this is diner-style breakfast and other fare. with that in mind, i would dare say that A & T is perfect at what they do. I think the ambivalence in the ratings it receives on Yelp has more to do with what expectations people have when they visit. Two of us can eat for $20 easy, and the portion sizes are enormous.

i have had a couple of omelette dishes, with the most recent being a corned beef hash omelette. my dining companion had a gyros omelette and it was one of the best things i've had recently (A & T has greek roots that show up here and there on the menu). their eggs are never over cooked, and while the food is really basic breakfast options, it has never been greasy.

we have been five or six times now, and the waitstaff is consistently pleasant and attentive. the decor is a little worn, but cared for, such as the addition of kitschy christmas decorations on our most recent visit.

if you are in the mood for a pleasant, slightly dive-y breakfast spot in rogers park, A & T will fit the bill nicely.

The greatest little diner in Chicago.  I've been going to this place since it was a storefront with three booths and six counter seats across the street.  It's been in its present location for slightly over 20 years.

Terrific versatile menu, AWESOME omelettes, nice people run the place.  Look, if you're looking for a light gourmet breakfast served by fairies with holy water and rose petals, take your yuppie butt out of Rogers Park and get your chi-chi Sunday brunch in snooty Streeterville.  And if you want it fast go to McDonalds.

The A & T Grill is for real people who eat real food that is actually cooked for you after you order instead of having it pre-cooked so you can wolf it down your entitled throat ten minutes faster.  A great place like this should have whiner screening at the front door for those who cry when their hands get dirty.  You want delicate breakfast, go to Starbucks.

    Right on, A & T.  You ROCK.

5/5 for being an absolutely fabulous greasy spoon diner. Big, satisfying menu, fast & relaxed service, lovely staff. This place is a weekly tradition for me: usually brunch, but I'll sneak over for lunch when I can. I'll say no more. It's a classic diner. A good one. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by.

Stopped in for a late breakfast while on vacation and wandering Rogers Park.

We concurred almost exactly with Caroline's review:
-fresh ingredients (we saw someone bring in fresh herbs and tomatoes)
-huge portions (which the waitress helpfully warned us about)
    -friendly service
-food was basically unseasoned so you need your salt and pepper

Not the worst in the world, but not great.

No problem getting a seat right away, even at brunch time on a Saturday (maybe that should be a sign?) and the food comes quickly after you order but don't expect much attention after that, even if all you want is a refill on your water or drink.

The food is standard diner quality. The pancakes are huge - dinner plate size. Corned beef hash is fine. Pretty much everything I've had is just okay, nothing special.

    $10 minimum for credit cards.

The decor could really use an update. Including the Greek mythology paper placemats - they are informative but...unappetizing. I don't really want to read about where Aphrodite came from while I'm waiting for my food. Not a mealtime story.

Unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of other options for diners in the area, so if you're in a pinch it'll do but it's probably worth venturing out of Rogers Park for diner fare.

I really,  really, really wanted to like The A& T, it is only a few blocks from my house. I have been there numerous times this past year hoping it would get better, but it has only gotten worse.

The first is the decor, it is unbelievable bad (1980's South Beach worn out wicker chairs, the coffee cups are about 2 inches thick, the ladies room is pepto bismal pink and looks like it saw better days 20 years ago. The blinds are old and broken, but I was hoping the food would make up for the eyesores.

The reason I kept coming back is they have delicious salmon patties (you can get them broiled or fried) they are very tasty and since I do not eat pork, it is nice to have the salmon patties as an option for breakfast; which is why I gave the A &T two stars instead of one star.

The salmon patties is were the goodness ends, the eggs are disappointing, the last time I was there I ordered scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese. I got slightly over cooked eggs with a congealed slice of cheddar cheese on top. The pancakes are nothing to write home about and the coffee. I don't know were they get their coffee from, but the coffee is horrible. I am not a coffee snob by any means, most coffee is descent to me.

It really sad that the owners of the A&T do reinvest in their business and hire a professional chief to update their menu, hire professional chiefs/cooks who know about food and the chemistry of food to cook the food, update the decor, get ride of those awful blinds, the sign outside of the restaurant that only lights up halfway. And for gods sake get ride of the horrible dishes and that terrible coffee! They would make more money and have more customers because instead of all of the Rogers Parkers going to Andersonville for brunch we could have an awesome place for brunch in our neighborhood.

Ick! My sister was visiting and I thought we'd go out for brunch here. Ugh - I'm embarrassed that I took her there. Everything is old, but not the quaint "lived in" kind of old - more just run down. The waitress' apron and shirt were filthy. Not exactly a good sign for a restaurant. The food was typical diner food. Fine. But somehow the bill came to over $30 for two people having eggs, toast and coffee???

I live in Rogers Park and that was my first and last time eating here.

