$5 Happy hour goes till 10pm or something ridiculous like that. PLENTY of time to get happy after a long work day.

Cocktails are inventive and tasty.  The lychee martinis were going down like sweet water.  Other cocktail options available.

Space is big with huge loft ceillings.  Rotatingly new artwork keeps the space fresh.

Great, if you want to stand around and stare at one another while trying to decipher through lip reading what exactly the other people are saying.

Perfect, if you want to be jabbed in the hip and back with oversize Marc Jacobs shoulder bags.

Do yourself a favor and avoid on the weekend and Thursdays unless you get a table.  A wednesday is a great night and easier to have a conversation if you are with a group.
Great happy hour, good crowd and decent drinks.  Not the best martini I've had but the wine is good.

I would give it 5 stars but I keep on forgetting everything that goes down on at Verlaine.

I find myself saying, I did what at Verlaine alot....

Run "you" Down

Pros
Happy HourS (6-10pm everyday)
Good mix of people
Music is decent
Located in an area where you can go to different places afterwards...

Cons
It makes me think I might have a problem.... nah I'm good.

This place is an amazing happy hour location.  Everyone talks about the $4 lychee martinis but the rest of the menu (of drinks) are just as good. I once had my bag stolen at this place and they called me when they found it.  Sadly, I lost my ipod but I don't blame verlaine- it happens.  Would I go again?  Yes... even if you don't want to make it a night at verlaine- make it a drink or 6.

Hard to beat the $5 lychee martinis and sangria, and I don't even like lychee.  The asian tapas were interesting.  I wasn't too big a fan of the five-spice calamari, but was blown away by the chicken satay on an awesome bed of jasmine rice - the best I've ever had.

If you think going to the Lower East Side is braving it, this place is totally worth braving it for.

I read all the past reviews for Verlaine before planning my 21st birthday party back in May. I was having it on a Monday night, so we essentially had the whole venue to ourselves. The staff was very accommodating and our waitress was very nice. Some of us arrived around 9pm so we got to enjoy the happy hour (one of my girl friends ordered 4 yuenglings for herself around 9:50pm). A couple of my guests were surprised with Verlaine's high ceilings and spacious couches since the building looks like a brick oven from the outside.

A couple months later, the Verlaine has become a favorite happy hour spot among my friends with 2-3 of them having their own birthdays there. It's a great place to start the night before bar hopping around LES.

My only complaint is the way the waitress puts everyone at your table on one check. You can ask for your own check, but watch out - we've had instances where the waitress mixed up some charges (it gets confusing). Keep track of your orders and make sure the waitress knows who you are.

Recommended for: Night out with friends.

Drinks/Food 3, Service 3, Ambiance 4.

After hitting up an awesome meal at Soy my friend and I head over to Verlaine to meet up with a group of friends.  I had heard about it from my fellow 'yelpers-in-crime' and was excited to try it out.

Service was ok, nothing spectacular but we did have to flag down the waitress every now and then.  If you go up to the bar the service is faster but women beware, the men are on the prowl and don't care if your guy is standing next to you.  Decor wise it was ok, definitely prefer the front to the back but the layout is odd.  If you're in a small group the back with tables would be nice but the big couches and changeable seats make large get-togethers fun.

As far as drinks go, standard.  I have to say the sake and lychee drinks honestly tasted like socks!  Now I'm not saying that I know what socks taste like, but when you drink something and the taste in your mouth is reminiscent to the smell of dirty gym socks back in high school - yeah, that's not a drink you want to drink twice.

Overall, fun laid back place for a good large meet-up.  Wasn't entirely packed but if in the LES, I'd prefer White Rabbit over here.

Sean Approved:  Ok.

Happy hour until 10 o clock- sold!
Their happy hour drink menu consists of: lychee martinis, white and red sangria, and $4 glasses of wine, among other things.  The sangria and lychee martinis are really popular with my friends here but since I don't like sweet drinks, I just have mutiple glasses of wine.
The appetizers are not on sale, they're around $8-12, and really delicious. I recommend the shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce (they're thick here, not skinny like some places), curry puffs (REALLY spicy!), ginger chicken wings and the chicken sticks with jasmine rice. Probably everything on the menu is good.

