This place is great. If you live on the NW side don't bother with chain grocery stores. This place will beat their prices. The produce is great. The bakery items are wonderful. The ethnic food selection is huge.
The place is always packed, but there aren't the long checkout lines you'll find at Jewel.
The only thing is the parking lot is small so if you go during prime shopping (such as Saturday morning) parking is a challenge. I normally go in the evening after dinner and I don't have a parking problem.
I also go to Family Fruit Market on Cicero but A&G has a much better selection of paper goods, cleaning supplies, etc. -

A & G Market have the best subs in town.
The bread is bakery fresh & they put on just the right amount of meat & cheese. Price is right too! -

I have been going to A & G for years. The produce and fish are fresh. I just bought a red snapper the other day and made a delicious Brazilian dish. Some of the workers are bitchy. Learn some customer service skills douche bags. I love the nice Polish lady that handles the carts people should tip her.

This place to me is much better then the other local fruit market, Caputo's.
I've been coming here for quite some time, and I mainly come for the deli, and then some fruits. When I'm here, I don't have to wait too long at the deli, and when I buy their fruit, it lasts up to 2-3 weeks.
Only downside is 2 things... 1)When they introduced the carts with the Quarters (like aldi's), that was big turnoff. I mean the little old polish lady retrieves them anyways, so what's the difference? 2) Their parking spots are not wide enough and half the time there are customers who can't park properly and ruin it for others. -
Review from Liz W.
Awesome grocery store. They have pretty fresh produce, a good deli, and bakery area. The store can get really busy at times, but I've never seen more than 2 people waiting in line in any of the registers. They have different ethnic foods as well as some healthy choices. Make sure to stop by the bakery and pick up a piece of strawberry chocolate cake and than head over to the deli, grab a number, and wait line.
Just a couple tips:
The parking lot can get crammed so just park as far away it will save you the madness of trying to get out.
Bring a quarter since they do the same thing as Aldi's with their carts. -

This is our local neighborhood grocery store--typical, not so much, but a great place to shop. The ethnic food sections are large, the prices are probably better than most chain grocery stores and they have a great deli, the meat and produce are both fantastic. Highly recommend it as a place to shop if you are in the neighborhood--but, at the same time, I probably wouldn't recommend driving too far just to go here either.

Great place to shop.
Produce - Great selection, deep quantity, more than one variety per species. Oranges - half a dozen different types. Lots of options and all completely fresh. Nothing rotting in the bins, just bright, fresh, well maintained stock.
Meat and Fish - hundreds of varieties from tip to tail, tenderloin to offal, it is all here. Really fresh. Already marinated meats for ease of preparation to fresh, bright eyed fish. Mexican shrimp cocktail is a bargain but does need the addition of a little heat/spice when you get it home. But at less than $5.00 for a one pound container, I don't mind. Across from the meat section is a small hot food area. Whole rotisserie chickens, some days hand made tamales others chilaquilles. Fabulous looking baby back ribs already to eat, rib tips, and a load of other rotating entrees.
Deli - Meats from Bobak's, Andy's, Dietz and Watson as well as every major brand and flavor of deli meat. Home made chicken salad that is the best I've ever had. Cheese, salads, side dishes, etc. All first rate.
Bakery - Breads, cookies, rolls and from fine earthy, grainy and artisanal to w loaves to more conventional breads. cookies, danish, Russian, Mexican, Italian, Greek, Jewish rye and onion rolls.
Grocery - Fabulous selection of ethnic and imported goods. Aisles filled with Polish, Italian, Mexican, Greek, Eastern European, Asian and everything in between. Olive oils and vinegars from the world over. Jams and preserves from France and the rest of Europe.
Pre packaged nuts, dried fruit, domestic and imported candies.
Staff - incredibly nice, well versed in the products sold and helpful as well.
Very clean, well organized and a fun place to shop.
I am really looking forward to my move to the neighborhood so that I can do all of my shopping here. -

