The salsa is really good here.
I've heard the Mole is awesome but I stick with the Chicken Chimichanga (not on the menu, but always available) or the Chicken quesadilla. I know, I'm about as adventurous as they get. The chicken is always really flavorful and I always leave stuffed. My wife gets the Chili Relleno everytime, so there's an option if you don't eat meat (so... 20th century). Don't come here and clog up the queue when I'm hungry.... or else.

Went here after reading about in the LA Weekly and it didn't disappoint. The service was wonderful and our waitress was very excited that we were new to the place, which is always nice. I had the aqua fresca which was incredibly refreshing - chose papaya and lemon juices. We split an order of TACOS DORADOS and an order of DOBLADITAS de MOLE and both were excellent. The potato tacos tasted like mashed potatoes in a taco and the mole sauce was as good as promised. A great find and I'll definitely be coming back!

Carnitas are excellent. I really haven't had the opportunity to eat anything else here because I always get the carnitas. Carnitas here are juicy and so flavorful. I have eaten carnitas at numerous establishments, and by far I think they have the best carnitas.
This place is a hidden gem. I love the light, but tasty fare. It's so fresh and so flavorful. The atmosphere is fun, but completely unique, since it feels a little like you're in a rehabbed storefront. The prices aren't unreasonable either, which is nice... bring a friend. There's a lot of veggie options and the service is excellent.
All-around fantastic. Great food, great coffee, badass agua fresca... and the staff is very, very sweet! I always have a wonderful time when we come here.

Good advice: If the place is called "Alegria," and there's a menu item called "BUDIN ALEGRIA" do it. I can't imagine coming here for tacos or some boring burrito with this gem on the menu.
3 stars because I'm a brat who likes a more cozy dining experience and I'm not crazy about bringing in my own beverages - no beer or wine here, folks, you haul it in yourself, but the food is freshly made with quality ingredients, so if you're in the neighborhood, it will be worth it.

Stopped in for a quick bite during a day trip to LA. Perfect timing - only two other tables. The food was fresh and delicious and the wait staff was attentive and friendly.
It's very cute and clean inside and considering how fresh and tasty everything was I think it is worth paying a little more.
One of the tastiest lunches in town. Easy. Swear. No, really. I promise you. Don't believe me? Stop being such a jerk, Alegria on Sunset is the answer even if you don't know the question.

I had the most delicious break-up lunch here.
Truly, it is hard to be sad when both of you are enjoying tortilla soup and lovely enchilada veracruzanas, all washed down with horchata! I'm telling you, this place had me enchanted and in a dreamy state of mind.
Hell, we might have even be able to stay friends if she had just told me ahead of time that the joint was CASH ONLY. (so one star off for that)

I like Allegria and I should give it 4 stars because they have a lot of creative, home-made, truly 'fresh mex' choices and a killer mole sauce, but the few times I have gotten chicken there, where it was supposed to be all white meat, I got a few mouthfuls of cartliage and bone.. Sorry but thats disgusting. I am not a dark meat, drumstick, wings type of guy though and don't like any mystery 'parts' mixed in with my meat, so I can get kind of picky about that scene. I just feel like whoever is butchering the chicken back there could be a little more careful. Otherwise though, good food. The whole bring your own beer thing is a nice way for them to make up for not having a liquor license. Something to go along with that though is that they are cash only, which kind of blows my mind. In this day and age, no plastic? Is it really that expensive to pay those visa merchant charges guys? Anyway..
no, no, no, no. i do not agree with most reviewers here. the food is fresh and good, but the ambiente of the place does not match the prices they charge. it is worse than a mcdonalds in my opinion (ambiente) and the portion of my meal was ridiculous. i had the highly recommended cream cheese chimichanga and it consisted of 3 fried sticks (kind of like the ones you can get at trader joe's in the snack isle filled with wafer vanilla) that were about the size of a pencil with a couple of romaine leaves for 10.95 - it was good but tiny and not a meal and expensive - enough with overcharging and not putting that dish in the appetizer section of your menu
A big thumbs up for their tacos dorados! Really flavorful. Everything is very fresh and the several times I've been, very consistent.
I am a fan of Alegria on Sunset; first taken there in 2006.
Great food, friendly -- yet painfully slow --service; are they understaffed? I don't know.
(I) Wish there was an outdoor patio but there is not.
I am a big fan of sopas and they make some of the freshest and tastiest ones around. Very moist and well-seasoned. Very generous amounts of shredded lettuce and vegetables.
Love the fresh fruit blended into a juice.
Did not eat at Alegria On Sunset a great deal, for it was too much pressure on my pocket but it is worth the money.
As for eating amongst teens and hipsters, just take your food to go.
You are in the Sunset Junction so expect nothing but "them" (as said with a big grin)
Alegria On Sunset is a good food at good prices...and the thrift shop next door is an added treat too!

