Even though there is an A&J Restaurant in Maryland I have refused to skip over Virginia lines for cheap Chinese eats. However a California road trip and a random mobile yelp search helped me see the error of my ways because their Taiwanese beef noodle soup is dy-no-MITE!
I don't know how to describe the taste but it reminds me the "kiddie" version of the Bon Bo Hue my dad uses to make for me (just a touch of spice, no blood, no tripe). Served with steamed greens and a big glob of thick cut noodles, eating it was like a big warm (AND CHEAP!) hug to my weary body.
I will definitely be making a trip to Maryland sometime in the near future. Who wants in? -

I was feeling like soup and have had this place bookmarked to so long, so decided to try. This is a Chinese beef noodle place, so had the spicy beef and tendon soup. You have a choice of noodle and I elected for the thin noodle (easier to spin). It was served with a weak tea.
Overall, it is ok. Not a place I would go out of the way to visit, but good, hearty soup. -

Irvine, CA
The food isn't anything great, but it's very affordable. They keep their prices low because their portions are small. I actually only come here when I'm stuck eating in Irvine and there's not enough time to drive back to the Asian cities.
Everything served here is what you can practically make at home yourself (frozen dumplings and green onion pancake anyone?). Dishes are on the oily side; I haven't eaten one dish here that wasn't over greased. Even the small pickled veggies were covered in oil.
If you haven't been to A&J, it's worth a try. Lines are long, but turn around time is pretty fast. -

AOK
For whatever reason, I thought the location is Diamond Bar was better. The food was AOK when I came.
~Ja jiang mian
2 Stars,Thin noodle. It barely came with any sauce and the noodle was extremely under-cooked.
~Wonton with spicy chili oil-4 Stars
This was my favorite of the night. I did have to ask for more of their specialty sauce.
~XLB
2 Stars at most and even my little one didn't like it. Super dry.
~Spicy Beef Noodle Soup
2 Stars. Not really spicy and the meat was not tender nor was it very tasty. The broth was AOK.
Note to self...No more Chinese/Taiwanese food outside of SGV. -

The hubby and I love coming here after a nice work out at the 24 hour fitness in Irvine Spectrum Center. Shoot.. I don't know about him, but I work out just so I don't feel guilty about eating the yummy goodness at this place.
Anyway, on to the yummy goodness in order of yummy-ness!
5 stars:
- thousand year old egg with bean curd
- pan-fried beef bun
- seaweed and bean sprout salad
- hot tea
4 stars:
- pan-fried dumplings
- spicy beef noodle soup
3 stars:
- sesame bun with sliced beef
- thousand layer pancake
2 stars:
- powered short ribs
Sesame bun with sliced beef was missing something... like cilantro! And the bun was a little dry, but tasty nonetheless. I was hoping the thousand layer pancake would have more flavor, but once I dunked it in my spicy beef noodle soup broth it was A-okay! I wouldn't recommend the powdered short ribs. It looks reeaaally good when they first bring it out, but your tastebuds will only be disappointed.
4 stars overall because it's dericious, cheap, and in small portions so you can try a little bit of everything. "Yay! I'm a fan." -

I don't have to say much about A & J except that it's cheap, they speak to you in Chinese, and the food is good.
I recommend getting the spicy beef noodle soup and the radish cakes (loh boh si zu gow).
Cash only. I will be back. -

Favorite Restaurant IT is awsome. they serve the best noodles and chicken. The only thing that sucks is the servers. They don't even really talk to you (they talk only Chinese).

They have great, authentic beef noodle soup here with soft, well-flavored pieces of beef and chewy noodles. The broth itself is slightly spicy and if you prefer to have it hot, a dash of chili pepper sauce will do the trick nicely.