I come here on Thursday nights- it gets mega-crowded though but it's a good mix of people- not all i-banker d-bags or hipster annoyances. Kind of a little of everything! Nice, normal people.

We're usually standing at the bar, but if you sit down, the waitress service is suprisingly efficient, considering how crowded it gets.

Enjoy! Then, you can go to Fat Baby next door after HH if you want (they don't have food there though)

I met friends here for my birthday and we had a great time!  The drinks are super cheap for happy hour and go until 10pm every night- they have a fantastic unique selection with an Asian infused style.

The bar itself is very narrow so it gets crowded fast, so if you are going with a larger group try to get a table.  The waitress was very slow, but on the other hand it was a busy night.

Wow. Happy hour until 10pm, 7 days a week? I'm there.
Came here on a Saturday around 8pm for a couple of drinks after dinner. It didn't start getting crowded until 9:30pm.

Lychee martini is pretty good. The sangrias are pretty much all ice, but the white sangria wasn't bad. I wasn't really liking the red sangria but maybe it's b/c I tasted it after the lychee. It tasted like cough syrup.

The calamari is good but the spring rolls were just average. Our waitress was attractive and pretty attentive. The place is pretty dark inside, but overall the decor is nice.

Great date spot, great spot to bring friends, get place to pregame, great drinks.  Bottom line one great place to be!  Happy hour till some late hour, some of the best concoctions I've ever tasted, and a good staff.

Drink menu has expanded.  My favorite is still the flors de mal.  They soak veggies in their vodka and flavor it this way.  This drink has a jalapeno pepper kick.  It is truly awesome!

Keith's the man.  Take care of him.

mmm... I love biting into a drunkeningly delicious vodka-soaked lychee (or two) when I finish my Martini.  Verlaine mut know that...and that's why everyone kicks back those $5 suckers so quickly during Happy Hour... I think they've got a good scheme going here (minus the crowds).

Real cool Asian inspired bar in the lower east side. Vibe and decor is chill with undertones of orange and brown.   Sangria was refreshing after a hot and humid day pounding the pavement in New York.  My friend and I ordered calamari, salmon and chicken wings.  The salmon was cooked to perfection with a hint of honey and ginger. It also comes with a side of white rice. Ideal to share.  It was so yummy!  Calamari and chicken were also cooked just right and came to our table piping hot!  Would totally come back here for a light dinner to catch up with friends!

Oh lychee martini... such a love/hate relationship we have. They're so good here and so friggin cheap I just can't help but drink like ten of them. But my head hates me for it the next day. I love the setting at Verlaine, the music, the drinks and prices. Happy hour till 10pm!!! Cant get any better than that! I also love the spring rolls alongside my martini- however most people I've brought here do not feel the same. The place can get pretty packed sometimes and once everyones drunk the people can get a little rowdy, so I think its better to come on a slower weeknight.

Before the Yelp social happy hour came into this LES haven, I was already here chugging away at their super reasonable drink specials.  Oddly enough, I thought most bars in the area were like this one, I didn't realize what a gold mine I had found for a happy hour spot.  Alas, the popularity soared and the place became more crowded than ever.

The place gets super stuffy after 7PM on Thursday / Friday nights, and finding places to stand let alone sit down can be a real pain.  Though the place isn't all that large (few bars in the LES are), the decor is charming and adequate enough to be inviting to the masses.  The drinks are good and unless one has the luxury of using a cocktail waitress, finding a way to the bar can be troublesome.  Patience is a virtue and Verlaine understands this, that's why the drink specials last all the way till 10PM.

Avoid at all costs on the weekend evenings (gets veeeeeeery B&T) but any early evening or weeknight and this place is AWESOME! Their food is pretty good (for a bar) but mostly it's all about the unbeatable drink specials. Lychee martinis for $4?! Needless to say, I always have a rough morning after an evening here - but in the BEST way!