    A & T  =  Abundant & Tasty

I like this place. It's a good family restaurant, run by a Greek family.

Great omelet's, and super cheesy grilled cheese sandwiches.

note: I did date one of the waitresses for a while, but that didn't effect this review.

additional note: no, she does not work at A & T Restaurant anymore.

To me this is a 5 star neighborhood place. It's not an Ambria by any means but as I've stated before, I make only positive reviews when a place's management has proven to me that they're doing their best to serve the public and, over the last 20 years, these folks have.

This is a Greek family owned place, on the surface appearing just like so many other Greek places on the north side, but to me it's the best of the bunch. They have a very large number of delicious items on their menu. Bring a big appetite because all of their helpings are huge! I'm especially enamored with their skirt steaks because when you want one of these, theirs is the best around. Their pork chops are great too.
so is everything else I've had there.

The service is good with nice, friendly waitresses. There's plenty of seating but they're packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings so then there can be a bit of a wait. There's a small parking lot in the rear or metered spots all around.

If you're in Rogers Park and the gluttony demon has you by the throat, this is the place to soothe the savage beast!

Very abundant and very tasty.   That's what A&T is all about.

Omelettes are my love.  They are big, and full of delicious ingredients.  It comes with hash browns and toast.  Woo hoo!    But....it's a $10 omelette....which is rather expensive considering eggs are dirt cheap.

I don't think they season anything so you'll definitely need the salt and pepper.

This place is like a greasy spoon on steroids! It has all of the stereotypical pieces in place, it is a classic, complete unit that is becoming more and more rare.

You will find the older cook in the white hat and apron running the Mexican cooking crew with camaraderie and an iron fist. A sizzling flat grill behind the counter where you can sit at the bar and watch the food come out like clockwork.

One of the best parts is the collection of hardworking waitresses who for the most part, all look like they have a few miles on them. They serve up big food on big plates, and do it with distinctly cheery, waitress-like personalities. Some call you hon, some rush around in a sweat. There's the gum chewer with the 80's hair, the lovely faced zaftig who charms you and tells intelligent jokes. The older lady stuck in the 70's. Great group of gals who keep the coffee comin' whether you need a warm up or not.

About the food, oh, the food! I have never seen such a variety of choices, some wonderful, some terrifying. (Brains and eggs scare me, but that's just my personal twitch.) They have Blintzes, crepes, liver and onions, perch dinners, Monte Christo sandwiches, u-build-it omelets the size of a small puppy. Corned beef hash breakfast, low carb breakfast, name your combination of pancakes, bacon, french toast, 2 or more types of sausages. Eggs over easy, over hard, scrambled, poached,  I could go on forever. The quality of the food is wonderful in the guilty, greasy, sugary, butter latherd way that is the hallmark of a real diner. You come away feeling heavy, full of fat and sugar and completely satisfied, and maybe just a bit guilty. But it was worth it.

The owners are always willing to find you a booth, usually know your favorite spot and will take you there without asking. "Mary" and "Georgia", say "HI", they like it even if they don't show it much. Nice women, get to know them and ask about their grandchildren.

It's full of groups of older European folks who all know each other and have been friends for years, like the little elderly couple who are both round, snow white with hints of pink and drive the white Lincoln. They come every Sunday and remind me of vanilla and powdered sugar. He always helps her into her seat, so sweet. Moms and kids, gentleman couples who have moved to Rogers Park from Andersonville, blue collar painters, everyone getting along nicely.

Yes, the decor is drab, it could be turned into hip 50's Retro with a few coats of black lacquer in strategic spots, and lose the watercolors and pink 80's floral upholstery. Oh dear. But then it would be too hip and they would change their menu and the place would lose it's charm. Perhaps some things should just stay the way they are. Except the oatmeal. It's gelatinous. Yuk! The only thing there I wouldn't order. Oh yeah, and the brains and eggs.

This greasy spoon has been a Rogers Park staple since forever and it's easy to see why: huge menu, great specials and bottomless coffee, all at reasonable prices.  There's something on the menu for everyone and for those of us on a diet it's easy to find something fitting our needs.  The staff is wonderful and once you've become a regular you've pretty much become family.  And what a family you'll belong to!  The clientele is as diverse as the menu, just like the neighborhood.  A&T IS Rogers Park in a nutshell.

Only two things drop my rating to four stars and they are minor.  For starters, the place looks like it hasn't had a makeover since 1984.  It's diner-chic, but a little sprucing up might be nice.  Also, if you go on Sunday in the early afternoon expect the owners' extended family to be there and the kids can sometimes get a bit rowdy when they get bored with adult conversation as kids are want to do.

Relatively typical diner food, although the selection is large, as are their portions. The boy and I LOVE their chicken soup (I think it's the Greek lemon chicken soup), and as an omelet aficionado, he praises A&T's omelets. They are huge!