For the most part, I equate Taiwanese food w/ dumplings. I came here and tried their wonton in spicy sauce (yum! ~$7), shanghai wonton (blah, ~$7), thousand layer bread (a-ok, ~$2), spicy beef w/ tendon w/ thick noodle (meh, ~$7), fried chicken w/ rice (meh, ~$7), cucumber salad (a-ok, ~$2), and shredded tofu something or other which was my error as I wanted the pig ear (blah, ~$2). Make sure to dip the thousand layer bread into the wonton spicy sauce; it's divine. Also, although some of the dishes are labeled spicy, I was able to tolerate the heat. And, yes, I'm a weenie when it comes to spicy food.
Other important info: parking can become hairy, small and underwhelming interior, cash only, menu in english and chinese but order form in chinese only, clean and bright, and same plaza as Taiko and Chinese Garden. -

Irvine, CA
There is something about this place that reminds me of the restaurants from some kind of movie. Like it's super late at night, and lonely people are just trying to grab a quick meal before heading off to home. I get this vibe from A&J which isn't necessarily a bad thing but what I'm trying to say is that you will leave here full but maybe not satisfied.
I usually always get the spicy beef noodle soup which always fills me up. It is served piping hot with lots of thick noodles and a good, strong broth. I have to admit, it's probably the best Taiwanese style beef noodle soup you're going to get in Irvine. But besides the noodles here, I don't really find anything else super tasty or worth getting.
Everything is super cheap here though (it's cash only) and you will stretch your dollar a lot here. 3/5 -

I'm so sad, I used to love A&J. 4 years ago, the food was consistently good, but after my last trip here, something definitely felt lacking. The radish pastry didn't have as much radish and the noodles were...empty. Words truly escape me and I know not how to convey the absence of deliciousness that once was there.
That's not to say A&J is bad. It's not. It's authentic Taiwanese and you'll get your money's worth (and a full stomach). It's just that...it used to be so much better.Listed in: The Jewel That Is Irvine

wowza - I've been going to A&J Restaurant in Arcadia for a while now and I had no idea there was one closer by home.
the service was a bit slow, but i have to say i don't ever expect a whole lot from asian restaurants :)
we ordered
{GREEN ONION PANCAKE} so yummy and flakey
{1000 LAYER PANCAKE} i love dipping this into my beef noodle soup - great flavors
{BEEF NOODLE SOUP} seriously one of my favorites, they have the best 'fat' noodles
{PAN FRIED DUMPLINGS} these little dumplings are shaped like little flat egg rolls - love them. -

Of course found this place on yelp; it is a decent spot for really cheap eats; if you are open to a wide variation for the quality then you'll be fine to dine here.
Spicy noodles - B+
Dumpling in spicy sauce - B+
Beef Bun - D - (horrible, frozen )
Cheap eats, not sure if I will return. -

Hole in the wall, small, inexpensive, authentic. My kind of place.
This place has an amazing beef noodle soup. They even have their in-house handmade cut noodles. The texture is great. A bit on the thicker side, but chewy but fully cooked.
They serve a variety of Taiwanese dishes, and some small plates of dim sum items as well.
If you want Taiwanese food in Irvine, I would say this is the best place to get it. Hands down.

Review from Erin T.
I don't know if I would call this place Taiwanese, it's more..pan-chinese even though that's not a real word. There's a little bit of Shanghai, a lot of Taiwanese....and a little other provinces thrown in there. Regardless, this place is hella (wow haven't used that word in awhile...oh bay area I do miss you) amazing.
I didn't realize how much i liked this place more than Liang's kitchen until today when we went for dinner. We had the spicy beef noodle soup, scallion pancake, and spicy pig ear (gross sounding, I know, but it's sooooo good)
The spicy beef noodle soup never disappoints. There's a lot of noodle, tender pieces of beef, and a delicious, but not overly salty or overpowering broth. I always prefer the thick noodle to the thin noodle. The scallion pancake is....like every other scallion pancake in flavor, but it's much thicker compared to Liang's which is why I prefer A & J's. Their pigs ear is literally my favorite thing on the menu. I've had the one at the spicy restaurant across the street next to Sam Woo's, and theirs is just spicy...but too thickly cut, and too tough. A & J's is cut into bite size pieces with a little green onion to balance out the flavor, and so soft it almost melts in your mouth. Again, this is really more for adventurous eaters but I really challenge everyone to try it.
I've also had
fried chicken over rice - you'll see this in every review but asian fried chicken is just incomparable
xiao long bao - can you believe you can't get this everywhere in Irvine? Blasphemy!
soybean milk and chinese donut - the chinese breakfast of champions!
The service is always good, the food is cheap and the food is just great.
The only two things that Liang's has over A & J's is surprisingly good boba, and veggies... -

