Review from Michael G.

I write this review as I sip from my newly purchased Breckenridge Christmas Ale that I bought for $5 bucks/six pack @ A-1. Yes, folks, it may not be Christmas anymore, but apparently Santa was still feeling generous and decided to bestow upon me the great, discounted libations that exist @ A-1 Liquor Store. You ask: "how is it possible that a beer that usually retails for upwards of $9 dollars/six pack only sells for $5 bucks @ A-1?" I say, that's just the magic of Santa. And I'm not playing in any reindeer games here (never much of a fan of Ben Affleck).
But that is not all, my good Yelpers. I did, indeed, purchase yet another six pack for the low cost of around $5 bucks. And that six pack's name is 'Humming Ale' by Anchor Brewing Company. How much does it usually retail for you ask? Around $10 bucks/six pack. My name may not be Blaise Pascal, but I know when math is in my favor...and I just paid like half price for these beers that would've cost me around $20 bucks had I bought them anywhere else in Indy.
The store itself is comfy and well laid out, and prices for single/six pack/case are easily readable. I'm just a beer guy, but these kind of discounts extend to their wine/hard liquor sections as well.
What kills me is that I've been overpaying for beer at Marsh and the like for years (don't buy beer from Marsh, peeps), and even though I live only a few blocks from A-1, I just never made the first move. Well, today I made the first move and I'm rounding 3rd as we speak right now. The Christmas Ale is whispering sweet nothings into my ear as I type this and I'm fiddin' to reach under the covers for some of that sweet Christmas pudding that I like to scoop out every year.....what?!?!?!?
Anyways, you get the point. You want to be jolly? You want a never-ending Christmas savings beer drinking extravaganza every day of the week? Then stop overpaying for your liquor where you shop now, and step on in to A-1 liquors and I guarantee you you'll be happy with the selection and the customer service.
p.s. I believe the proprietor of said establishment approached me on my visit--didn't catch his name--and he was as friendly as could be. Told me about their e-mail list for new products, etc. Could not have been more helpful and engaging.
p.p.s They do NOT accept credit cards? Why? Because it costs money to have a company to process (2-3%). So, rather than accept CC, they pass the savings onto the consumer. Pretty mackadocious, right?
5 stars, yo.....go getcha drink on. -

Wow, who knew this little gem was hidden in SoBro? I sure didn't. Upon pulling up, the place seemed a little ghetto... a little uh, east side, if you will, but you know why? Because it's freaking cheap! The alcohol in here was pretty inexpensive, but wait.
I'm not just talking about some cheap tallboys of bud.
No, there was a wide selection of micro brews at really decent prices. I went in here to pick up some sort of mix pack of some decent beer for Christmas gift boxes I was putting together.
One guy, guessing it was the owner- super friendly- was really helpful and offered to take my 12 pack of beer to the front counter while I continued to shop. I just wanted to hold it while I made my final decision. I'm sure he thought I'd drop it with my one handed grip, but I had to convince him that I was stronger than I look. -

My new favorite liquor store (although Alabama Liquors retains a space in my heart). A really nice and huge selection, terrific prices and a friendly staff. The clientele is diverse in all the right ways. Oh -- they do only accept cash.

A-1 Liquors is by far the best liquor store I've found in Indianapolis. The selection is solid: not huge, but you can probably find everything you need and some beers you never knew existed. I found these reasonably priced Ethiopian beers there. They were pretty impressive actually.
The main draw of A-1 liquors though is the price. Indianapolis has insanely overpriced liquor stores. From the warm beer at supermarkets to the massive Kahn's which hasn't passed any of its saving from buying in bulk onto consumers to the seedy Bottle Shoppe south of broad ripple, liquor in Indianapolis is insanely overpriced. Not so at A-1 liquors.
For instance, a 24 case of high life in bottles will only run you 13.99. That's awesome. At the Bottle Shoppe, you'll pay like, 8 bucks for a 6 pack. God I hate the Bottle Shoppe. Anyway, that's what alcohol should cost. Hard liquor is similarly inexpensive.
Also, the owners are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Just a great liquor store. Thank you for everything, A-1 liquors.
Oh, and they take cash only, so like, hit up the Chase on Keystone and 52nd before you come here. Or if you're some weirdo who doesn't bank with Chase, they have another atm at the store.
Happy drinking Yelpers -

Do you like to shop at Marshall's or TJ Maxx? Do you like hunting for hidden deals? If you do, A-1 is the place for you! The outside appears to most as a typical urban liquor store, but it's far from ordinary.
A-1 does not accept credit cards, and as a result they do not have to pay transaction fees...because of this they're able to price lower than their competitors. A great example is a fifth of Crown Royal (my normal litmus test to check pricing). Crown normally runs $22.99 to $25.99, A-1 sells Crown for $19.99.
The other secret of this little store is their huge section of discounted beers and wines. Most are off-season beers, or wines that are changing their labels or are excess inventory from other stores. A-1 acquires these deals from the big distributors like National Wine & Spirits or Ollingers, and large stores like Kahn's and 21st Amendment. -

Great selection of beer at great prices. They always have great beer specials and they have the lowest prices on liquor in town. The only drawback is that they only accept cash but they have an ATM in the store. Even if I didn't live a few blocks from A-1 it would still be worth the drive.

This used to be my closest liquor store. Sometimes you'll find some pretty good seasonal beers here on sale for super cheap. Good beer snacks too. Ladies, take a friend--it gets kind of scary at night. Cash only, but they have an ATM.
