Ummmm, how did I manage to live my life without ever checking out A&A? For $4.00 they'll make you a delicious and filling lunch. If there's another place in Brooklyn where you can have a delicious lunch for under $5, do let me know...

Doubles! The channa with pepper sauce is off the hook. The chickpeas are tender and flavorful, the fried bread doesn't taste heavy. I also tried various bakes over my week of working in the area. The herring bake was awesome! The channa and cauliflower bake was awesome! The spinach and pumpkin bake was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

I never tried any other doubles spots, but it's hard to imagine they could be more delicious.

*Tiny spot and they close at 3pm.

I don't know about you, but I love my stomach. He's put up with my nonsense for my entire life (the drinking, the disapproving looks when he puts on a few pounds, etc.).

To show him that this isn't a one-sided relationship, I feed him doubles. At A&A, they only cost me $1.25 each, and they are easily double the deliciousness of pretty much every other snack in that price range. Doubly delicious, if you will.

If you ever find yourself on the A (or C) train, do your stomach a solid and stop off at Nostrand for a doubles. With tamarind sauce. It'll make everyone involved happier.

Cheapest good breakfast you can find.  Scotch Bonnet peppers are the perfect way to wake up before hitting the A-train.  They have no place inside to sit but provide a small bench outside.  Messy but very good.  If you can eat $5.00 here, you are a pig.

Doubles is an everyday meal/snack in my home country of Trinidad & Tobago time and after a search around Brooklyn for some good doubles, I've got to say A&A nails it on the head. The channa (also known as chickpeas) is delicious with the tamarind sauce. Depending on the day, the bara (the fried dough that encases the channa) is fluffy and light or heavy and stomach filling. It's as good as (if not better than) the doubles made in Trinidad and Tobago.

Their pholourie (which is a fried round chickpea dough) is also delicious and is well complimented with their sweet tamarind sauce.

The establishment is small with standing space only. They have typical Trini offerings of aloo (potato) pie, bake (this is most akin to a fried bread), smoke herring, saltfish, pumpkin, etc. I have yet to try these options (being a doubles and pholourie fiend myself) but my sibling has indicated that they are also tasty.

PERIOD. You must try this spot!

*Note: This is not a sit down restaurant. The space is so small you might miss it. This is strictly takeout and it is THE BEST.

So after coming here at least twice a week for the past year, I finally figured out the secret ingredient that makes A&A so special. I saw the grandma throwing some mangos in the blender to create this green/yellowish concotion which I believe to be a Mango Chutney. It really adds another dimension to the doubles compared to other Trini establishments.

Also, if salt fish and smoked herring are too fishy/salty for you, please do try the salmon.

So tasty!!!!!!   The bakes are nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I tried the bake and saltfish...(though the saltfish was a bit salty) it was still good. The addition of the sliced onions had a nice crunch to it. I also had chick peas and that good ole' Trini pepper sauce!  lip smacking good.  Couldn't leave out without having a piece of fried shark. Soooooo moist and well seasoned!!  They have alot of varieties to choose from .......can't wait to stop in again!!

Here is the 4 star that you are looking for and it been awhile since I ever give a 4 or a 5 star to any places. This is our 2nd stop on the tour and it was a hole in the wall place and they sell DEEP FRY dough sandwiches with certain filling they have and I got myself a spicy herring which was AWESOME!!! The taste was bold and in your FACE. It only cost $2.5 and i must say it is one of my favorite place so far in NYC. I can see myself making this later in the future for my restaurant and changing the look of it so i can charger $20 to while folks lol
I also try the peas sandwich which taste really good and i wanted to buy more to go but i decided not to that was a hugh mistakes. Anyone who come to nyc to visit me then i would take them here. FYI-it isn;t the safest neighborhood around so go during the day time or take someone who know the local hehe

What makes this 5 star:  I know a little about doubles... I had it for breakfast almost every Sat and Sun while growing up.  I have travelled the length and breadth of my home country seeking the best doubles.  When I moved away, I thought I would never have good doubles again.  Then 10 years later, I found A&A.  At first I thought my lack of good doubles over the years had dulled my taste buds, but after many comparisons, trips back to Trinidad, and extensive research, I realized I had stumbled upon the real deal.  Better than most places in Trinidad, and as good as the best of them.

This places makes NYC home for me, and while I don't go every Sat and Sun, if I go too long without it I get serious cravings.  Sample the rest of the menu too, you won't be disappointed!

I have to thank all the Yelpers for this one. I just moved here from LA and I've never heard of doubles before. Bakes too for that matter. So after a night of partying and in major need of food, I looked up what was close by to me. And this place has amazing reviews!