The first thing the lady behind the counter said was, "Be quick, we're closing soon." That was kind. We grabbed our menus and sat ourselves. I'm not sure if that's their protocol.
I've never had to add salt to my carne asada steaks at Mexican restaurants, so this experience was definitely a first. On that note, the shrimp lacked any seasoning. It tasted a bit like dirt.
The chips weren't fresh. The salsa wasn't spicy. In fact, it tasted like water.
Also, everything was relatively expensive.
It's one of those places where I finish my meal, but I never return.
Oh, and we finished our food and left before other patrons that were there before us left. Yeah, no need to tell us to hurry up, when we had plenty of time.
Upon entering Alegria for the second time (The first time it was so crowded we didn't wait), I was slightly confused as to what to do. No one greeted us, there were open tables, so I sort of gestured towards one of them. But, we were told to sign up on the wait list.
The restaurant was filled with Silverlake hipsters, about half the tables with kids. This seems to be the place to bring the little ones. Not that I don't like kids, I just wasn't expecting it.
We brought our own bottle of wine (no corkage, yeah!) and started to go over the menu. We order some guac to start with, which was pretty good.
I would call the food, creative Mexican. I had the Budin Alegria ($13). A casserole of sorts with layers of sauted corn tortillas, a special tomatillo sauce, seasoned chicken breast, creamy Jack cheese, roasted pumpkin seeds, rajas of Chile Poblano, Creme Fraiche, sliced zucchini, topped with black olives then baked. It was ok. There wasn't a whole lot of chicken and the zucchini pieces were too large and under cooked. I expected more flavor from the description of the dish, but it didn't stand out.
It came with a side salad, which seemed like bagged lettuce and no dressing. Was I supposed to ask for it?
My friend had the fish tacos ($12). Which were Voted "Best in L.A." by Travel and Leisure Magazine. I'd like to find the person who wrote that article and slap them across the face with a dead fish, because these were the blandest fish tacos I had ever tasted.
The refried beans tasted like Rosarita canned beans and the rice was very bland.
The server was friendly, but this place is definitely uninspiring. It's Mexican food dreamed up by Anglo moms, which would explain the abundance of families with kids eating here.
All-in-all, I concur! Yet another Sunset Junction bonus. I had the Budin Alegria, a creamy, layered, delicious casserole of vegetables and chicken. My tightly seated party of eight was by-and-large quite pleased with the meal. Don't forget to BYOB, and believe me: it's worth the wait.

Yay (sarcasm in voice) I am gonna be review number 71 for this place. Am I really going to make a difference? Is someone who is interested in coming here going to be looking through the review and go "hmmmmm ... what review to trust - DUFFY! Oh, snaps! Hell yeah!"? I doubt it. And, yet, here I go.
Food was good. Big portions, moderate prices. I got the Jason Burrito (steak burrito) and I was happy. It was huge, so I have a lunch tomorrow :)
I also got a smoothie / juice drink. I was happy at that as well.
The waitress was nice. We did end up waiting about for a bit to long to order / get our bill / receive our food, but no biggie.
Oh, word to the wise: THEY DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING BUT CASH. I guess they're used to it, but I came unprepared. Had to walk three blocks to the liquor store to get cash. That was irritating, as there was no sign. but they were cool about it, didn't make a fuss. Hell, they didn't even make me leave something so I didn't just ditch. Trust factor out-weighs the annoyance of having to get the cash. I was happy at that.
Four stars seems accurate.