I heard about A&G from a former coworker who was Polish. To me, that's the best kind of recommendation. If I'm looking for, say, a Polish restaurant or grocery or whatever ... I'm going to ask a Polish person where to go.
Now, I should mention that this place isn't strictly Polish. It's very Euro-centric, though, because it's in a largely Polish-populated neighborhood. However, they also have a great selection of Hispanic, Italian and Asian foods.
Particularly stellar grocery finds: A large jar of Tahini for $4.99 (normally, Tahini costs $7-$8 dollars). Goya brand Chimmichurri for $3.99 (not as good as homemade, but cheap enough to make it worth trying). Canned lychees for $0.89 a can (I can't even get them that cheap at Asian markets). And Honeycrisp apples for about $1.00/pound. Nowhere else have I found Honeycrisps for that cheap!
The only thing I got from A&G that I didn't care for was their teriyaki chicken wings from the deli. But hey, they were kind of an impulse buy ...
The store is very clean and well-organized. Their produce section is fresh and gorgeous ... and cheap! Killer bakery, and a display of European chocolates that make me wanna say "F*ck it!" and get really, really fat.
A&G is a little off the beaten path for me, so I can't make it my "regular" grocery store. But it's definitely a foodie's paradise, and a place I'll be returning.Listed in: Local Markets. Better Karma.

This is THE place to shop for your groceries. I love how clean the place is, the freshness of everything they sell and the music played in the store. It's Europey' Italian and other centric. -

I found this place searching for a produce place, when I moved north from the south-side of Chicago. It is less expensive than Jewels and other produce places. it has a large selection of produce, specialty items and meats. Its where I go when I need lots of fresh produce for a veggie or fruit trays. I've even tried some of the specialty (Euro-centric, Hispanic, and Asian) items ....be careful its easy to go over board.
FYI...parking lots in the back of the store
I did take off 1 star, am big on customer service and when I had questions there was no one available -

Best all-around, one-stop shop grocery store I've found- super fresh produce, decent bakery items, good deli, and the prices are hard to beat.
Misses getting 5 starts for two reasons- some of the stuff on the shelves is way past its due date- look closely. Worse, you pick out a bunch of fresh produce, only to get to the checkout line and have that sourfaced chick who's checking you out throw it all in the bag and bruise it up. No kidding, they'll literally toss those potatoes right on top of the tomatoes. Hmmm, looks like this can of soup will fit right on top! As a result, I aim for the lines with Polish looking girls if I can find 'em 'cause they tend to treat my food with a little more care- all the others workers here are brutal.
This place is the same as Valli Produce out in Schaumburg if anybody knows that place- same owners, but this location is bigger/nicer. -

A&G is the best grocery store in the city. Maybe the universe. I am going to explain why. This is what I wrote upon discovering A&G back in March:
Upon walking in, it was clear that this was no Jewel-Osco. The aisles were wide, people were smiling, everything was brightly lit and freshly painted. They were playing some crazy Eastern European music over the loudspeaker. Also, it smelled like baked bread and cheese, rather than an unsettling combination of Lysol and rotting vegetables.
But you know, that's all aesthetic.
As we wandered through the enormous produce section, we were confronted by any number of items we'd never even heard of. Multiple varieties of eggplants, onions, cactus leaves, plantains, peppers, apples, pears, persimmons...you name it, they had ten million kinds of it. And CHEAP. Green bell peppers, for example, which are $2 each at Jewel, were $1.49 per POUND.
Then we went to the deli, where we noticed that the prices were slightly higher than Jewel's-for example, our favorite sandwich cheese, Hoffmann's Super Sharp, was $4.50 to Jewel's $4.49...OH WAIT.
A&G's prices by the POUND. Jewel prices by the HALF-pound. Additionally, I got a delicious olive thing for like $1.50, and we got some apple-smoked gruyere cheese for $3, and they had fresh, NOT packaged feta-your choice of Bulgarian, Greek, or American. WHAT UNIVERSE IS THIS.
OH RIGHT also there is a bakery where they have six aisles of bread from a whole bunch of different bakeries and really cheap fresh tortillas and fresh Polish donuts and regular donuts and amazing-looking cakes and cookies and things.
There is an entire aisle of imported candy. (Norwegian marzipan? Polish pistachio truffles? They got 'em.) There is an entire aisle of cheap dried fruit and nuts of pretty much every variety. They actually sell the mythical Red Lentils, plus also yellow ones and green ones and brown ones. And dried beans. And every kind of rice. And every kind of Mexican and Polish soda. They have separate sections for domestic and imported cookies, which is awesome.
Oh, and: the employees are friendly! They smile and chat with you like normal people; they know the answers when you ask questions and when they don't they find out what the answer is; when they ring up your Savoy cabbage as red cabbage, they don't change the price even though it should have been $.20 more.
In all seriousness, coming from a grocery store wasteland, A&G's was the most amazing thing ever. It almost brought tears to my eyes. We were giddy with excitement. We had eight items on our shopping list and spent more than 90 minutes in this store, basking in its endless wonder. Also we spent $60, which is the most we have ever spent on one grocery trip. (Of course, the amount of food we got for that $60 was about $100 worth of food at Jewel prices, so we felt pretty good about it.)
Also they have a parking lot. -