There were two other people before me and I was kinda nervous ordering since I had no idea what a double or a bake was. There aren't any descriptions on the menu.. Or if there were, I was too anxious to look haha.

When it was my turn, I seriously said, "I've never had this before." The girl making the doubles said, "You want a double?" I said, "Yes."

So she pulled out this bread-wrap looking thing and started piling on some stuff. To be honest, I'm not sure what any of it was and frankly, it doesn't matter because I LOVED IT!!!! Totally satisfied my cravings and for just $1.25, I'm coming back.

Here's to new foods! And what a great food a double is!

    Mmmm... doubles.

I had my first double here. Amazing. I got it with tamarind sauce and that little bit of sweetness made the double even better. Love A&A. Whenever I'm in BedStuy (and have cash - rare), I always grab a double or two. They are a must try.

This place is literally a hole in the wall. I went there early one September Friday afternoon, and all they had for sale was, you guessed it- DOUBLES. I mean that is why I went there so I'm not complaining, but a pastry, or maybe a bussupshut with some curried meat or vegetables would have been well received. Although the double was good, it wasn't the best I've had, and to add insult to injury, none of them were fresh, they were all premade, wrapped and served luke warm out of a large aluminum cooking pan. I was expecting more.

It says "The Doubles King" in a few places on this storefront, and they receive absolutely zero arguments from me in using such a royal moniker.

From Bedford-Stuyvesent through Crown Heights and down to Prospect Lefferts Gardens it is not hard to find yourself a good bake or doubles, but the best places are most easily detected by their lines out the door. On a weekend late morning you might be enjoying a queue of 20-30 minutes with other hungry souls, but at anytime of day these doubles ($1.25 each) are worth the wait.

Really it should not be photographed because without tasting you might be turned off by the look. But these flatbread delicacies are delicious, a flavorful curry combined with sharp tamarind sauce and spice. Three is most certainly enough for a filling lunch, making this an economic dream. A printed sign describes their urgent and apologetic need to raise the price a full quarter higher from the old $1.

They also have all the rest of the stuff you normally find in a Trini bakery, aloo pies, bus-up-shuts, and of course bakes, which are actually sandwiches with various choices of ingredients. You cannot go wrong with a bake n' shark.

The service here is quick and frank, but don't be put off by this, they just need to keep the line moving. And don't forget that "doubles" is singular and plural, so even if you just get one, it is still a doubles!

Even though A&A is pretty close to my home I don't come down to Fulton very much, but while visiting a job-related instillation this weekend I decided to make a little culinary adventure out of it. I walked into A&A pretty uninformed, other than having read that the food is royally delicious and that it is suppose to be vegetarian friendly, I really didn't know what to expect... and so made every newbie mistake. The second I walked through the door (no line) the girl behind the bizarrely tall plexiglass counter asked me what I wanted, but I stood there dumbfounded by the see-through menu for about 30 seconds while the girl asked me two more times.  Panicked banter begins:

Me" "Ummm... can I have a vegetarian bake"
    Girl 1: "What?!"
Me: "A bake with something that is vegetarian"
Girl 1: "Wha... oh" and she starts spooning something on to the bread as the other girl runs over and says
Girl 2: "siuufhj ksbvocafe ovbujo fva"
    Me: "What?"
Girl 2: "Is siuufhj ksbvocafe ovbujo fva ok"
    Me: (panicked) "Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm"
    Girl 2: "S m o k e d  H e r r i n g OK!?
    Me: "Oh... No, something vegetarian..."
    Girl2: "Pumpkin ok?"
    Me: "Yes please!"

Nonetheless the bake was really delicious, the pumpkin was smooth sweet and the "spicy" whatever they added was savory and hot, but not too hot. The "bake" is delightfully toothsome and slightly sweet, but has a vague fried fish flavor that was a turn off. Reading yelp now, I should have gotten a double, but I will be back soon, ignore those girls and finally read that menu.

A & A Bake and Doubles is a little tiny Trinidadian bake shop in Bedford Stuyvesant. Their doubles, named the "Best Vegetarian Snack" in the Village Voice Best of New York 2003, are smaller than some, but packed with flavor and only $1. These doubles (curried chickpeas between 2 small naan-like breads) are spicier than most.

(A & A opens early and closes early. There is consistently a line when I walk by around 9:00 each morning, and it is always closed when I pass again around 6:00 in the evening. They are closed on Sundays.)