this place is THE BOMB. i'd heard about it over and over from so many friends and driven by hundred of times but never tried it until last week.
i literally felt like i was eating at my grandmother's kitchen table - everything was so authentic and incredibly delicious. rarely do i find a guacamole anywhere (other than my mom or grandma's house) that is seasoned to perfection and makes my mouth water simply at the thought of it but they managed to do it for me. i had the chipotle chicken dinner that is served with delicious rice & small cup of beans, all of which were fantastic. hell, i'd go even just for the fresh fruit juices...a must try: watermelon, or if you're feeling old school go for the horchata.

Don't even get me started. This is one of the best damn restaurants in LA. PERIOD!!
Every time after I eat here I swear I'm going to pass out from a food coma!
The service is great!
Location is cool (especially if you want to do a little bar hopping after). However the actual restaurant is inside of a strip-mall...very hole-in-the-wall. But that's what makes it great. Aren't all the best restaurants, hole-in-the-walls?
Today was not a good day. Any day where you wake up and think it's Friday, but is only a Wednesday is a really bad day. And then throughout the day, you kinda keep getting excited because you're still thinking it's Friday, well, let me just say, I've had better days.
I feel as if it would all be made better if I could have one of Alegria's amazing blended fruit drinks. Not that their food isn't amazing, but other people have rhapsodized about the food in great detail. I will, therefore, to set myself apart, rhapsodize about the blended fruit drink.
Close your eyes and picture fresh squeezed watermelon juice. It's frothy and bit pulpy. It's also a bit cold. Then, pictured it blended with just a little bit of ice and some cane sugar, maybe a little watermelon chunk so the juice isn't so thin.
This drink is the nectar of the gods. It can heal anything. If you could take a bath in it, not only would you smell delicious, you would probably glow and look years younger. You'd probably also attract some flys, but some things are worth it. I could not come up with something more perfect for the summer, the spring, the winter or the fall.
Not that the food here is bad, far from it. The food is delicious as well; it's fresh; it's creative; it's yum inducing. I particularly like the mole sauce and the burritos. But, it all pales in comparison to the drink.
Oh, and I'm about to make myself cry now because I'm 400 miles away from my favorite drink. And I've just made myself hungry. And I still have a niggling suspicion in the back of my mind that it's supposed to be Friday.
Good to know: cash only.

Alegria is a Silverlake treasure. The food is authentic and creative at the same time. I don't recomend the burritos, as they are the least spectacular thing on the menu - but if you're willing to be a litle adventurous, this chef is creative and fresh. The Agua Frescas are awesome. Portions are huge. Great place to share a dinner.
Hands down one of the best places in Silver Lake to lunch or dine. Outstanding selection of authentic Mexican dishes, and agua fresca to boot (try the watermelon).
Well priced, generous portions, lovingly prepared and served. What more could you ask for?

Alegria is a hidden secret buried in Silver Lake (?). My friend and I were across the street for what turned out to be a lame event. My stomach was eating itself. There was nothing striking about the outside of Alegria, it was easy to miss. Hungry eyes spotted out the first food establishment quickly.
We had less than 10 minutes to get our tushes back to the event. I ordered the ranchero huevos. It's pretty damn hard to pass up ranchero huevos. My friend ordered the burrito. Both entrees were a nice size. We were shocked -- so healthful yet seemingly authentic and very tasty!
The inside was adorable. The clientele seemed cool. The food was fast and fresh. The only drawback is the CASH ONLY policy. 100% will hit up Alegria again.
I'm sad that I've missed out on the Alegria experience for so many years as an "Angelina." *sniffle* If only I could vow to try every food establishment in every strip mall in Los Angeles.... *food dreams!*