I love, love, love this grocery store! The produce department is bigger than some entire markets, and the variety is only beat by the low prices. The deli is huge, fresh and cheap. I love the international aisles - they're like little food museums to me.
The bakery carries Polish rye from what seems like dozens of different local bakeries, oh and don't forget the kolachky!
I even like the music that is piped in - you get everything from Polish pop to American oldies to Frank Sinatra. And the customers are as diverse as the groceries. Polish, Mexican, various Asian countries, etc... all represented.
Now, the store can be an absolute madhouse. And I don't buy things like paper towels & dish soap here (that's what Target & Costco are for!). Do not get me started on the hell that is the parking lot.
Even with all that, it is still one of my favorite grocery stores. -

Before I moved out of Lakeview, I thought the world ended after Western Avenue. Before I moved out of Logan Square, I thought the world ended at Pulaski. Now that I live in Avondale/Hermosa (WEST of Pulaski), I think I've seen everything.
The A&G is pretty awesome. Clearly reflecting the changing character of the Polish/Hispanic Northwest side, there is a good mix of people and goods here. A great selection of stuff, lots of good prices, good brands and generic ones, all around a great shopping experience. I love the deli counter.
I'm probably going to be making this one of my main grocery choices since the Belmont/Kimball Dominick's is closing. -

I miss Goldblatts / Ames / any Target type store that occupied the building before A & G invaded this location.
Their bread selection is dangerous. It gives you the sudden urge to toss loaves on the floor and plop yourself on them to truly enjoy their pillowy goodness.
The place isn't cheap. The meat is actually quite expensive compared to Fresh Market on Central but I wouldn't buy meat from them anymore anyway. My dad used to be a butcher when he was a wee lad and he was not pleased with the cut.
They have an awesome selection of dried fruit and euro candy. I try to avoid the area sometimes for fear of getting lost in the sugary perfection.
It's a step up from their older smaller location they had just a block away a few years back but nothing spectacular. -