Parking is sometimes tricky, and it does get crowded on weekend mornings, but the staff is friendly and prompt. It's a comfy, cozy place to stuff your face.

I remember when the A&T was a tiny little storefront place across the street from where it is located today.   The food was fresh and perfectly prepared back then, and the owners always had a smile and a refill of the coffee for their many customers.

That's why it is so great to still visit the A&T in a larger location that reflects the hard work, great food and first-rate service these nice folks provide.  The A&T has been a warm spot in Rogers Park for many years, and I hope it always will be.

I had to be in Evanston well before the sun came up one day and asked where I could find a great diner meal afterwards.  A&T was recommended and I was in the mood to try a new place.  We passed it quickly while riding the southbound CTA 22 Clark bus from Howard, but I leapt off at the next stop and snapped a few pics walking back toward the restaurant.

Situated in the heart of the working class part of Rogers Park, A&T is a great breakfast place option with what must be some of the largest pancakes known to man.  The food is ok and the service is so friendly it reminds me of the nice people who live in the deep south. Take a look at the pics.

OK, I am dating myself here when I state that I have been going to A&T since it was located in a single-storefront across the street (almost 30 years ago).

Mary was a young woman and I do believe Georgia is her daughter.

Anyhow, I loved the place then (at. . . 12. . . wow) for their magnificent real turkey club sandwiches and American fries.  They still roast several turkey breasts and hams each morning.  And those greasy A. fries -- oh dear, they are a shining, ketchup-y joy to behold.

There's nothing at all 'ette' about the omlettes.  One will easily serve two people and (if your into cold eggs) there'll be leftovers.

On weekend mornings and early afternoons you will wait a while for a table or booth.  Worth the wait though.

Warning:  Be nice to the waitress, trust me, I know things ;)

    Food ruined my appetite.

That doesn't even make any sense, does it? I know. But that's what happened. The food at A & T Grill ruined my appetite.

I just wanted a quick tasty breakfast. I didn't care about the dated decor, the misspelled signs on the door/in the window, or ambiance of any kind. I could only see the tasty breakfast I was sure was coming my way.

The place wasn't packed, but it took about 25 minutes for us to get our food. There were a few other tables of people who were seated after us that got their food before we did.  We waited patiently, but 25 minutes? Really? For 2 omelettes with toast? The waitress didn't come to volunteer an explanation, & only stopped to say anything to us because my friend interrupted her hasty walk past our table.  She quickly snorted, "It's coming."

When it finally came, I noticed that the toast we ordered didn't come with it. The toast sat on the front counter in front of a man I presume to be the manager of the place. He didn't bother to mention it to her as she walked past him to & from the kitchen/counter area. When she finally remembered & brought it to us, it was cold. I didn't even bother trying to eat it.

The omelette I ordered came hot & loaded with melted cheddar cheese. I ate a few bites & thought I liked it....until I noticed that it also had a stray piece of some kind of mystery poultry and lots of broccoli in it. Gross. My appetite died in that moment. As we got ready to leave, the waitress (who offered a lame "I'm sorry" as her explanation for the crappy service we were getting) asked me if I wanted a to-go box. I looked at that plate with disdain. Hell no I didn't want to take that mess with me. My appetite was GONE.

As I write this, it's about 7:30pm. I haven't eaten anything since. Ugh.

    I won't eat there again.

I decided to drop in this place on a whim for lunch on a Monday.  They had a sign up front offering a free bowl of soup w/ any sandwich(most around $5), but that includes burgers also.
I have to say, this place is 50 yrs old, (1961, but not in a bad way.   So, please don't walk in expecting something shiny and new.  Its clean, very clean, and has very friendly and above average service.  Bathrooms are super clean also, but could use a remodel like the rest of the place.  But, I expect that's why they haven't had to raise prices.
Its a typical diner menu, but expect good size portions.
I would definitely recommend this as a very good down to earth diner.  Good portion sizes and friendly service.
One caveat, not much in the way of choices for a dessert, coffee is hot and plentiful.

We tried out the A&T Grill one Sunday morning.  The menu is robust, the service is swift and the prices aren't scaring my wallet.

I had pancakes and eggs - the pancakes were light, fluffy and plentiful.  My s-o got an omelet, which he gobbled up to the last bite.

Ahhhh the A&T. Right next to the Rogers Park Metra stop, this is one of my favorite places to stop in during cold wintry weekday mornings for a quick cup o joe, maybe a light breakfast of bacon & eggs. I keep it simple here 'cause it's a simple place - a classic diner, complete with 1950's booths and a breakfast bar. The coffee tastes like folgers, the omelettes are huge, and the menu has almost anything you could want for breakfast/brunch. The wait staff is great - they love a good conversation and take care of you if you're a repeat customer.