After hearing great things about this place, finally tried it out. WTF? A very disappointing experience. The service and cook time is insanely slow. Nothing like being at a table for 10 minutes before you're even asked for a drink order, and then nearly an hour before your food arrives. That said, the lady who waited on us was incredibly friendly and nice, which is the only true compliment i can give the place. Went for dinner and ordered the chile relleno, which they were out of, and then hastily scanned the menu for the next veg dish I could find, which was the Budin Moctezuma. My boyfriend ordered the Dobladitas de Mole.
The guacamole is good, and the salsa tastes fresh but incredibly bland. The crazy long wait to get our meals (on a weeknight!) was simply unacceptable given how disappointing the dishes were when they actually arrived. My Moctezuma was pretty awful, like a South American lasagna stuffed with very overcooked, mushy squash and zucchini . Once those were picked out, the dish was edible. After watching my bf pick at his plate for a couple minutes, clearly not into it, I had a taste for myself. Whoever said the mole sauce was complex must have had someone different in the kitchen when they went. Hands down the worst, most unbalanced mole sauce ever, even the texture and consistency is wrong.
I really wanted to like the place based on the hype from friends, but I just don't get it. I'm convinced people are padding the rating of this place out with "hipster points" - the ironic quality of "fine" dining in a strip mall; the laid-back, speak-easy vibe of BYOB with no corkage, the quirky, if inconvenient and antiquated, cash only policy, the joy of eating "authentic" Mexican food in a room of full of other white people. It's the kind of place people like to think of as some hidden gem that they've found. On a stretch that's paved with great mexican joints, I'd suggest going somewhere else.
I'm giving one star for the super friendly lady who waited on us and another for the BYOB policy.
Wack. La Parrila down the block is much better. The first two surprises was how expensive the dishes were and the lack of Mexicans dining... which is never a good sign. And being a former Albuquerque denizen I was disappointed in the lack of flavor and spiceness in the chile. Burrito was decent but would have preferred a taco stand on Alvarado. Chips and salsa were not the best either... service was good, but I'll keep my taco eating down the block.

I must say this place is pretty over hyped. I enjoy the lunch menu alot more than the dinner. I guess the food is pretty good but mad expensive. But the Agua's Frescas almost makes up for it ;)
Been coming here since they opened. The food has remained consistently delicious and fresh.
Dishes to try :
Some of the best carnitas in town, seriously something to savor. I covet the carnitas tacos.
The chiles rellenos are killer. pasilla's stuffed with sauteed veggies and cheese.
Breakfast is always good here. I order the mule dish for breakfast. I can't remember what's in it, but I always order it and I am never disappointed.
The chimichangas are good, as are the potato enchiladas, the salsa, the guacamole...
Actually, I can't think of anything on the menu that doesn't taste perfect, and I have only had a couple of problems with the service over the years, overall they are very friendly and accommodating.
Great place for catering.
Cash only and B.Y.O.B.

I've never been one to Yelp before, but this restaurant is worth it. Its small, cozy, intimate and has great food. I honestly haven't had such interesting combinations before, all fresh and brought out quickly. Its not even that expensive! For a mildly off the path restaurant, it certainly draws an eclectic group of people, from French speaking dads to your every day little family.
That said, if you don't really like children, don't bother going before 7 p.m. or you will be met with a heard of humans with babies or gaybies and the like. One of them even stood on a chair next to me and yelled "SALSA" for about ten minutes, with the parents doing nothing. This obviously has nothing to do with the quality of the restaurant.
Babies aside, this place is awesome and I will definitely begin to sample everything on the menu!

BEST DAMN QUESADILLAS EVER! IT IS HOT HOT HOT, I DARE U TO PUT MORE OF THEIR SPECIAL HOT SAUCE(request) ON IT! the exterior is crispy peferction and the inside is so fracking good. MUST TRY! I never had such great quesadilla!
Fish Taco - is above average. Fish is fried into small chunks but very good. Definitely try.
Also had the Fried Burrito(forgot the name) - which is really rare cause they were able to Fried the exterior without overcooking the coleslaw, cheese, and salsa inside. Honestly, I don't like coleslaw in my burritos, but definitely try this out.
Their smoothies very healthy and natural, no added sugar, persevatives, had the straw/banana & friend had mango/orange - very natural.
Complimentary NACHOS - sucks....but their salsa is decent.
Very comfy, dim atmosphere. Can get cramped sitting in the middle. Neighborhood doesn't look too good.
I RECOMMEND coming before dinner - dinner prices are much much higher. Even though this place isn't cheap, I higher recommend coming here for their authentic Mexican food!
Great customer service!
Parking is hell in that small little lot shared with many other stores.