Needed provisions for our Memorial Day BBQ after a visit to Amaliya's house so she suggested A&G.
UNBELIEVABLE!
It's hidden gems like these that make living on the West side remotely tolerable. The produce section is SO BIG that it takes up the entire center portion of store, everything else is situated on the edges. The selection and quality of the produce is fantastic and (I could barely believe this) CHEAPER than Tony's! Some of the stuff was even Stanley's cheap. Their "bulk" foods are pre-packaged but the selection is great and most of it is relatively inexpensive.
The rest of the store contains your better-than-average grocery selection with an bent towards Eastern European, and Italian products. The prices are generally much cheaper than Dominick's or Jewel. The bakery and deli appear to be of good quality (I didn't buy anything from either of them).
This grocery store is near perfect. If they offered more organic options and liquor it WOULD be perfect. -
Review from Weisun C.
If you live within 5 miles of this place, you've probably already heard of them through their weekly 4-page sales circular that comes by way of the Trib's Local Values in your mailbox. It's a huge supermarket in what used to be the old Goldblatt's store, that caters to local Polish, Mexican, and Asian shoppers who frequent its aisles. The prices are very competitive, with lots of "loss-leader" bargains on a daily basis, especially if you shop often for your fresh fruits and crisp vegetables to cook at home. Their competition in this area are Tony's Finer Foods and Cermak, both major supermarkets in their own right. A free parking lot adds to the convenience (since the mayor's meters went up on Belmont).
What stands out about A&G are their specialty aisles. They have a wide selection of imported packaged Polish foods. They also have all the sweets and candies that your European friends and family might bring to you from overseas. The prices are very good too. A&G also has an aisle devoted to Asian vegetables for any stir-fry recipe and some specialties in their freezer cases (like pre-made dumplings and won-ton sheets). There is also a full-service meat and deli counter that is the full width of the store. And they maintain a bakery in one corner that specializes in Polish and Italian favorites.
You won't be shopping with the usual muzak either. It's always songs by Sinatra, Tony Martin, Tony Bennett, or others of that repertoire. -

A & G = little $ + awesome produce + varieties of meat and cheeses + huge isle of nuts, candies and all sorts of dried fruit.
Agreed on other reviews, this place is clean and the staff is corteous.
When I have the time, I come here to get my produce, meats, cheeses and anything from the nut/candy isle. Jewel and others may have the market on processed foods, but A & G gets gold for fresh food. Realistically, it is not in the same bracket as Whole Foods, but who wants to spend $5/lb for a head of lettuce wrapped with the finest plastic when I can get the same head minus the fancy wrapping for .99/lb at A & G.
WARNING: DO NOT go on a weekend if you can. It is super busy. Oddly enough, the check-out lines seems to move fast. -

EDIT: As of Mar 2008, I've noticed that the produce was not as great as usual a few times. Sometimes the cucumbers are too soft and the bananas aren't so plump. Oh, the sun dried tomatoes were not that dry. Blah... their dried figs were yummy, though.
But the prices are still great. Just make sure to be picky when you get your fruits and veggies. The other stuff, such as their breads and other canned or bottled items, is good.
The cashiers SUCK! It doesn't matter what time or day I'm there, they always have to price check something. Almost as bad as Big Lots.
So, the caveat here is that you have to be patient... but overall, you can get some of the cheapest foods around. I will have to check the Tony's Finer Foods on Central to see if I would rather shop there from now on. Keep you posted.
----
EDIT: As of Jan 2008, I still love this place. However, I would suggest not going on a Sunday. I found that the produce wasn't as fresh as before. I believe they get their new stuff on Tuesdays or so. Your best bet is probably the middle of the week??? :)
---
I can't wait to go here again! I'd rather hang out here than go out to the bar or the club... It's just amazing!
Huge and clean and multitalented... Cheap prices. The produce is fresh. Man, I wanna work here!
Props to my mom who told me bout this place! I wouldn't put another grocery store above this one (Jewel, Tony's, etc).
There's a huge lot behind the place. Park there!
Oh, a minor thing, but the bags are kinda wimpy. -