I was REALLY looking forward to going here, liking it alot and making it one of my regular spots. I love greasy spoons. IMO, they have the most satisfying food.

    Oh well.

The service was TERRIBLE. went there on 4th of July Monday. It wasnt crowded. A bunch of cops walked in with us. Another group of abt 6 ppl and some couples came in after us. ALL of them got their food before we did.

We didnt order anything fancy, just omelettes.

While we waited, the waitress never returned to refill our water or ask if we wanted more juice or even to explain why our food was taking so long. I finally stopped her as she was walking by us again to ask what was going on.

She gave me a pout like I was hassling her and just said tensely "its coming" and shuffled away.

My friend ordered an omelet with bacon, spinach and mushroom. There was broccoli and chicken in it besides the ingredients she ordered.

The waitress offered a quick "Im sorry" and that was the end of that. Again she didnt ask if we needed water or more OJ. She didnt give us any condiments. (I had to ask her for ketchup).

To top it all off, our order came with toast. She left our toast on the diner counter for abt 20 mins. As we ate, we wondered how long it would take her to realize that our toast was sitting on the diner counter. Once she finally realized it, she simply brought it over and said "sorry" again. Didnt offer new toast, just gave us the cold toast.

As an ex restaurant mgr, Im pretty forgiving and usually good ass food will wash away the memory of bad service in my mind. The food was mediocre at best. How you make bland breakfast food?

The only thing that gives me any comfort is that two other groups of diners had long waits for food, and one couple got a screwed up order as well. At least it wasnt just us.

No one offered an apology or a discount. The woman ringing us didnt ask us how our meal was. Nothing.

This was just a comedy of errors. Im hoping this was an isolated incident. But I wont be back to find out.

It's a greasy spoon, but I LOVE it! It's proximity to my house is a huge plus and the huge portions make me swoon when I'm  in need of some seriously-bad-for-me Sunday brunch. My favorite is the breakfast wrap/burrito things. I'm also a fan of the waffle. My mother-in-law got the "special" denver omlette and even though we never figured out what was so "special" about it, we still made short work of it. The other thing I love is the waitresses. They range in age but all are charming and attentive. Yay for good service!

I like coming here for breakfast with my mother, I've been coming here for years. This is the place for giant omelet's so big you can't just finish in one sitting. You have to take the rest of your meal home for later and walk all that off. Lot's of variety on the menu, the coffee is decent and  just keeps on coming. Friendly service, the waitress are nice and fast and remember you and your order too. The pancakes are huge with Lot's of great topping's too.

The portions are huge, the prices pretty low, the food was really good, and the waitress was attentive (especially with the coffee refills) but didn't hover over us.  The hash browns were delicious and the omelets filled 3/4 of the plates and had tons of stuff in them.  Friendly employees and good conversations to eavesdrop on.

Delicious, diverse menu, waitresses and management with great personality, quick service, huge portions, and a bowl of delicious soup with each lunch/dinner meal! This traditional Greek neighborhood diner is a favorite in our household. It's not the Best Food Ever in all the World, but it's reliable, and tastes home-cooked. The omelettes are huge (maybe a little too huge) and filled with tasty ingredients. The chicken noodle and vegetable soups are favorites. I love the grilled cheese with tomato and the tuna melt, and the fries are always perfect.

It's nothing to write home about. The service is good. The food so-so but that's offset by the gigantic portions you receive. I wish they had better coffee. There just aren't many restaurants like this in the neighborhood, so the place thrives. We go there for breakfast on the weekends occasionally.

Decent not terrible or excellent.  Overpriced for breakfast but you get a lot food but the quality is not there.  Lunch portions are smaller but better tasting.  This place confuses me.  I don't know what to think.

A rare, retro style Chicago diner. Their menu offers a lot of choices. The decor is definitely not fancy (looks like it's unchanged from the 1970's), but they serve up a good omelette (try it with the Greek toast and french fries!) , and the boyfriend enjoys the burgers and soup there. Service is always friendly, and quick, and the food lives up to their name "Abundant & Tasty"

This place is pretty hoppin on a Sunday morning. The omeletes are huge and the potato pancakes with home made apple sauce are delectable. There are some Greek selections on the menu. Its nice to see some variety on the diner menu. The service is good, the waitresses know how to handle the busy brunch crowd. The food comes fast. I haven't had anything from the lunch menu, but I've seen it and I had to fight the urge to steal a fry from the neighboring table.

Abundant and tasty is right! This is a diner people, why are you ordering the chicken kabob pita?? Nonono. What you need is coffee, eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast, maybe some pancakes, french toast, or an omelette. That is all. A&T beckons me during the coldest days of the year with hot coffee and friendly fast service.
