We added A/C to the heating system that was in the 112 year old house a few years ago. We adore having central AC and would never live without it. We live near the water and the real estate agent showing the house claimed we would get a cool breeze off the water...she lied!! We lasted one summer and it was off to Home Depot to get an AC.
It's been a few years and we love being able to flip a switch and magically cool air blows into every room. My wife is always telling me, 'you need to call and get the AC serviced, it's gotta need it by now...' and I never do so of course the first warm weekend that we had last month we cranked it on, enjoyed the cool air that was coming out and then it all stopped. I had to hear it all over 'I told you.....' and 'You and my father, always procrastinating..'
So with it being soooo long since we had it installed I couldn't find any of the paperwork, looked at the AC - nothing, looked at the thermostat and I found a sticker on the inside of the cover. It had to break on a weekend and I called them, let them know of our need for service and nothing..... I got a call 4 days later from a guy that sounded like he'd been up all night drinking and smoked a few before picking up the phone.
Decided to go to the Trane web-site and they listed A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air was the only place the manufacturer recommends and they are certified "Trane Comfort Specialists". We set up a time, they were on time, knew exactly what was wrong, educated us on area's that we were unaware of, fixed the problem for little money, gave us recommendations of future service and were out in less than an hour. It was the easiest process and best service I've experienced in a long time.
I may even remember to call them for future service needs now! But don't promise anything to my wife..... -

Excellent experience. They came recommended from a dear friend.
A-1 performed a repair consultation for free when our furnace died, then proceeded to give us the best quote (out of three) for a replacement job. The workmen were prompt, polite, and even fixed some shoddy work that had been done in the past by a competitor before we bought the house.
We couldn't have made a better choice than A-1. -

Dear Bay Area,
This new homeowner interviewed and took estimates from three other HVAC specialists before finding A-1 Guaranteed through our "Bay Area Parents." New Homeowners rejoice- pricing was MORE than competitive. We went from no furnace and a dangerous situation to new Trane superfurnace in under 8 hours. These guys visited yesterday in order to perform a safety assessment, and after 8 laborious hours IN THE POURING RAIN, two strong as nails workmen completed a new heating system TODAY! The were trustworthy, efficient, and kind.
We are pleased to recommend A-1 and hope never to go into the wicked awful crawlspace under our home for a furnace-related reason again!

If I would have got the bill before they called me and I would have gave them only one star. To start with, I had an old unit and they serviced it after it was having problems, I signed up for the monthly payment plan so they would service it twice a year for a discounted price and so that when it would need to be replaced it would be discounted . All was good. A few months later it went out again (we almost expected it, they told me it might and it was my decision to repair it the first time instead of replacing it) they descovered there was a more serious problem and that it would need to be replaced, they pumped more freon into it for a temp fix until we could get the paperwork in order for a new unit. They quoted me a unit that was over $7000 (this is a one story 1000 sq ft condo, doesnt need a unit to cool a whole house). I was going to just go with it (bad move on my part), until they told me they wouldn't finance me. So I shopped around and found two others who quoted me just under $5000 (this is what the price should have been). When I called back and told them that I found someone else who could finance and it would be less than $5000, they offered me an open box unit for $5500 and still wouldnt finance me, they told me that I was paying more because the service is going to be better. So I went with the other company (the service was great). Today they called me back to get my address to charge me for the second service but they were very understanding when I told them what happened and that I didn't think I should have to pay the full price for the service since they have not kept up with thier end of the contract I've been paying $17 a month for. She dropped the bill by 50%. That tells me that even though they wanted to charge me well above an exceptable rate, they are honest and I can appriciate that. I still canciled the contract. If you are looking for a recommendation from me, I will not tell you yes or no about them, I will only tell you to read what I said and make your own decision.