This place is fantastic. Based on my neighbor's recommendation and a few reviews here, I tried it out for the first time today. I love it!
No more shopping at Target for crappy groceries or dealing with Jewell's disgusting, overpriced stores. A&G is the bomb. Fantastic produce, excellent deli, amazing ethnic sections, and a fabulous bakery.
They have Dietz & Watson deli meats, yummy cheese, homemade salads & dips, a meat counter, and an entire candy section. What else could you possibly need?
There are amazing deals too- watch for the ads or go to their very nice website to view the ads online.
If they started to carry my diet sunkist lemonade I would be a fan for life, so unfortunately I will still have to stop at Strack & Van Til to stock up on the lemonade but that's it, I'm sold on A&G. -
Review from Peter M.
My favorite produce mart/grocery store in Chicago. The produce prices are great but not quite as low as Jerry's but the selection is MUCH greater! I've never seen some of the items that they have here. There are usually multiple varieties of many produce items (regular, baby, persian and chinese eggplant, as an example). If you're looking for specialty produce this is the place.
They also have good prices on meat and deli. The deli's regular prices are lower than the chain stores sale prices with a much bigger selection. I recommend the pork kabanosy (a thin smoked polish sausage) and the starapolska ham.
They also have a large selection of polish and mexican foods and a bakery counter.
It's definitely worth checking out! -

Wow I couldn't believe the prices and the selection here. They have all varieties of food; Italian, Polish, Mexican, Asian. The deli and bakery are awesome, the meat selection is very good. The produce is fresh and CHEAP! They also make fresh salsa which makes it all the better !! :- )

YAY! Found my new favorite market. What a great selection of produce and groceries. A variety of imports as well. We were stocking up on food for this big blizzard and stocked up on a variety of goodies for this one. I was very happy with the total for all my groceries. I wasnt too happy with the parking meter situation but it was alright.

I go here often because it is close to my home. It has a wide selection of fruits and vegetables and a nice bakery. You do have to be careful about bread and bakery. They seem to sell their day old bread and pastries on the following day. I always check the bread to make sure it is soft. Also the fruit and vegetables seemed to be refrigerated at night and this ruins the taste of some items such as plaintains when they are refrigerated and then put back out. I also don't like the quarter in the shopping cart.

A & G Fresh Market is 'As Good As It Gets!' in the language of Yelp.
From the exquisite pastries, to dirt-cheap produce, to the vast selection of Mexican and Polish specialty foods, A & G has it all. And it has it for CHEAP!
You want limes? 10 for $1.00. You want potatoes? $1.99 for 10lbs. You will literally spend half what you would at Jewel or Dominic's, and everything feels more fresh.
Check out my photos. -

I refuse to shop anywhere else... this place is heaven!
I've never seen a store so clean. It doesn't smell like disinfectant either... it is just CLEAN. We even saw employees wiping down the shelves before putting canned goods on them.
They specialize in Mexican and Polish food. I've been to alot of ethnic grocery stores in my life but there's stuff here that I have NO IDEA what it is! So if you are looking for authentic you will find it here.
Their deli is amazing and their meat is outstanding. Meat prices are average, maybe a little high, but the quality is worth it.
The only problem I have is this place is super crowded all the time. I usually go at like 7-8am on Sunday morning when it's empty and I can take my time perusing the aisles. I always find something new every time I go there. -

I live in the suburbs and was attracted to A&G from a flier we recieved. It was okay but not any better than Super Low Foods, and Tony's Finer Market.
The produce was nice and more reasonable than Jewel, but then again they are ripping people off hand over fist. However, they did not have the deals I am accustomed to. To make the drive into this area to deal with traffic and the extra bodies wandering the isles I would rather stay closer to my home. IF you are in Chicago looking for great deals visit Andy's Fruit Ranch in Albany Park, and of course everyone is familiar with Stanleys. -

Um, this place RULES:
- huge variety of fresh produce, way better than what you'd find at Jewel, Dominicks, etc
- very cheap deli meat/cheese -- you're probably getting ripped off anywhere else
- rows upon rows of freshly baked breads, cakes and cookies from local bakeries (mmm, focaccia...)
- their selection of imported chocolates/candy is ridiculous
- a whole freakin' wall, floor to ceiling, of Polish juices -- they probably have every flavor combination possible
- an entire section of the store devoted to Mexican food staples (not to mention some sweet fucking Santa Muerte candles!)
- They just started carrying Bolthouse Farms juices!!! $3.99 for a 32 oz bottle... Pretty sure that's $1-2 cheaper than what I was paying at Jewel.
There is only one downside: they have a very meager selection of frozen foods. Seeing as they're a *fresh* market, however, this shouldn't surprise you. I personally don't mind at all; with food like this at your disposal, why would you WANT to eat frostbitten, preservative-ladden microwavable dinners?
Oh yeah, they always are playing something quirky and adorable on the speakers, too, hahah. -