This is place is pack of people most times for happy hour. I love the lychee martinis and the calamari. The waitress was easygoing and nice. We drank like 8  martinis
I would recommend this place for late afternoon. The only bad thing is that it is a dark inside so if you want to enjoy the sun.. this wouldn't be a place you should come. But other than that it is a perfect place.
I cant believe that I was going to get drunk drinking martinis, I was wrong.

Alas, I think Verlaine's heyday has come and gone. I used to hear my dear friends telling me how it was quiet, had a great happy hour, and scrumptious tapas-like fare.

Sure -- it is true about the great happy hour and the tapas. But everyone and their brother now knows about Verlaine, thus -- making it loud, crowded and noisy. By some miracle my friends and I got a teeny tiny table to sit at. We were elbow-to-elbow with the folks at the tables on either side of us. It was so loud, we had to shout in order to be heard!

The drinks and the food were great, but I'd only come back if it was early and the crowd hadn't yet begun to form...

It was Saturday night, 830ish. I arrived to find this place somewhat packed w/ glittering martini glasses, complimenting the rows of warm candlelight. It wasn't a breathtaking scene, but it was pleasant...and then the view got fun half an hr later when the bar gets slammed w/ chirpy cocktail goers. The music was....loud, along w/ the rest of the restaurant. After a glass of their much raved about Sangria and Lychee Martini, I became a happy gal. 4 bucks??? I am soooo coming back AND bringing back up alcoholics.

In conclusion:
Drinks: AWESOME
Ambience: pretty good, AWESOME after a couple of drinks
-don't sit in the back tables...walls are dull, and its next to the loo
Food: standard (not culinary arts, but great when u get the munchies)
     -deserves 3 stars, max

Walking out, you realize you have a sorethroat (from screaming at eachother)....but that's like any other night of drinking at the bars

I haven't been to Verlaine in a while and even when I lived in the area I was never a regular here but my friend and her crazy visiting Polish friends wanted to come here for cucumber martini's.

It was a cold, late Tuesday night and they had a bouncer outside (poor guy) and my silly friend forgot her ID (but she is wayyyyy old enough) and he let us sweet talk our way inside because we work in the neighborhood. And we're cute girls:)

Verlaine is a nice spot. A little too loungy for my normal taste but with the candles and the cozy couches it could be romantic if you are looking for that.
I am really into the art on the wall and I hear they have art openings there. I'd be interested in coming back to see the rotating pieces they put up.

On the the most important thing: the drinks.
Now look, I'm not a foofy drink gal. Most days, especially in the winter, I am a bourbon or whiskey drinker, usually more than happy to drink it neat or with a rock or two.
But I'm flexible. I'm adventurous. I'll give it a try even if cucumber martini's feel a bit too summery right now.
Plus the cucumber vodka is made in house. I do like homemade flavor vodkas. Who doesn't? They are delicious!  And this drink was very delicious. A tad on the sweet side so I probably couldn't have more than 5 or 6. Ha!

And I've gotta come back for this happy hour I keep reading about. $4 martini's until 10 pm!!! Oh, no you didn't!

I would say this is the spot for those of you who can get out early for a great happy hour time down in the lower east side. First of all, the Lychee martinis @ 4 bucks a pop are unbeatable. They are delicious. Their tapas are also excellent and healthy too!  I have nothing but great things to say about the bartenders but the main cocktail waitress they have, she is HORRIBLE and slow as hell.  Other than that, it's a fun environment where I can actually hear my friends talk and can kick back for some great tasting cocktails and food at a great price in a cool environment.  Definitely a place you will find me at often!

It's just as good after an afternoon of shopping as it is on a night out.  It's been a while since I've been to Verlaine, and it's always nice to come back.  Their $4 lychee martinis and sangrias can't be beat, although their 2 for 1 Yuengling special is now $3 (still a great deal).  Their tapas is pretty good, although nothing to write home about.  The service, in my experience, has always been good, although I'm so over their lack of space.

