Happy I found this place (after a long circuitous trek).  I am reminded every time I go why I pay 4 bucks for a cupcake - it's delicious and closest to homemade real baked goods that I can recall from childhood.  Not a fan of icing, but love whatever they concocted to seem like icing on the carrrot cake muffic.  Think the home-y decorated interior is adorable.  Always seem to come when there is a line.  Can't believe half a dozen glutenfree cupcakes are $20+.  Yup, knocks it down a star - oh and only whole milk available.  Too rich for my little blood.

I was in NYC a couple months ago with two of my dearest friends, who were nice enough to forgo a trip to Magnolia so I could try Babycakes instead.

These cupcakes are wonderful! Though they taste more muffin-y than cupcake-y to me. But that comes with the territory. I must say, I wasn't a big fan of the frosting, I thought it was kind of icky. Wish they also had buttercream frosting, but then that would go against the whole vegan thing.

Regardless, I purchased four or five cupcakes and wolfed down the remaining two the next morning for breakfast, as soon as I woke up in the hotel room. My friends were cracking up. But when you can't have gluten, cupcakes are a rare treat.

My friends had the spelt cupcakes and seemed to like them, but one of them is vegetarian and the other one is down with vegetarian/vegan fare. Not sure what non-gluten free, non vegetarian/vegan folks would think of this place. But then again, Babycakes isn't targeting them, so who cares. Some might say the measure of a good gluten free place is that you can't tell it's gluten free. I disagree. I think you can always tell it's gluten free, if you're lucky enough to be able to eat gluten. So as long as the gluten free folks like it, you're good.

Oh, and the atmosphere of this place is much more charming than Magnolia. Love the measuring cups hanging in the window. I just wish they'd open locations in San Francisco and Portland, OR!

Babycakes is adorable, such a pretty, tiny little place.

Of course they don't taste exactly like regular cupcakes and baked goods, but I never expected them to.  I wanted a delicious, sweet baked treat that would satisfy my cupcake love.  I am lactose-intolerant and dairy-free baked goods (well, ones that actually taste okay) are very hard to come by.  My own attempts at dairy-free baking have been rife with failures.  Babycakes satisfied me entirely.  I can soothe my perpetual angst about being unable to digest dairy by indulging in one or two of these yummy treats.

I thought the texture was very nice for the ingredients they use.  And the frosting was awesome!  I got one that was lemony and it was quite nice.  As a bonus, they are super healthy, and thus guilt-free.

Thanks for existing, Babycakes, and providing snacks to those of us who cannot or choose not to eat certain ingredients.

As a connoisseur of vegan cupcakes, let me just say that the lemon spelt cupcakes are incredible. I am especially a fan of the creamy, creamy, cruelty-free, (did I mention creamy?) frosting. It's out of this world. I've never been able to make a suitable vegan icing/frosting, but they do it so well. The actual cupcake was delicious.

Now, I actually bake a pretty mean cupcake, but having been able to experience the glory of what babycakes can produce makes me want to live in NYC. Or at least closer than a 2-hour train ride away. I might move to NYC just for these cupcakes. (Well, that's probably not entirely true.)

I tried the carrot, vanilla, chocolate, and lemon cupcakes, and the lemon ones were definitely the best. All my non-vegan friends very much enjoyed these confections.

I also bought some mini-brownies. They are incredibly luscious and chocolatey. I wish I had bought more things! Everything looked pretty delicious.

I spent $21 on 4 mini-brownies and 6 cupcakes which actually isn't *that* expensive--especially for vegan desserts. BUY A BOX. They're worth their weight in gold.

If you go there, will you buy me a cupcake? I'll be forever indebted to you.

Oh, how happy those cupcakes made me! And how sad I've since become, having finished the final cupcake last night.

If I were a vegan, vegetarian, animal rights activist, person with specific allergies/preferances, uber health nut, or all of the above, I would absolutely love Babycakes.

But I'm not.

I've tried Crumbs, Magnolia's, Billy's, Sunshine, Buttercup, and other cupcake places to achieve a particular goal of mine: to truly discover NYC"s best cupcake. I may be what one might call a...cupcake conoisseur.

That being said, Babycakes falls very short from even being considered. Their cupcakes seemed to be what they were famous for (Erin, the owner, even had a guest appearnace on the Martha Stewart Show) yet they tasted the same as  the $.50 cupcakes from a grocery market. I tried the lemon spelt, carrot cake, and chocolate shot. The carrot cupcake was recommended by one of the workers and definitely was not impressive at all. I understand that Lemon cupcake was made of spelt flour, but that is not an excuse for it to be incredibly dry and grainy. The chocolate shot was like a tablespoon of frosting for like $2. Ridiculous. Each cupcake was around $3.50. Babycakes' cupcakes are overpriced and disgusting.

