Mangodilla....Awwww, yeah.
It's the happiest of hours, and only $3.50.

I would have given them more stars if they would have better service.  We rented a 2-person kayak for 2 hours and we called ahead to inquire about the wait.  It was estimated at 45 minutes, but it ended up being 1 hour 15 mins.  Yuck!

The problem we saw, there were tons of empty kayaks in the water, ready to be ridden, with people ready to get riders into the boats . . . but people weren't ready to get in.  I think the main problem was the life vest station.  It seemed like people signed their waivers and then waited a while to get their life jackets.  I don't know what the hold-up was, but it was annoying.

I liked the kayak ok, and it's a good place to have one, but it's annoying for the wait.  The price is decent, we paid $29 for 2 hours, even though it said $30 for 2, so we're not sure if they gave us some kind of discount for the wait or not.

The bathrooms were apparently redone, and I know that the men's now has a stall, sink, and shower!  (The b/f was extremely impressed by this.)

Recommend going to Lake Union over the Arboretum (better water, more sites to see), and you will get wet! :D

Me and pretty much everyone I know was in need of a margarita today, hence:  YAY for sun and Agua Verde! We were also early celebrating a certain birthday girl. Upon arrival we tried to score a seat on the patio but were told it'd be a 30-45 min wait, uuuuum no thanks, it was 4:30pm.

We opted for a table adjacent to the open windows and deck facing the water instead. It was almost like being outside. We were there early enough to partake in the hh so we had margs, chips and guacamole. There were a ton of chips and sizeable portion of guac. The salsa bar had this tasty, slightly sweet salsa for the tasting as well. We also enjoyed a mango quesadilla with chicken. It tasted better once drowned in salsa.

What loses this place a few stars though is the janky assed service. Our server was annoying and kept bothering us to order more food. Then we asked if we could move outside as I saw two tables become available but  it took about 10 minutes to get an answer while a hostess or waitress or whatever she was went to find our server and ask him. I told her we would close out our tab first if that was the concern. Finally we just said never mind and kept ourselves where we were.

I was too full after the chips and 'dilla but I did want to order something else on the regular menu as it all sounded delish. However, the line out the door was looking long and at this point I felt like they wanted us outta there. Fine, we'll go!

Stars for the location and the hh and I'd like to come back and rent a kayak sometime.

I here last weekend.  The wait for the Kayak was long.   But the who paddle experience is fun.  But I'll be sure to go somewhere that will allow booking next time.  Staff were friendly and informative however.

Not only do I love the fact that Agua Verde uses a lot of good quality, free-range meats, but I also enjoy the fact that the horchata is FABULOUS! Horchata fresa is also an option, even though I prefer the regular stuff. I love to come here and pick up mango quesadillas, and salmon burritos. You'll love it too. I had put it off for too long, and now I frequent this place as though someone has announced that it will close. Thankfully it won't, and for that I am happy! Also..if you hadn't caught the episode, Rachael Ray featured this restaurant on her Seattle visit for "$40 a day". Hurray for good publicity!

"They don't give a sh*t about you, because someone else will always be right behind you", or ahead of you for that matter. My companion stated that this place made her feel like she was in NY, well getting NY service that is. As a NYer, I guess i don't mind this as much, but i see her point - you are just a number here. The fish tacos were good - well the catfish ones were - the mahi left something to be desired. I give them four stars for offering 4 different kinds of fish tacos! Salmon and cod were the other two. The sweet, hot, and avocado tasting salsas were awesome.
Here's the problem - don't go and eat and expect to get on the last kayak ride of the day. When they say last to leave at 4:45, they really mean at least 4:30, and if they are really understaffed, don't expect the most friendly service past 4pm. We were made to feel guilty for coming in at the time we did (2 minutes before last kayaks allowed out, mind you). You have to have the kayaks back before 6 on Sundays. We rushed with our ride because of the departing words we were given. Cheap ride, but don't think this place is for maxing your relaxing - someone will be waiting on you, but you'll have to bus your own table.

Hooray for a one stop shop for Mexican food AND kayaking!