i absolutely LOVE the food here. i had a burrito my first time, and i don't remember i got the other time.. but it was delicious. it's quite a bit pricier than you'd expect, but i think it's because the portions are gargantuan, and the meat tastes extras good. you MUST go. it's in a strip mall, so watch out if you haven't been.
I do not say this lightly (I am, after all, obsessed with food, and horribly, obsessively picky): Quite possibly, best Mexican food I have ever had.
People have been recommending this place to me for around 4 years. I finally remembered to go last weekend.
Some of the most inventive and (most importantly) best-tasting Mexican food I have ever had. Very possibly THE best.
This puts other trendy places nearby, with better decor (think Malo, which is pretty good) to absolute shame. But it would be pretty damn hard for anyone to match this.

FOOD
EVAR
(okay unless you're IN mexico... or somebody makes it at home, perhaps).
Alegria On Sunset is seriously the best Mexican food I have ever had. And it's consistently good. The place is very simple but the food tastes very complex and elaborate. There's nothing simple about the taste, let me tell you. I love their Burrito de Pollo. It's the size of my apartment and actually has tons of white meat chicken in it rather than all lettuce like in most burritos. Their rice inside the burrito is season properly, as well. It's not generic by any means. Their guacamole and chips is also a MUST have.
I have been going here for years and the food is as good as ever and the staff is just as friendly as ever. Always smiling and happy to see you.
People complain about the lack of liquor license, but honestly, I like this part. I like that you can bring something different each time. We like to switch it up with friends and that way there is always something different. Beer, wine, whatever. It's fun to try different tings from home with your meal.
Also, PLEASE try the chocolate chimichanga for dessert. It's off the hook. It's a big flour tortilla wrapped around a king size Hershey's almond bar and then deep fried. It's covered with a strawberry sauce and whipped cream. And even if you hate flan, it's good here. It doesn't wiggle. It's off the hook.
Try this place NOW!

Hot little joint, reminds of the cool little taqueria's up in SF. I heard the line is usually out the door for this little hole in the wall, but tonight we walked in and sat right down. The best part about the night was that this Mexican joint happens to be BYOB, my favorite. So, while I was with two lovely ladies (that's right, two), being the gentleman that I am, I got up and volunteered to walk to the liquor store for us. When I got there, I felt like I was in a larger version of my hometown. I grabbed some weird Brazillian Brahma and headed up to the counter. While I was paying, this old, sort of frazzled old woman lightly touches me on the shoulder and whispers, you have a good night now. Man, I love L.A. That made my whole night.
And it's a good lead in for my review. What a unique experience, both at the liquor store and the eats. The food at Alegria was very tasty, and unlike any Mexican I've tried before. The guac and chips beforehand were great, and my carnitas was super soft and delicious, although a tad too salty. The thing that did it for me however was the homemade hot sauce, so delicious and, well, hot. I had to be careful putting it on my food because it would have ended up killing me.
Muy bueno, for sure.

Alegria on Sunset is good home-style Mexican cooking. A cute and quirky little joint with friendly service. I have 3 wishes for Alegria:
1. I wish and pray to god that they get a liquor license so that they could start making margaritas, I have a feeling that their Maragarita's would be kick ass since their agua frescas are supreme.
2. I wish that it wasn't cash only.
3. I also wish they served free refills of chips and salsa.
Food wise everything is good with a down to earth atmosphere. This is a must try place for really good Mexican food!
****I brought a bunch of little bottles of tequila and added them to my Agua Fresca's and I'm never going back. This is the best dam do it yourself margarita on planet earth. You still only get 4 stars since I have to do all the work, but bringing your own tequila to Alegria - It's a good thing.