I can't speak highly enough of A-1 Guaranteed. I have never met a company so committed to customer satisfaction and they stand 120% behind their work, well beyond any company I have ever worked with.
They say what they do, and then they do what they say!!! Everyone there operates with the highest integrity and utmost pride in their work and the company.
You couldn't ask for anything better and I couldn't have made a better choice then when I chose them for my new furnace -

Well, a pleasant update, but after my condo owner brought in an expert and requested another visit by A-1. I was glad to see the Manager and Sr. Technician come over and basically do the right thing and make sure I was a happy camper with the heater...they changed some internal settings that I would not have been able to do and it now runs normally...how pleasant!
I also appreciated that they did take my comments to heart (I wasn't lying to them and was not rude after all) and it could be that this was an isolated incident. The Manager even made sure i had his cell phone number in case of anything with it in the future.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This combination of promptness, friendliness and competence is rarely found in any kind of contractor. I had them come check out our furnace based on the two glowing reviews here, and they exceeded my expectations at every turn.
First, the people on the phone were friendly, and gave us a window of 8-10am the next day. The tech was here, in Albany, in the pouring rain, at 8:02. He diagnosed the duct problem and, for no additional charge, did a camera inspection of the furnace heat exchanger. Not surprisingly, the 1985 furnace was ripe for replacement. (I later saw it after it had been pulled out. They weren't kidding.)
We opted to also replace the furnace, and got one of their high-end units (which comes with about $1800 in rebates). The installers were prompt, thorough, and informed us well. We opted to go one night without a furnace to make the installation go faster. He even called to explain that the furnace would have a different name brand tag than the one specified, even though it's exactly the same unit.
The house is much more comfortable now, let me tell you. And quieter. I wouldn't hesitate to give these guys a call for your heating needs. -

Integrity and quality service. The company has installed A/C unit at the house about two years ago and does semi annual PM on A/C and heating. Always on time. Completes work as estimated. Work done right the first time and they really know their stuff. Pleasant and courteous office staff and their service techs are experienced, knowledgable, and competent. Owner cares and takes personal pride and interest in their work. I have used A1 as a repeat customer because they are honest and very capable. They don't overcharge either. I recommend A1 unequivocally because they are the best service company in their category and I have been amazed at their high level of service on every occasion. Thank you A1 from a very pleased and loyal customer.

In March my husband and I started searching HVAC Company's to find the right one for a new Heater and A/C. Too many of my friends were stuck with dead A/C units last Summer and I didn't want to end up that way with my 20 year old A/C. So we interviewed a few companies and learned more about Heaters and A/C's then we ever wanted to know. First we learned they are expensive if you want an efficient one or not. We went with efficient cause we plan on living here a long time.
We wanted a good air filter, energy efficient (energy star) and variable speed for comfort. With that line up all the companies were within $500 dollars of each other. So finally a month later with our decision narrowed down to what company was family owned, had a good reputation with reviews and the Better Business Bureau plus had a system that was the top of the line. A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air won us over with everything! Plus, Chris our salesperson was so professional and genuine - no pressure like other salespeople - he had no problem with us wanting to think about it.
Within a few days of signing the contract they were at our home. Showing up at the time scheduled, they were extremely clean and professional and they worked their butts off installing everything (heater and A/C) before 4pm - in the rain no less.
When the were finished the installers Matt, Victor and Alfredo showed my husband and I how to use the thermostat and made sure we were happy with everything before they left. The owner, Richard even came out to make sure we were happy with the product!
This is a company I am happy I went with. I would have never thought it would be a company that is located all the way in Vallejo to install in Pittsburg but they really do go the extra mile with everything they do.
I highly recommend them! -

by the owner. He was very anxious to make the situation right and
ended up refunding us the service charge and performing the work
(which was completed satisfactorily) at a discount. While we wish
this wasn't necessary in the first place, we appreciate A-1's follow