No one thing here stands out as amazing, but the mere fact that this place exists is four star-worthy. Easy kayak rentals, great location for a quick paddle either to the arboretum or Lake Union, and casual decent Mexican food! Of course I did go in the middle of a work day so I didn't have to fight the crowds. I did, however, have to park three blocks away, pay for parking, and worry the whole time I was kayaking that I would get a parking ticket since it maxes out at 2 hrs.

I would definitely return for a some exercise and a casual meal.

Went to Agua Verde on the 4th of July. If you're planning to rent a kayak, I suggest you come before 11am to avoid any crowds and by the time you're done at around noon, it'll be a perfect time to grab some lunch at the cafe. The rental prices are really soooo cheap at $15/hr; check out their website for their specials. There are basically 2 paddle destination options--on the right is Lake Union where you can check out boathouses, seaplanes, and a great view of downtown Seattle; on the left is the arboretum and more of a wildlife experience. The cafe upstairs will definitely satisfy the apettite you build after an hour or two of kayaking! They have the best damn fish tacos I have ever tasted!! I also suggest getting an extra order of chips because their salsa bar is amazing - try the chipotle sauce, alittle hint of spicy and sweet.

I don't think I've ever gotten excited about beans before.

As a college student, I accept that they are a perfectly good form of protein. I've been known to throw black beans onto a salad or put refried beans into my burritos. They serve a purpose, but that's where my appreciation for beans ends.

Until now. I don't know what Agua Verde does to their black bean puree. They must mix it with something, like cinnamon, or mole, or cocaine. The yam tacos were amazing, the dorado was delicious, and the smokey chipotle salsa was absolutely sublime... but the BEANS!

It's noisy, and it will take you a long time to get seated, but when you take your first bite, you won't care.

It's usually so totally crowded that we have given up on this place!  The food is good, I think I've been here twice.  They need a bigger restaurant because obviously everyone in Seattle likes to go here for good mexican food!

I have a perfectly good reason for now even knowing there was a paddle club associated with Agua Verde. The food is simply that good. The fish tacos are lights out good and the couple of times I've dropped in for a visit, the service is always quick. They are not quick because it's empty, but it's quick with a packed house and a line out the door. Automatic 3.5 stars for that. The food is top notch. You'll find great tastes here and one of the few places where Mexican seafood is both well prepared and not served out of a pickup truck. Nothing against taco trucks, but sometimes you've just got a craving for a chair rather than a curb.

This is my favorite restaurant in Seattle, I think.

I hate the crowds, and AV isn't spectacularly child-friendly. They're not gonna give 'em crayons or a pat on the head.

But the food comes fast, it's filling and it's not too expensive. In other words, a good value.

The kids dig the horchata and huge-ass quesadilla, and my husband and I usually order two dishes and some sides like green rice and cactus salsa, and we share in a big messy-mess feast of Mexican food deliciousness.

I visited Seattle last month and was brought to Agua Verde (on 5/25/08) by my friends. The line was long and it took a bit for our food to come, but it was worth it. I had the dorado which was excellent! My travel companion was also happy with his meal. Oh and I paid by debit card. The transaction was cleared and showed up on my statement a few days later.

Fast forward to today, June 30,2008. I check my bank statement and it shows ANOTHER charge to Agua Verde! It was the same amount as last month. I contacted my travel companion and he had the same issue for the amount he paid. I called my bank and was told the owner of AV could have ran their inventory tapes twice. I cancelled my card to be safe. I have yet to get a hold of the owner but this really upsets and bothers me.

This place has good food, but it gets 1 star for shady business practices!

I'll have to give it a 2nd try.  I was unimpressed with my first order there.  Usually I try the same thing at a variety of places which gives me a chance to really tell what I like and don't like, but I was feeling freewheeling and wild so I ordered the chicken verde.  The taste was good, but the chicken still had the bones and skin which I'm not partial to.  I was expecting chunks of chicken and not having to dig around for the meat.  The chips were good.  I forget which salsa I liked.  My dinner companion is a vegetarian.  He tried the yam something and found it to be too yammy.  But he really did enjoy the quesedilla with mushrooms.

we rented a two person kayak and paddled around lake union for a while then came back and ate in the restaurant. The paddle was fun and reasonably priced. The food was excellent! I had vegetarian tacos, and was a little nervous since I've never had yams in tacos before. OMG, they were fan$%^#ingtastic! I heart this place.