This tiny place serves excellent Trinidadian food on the go. Their doubles and pholourie are great: fresh, rich, and spicy. I recommend to get doubles with pepper and pholourie with tamarind sauce. Beware: their pholourie are spicy (a lot hotter than Ali's on Fulton, for comparison). I also tried the bake with salt fish, which I like very much.
The staff are not exactly friendly, and if you are not familiar with the food and want to ask tend to get impatient. Try asking some of the other people in line instead: I always got great suggestions. Like the delicious dasheen cake I got last time.

    PS; they accept T&T dollars.

it's taken me a couple of tries (and months) before i started wanting doubles for brunch on my own because well.. to be honest, the doubles do not look appetizing. it's a mashup of chickpeas and spices in brown sauce in a soft pitaesque bread. BUT, it smells and tastes AMAZING. (i wish i could bold that)

cash only, closed sundays! I wish it was open on sunday - perfect snack.

    Dear A&A,

Your doubles are so yummy and delicious that I spend hours dreaming and salivating about when my next bite will come.  Your filing is perfect.  Your bara excellent.  While I love your spicy hotness, I especially love your tantalizingly sweet tamarind sauce.

Please don't change -- except maybe your hours which I wish were a little more regular.

Being that iza 1/2 a Trini and that I live like four blocks down on Jefferson, I frequent this place pretty often.

I'm a simple kinda girl so I always get bake & saltfish with slight pepper.

Mi fada (Trini accent come out hehe) always gets TREE (hehe-its never 3 when Trinis say it) doubles w/ tamarind sauce or bake & smoked herring. A bottle of Apple J...and we are "GOOD TO GO!!", like Elephant Man.

If yous a reall Trini and ya don't have time to cook in the mornings or w/e...here is the place to be!!....Just wake up a bit earlier than usual  and prepare to stand on the longgg lines, cuz trust me it gets long!!

P.S. They recently put a cute little red wooden table and stool set outside of the rest. for like 2 people to sit and eat. They get a half a star for that!! Sooo cute!! =]

I finally was able to try this place; it seems like it's always closed when I walk by in the evening or on weekends.  Strictly a weekday lunch place, I guess.

Now I am a relative doubles and bake newbie, so my only basis for comparison is the food at TriniGul down the street.  I ordered an eggplant and saltfish bake and some doubles.  The doubles were spicier and sweeter than the ones at TriniGul with less of a savory 'curry' flavor.  The bake was extremely cheap and filling; I highly recommend the bakes here  for those looking to fill up on flavorful food on a budget.  The bake itself was made of thicker, breadier bread than the TriniGul bake and I was able to choose from spinach, eggplant, saltfish and a few other offerings.

Pros: CHEAP, excellent choice of fillings, very tasty
Cons: rarely open, nowhere to sit, not much to look at

Showed up after closing time just wanting to try out their best. The owner offered me one of their top sellers on the house, I assume because I looked like I had made a special trip just to get there.

Even slightly cold at the end of the day, these things are special. If you're in the area, it's worth a try - if you love flavor and spices.

I am extremely ashamed to report that I passed A&A for the last three (3!!) years before going inside. A Trinidadian friend came to my apt one morning with a bake & I was mesmerized. The neatness, flavorful smell &  his facial expression while "killin' it" .. made me try it the next day.

This instantly became a favorite once I tried  the Bake (fried pastry) with Spinach, Eggplant, Tomato & Pepper. YUMMM! Next time, I'm adding pumpkin to the mix.  Economical friendly - $3.50

I came in not knowing what bakes or doubles were so I simply asked. The staff was helpful despite my nervous ignorance and I ended up going with the the bake (filled with chickpeas) instead of a double since I wasn't brave enough to try the herring. I got my bake spicy and it was absolutely delicious! So flavorful, a bit messy, and ridiculously cheap. Next time I am down here I will try a double.

I go to a job fairly close to A&A, so I can hop off the bus and get a few doubles for breakfast.  Nothing about this food would really tip you off that it is great until you actually taste it, at which point it becomes clear that it is the best  "street" food there is and entirely accessible.  It's just not traditional American breakfast food, but don't let that get in the way of experiencing delicious Doubles, they're fantastic!

If I wasn't far from them I'd eat it everyday lol... the last time I had their bake with salt fish it was way too salty and rubbery. I've had quite a few doubles in my day, and these are likely the best I've had.  The question is: how good can a double be?  Is the perfect double 5 stars?  How would that compare to 5 stars at a fancy French restaurant?  Should the fact that A & A is cheap increase its rating?  I don't know!  At any rate, a very solid place.