My favorite restaurant is Mas' Islamic Chinese food in Fullerton but it's a long drive and I'm glad I found this hole & the wall (Thanks Yelp!) to hold me over til my next drive to Fullerton.
I tried the beef noodle soup that everyone raves about and it was my LEAST favorite thing. Honestly, I wouldn't even order it again. I'm not Asian so maybe I dont appreciate it as much as everyone else but it was just bland to me. Especially compared to their noodles in hot & sour sauce...that was delicious!
I loved the scallion pancake, especially dipped in the hot & sour sauce. I really liked the steamed dumplings and pan fried beef bun as well.
I really wanted soup dumplings and I thought I heard they have them but I couldn't find it on the menu? Help?
Their menu is a lot of noodles and more noodles...but it was definitely tasty and I'll be back. -

My family has been coming to ban4 mu3 yuan2 (I have no idea where the English name "A & J" comes from) since we moved to Tustin, which was in 1998. We almost always go during weekend brunch time for the Taiwanese breakfast items, although food is good at any time of day. We made many a trip on Sundays after Chinese school in the morning. Good times!
You won't find many rice dishes here, because it is primarily a noodle/pastry shop. I highly recommend the zhua1 bing3 (pull pastry? not sure of the English name) and the shao1 bing3 you2 tiao2 (ask a Mandarin-speaking friend). The beef noodle soup is fairly spicy but very popular; I like the one with half meat, half tendon. All of the various side dishes are great too, and there is considerable variety. Try the savory (i.e. salty) soymilk! Have some wontons!
To order dishes, you have to mark a long paper strip order form, indicating the quantity you want of each item. HOWEVER, this order form only lists dishes in Chinese. I am aware that they do have printed menus with English on them, but we are never even given those since we know Chinese. I have heard of non-Chinese-reading people using the bilingual menu to match up with the order form and mark their choices that way (note that the order form is not numbered, so you can't just match up corresponding numbers), which seems like it would either be really fun or incredibly frustrating (depending on your patience and attitude). If the waitresses aren't too busy, they might be willing to take your order in person, although that is definitely not the norm.
This restaurant is always packed, and if we come during peak hours, waiting for 15-30 minutes is practically inevitable (no reservations allowed). The restaurant's appearance hasn't changed much in over a decade. It's very simple and plain; nothing fancy but clean. I did notice during my latest visit that they got new bowls, plates, and teacups though. The restaurant has also had the same few ladies working since we first started coming here, which includes a very sweet Hispanic busgirl (who must be decently skilled at Chinese listening comprehension after working with an almost exclusively Chinese-speaking staff for over ten years). Notably, the waitresses also speak a considerable amount of Taiwanese.
I absolutely love the food here, and have probably made over 100 visits over the years. Everything is just so tasty, and there are a lot of items here that I just can't get anywhere else (in Irvine at least). Service isn't anything spectacular by Western restaurant standards, but I would say that 95% of the patrons are Taiwanese and don't really care about such things. This place is as authentic as they come, and almost makes you feel like you are eating in Taiwan! =) -

I've never really lived more than a few miles from here my whole life, but I've never eaten here until only recently. This place serves quality food, at a quality price. I have returned, and will keep returning as long as their dumplings stay this delicious and cheap!