The food here is really really good.

The service....meh. College kids during the day...some pro servers in the eves. Be patient, have lowish expectations of pampering, expect to do some standing in line (depending on time of day), getting your own salsa, etc.

The price point is a little high, but it is because there is NO good food around this area - a bit of a monopoly.

It is close to the UW Health Sciences wing, Medical Center, Foege Building, UW Physics building, Recycled Cycles, and South Campus Center and makes for a really good lunch or after-work spot. Though it gets absolutely packed solid almost all the time.

In the evening, they have those handy vibrating buzzer things - so you can wander around and sit on the dock and watch the sun set while you're waiting for your table to open up.

The view is stunning and this is a great place for a date.
In the level below - the rent out kayaks to take out on the Montlake Cut and Lake Union. Never tried it - but seems pretty neat.  This place is situated right on the Montlake Cut (water passage that cuts Seattle in half as it becomes the "Ship Canal") so if you're into smelling salt water and admiring houseboats, you'll love it.

The salsas are top notch -especially the medium chipotle one. The mild one is a little too mild, the spicy one a little too showy.
Though it sounds weird, try the mangodilla: a quesadilla but with mangi inside.

All the tacos are superb and there are many veg options, including lots with exotic non-gringo ingredients (cacti, etc). My favorite, though, is the very "vanilla" cranberry chicken one. I seem to remember them having a striking mole' chicken, which is hard to find.
The owners of this place have really done their homework in Baja.

All the meat/produce is "open source" as I like to call it - meaning free range organic, blah blah usual stuff. So that could be one of the reasons for the higher pricepoint too.

All the margaritas are excellent and MUY FUERTE - my favorite one is the tuna-rita (no, there is no tuna juice in it - just the juice of an exotic-sounding cactus). It is not as sour as a traditional margarita and has a refreshing aftertaste.

A plus: during the day they have an espresso window and I think you can order food to go there.

Oh, and of course they have a full tequila menu (low shelf to top shelf).

after kayaking we checked out the shrimp tacos with a mango margarita  and they were both excellent and cheap! my favorite combo!! $ for the food and $$ for the kayaking.

I have been here a couple of times. Any summer and spring weather make this place a destination spot for many.

Don't let the three stars scare you- I still recommend that you go and try it out- Maybe do take-out and head to a nearby dock...

There is a take out window that serves the outside with certain hours. I have never used this. There is a al carte line to the left of the entrance we have ordered from here and got good fish tacos. There is also a host station that will sit you right away or give you a beeper to call you back from your wandering or standing when you table is ready. This is most useful for waiting for a deck (which is covered) table when it is sunny out. The view is the harbor and lots and lots of boats. I have heard rumors of a bar section that you take your ordered al carte drinks and food to so you can chill out in the sun, but have not found or enjoyed it.

There is a salsa bar with three types... I love each one of them. The happy hour runs from 4-6 with cheap margaritas and things like nachos and quesadillas- they even have a mangodilla with green onion and the tasty fruit. The hh food is around $4-6. The dinner menu has traditional food you'll find at most Mexican restaurants with a few new flavors thrown in and a few unique items like portabella mushroom, yam, and veggie tacos etc.

There is free parking in a dirt lot across the street after 5pm that is labeled for the UW. There is kayaks and canoes for rent below the restaurant on the water.

Try it- it doesn't rock- but it has a great vibe going in the summer even though my lack of service last time I went made me a little annoyed.

Quality Fresh Mexican food with patio water view. Great place for summer.  This is PURE mexican food, none of that commercialized shit.  I will continue to keep on coming back.  4-stars because it still doesn't beat TACO TRUCKS.  Service is superb, waiting to be seated kind of takes long depending on the time of  day.  Kind of crowded and tight, just go when you think no one will be there.  Don't go at the obvious times...Lunch and dinner. Quality Mexican food here, BE SATISFIED.