Mexican food with a twist.
Definitely get their Spearmint Lemonade or Watermelon Juice. Oh so refreshing on a sweltering day.
Got today's special: Pollo Asada Salad. Tasty, but could've done without the marinated green beans (a little tough). Downside was that it was supposed to come with redskin potatoes, but didn't. When I asked a waitress about the missing taters, I got a "hold on" and then never got a reply. no biggie, but i bet it would be great with the potatoes.
Accompanying raspberry vinagrette was fabulous. I usually don't prefer raspberry dressings, but this was so flavorful, chock full of raspberry deliciousness, and had a little kick.
ps- our waiter was hilarious, he kept saying "I love it, it's SOOO good" for every single thing we ordered or mentioned. you have to love when the waiters adore the food.

Such mixed feelings about this place. Let's start with the positives:
In terms of individual dishes, I give the tortilla soup 5+ stars, it's so amazing. Any time I feel a cold coming on, I head straight for Alegria and get a medium bowl (the large is way gigantic.) It's cheesy, but not too cheesy. Savory, spicy, but not too spicy. Add the fresh chopped cilantro, onions, tomato, and it's one happy bowl of soup.
The guacamole is amazing, and although it's not listed on the menu, you can get just a half-order to save some dough.
The agua frescas are super yum, especially in summer when you can get watermelon. mmmmmm I also like lemon with ginger added if they are low on the sweet fruits.
The downsides are: the heinous parking lot, the prices are a little high (I paid almost $10 for a carne asada burrito. It was fine, but $10!!!) The hipster crowd gets annoying. (Sorry, they just do. Why do they all have to talk so loud about their gigs or screenplays or video game designing?) Also, hipster parents don't seem to believe in any kind of boundaries or discipline at all, so there are always 6 year olds in Ramones T-shirts running around and throwing food everywhere. Sometimes the wait is atrocious. Cash only, and the closest ATM is a couple of blocks away, which seems like a death march when your date is all annoyed, waiting for you to return.
All in all, Alegria gets pretty high marks from me, but I always have to weigh how much annoyance I can handle before agreeing to go.

NO CREDIT CARDS!
I put this up front because I recently ate there and my friend neglected to bring cash. She had to seek it elsewhere. All the ATMs within jogging distance were broken. So she bought a 16 pack of waters, hoping she could get cash with her ATM card. Except she couldn't. So she wandered around Echo Park for a fair spell with the water hanging like a lodestone 'round her neck. It made me giggle, but made her not-so-happy. The moral: bring cash.
And when you do, you'll be able to pay for some damn tasty Mexican food. The carnitas, in particular, are ridiculous. But you pretty much can't go wrong. The place gets packed on weekends, so get there early or be prepared for a long-ish wait. Unless you're seeking an fairly overpriced scene, you can skip some other places (like, I don't know, Malo) and hit Alegria. Just sayin'.

I have to say that I am always somewhat shocked when someone let's me in on a not-so-secret gem in LA. I have passed by Alegria about a million times and never knew it existed until last weekend. I went to dinner here with a few friends and we were in the greater Sliverlake area looking for a restaurant where we wouldn't have to make a reservation and more importantly where we wouldn't have to wait. I'm told that normally Alegria has a wait out the door but in we walked in around 9pm and sat right down. Alegria is a small hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall down the street from the Silverlake Lounge. The menu offers really traditional Mexican dishes like Mole, Chile Relleno and Tampiquena, which is what I had. The best part about this place is that it is BYOB which are hard to come by in La La Land. This is the type of restaurant that I will frequent just to try every last thing on the menu. I'm especially excited to try Alegria for breakfast!

The first time I came across here was after reading an article with Jonathan Ke Quan (the Asian kid from Goonies), where he mentioned Alegria to be his favorite Mexican eatery in Silverlake. Since Data has never steered me wrong, I knew I had to try it out.
The interior is small and charming, with a bunch of knick-knacks and random displays on the walls. The food is always authentic tasting, fresh, and delicious. I always feel like I'm eating at my best friend's house, except they don't call me "la china" nor do they have a television showing live soccer games in Spanish 24/7 at the restaurant. Word.