Been coming here ever since i was a tiny tot.
The soymilk and beef noodle soup hold some of the dearest memories from my early days. I would head to A&J after chinese school on sundays, and would always get the soymilk (add sugar myself), and get the dumplings!
For dinner, the spicy beef noodle soup is the best around. Best I've ever had, aside from homemade...of course. Better i.m.o than any of the typical spots (i.e.: guppies, liang's, nice time deli, etc.)
Spicy wontons are also a huge hit. Went here with business clients as well as just the luncheon, catchup spot. The dumplings are fried to perfection, the beef wraps are amazing (could sit there and eat the whole plate), and obviously their small dishes start things off right (i.e.: spicy cumbers, fu zhu (dont know how to say it in english), 1000yr old egg, and tofu).
Definitely give it a try. The staff is amazing and recognize me everytime i walk in. I've grown up with them, and A&J def grew on me. -

The only two things I don't eat for breakfast are lunch and dinner -- Anonymous
And now I can say I had Taiwanese for breakfast :) Met my new Asian Food Mentor (a kick ass favorite Yelp friend) for a 10:00AM Sunday meal at A & J's. A great use of my time to spend 90 minutes with such an intelligent, lovely person! I basically handed her the menu to order...and comfort food goodness flowed:
Spicy cucumber
Beef bun (very rich)
Spicy wontons/dumplings
Fried pork chop over rice
Cold soy milk
Yummy, yummy, yummy start of the day! Only downside is no chance for a Sunda Mimosa here :( And I need to eat the beef tendons before they get cold. They have a TENDON-cy to get chewy when cold (I've been dying to use that joke all week!).
This is really what Yelp is about...meeting cool new folks who show you cool foods they love. I like these individual encounters far better than those massive group events...the Yelpers I have met have all been different people for sure but with a common thread of an insatiable curiosity about the world of food, and frankly of the world at large. I don't need "free" alcohol, food or trinkets to know I'm part of a very interesting community.
And given the controversy over the Observatory event...can I please at least dispel one myth that just makes my head explode whenever Yelpers repeat it. The events, the food, the alcohol, the trinkets; are not free!!!! Unless Yelp gives you a residual check or a piece of the stock, you pay for these events with your reviews (which are the only thing on this site given away for free) and your participation in the community. Yelp uses your free content and page views to sell ads, to sell business pages, to sell your personal info. Does the beer or cheap "swag" really compensate you for your time on the site? I make $50-70 an hour at my "real" job. No way does any free event come close to compensating me for my time doing reviews (and probably not even the price of gas to get to the event!). But I still participate because it is a fun hobby and I have met such wonderful, amazing people...Economics 101 lesson is over now kids :) -

LOVE this place!!
the wonton in spicy sauce is really good
the juicy beef buns are full of flavor and are amazingly delicious!
the chicken and mustard greens noodle is very light but still has good flavor, very "qing", perfect for after eating heavy korean bbq the night before and some drinking
quick service and really affordable prices.
i love my people's food :D -
Review from Sam Y.
Known for their spicy beef noodle soup ("niu rou mian"), this was a place we had to venture because of my boyfriend's love for beef noodle soup. Especially since it's so hard to find a good Asian restaurant in the Irvine area that once I found the raving reviews and friends recommendation to this restaurant, I was happy to try it out.
Little did I know that they had Chinese breakfast! That is, their "you tiao" aka Chinese cruller/donuts, salty soy milk, pancakes and much more! We both ordered the traditional spicy noodle soup - my bf loves the thick noodles and I the thin ones. We asked for extra pickled cabbage ("suan cai") and totally inhaled everything.
The interior totally gives me an old school Hong Kong/China diner vibe which is lovely. The staffs were middle aged Chinese ladies who reminded me of my own sweet mother. If you love your mother, give these ladies extra tips, yeah? ;) That is, only if they did't provide shitty service, which I highly doubt! -
Review from Andrew N.
One cold winter day, my dad and I were trying to find something warm to eat. I remembered hearing about A&J so I decided to take him here. We looked into A&J and saw a crowded restaurant where everybody had their heads down eating bowls of hot noodles. It looked pretty popular so we waited around a few minutes before we were seated.
I got the spicy beef and tendon soup with thick noodles. The meat and the tendon were very soft, tender, and tasty. It was really fatty, which I love. The broth tastes good if you're just sipping it by itself but it tastes kind of bland when you eat it with noodles/beef; I had to put a bunch of chili to make it more flavorful. The noodles were not that good. It was kind of rubbery and didn't taste that fresh.
The thousand layer pancake was bland but good because it was simple and fried. It tasted better when dipped in soy sauce and chili sauce.
A&J was just alright to the both of us - we left A&J full, but not satisfied. I made it up to my pops by taking him to Cream Pan. -