My friends and I were need of serious outdoors time while we were vacationing in Seattle. (You'll feel the same why after a couple meals at Piroshky! Piroshky!) We asked our hotel where to go for an accessible (from downtown), inexpensive, non-touristy, exercise filled adventure, and boy was the nail hit on the head--Ague Verde!

I hadn't had a lot of kayak experience, and what little I had was from years ago, another friend was in the same boat--not literately, although double kayaks are an option. My point is, we didn't know what were doing, but kayaking is simple, and I guarantee you'll catch on quickly.

My favorite part of the leisurely puddle was maneuvering around the nature preserve. I saw lots of blue herons, a couple turtles, and even some minnows jumping out of the water. I'd hoped to see some beavers, but I hear they're more active in the morning, so I missed them romping around. Another thing I enjoyed doing was paddling beneath the freeway pass, the cars passing up-top made for interesting sounds and the low cover made me feel like a (dorky) explorer--watch for thick spider webs near the pillars!

This place is like Hypetown USA!

I went with my friends after the U-District fair this year, when it was like 80 degrees so we thought it would be a perfect place to go.  There was a huge line and I think that is pretty common because they don't take reservations.

I was a little annoyed that they don't make their own chips...what kind of Mexican restaurant does that?  Whatever.  And I think they charged us separately for them...I should just bring my own Tostitos next time to get the same effect for free!

This was pretty much made up for with my mango-dilla which was awesome.  Get the pork.  If you are a vegetarian...I feel sorry for you and that's all I'm gonna say.  Because 1, you will never enjoy a mango dilla with pork and 2, you are a vegetarian.

The waitress also never brought me flatware or a glass...that was annoying.  I'll probably go there again though because it's a nice place for summer dining and it ended up being under 30 dollars for a party of 3-- we all got appetizers and one of us got a drink.

I would love this place more for lunch.  Skip the crowds, the long waits, the cramped tables and hopefully the higher price.   The food was pretty traditional mexican fair...not American Mexican real Mexican.  I tired their Tuna-Rita which was pink, big turn off, and not too amazing.  I did get the Baja-Rita and it packed a punch both in flavor and alcohol.  The salsas were good and I appreciate the El Yucateco Habanero sauce on the table.  It was a great place to hang with your friends enjoy the views and munch on some food.  It is not the be all end all it was hyped up as.

And what is the deal with the waiter?  I couldn't get a smile or nice word from him all night.

If I'm in Seattle, Agua Verde Cafe  is one place that I am sure to make it to.  I love getting any of the tacos de la casa. The food is fresh and authentic. They serve several different types of yummy margaritas. I recently had a Mexican Chai Tea and it was delicious too. If the weather is nice, it's a great place to sit outside.

You may have to wait a little while in line to order your food, but that's how you know its worth it.

I've eaten here a handful of times and I honestly don't see the appeal and why the lines are so long.  Actually I can see why the lines are so long, inefficiency in the service.    The food is okay, but not anything 'special'.   Atmosphere, well, it's all about the view I s'pose.  There are way better authentic Mexican restaurants out there, hell...even those ones that sell Mexican food out of a van or bus.

This is your more yuppified Mexi-food with a view and a lot of hype.   It's a damn shame too because I work so close to it and it'd be so convenient.  The Hospital Plaza is almost a better option or Northlake Pizza or Ivar's Salmon House.

Two stars for serving beer close to where I work and during lunch time.

Some of the best Mexican I've ever had and I don't even like Mexican! I'm very picky when it comes to Mexican so I tend to stay away from most Mexican joints but a friend of mine told me this place was one of the best and I don't deny it.

There was a bit of a wait, space is very limited and the table next to us kept bumping into us. It made it a bit awkward for me to get out and make it to the restroom. The service was almost non-existent but they seemed to be a bit understaffed. If you have the time it's worth the wait.

Note: they also offer salsa and chips but it is not complimentary.

Recommendations:
Dorado - grilled Mahi Mahi tacos
Bacalao - fried cod in a coconut beer tempura tacos
Enchiladas - mixta (EXCELLENT!)