PROS:
chill loungy atmosphere
20 something crowd
$4 happy hour till 10pm (martinis, sangrias, mixed drinks)
scrumptious tapas
DJ playing chill music

CONS:
must get there right after work as it gets crowded FAST
shitty bathrooms (literally. 1 of the 2 stalls had a toilet full of feces)
7 wings on a nice plate does not justify the price of $9

getting VERY DRUNK for less than 30 bucks..yeah i'd come back!!

I did not realize this place was so popular on yelp until I got home to see the reviews. My experience here was in a large group for someone's birthday. There is no crazy decor here, but it is a nice loungy atmosphere and certainly no pretentiousness. Our waitress was great - prompt and polite and she made getting drinks a lot easier.

ahh* i like this place.

space was dimly lit, a faint red tinge to the light (is everyone supposed to look sexier in rosy light? hah, it didn't work. =P )  local artists' work adorning the walls, a mix of yuppie after work, arty neighborhood pple....not crowded, just pleasant on a monday evening though i can imagine weekends being a madhouse.

$5 for the spiciest, ginger-spiked bloody mary.... (did i taste coconut in the lychee martini? not my favorite. i prefer decibel's sake-based lychee martini. it's cleaner. ) a little shot of fleurs du mal which was pretty good from the friendly bartender.

didn't try the food but the menu looks serviceable, especially after a few tipples..

eh, i guess- hello verlaine, hello happy hour!

Tears rolled down my eyes as British "DJ Rick Adams" wildly gesticulated and bounced up and down on the couch at Verlaine as he explained his four years as tv chat show host for kids and how he got the job. The cure for acne? A paper bag over the head. I know something else that's the cure for....

Met up with a huge group of friends for happy hour on a Friday. The gods were smiling on us as somehow our party managed to secure all of the couches at the front of the bar, which turned out to be very fortuitous, as it provided a natural barrier between us and the 'just turned 21' crowd that mobbed the rest of the place. And most of the Lower East Side on a Friday night.

My how times have changed.

Good atmosphere and we were able to find an open table at 1am so that's cool.  We were really excited to try some of the food but unfortunately the kitchen closes at midnight so missed out.  We also missed out on the happy hour prices  but even without the happy hour prices the lychee martin is only $8 compared to $16 at the W.  A pretty chill place and the kind of atmosphere we were looking for.

I wasn't in on the meeting of the financiers of Verlaine when they decided to come up with a concept for their bar, but I'm pretty sure this is how it went:

"OK people, what we should be doing is to somehow condense all the annoying aspects of the Lower Eastpacking District and put them into our bar.  I'm talking bad crowd, overpriced drinks, cheesy lounge decor, you name it!"

The tree is sorta cool, though, I guess.

Yeah, I guess I should have known better than to try to go to a bar across from THOR, but you live and learn, right?

Avoid at all costs!

hard to say anything new than what's already been said about Verlaine.  One of my favorite bars in the city, Verlaine has this southeast Asian theme going on - primarily Vietnamese in nature.  They have a great selection of special cocktails, including their popular Lychee Martinis.

I don't know about you but lychees are the strangest fruit for many people to encounter.  They have a unique taste, but strange texture.  And they kinda look like embryos.  Anyway...

Verlaine has a happy hour until 10pm where their lychee martinis are half off.  Otherwise, their drinks are normally around $10.  My favorite drinks are the Southeast Sangria (sangria with loquat and rambutan syrups) or the Locojito (a mojito with coconut rum and loquat syrup).  They even have drinks with a hot pepper infused vodka - to add a spicy kick!

And their food isn't bad too... they serve tapas style.  I suggest the fried portobello mushroom dumplings with spinach.  To die for, seriously.

They have rotating art on the walls - sometimes really cool, sometimes really weird.  But it's interesting still!

Bathrooms are generally clean.  Use the one on the main floor rather than the one in the basement.

Drawbacks are it's not very big and can get very very crowded, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.  I had my 23rd birthday here, and loved it, though!