Food is ok, I recommend their beef pan cakes. Side dishes such as pig ear are also great.
Service is so so. Once you got food don't expect any service after that.
Don't expect the place to be clean, and I suspect heavy use of MSG.
But for the price and taste. It's a 3 star for me. -

1st time at Taiwanese style breakfast . we ordered
ma jiang mian ( dzi ma mian ) - which is basically peanut sesame noodle it is soo good i really liked this dish, the peanuts & sesame really flavor the noodles well and you don't need any other seasoning. it is slightly sour but apparently the noodles are supposed to taste like that. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
ja jiang mian - kind of like the korean cha chang myun. this dish came with the meat sauce and some sliced cucumbers and the vegetable with the yellow round thingie on the bottom. this dish was good as well and i enjoyed the meat sauce that came with the noodle.
niu rou mian - sliced spicy beef noodle soup. my first time trying the dry version, i think i prefer the soup version more, but the noodles still tasted good although it wasn't very spicy at all.
dan bing - this one is just omelette wrapped with thin crispy pancake taste good with light soy sauce.
yau tiu - dzi ma( chinese donut) - i dont remember the name of this one but apparently taiwanese style eat their yau tiu differently because instead of dipping it into their dzuk ( rice porridge) they eat it wrapped with another fried sesame phyllo dough. HIGHLY SUGGEST this one as well. you dip this one into the warm soy milk such a nice contrast.
dou jiang - warm soy milk. ahh this one so nice because its great to wash down all those oily stuff right after you eat it. and its fresh !!!!
fan tuan - kind of like a sushi roll except inside is pickled greens, yau tiu, and shredded pork ( rou soung/ yuk sung ) so delicious i would eat this one everyday. even better is that it is nice and warm, and crunchy and soft all at the same time. yummyyyy.
another noodle dish - i do not know what the name of this one is except it is cold and was served on a small dish it is sesame oil flavored. and had slices of carrot and cucumber in it.
Another plus is that the customer service is very nice my friend and i came here and literally sat there for about 20 min. before our 2 other friends came, i did not sense any annoyance or eyes glaring at me waiting for me to order ( while at other places I usually would )
Went above & beyond my expectations i love this place and would come here all the time if i lived closer.
prices are SO REASONABLE. i wish to come here for dinner as well.
i love this place and is already one of my top breakfast restaurant even though I have only come once.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Those wontons in chili oil are legit. I could come for those alone. The beef pancake roll was a bit dry with waaay too many onions. But the beef noodle soup was very good, very rich broth and loved the thick noodles.

Irvine, CA
This is probably my 4th or 5th time at A&J's and something has changed about this place that took it's spark away. It could be that I went during closing hour but regardless it should be good anytime of the day. I got the beef & tendon noodle soup and usually it's phenomenally good and jampacked full of flavor. It was kind of lackluster and I think the portion was slightly smaller. Ever since 101 opened up across the street, I think A&J has serious competition for beef stew noodles.
Pros
-Authentic feel and decor
-Wide selection of Taiwanese food
-Beef roll is better than Liang's
-Fast service
Cons
-No preserved veggies on the side!! (ONLY 101!!! Liang's has it in the soup, but not on the side)
-CASH ONLY
-Only open to 9
-Usually has fobby workers so English speakers may not be able to order that well
-They usually talk shit in Mandarin haha but it doesn't define their service, just you kind of feel wary
Current rating: (2/10/12)
1. 101
2. Liang's
3. A&J -

Overrated. Pork dumplings were pretty good, spicy beef soup was good but the quality of the beef was poor and it was tough. Xiao long bao left a lot to be desired (I used to live in Shanghai), hold off and go to Din Tai Fung in Arcadia.