If you have time the kayaking is a lot of fun and students also receive a discount. I plan to try one of there full moon kayaking tours this summer since they only offer it a few times a year.

If I were to rate the food - I'd give it 4.5 stars, but only because the chips could be better.  Otherwise, I give it a full thumbs up.  Definitely the fish taco is the best (I think it's called the Bacalao???) with the potatoes.  Lots of good choices for a good price.

If I were to rate the whole experience, I give it 4 stars, because seriously the line is crazy long.  The food is worth the wait, I'm just not a patient person.  But on a sunny summer Seattle day, it's pretty much paradise.  Just make sure to go with no more than 4 people, because you might end up waiting forever.

*No reservations
*Tip: You can take the food to go and eat out on the patio next to the restaurant.
*Having booze and chips while you wait makes the time go faster.
*They use organic and animal cruelty free products which is a plus.

2 stars for their location. No stars for their service. Its such a production to get a seat. Everytime I've been there I get rushed out of my table, even after we've spent a lot of dough.

Food is average. Drinks are weak. Happy hour prices are good though. Nice Salsa bar.

Parking stinks.

We had a crazy long wait on a Friday night and the staff seemed like we were putting them out. They just did not seem happy to be there.

The salsa is unique and original, but the chips are out of the package. The drinks are very good. I really like the strawberry horchata.

Overall the experience was mediocre, but I did like my masa cakes.

I think it would be fun to go for salsa and drinks after a round of kayaking.

I hate to do this because I once loved Agua Verde and I still really like the food, but after our last visit I just don't know how many times we will be back.  The good food almost doesn't make up for the combination of bad parking, long waits, high prices, a manic waiter and little tiny family unfriendly bathrooms.

I love fish tacos and the Tacos De Bagre (Catfish) are some of the best fish tacos that I've ever had.  I always get them, no matter what.  The mangodilla is good, if you like mango in a quesadilla (my wife does, I'm indifferent).  And during our last visit, I tried the mole burrito.  I liked it, the mole was kind of chocolate-y but it wasn't overpowering or sweet.

But the best thing at Agua Verde is their chipotle salsa.  To me, it's near perfection as far as salsa goes.  Sweet and a little bit spicy and super delicious.  We used to just pick up a pint of it ($3.50) occasionally to eat at home.

The problem is all the other things about Agua Verde...

Parking - Now that the UW has so many new buildings down here, it can be a real pain to find street parking.  At least if you go after 6:00, you don't have to deal with the computerized meters.

Long waits - As much as I like the food, I can't justify waiting as long as it takes sometimes.  Even on a Tuesday, there was a pretty hefty wait.

High prices - In comparison to California - where I live now - it's not bad.  For Seattle, three tacos for $1o.25 almost breaks the bank.  Not to mention $2.50 for chips.  Dang mooching college kids ruining it for the rest of us.

Manic waiter - Our waiter the last time we went was the most manic waiter we've ever had.   He was too in a hurry to even properly stop and take our order.  Then he used our table as his serving station.  He put a big platter filled with multiple orders on it right in the middle of our table and one-by-one served other tables while we stared hungrily at their food and drinks.  That was definitely a first.  Service has never been very good, but it hit an all time low with this waiter.

Tiny, family unfriendly bathrooms - Agua Verde is where we came to the sad realization that we can't take our newborn little girl everywhere we like to go.  Some restaurants are very family unfriendly.  A little tiny bathroom with no counter space is the biggest problem.  She needed to be fed and then get her diaper changed.  We had nowhere to do it.

I'm sure we'll be back eventually.  But for now, it's just become too stressful an experience eating there.  I don't think a place like Agua Verde should be stressful and it wasn't in the beginning, but It's been going downhill in that respect for years.

Okay first off I gotta say they really need make their free parking much more visible because I always end up paying at the meters. Today was great got a seat right away and got food literally two minutes after I sat down. Usually there is a line out the door so i recommend getting there early or late lunch times. Especially in the summer. Food was very tasty and the tortilla chips come with three different salsa which are all good. One warning the habenero sauce on the table is EXTRA CALLIENTE!!!! only a few drips will do. The other people I was with lined their tortillas with the sauce and literally had tears coming out their eyes.....also in the summer its a great place to kayak before or after lunch..but its shut down right now cause they're fixing the marina.