It's too easy to get ripped off by some air conditioning companies, so if you find a good one, let others know about it... and so here I am. I highly recommend this company.
My AC had not been cooling very well for a couple of years; the last few weeks had been especially noticable. I called A-1 Guaranteed and it was easy to get an appointment that was convenient for me and did not involve waiting 2+ weeks. On the day of service (about a week later), the service advisor was set to arrive between 8 and 10 am, but he did not arrive until about 10:30. Bad start, I'm thinking. I'm kind of pissed right away. However, he was totally apologetic and seemed sincere about it too. So, I got over it.... he was probably having a rough morning too.
So he goes down to look at my AC unit which has not been cooling very well. About 30-45 minutes later he's done. He cleaned the condenser, recharged the coolant, and some other stuff I didn't really follow. Bottom line, the very next day we had a heat wave, over 100 degrees, and the AC was working better than it ever has. He also waived the $75 dollar "diagnostic fee" due to his tardiness. The repair still wasn't cheap but it was a fair price and worth every penny to have my AC running in good shape again.
Friendly, honest people who do good work. Can't ask for much more....! -

I called them based on good Yelp reviews. Their "Comfort Advisor" came over at the appointed time, gave me a review of what their company could do in the way of a replacement gas furnace. So far, so good. We discussed the job at length, and he left me with a company folder and said he'd provide an estimate that evening by email. It's been over two weeks and I haven't heard from him. Why would he spend the time and effort to come over, and then not follow up to have some chance of getting my business? And waste my time, to boot? Not a clue. I've since hired another company to do the work, but A-1 didn't even get in the running since they never submitted a proposal.

I've been through plenty of HVAC companies in the past (thanks to a succession of persnickety furnaces and air conditioners), and I must say these guys are a dream.
They were recommended to me by a friend who used them for an AC installation. I was a bit skeptical -- they were out in Vallejo, and I'm in Oakland -- but I'm so glad I gave them a try.
First off, their customer service is impeccable. Call and you get a friendly, warm, personable human on the other line -- not a voicemail, not an automated system. They're great at scheduling around your preferences and offer a 2-hour window, rather than the typical 4-hour estimate. Plus -- and this is a huge plus with me! -- they will call you to let you know they're on their way about 10-15 minutes out, which is fabulous.
Second, they do fair, honest work, and aren't afraid to spend some time with you to work out the right solution. For example, we wanted to install air conditioning in our split-level home last summer. The catches: the downstairs, which is built into a hillside, is always much cooler naturally than the upstairs, which gets direct sun most of the day. We didn't want to turn that area into a walk-in freezer. We also have no windows that open (just French doors) in the main living area.
I thought a system of wall-mounted air conditioners just on the top floor would be the obvious way to go, rather than whole/house AC. Their estimator spend a solid hour walking me through the possible setups, figuring out exactly where the AC units could go, where ductwork could run, etc. Then he said he'd like to come back with his boss to double-check everything.
The next day, he was back with his boss and together, they reexamined the house and recommended to me that we actually go with whole/house AC and some top-of-the-line registers on the lower floor that could be closed off. The final solution actually cost me less than my original plan, and I really respected the time and effort they took to find the RIGHT solution -- not the most expensive one or the one the (misguided) homeowner had decided on.
They've serviced our furnace a couple of times as well, and it's always gone more quickly and affordably than I'd expected. In fact, we appreciate their service so much that we signed up for a year-long service agreement!
I highly, highly recommend these guys. Do yourself a favor and hire the best outfit in the business. -

I was very impressed and satisfied by the professionalism and honesty I received by Rich and the rest of the staff at A1. They do good work and are very warm and friendly. I will certainly call them again when need of HVAC. I would recommend them to anyone else to do the same.

These guys are THE BEST no kidding. I fired my my first contractor who was a little, and I mean a little cheaper because the workmen that they sent to my home were scary, rude etc. - A-1 Guaranteed stepped in and saved the day. They gave me a adjusted price to help me stay on budget, and they went beyond the norm to protect my house from rainy mud. I LOVE THEM, because they did an excellent job, and because they were cheerful and safe. I would recommend them and would definately use them again.
