PORK STEAK.. And the price is amazingly low!
We could have shared the pork steak between two people, but since it was about the buffalo, I tried the buffalo steak, which was quite a lot more in dollar amounts, but the slice of steak was not enough for this girl!
The hash browns practically take up half the plate and comes with two eggs however you request for it to be prepared. The pork steak comes out with a slight crust and yet soo tender and juicy! Request for the green salsa which they'll gladly bring by in a cup and try the biscuits instead of toast!
What a great meal to end a long morning! Will definitely be back for more steak! -
Review from Jamie A.
A group of us came here this past Sunday for lunch after a hike up Mission Peak so we were STARVING and ready to grub on some PORK STEAK!!! It was my first time there and unfortunately, I was not well and had a stuffy nose so wasn't able to taste anything I ate. Therefore, my rating is based on the opinions of my friends.
We had heard lots of good things about the Pork Steak so most of us got that. Mine came out and it was huge! The meat was really tender and my over-easy eggs were perfect! The biscuits were warm and fluffy.
My only complaint is they won't do substitutions. Also, the restaurant is small so if you have a group of people, the wait could be a little long.
I'm definitely going back when I get better!!! -

I wanted pancakes and ended up with an omelet lol This place is not vegetarian friendly. No spinach at all... had to settle for a mushroom and bell-pepper omelet. Was it good? Yes. Would I return? Most likely not.
Do not wear your Sunday best as you leave the place smelling like food.
There is not much ventilation and after a while, everything looks foggy. My friend said to me "is it foggy in here"? The smell penetrates your hair and your clothes! -

Wouldn't you have to agree that the south bay lacks great non- chain breakfast spots? The breakfast options in my neck of the woods in San Jose only seem to be McDonalds, Denny's, Carrow's...Thanks to Yelp iPhone application, my boyfriend and I found a solid mom and pop breakfast joint!
When I walked in I was a bit taken aback by the questionable decor. Sure, it looks like the remains of the Oregon Trail threw up on the wall. But hey, that's their theme-- to each their own. Once you get past that, you're greeted by their friendly and hardworking staff who are eager to help out newbies such as myself.
The menu is vast ranging from your general breakfast items to your extreme options such as buffalo! My boyfriend and I chose two normal breakfast meals and whoa! We were surprised how large their portions are. 2 meals can easily feed 5 hungry people!
My meal here was a bajillion times more satisfying than any breakfast item I've had at a chain diner or fast food joint. Thanks to yelp, A Bite of Wyoming Coffee Shop now has another loyal patron! I def recommend checking them out for some good ol' lil house on the prairie eats and service with a smile at very affordable prices. -

Following is some information on the famed Jackalope:
"The jackalope -- also called an antelabbit, aunt benny, Wyoming thistled hare or stagbunny -- in folklore is said to be a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope (hence the name), goat, or deer, and is usually portrayed as a rabbit with antlers. Some believe that the tales of jackalopes were inspired by sightings of rabbits infected with the Shope papillomavirus, which causes the growth of horn- and antler-like tumors in various places on the rabbit's head and body.[1]. However, creatures such as the griffin and the chimera perhaps suggest that the concept of an animal hybrid occurs in many cultures. One common southwestern species of jackrabbit is called the antelope jackrabbit, because of its ability to run quickly like an antelope; it would have been easy enough to imagine instead (for comic effect) that this jackrabbit had the horns of an antelope."
Bite of Wyoming is one of the best breakfast places in San Jose. Weekend mornings are always crowded but the service is efficient so the wait is never excruciating. The salsa that they serve in cups alongside the breakfasts is very good. Parking can be difficult on a busy Sunday but for some reason it has always worked out that someone is leaving right as I pull up.
Go for a long run in Alum Rock park and come here post run to eat. It's always a great feeling to stuff yourself after an hour and a half of over exertion.
The decor relates to the explanation of the jackalope and if you have been there then you know what I mean. There are plenty of rusty old tools hanging on the wall precariously but that should not deter the hungry breakfast connoisseur.
Are jackalopes real?
Sometimes even I am an airhead but I'll blame that on the full stomach. -