The bartenders are great, too.... Keith, Oscar, and Gary are all great, and Victoria is a sweetheart :)

You can tell I'm a regular.  hah.

When I heard that there were $4 lychee martinis (and red or white sangrias and 2-for-1 beer) to be had at Verlaine's super long Happy Hour, I wanted to rush right over, but I kept putting it off.

Well, I finally made it and the lychee martinis are great - enough to earn Verlaine two stars!

What's not great?

The fact that the waitress keeps your change when you never said that it was a tip.  Biatch, I am not a cheapo!  I would've told you to keep it when you tried to give it back to me.  Please don't ever assume that I'm tipping you, okay?

Next.  When I order a drink, can I get it when I order it?  I really don't want to have to order my drink with you FOUR times.  Yes, I said FOUR!  It only took 45 minutes for you to bring the damn thing to me.  Yep, that makes me so happy.

You had me at $4 lychee martinis, but you lost me with your surly service and overcrowded digs...

Good Bye!

Very cozy and loungy bar... I like!  The night I stumbled into Verlaine, I was out with a big group and we just happened to walk towards Fat Baby's and we didn't want to wait in line so checked this place out.  I like it much better than Fat Baby's... and would definitely go again.  If you're lucky enough to get the lounge chair sofa area, do so!

How can you beat $4 lychee martinis and sangrias until 10pm? I had a great time catching up with friends in the very back table at Verlaine. The only reason I'm not giving it that fifth star is because it was literally impossible to move around once we sat down - so packed. But again, that's sort of expected on a Friday night, isn't it?

My delectable NYC tour guide brought me to this cute spot before dinner one night.  Home of her favorite lychee martini and happy hour every damn day of the week, the spot kicks ass.  The decor felt a little lacking to me, but the drinks certainly delivered.  If I had time for more than one drink, believe you me, I would've!
We definitely need to expand on this concept elsewhere in the country.

This place might be a tad overrated.  A classic 3 star from me, because of the douchiness of the crowd alone.  The bartenders were all really friendly and accomodating, as my friend and I were basically designing our own martinis with lillet and vodka.

The ambiance is nice.  Very warm and orange-y.  Indistinguishable music blaring at a decent volume in the background.  Lots of tables to cozy up to - but I prefer the bar, myself.  Definitely packed pretty tight on weekends - even though we headed out relatively early... 10:30 or so? Nice strong drinks (which I think are a TAD overpriced, but whatever).

If you go, just realize that
a) it will be packed
b) those it will be packed with will be wannabe douchebags and the women who keep them in the lifestyle they are accustomed to
c) those women are assholes too
d) when those women have their backs turned, said men will wink at you or blow you kisses

Oy vey.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!!!!!!!

NEXT!

That, my friends, is the sound of a bell. Specifically, the death knell of Verlaine-as-Friday-Yelpy-destination. After this past Friday's lackluster experience with the bat -- I mean WAITRESS -- from hell, not to mention claustrophobia-inducing crowds, I am prepared to write this place off as past its prime.

While there are redeeming factors, namely Carlos the Bouncer, $4 drinks during happy hour, a 10PM happy hour, and rather tasty calamari, I generally like (1) to hear my charming companions' conversational contributions and (2) not to have murderous tendencies towards the IMPOSSIBLY BATTY AND BITCHY WAITRESS. You know who you are.

Thus, while it's been nice knowing you, Verlaine, now that I know the Back Room is nearby and, oh!, is that Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery a block away from there?, I recognize that some things just have their expiration dates, and you, you have reached yours.

I'm outtie 5000.

Five stars for the $5 Lychee martini... You just cannot go wrong with that and especially the hours are from 7pm - 10 pm. COME ON! It cannot get any better. Lovely lovely spot although if you come a bit late than everyone else, you are screwed. All seats are taken quickly! The location of Verlaine is within other fabulous local bars so in the event that you want to bar hop, it is feasible.