Awesome location, great view, good food. Had the pork tamale tamale with rice and beans. Filling and excellent flavor. Definitely plan to go back and hopefully avoid the crowds.

Went here for dinner on a weeknight and had a bit of a wait but it was worth it.  For lunch, I went to the take-out window and got served right away.  The mango quesadilla is amazing and so is the jimaca-pineapple salsa.

Note: I'm focusing on the restaurant here as I've never done the kayak rentals.

I've been coming here, albeit infrequently, for almost 4 years and it rarely disappoints. It's definitely not the best Mexican food in the world, and Casa D's has better burritos, but the food is on the better side of average, and it's great with friends or a date (you will generally have plenty of time to talk, the last time I was here I had to wait 30 minutes on a Tuesday at 7:30pm for 2 and the weather wasn't even nice out) and delicious margaritas which would make a great start to a U District pub crawl.

The basket of chips ($2.50) to start is huge and worth it when accompanied with the three salsa choices on the bar which includes a salsa verde mild enough for the spice averse.

I most often will order the mangodilla appetizer ($7 for a whole) (quesadilla with mango) and add chicken or pork ($3) and make it an entree. It's about double what I can eat, especially after the chips, so I take the rest with me for dinner the next day.

One warning is that they can get super busy, rivaling the line I've experienced at La Carta de Oaxaca - the worst time is probably late Spring, when the weather is nice out but UW is still in session.

On second thought, nevermind. Agua Verde is terrible, don't go there so it's easier for me to get a table...

When I crave a fish taco this is where I go.  I'm pretty much stuck on the Bagre (catfish) or  Bacalao (fried cod). DELISH!

Its also great to go kayaking in the spring/summer from the paddle club below than grab some food afterwards.

As I'm writing this summer-end review, my mouth is drooling from thinking about the delicious fish tacos (I've tried the spicy catfish and the grilled halibut. Both are excellent.) and my pale ass skin is drooling thinking about the hot sun that hits their deck while eating said tacos.

The black beans with cotija cheese is as close to crack as I care to get. It's really the cojita - the beans are a mere vehicle. They're really damn good. Even better if you happen to beat the crowd there and don't have to join the queue going out the door.

If you're looking for a burrito-to-go, look elsewhere. Sure, I shoulda known better than to pay the Agua Verde price without enjoying the Agua Verde ambiance, but it was the only thing between me and the bus stop that day, so I splurged.

Anyway, a burrito-to-go is what I order when I need to eat on-the-go. It should be neatly packaged for relative driplessness and require no utensils. When Agua Verde tried to pass a ginormous box across the counter, I figured they had the wrong order. They didn't. It was a lovely squash-filled number with all the lettuce, tomato, salsa and guac ON THE SIDE. Um, and I'm supposed to eat this on Joe Metro how? I got chastized for bringing my coffee on there the other day (seriously).

The good news is, I managed to scarf the whole thing down at the bus stop and got a greater portion of my RDI  of veg than from the usual burrito-to-go. But hey, Metro drivers everywhere will thank you to roll it all up together in foil next time, eh?

I kicked off my amazing visit to Seattle with a paddle around the lake and lunch at Agua Verde.  I've never been kayaking before so this was a really pleasant experience.  The staff is super nice and the kayaks were clean and in good condition.  We went in the morning so the lake was still glassy and easy to paddle through.  I had a great time spying on the houseboaters and exploring the arboretum.  Just stay away from the lily pads or else you'll end up being swarmed by bugs and you'll get tons of seaweed wrapped around your paddle.  lol.

After our trip around the lake, we headed to the restaurant. I read the reviews about the bad service, but dude... you order your food cafeteria style.  What do you expect??  As for the food, it was delicious!  The mushroom quesadilla was a little salty, but the carnitas tacos and steak sandwich were sooo good.  I'd have kept eating if only I didn't finish my food so quickly...

nothing to add, but totally awesome.
is it weird to say that i have seen plastic fruit be used at other places to be a way of identifying tables?