Captain Pie Hole sez:
Dammit! That does it. To proprietors and chefs at South Bay diners and family restaurants (Except Flames, and The Southern Kitchen. At least they get the gravy right); Ize had all I can standz, and I can't standz no more!
Listen! Making a decent Pepper cream gravy (also known as Sawmill Gravy in the region of it's birth, namely "Dixie"), which is used to enhance chicken fried steak and/or biscuits, as well as the Southern version of the equally venerated or despised, "Shit on a Shingle", is easy as well as cheap to make! So why am I having to shovel flavorless, pasty glop into my illustrious pie hole, just because I live in Silicon Valley?
I will share a simple recipe at the end of this rant, and hopefully, we South Bayers won't hang our collective heads in shame whenever a visitor from the Southwestern or Southern regions of our nation happens to taste our version of this pillar of southern cooking.
I wasn't sure, upon entering the joint, whether I was going to enjoy "A Bite of Wyoming" or if something might be lurking in there ready to take a bite out of me! To call the place grungy would be an understatement. However, I noted, despite the ground-in gum spots all over the carpet, the serving surfaces appeared clean and well kept. I also admired the rather typical (for a Western styled joint) collection of ranching curios and noticed what appeared to be a real fireplace at the far end of this literal hole-in-the-wall.
Service was fast and friendly, I was given a glass of ice water with my setup and was surprised to note that the coffee was actually better than the usual mud offered in dives of this sort.
Don't get me wrong, I like dives. You know, like a favorite pair of old shoes, comfy, well worn, crudely patched, and redolent of a slightly cheesy aroma which fairly shouts "bovine coziness".
After noting the almost frighteningly reasonable prices, I chose my old "Grabbing Gears" truck driving favorite, Chicken Fried Steak with biscuits. The platter arrived promptly and despite recent disappointments, I was brimming with hope that this would be the "real deal".
I tasted the gravy which looked okay with it's obvious inclusion of crumbled sausage and found something... well... strange. Another yelper recently described it as tasting "sweet". It took me a moment to identify... Jamaican allspice, (?) or something similar as the primary seasoning. Interesting, but not necessarily good in this dish. The gravy was also extremely heavy, due to over starching. Basically, yecch.
The steak, was large, considering it's price, and was decently breaded and seasoned, but the cheapness of the cut was obvious in that it was a bit gristly yet, fairly moist and reasonably tender. Had the gravy been better, this could have been easily overlooked, considering the low price.
The hash browns, freshly made, were a tad under browned but good anyway. Eggs were properly cooked at over medium. The biscuits, obviously scratch made, were stone cold (at 10:00am) and a bit dense. I'm guessing they are a lot better early in the morning when they come out fresh and hot.
I know it's hard in any business to hold a price line, but with just a little attention to detail and, I don't know... pride? This meal could have been memorably good instead of merely edible.
NOW! Damn it! Here's how you make a decent "Sawmill" or "Pepper Cream gravy.
In a heavy bottomed fry pan, heat any oil (preferably bacon or sausage drippings for flavor) and sprinkle thereupon, SIFTED, all purpose flour, (ya duznt want lumps!) whisking constantly into a smooth and bubbling paste. Don't let it get too dark. If you burn it, start over.
You're making a blond roux here, and you want just a slight golden tinge to ensure the flour is cooked through. Still whisking vigorously, pour a thin stream of milk into it until the desired thickness (or thinness) is achieved. (restaurant cooks might want to take it a little onto the thin side, because if the roux is done properly, it will thicken over time on the steam table)
SALT and PEPPER to taste! THAT MEANS TASTE IT SKEEZIX! Don't just guess. You can enhance the texture and flavors by adding, at this point, things like crumbled sausage or bacon, chopped caramelized onions, and/or herbs etc.
If you're adding powdered garlic and/or onions, just make sure you add sparingly and whisk in immediately after the milk and continue cooking for a minute or so to avoid a raw bitter taste. NOW, GOD DAMN IT! What part of this is difficult or expensive?
The next diner or family joint that does this right, gets from me, at least 4 stars if everything else doesn't suck, or even 5 if you really wow me. So git yer buttz into that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans!