I love this A & J location. Their beef noodle soup - thick noodles rock! Best beef noodle soup hands down. Their fried chicken over rice is also very good. The A & J location I'm accessible to is the Cupertino one, which is also good but their fried chicken over rice doesn't have any chopped greens in the rice, like the Irvine location. I try to frequent this joint whenever I'm in town --highly recommended!

I love A&J. It's probably my go to Chinese restaurant in Irvine.
I usually get Hongshao beef noodle soup, or the zhajia mien. The spicy wontons are a MUST! It's a small order so you can definitely get it with your meal.
I like eating breakfast here when I'm hung over and need to recover. Breakfast starts at 10am on weekends. Usually just get the standard, salty soymilk and you tiao.
Can't beat the price for what you're getting! -

So I tried everything here that was recommended on yelp - the spicy wontons, the beef noodle, and the thousand layer pancake. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed with everything. I mean the food was okay, but nothing great. Maybe because I'm not Chinese and I didn't grow up eating this kind of food, but it was pretty bland tasting. I was the most disappointed with the pancake though. It just tasted like fried batter. I was really confused because I thought they made ours wrong. I found myself lathering it in soy sauce and chili sauce to give it some kind of flavor. Great deals, but food is meh. I really liked the spicy cucumber though. Refreshing!

My first time trying Taiwanese food was at this place and I LOVED it!
Awesome awesome flavor in everything I ordered and good portions. I can't remember what I ordered since every time I'm here, someone orders for me in Taiwanese and I just eat what they get. Hahaha, the perks of having Taiwanese friends.
I've been lucky to not have to wait, but I've seen it get crowded.
It's a really good place to eat and the best part? It's cheap :) -

Irvine, CA
I've been a number of times and my only two complaints about this place are the prices (~3-6/small plate and the portions aren't very large) and the service (hit or miss).
Other than that, this place is about as Taiwanese as you can get. We always start off with small plates for appetizers, including shredded tofu (literally cut into little strips), sliced pork ear (marinated in an anise-based marinade, most likely), shredded seaweed salad (not too spicy at all) and sliced cucumbers marinated in rice wine vinegar and garnished with red chilis.
For our entrees, we almost always order the beef noodles and other beef rolls/buns, etc. If we're there for breakfast, we get both the Chinese churros and sesame flat sandwiches with beef, along with unsweetened soy milk. -

Best Taiwanese beef noodle place that i have been to in all of Orange County. I guess I took it for granted and didn't realize how good it was until I had Chef Hungs in Diamond Jamboree Plaza. A lot of small dishes to choose from. The green onion pancake is good with the soy milk. The spicy wonton is not bad either. Cash only restaurant with pretty fast service. Seats a pretty good amount of people for small or large groups.

I heard about this restaurant from a Taiwanese friend and I wanted to try it. My brother, my Taiwanese friend and I went here today for a late lunch (2:15 P.M.)., because we were too late for dim sum at China Garden which is in the same shopping plaza. So, I was happy when the Taiwianese friend suggested we go to this restaurant. My Taiwanese friend ordered for us. We had six dishes including a beef and tendon soup which is a Tawainese specialty, one soy milk and a teapot. All the dishes were very good. All of the dishes consisted of either noodles or rice flour component which I believe is common in Tawainese cuisine.
The total bill for the lunch was only $26.99. It is also Cash Only, so it is best you know that before you come here.
I would go here again.