The Mark W. Diaries - Part Four

Friday

My name is Mark, and, "I have a cunning plan". I have decided that I will show up at the popular yelp hang-out, and try to take advantage of anyone who has had enough alcohol to find me attractive. If yelpers continue to thumb their nose at me (why isn't that listed under the don'ts in Maxim Magazine's guide to bar conversations?), I will try and hook up with any of the "Stupid Girls" that stand out in the crowd when yelpers are around. If everything fails, at least I can feel up some random girl's bottoms, as the place gets crowded on a weekend. I rub my hands with glee...Naughty, Naughty.

Saturday

Life stinks. My cunning plan went wrong on a fantastic scale! First, the friendly bouncer laughed when he saw my Doctor ID. And, kept it. Then as I walked inside, I stepped on the 4 inch high heels of a girl who tripped and fell on her face. In the process, she also threw up all over my feet, which was a first as normally I have started chatting up a girl when this happens. As I walked over her motionless frame to make my way to the bar, I noted with regret that she had the word "Juicy" on her ass. Damn, one target 'wasted'. Wait, let me chalk that to 'Maybe', I think.

I ordered my $4 Lychee martini (from the tips left at the bar, hehe) and tried to find someone to make small talk. I saw a small group where Dr D is holding court. I stand behind and listen to him. He seems to be talking sense, from the approving nods. As he ended with "Guys on yelp, be cool, be cool" I walked over to him and introduced myself.

Mark W: What would you advise me?
Dr. D: That's a tough question, Mark. You should probably hang around bars, instead of on talk threads.
Mark W: Why?
Dr. D: Because, noisy and crowded bars like this are perfect for people like you. Loud music and alcohol help people without any substance connect with likeminded folks. In bars, you fill up what you don't hear or understand with what you EXPECT to hear. Just keep a strong body language - smiling and nodding, alternatively, every few seconds.
Mark W: Will that work for me?
Dr. D: That depends. "Who do you attract"?
Mark W: Generally, very clingy women. One would think after the paid hour is up, they would leave. But, dammit, they have no brains.

Hearing this, Dr. D disappears and I tried to make my way to someone else. I recognized the famous yelper, "He who goes *poof* in a cab", (HWGPIAC) and greet him.

Mark W. (acting cool, tilting head): 'ssup?
HWGPIAC (penetrating eyes): Do you know Paul Verlaine?
Mark W: Was he here? Basic Instinct, right?
HWGPIAC: No, that's Paul Verhoeven. I was talking about the poet, you doofus! Forget it! I see we couldn't possibly have anything in common.
As he starts to leave, I give up the pretence and fall on my feet.

Mark W: Please teach me, Master Sensei! I am in awe of your skills! I, Mark W, will be your grateful slave forever.
HWGPIAC: I believe in integrity above all. You have none.
Mark W: But, don't you also believe in good Karma?
HWGPIAC: Yes, but,...... ok, one advice only before I go *poof*: Whatever you do, Do it with style and class!  *poof*

Those words ring in my ears as I walk towards the large table of yelpers. Must be classy and stylish, I repeat to myself. I spot "She who has two billion faces". She seems friendly and offers me some excellent Calamari. I try to impress her that I am also a Foodie, and thus one to be respected.

Mark W: You know, I was at Red Hook Ball Fields after reading the reviews and talk threads.
She: Did you like it?
Mark W.: Yes, but I was disappointed that they didn't have my favorite dish: "Tacos with Chorizos"

It isn't exactly clear what happened next, but before I could explain my preference in sauces, I vaguely recollect hearing the words "Shank, shank, shank" behind me, and found myself lying on the sidewalk outside Verlaine.

I got up groggily and recognized another famous yelper, Villanus Meatballus Maximus. Despite his yelp profile picture, he seems a kindly soul. I shared my dating predicament with him.

MM: Maybe you should think about joining the ranks of the omnisexuals?
Mark W: Who are these people?
MM: They are also called PWLTGFEWWs:
Mark W: Sorry! I couldn't hear that in the noise of the traffic. Who are these people?
MM: I said these are People Who VARRRRROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!

(Special Thanks to all the yelpers for their tireless contributions on the threads and reviews, providing the plot narration devices)