There's no place like A Bite of Wyoming.
Don't come here if you need bit sized appetizers and dainty little cups to pour your tea into. It's hearty, it's heavy, it's ooooh sooo "feel-good." No matter what mood I'm in, I always find something on the menu that hits the spot.
The coffee is just right, the vibe is low key and homey, the waitress is warm without being over-bearing. And it's all charm all the way, a little quirky in decor but definitely charming.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Solid 3 stars.
The food definitely isn't the best, but for what it is, I would go back. It's near my house, it's hearty, fast, inexpensive, and better than Denny's. The vibe of a family owned business is always pleasant, and the loyal patrons lead me to believe it is a non-shady business. The employees don't act like they hate their job. My girlfriend's 3 year old kid accidentally knocked over the coffee creamer and they weren't dicks about cleaning it up. They actually cleaned it with an understanding smile and a "no problem, no big deal" attitude.
Like I said, the food isn't the greatest, but you don't go here for gourmet. The menu is extensive, so I can't judge this place solely on the 2 items my girl and I tried. My favorite thing was probably the gravy. I'd give that 4 stars.
I would recommend this place because I like helping out honest, hard-working businesses. We all need to stick together in this economic climate. The food satisfied my hunger. It'll satisfy yours, too. -

A Bite of Wyoming transported me alright...transported me to a tummy ache. Truth be told, I passed this place while driving and trying to find it. A little North Midwest...in East San Jose...? Sure! Upon entering, I felt like I was part of the Oregon Trail game on my computer. Buffalo to trade for some veggies...YES!
The decor caught me off guard. If you don't like seeing stuffed animal heads on walls while eating, skip this joint. I don't, as they can be distracting. Was seated and served very quickly on the day that I met my vegetarian friends. Yeah...what were we thinking, right? This was a bookmarked place for both of us. Don't get me wrong, the food did not suck, but the menu was heavy-heavy in meat and heavy in buffalo. Joane, the owner, was nice, but busy. After10 AM, the line was out he door.
I ordered the french biscuits which were biscuits made into french toast. Butter, powdered sugar, and oil. It was like eating funnel cake for breakfast. Good intention, but heavy on my tummy...I did not finish the plate. I appreciate the concept and fast service, but I probably won't be going back to Wyoming via this time machine.
Oh yeah...check out my pictures for the condiments on the table. Extra star for syrup, A1 steak sauce, salsa bottle-all SUPERSIZED!
BTW-this was my first real experience with the East side. I really must get out there...Yvonne...I need an East San Jo tour!Listed in: The "I told you" LIST

Went to breakfast and actually got seated right away since there were only two of us. I had the egg, hash brown, sausage combo and it was decent. I went for the biscuits over the toast, which is a first. They were ok...needed honey I think. My babes got the same as me except he got bacon and toast. The bacon looked nice and thick. Center cut they call it?
The service is whatevs but I think being super busy will do that.
Would I come back? Sure.
Would I wait to eat here? Nope. -

Sometimes, for the 1st meal of the day, this girl's gotta eat.
Breakfast is usually rushed for me. A quick bowl of cereal here. An apple and toast there. But at Bite of Wyoming, a small but charming hole in the wall, I'm not rushed. In fact, I think I make up for my lack of breakfast (calorie-wise) here, for sure.
And it's all thanks to the biscuits and gravy.
There you have it. The perfect breakfast. Hearty, filling, and well...totally unhealthy (which is why it tastes so damn good).
I don't come here very often, but when I do, let's just say no menu is necessary. -

San Jose, CA
I used to love this place. I looked forward to coming and enjoying the biscuits and gravy and the chicken fried steak. The other day I went in and the gravy was horrible. Absolutely no flavor. Not to mention the waitress was very condescending and rude to my hard of hearing grandma. I refrained from giving the bitch a big piece of my mind because I was way too hungry and than I get shitty food. Oh, hell no, lol.
They need to have signs or notes in the menu as to when dinner starts and lunch/breakfast ends. At 4:30pm I had to order the breakfast Chicken Fried Steak because they didn't have baked potatoes yet, but yet they didn't have breakfast biscuits. They have run out as early as 12 in the past. NEver again. This place sucks!!!! -

This place is a hole in the wall in east San Jose's alum rock area. Dont be fooled by its shady exterior because inside is the best breakfast you can have if you wake up early enough! They have the best biscuits, eggs, and linguisa. If youre thinking of going to Denny's or IHOP I would say you should make the trip out here and try!
The coffee is good and so is the service. There is a line after 10am so be there early!