This place has great variety for all kinds of appetites. One whole side of the store is a butcher shop and bakery. The vegetables are always fresh and well kept. There is a HUGE assortment of candies, perogies, honey, pop (they sell green river).... etc. If it's on the shelf, then there is about 5 different forms/brands to choose from. Yeah, like, one huge assortment of, like, everything. Frank Sinatra is always blaring and old Polish ladies dance to it in the aisles. I saw it two different times I went. It was wick-ed.

I give A & G 4 stars because of their prices, produce selection, and imports. I love grocery shopping at A & G because I can fill an entire grocery cart and end up spending half of what I would spend at a larger chain supermarket. I think that this is because they are very limited in their selections of prepared foods and brand names. You end up spending way less on processed foods/ junk food. They feature huge aisles geared towards Mexican, Asian, Polish, Italian, and Kosher cooking. They also have a humongous selection of produce, including exotics such as cactus, taro root, and assorted mushrooms. If you're short on time and also on a super tight budget, you can buy huge packages of ripe zucchini, tomatoes, etc for 99 cents! Awesome for soups and stews. They also have an incredible bakery and deli section. Their selection and pricing of lunch meats, cheeses and sausages can't be beat! It's usually about half the price of other grocery stores. I am a sucker for Black Diamond Aged Cheddar and their home made oven roasted turkey and roast beef.
The only downfall of A & G is their meat and seafood department and lack of a liquor department. I highly recommend avoiding their seafood section if possible. I made the mistake of buying their frozen seafood special that came in a netted bag. For $10, you received clams, mussels, shrimp, and 2 lobster tails. It was a hideous experience. The fact that it was $10 should have warned me. The fact that my car and all of the groceries that I bought smelled like a dirty fish tank when I got home should have warned me. Even after reading the directions and knowing full well that you can not boil frozen lobster tails, clams, and shrimp at the same time without overcooking them didn't serve a s a warning. I was so stupid. Everything tasted like a dirty fish tank, and the textures were so wrong! They also sell many varieties of generic frozen seafood skillet meals that are really fishy. -

When I walked into this store, it was like walking into a time machine. First thing I noticed was the music playing like entering a supermarket in the 1950's. Next, how cool and clean it was, how the fruit and vegetable stands were nicely stocked. I bought some cheeses and cold meats there. It leans toward European style of foods like Italian, Polish, etc. I love this place! It's my little vacation getaway where I make believe I'm in Paris again. The prices are a little pricey, but it's fresh. I highly recommend this place.

A&G is one of the best supermarkets on the north side of Chicago. They have an amazingly FRESH selection of fruit and veggies. They carry some veggies your local Jewel and Dominicks don't carry (i.e. rutabega and other root veggies.) The bakery is amazing and has fresh bread, rolls, and sweet rolls. You can pick exactly what you want and if you want to make them a gift they will wrap it up for you. The deli guys are helpful, ( I needed a ham hock for a BBQ brisket I was making) and will make stuff to order. Great prices, helpful staff, and because its so close to my home makes it 5 stars.

My go-to place for produce. Oh, and their carnitas, when available, are really good as well. You will pay a premium on the basics and necessities, but they have to make their margins somewhere. :)

Their deli sandwiches are out of this world and could be the best deal in the city. The large turkey sandwich is about 2 feet long and twice the width of subway and the sell it for $6. My co-workers and I love this place. We have probably been there over 30 times in the past year.

First off, this place is huge. It occupies what used to be Wiebolts dept. store. That will give you an idea of the size of this place. The deals are amazing here. They know that in this neighborhood they better have great sales. There is alot of competition for them. It seems like that doesn't matter to much however. All the produce stores in this area seem to be doing well.