However, their frozen chocolate chip cookie sandwich was good on this paritcularly hot summer day. But then again, the chipwich concept (cookies+ice cream) is innately delicious so it's pretty hard for one to taste bad.

Amazing.  As someone who has recently gone wheat-free to control Crohn's, I've been flocking to every gluten-free bakery and restaurant in this city.  I've especially been missing sweets and I nearly died when I had my first babycakes cupcake.

So moist and sweet!  The frosting is great--the agave syrup gives it a bit of a different kick.  Also check out the chocolate chip banana bread.

I prefer babycakes to other GF bakeries as they use no refined sugar, another disgestive culprit.  I'm getting my birthday cake from them this week and I couldn't be more excited!

Aside from my own gluten, dairy-free baking, Babycakes is one of the few places I have found in the COUNTRY that does a decent job baking without wheat and dairy. I mean it's so good you can't tell the difference. I have been tempted to have cupcakes, muffins, and cookies shipped out to me in Seattle because I am not always in New York. It's that good folks.

Fluffy, creamy, and I don't feel like ass after consuming - now that is something to be happy about.

5 gold stars!

No sugar would normally mean no fun but Babycakes puts up a good fight!  No I'm not a fan of sugarless cupcakes but they weren't horrible, just different.  I don't think they were moist and they were smaller than your average cupcake.  You can't go in there expecting your typical tooth aching cupcake.  I still can't describe how they taste except different.  No I won't be going back there because I'm just not a fan.  I will say however that with the amount of traffic in there that day, they must have a huge following.  They have excellent packaging if that matters to anyone btw.  :)  Happy eating!

I mean, these cupcakes were good, but nothing amazing. And definitely not better than regular cupcakes. I got a spelt vanilla and spelt chocolate. They crumbled as I ate them, which caused some to fall on the floor. They are also $3 per, and are the same size, if not a little smaller than the kind I make at home... with half the frosting. I do applaud them for making them vegan, although I am convinced they could be better. And $3.65 for the gluten free ones is quite steep.

Babycakes, if you're listening, please come to Miami! This vegan place (keep reading) place uses agave nectar instead of refined sugar (keep reading). I used to be vegan, and one of my pet peeves is bad vegan desserts. This place proves there is such a thing as great vegan sweets. The cupcakes here stand on their own as great, not just as great "vegan" cupcakes. Carrot cake with "cream cheese" frosting is dee-lish! Wheat free vegan cupcakes are also available, but I can't testify to those. On my last trip there, I discovered a vegan strawberry "cream" "buttlermilk" scone that was to-die-for. Also, they serve organic coffee--Gorilla, I think, roasted in Brooklyn, baby! Wylie Dufresne can't match that pairing.

THE BEST VEGAN CUPAKES and BROWNIES!

Note to future BF's (or BFF's for that matter) - feel free to say it with Babycakes instead of long-stemmeds. Although both would be even sweeter!

The cupcakes are only $2 and the adorable brownie bites are only a dollar!
Nobody will guess they are vegan. Thank god the icing isn't of the overly-sugary Magnolia Bakery variety. But if that's your thing, try the Vegan Treats cupcakes at Teany or Atlas instead.

Many agave-sweetened and gluten-free options.

$10 minimum for credit cards.

Vegan agave-sweetened blueberry muffins (about $3) are decent but I've been completely spoiled by the vegan raspberry muffins from Birdbath. Come to Babycakes for the real sweets!

An office baby shower and the guest of honor, R, has pregnancy diabetes.  We want to have cupcakes, since they are the new hot item, but where do I get cupcakes that R can eat?  I'd heard that Babycakes, which I had been avoiding for it's uber-healthy (read: yuck!) recipes, makes Agave sweetened cupcakes.  Still technically sugar, but lower on the glycemic index.  R could eat them and not have an episode.  So off I trudged to Ludlow and Broome in the pouring rain to get them.

Everyone at the shower remarked at how good the cupcakes were.  This is of course before I told them how they were made.  After I spilled the beans, well, I think Babycakes might get a little more crowded.  You know, mommies are always after sweet treats they can feed their kids and not have them climbing the walls afterwards.  Even L, the most finicky lady I've ever met, loved the cupcakes.

For me, the frosting is great.  But eating two cupcakes in a row can get to be a bit too much.  Agave may be a natural sweetener, but it tastes a little chemically after a while.  Especially the lemon.  The cake is a little mealy, but I can't expect too much considering they're made with spelt.  Eat sparingly.

The bakery is really cute, and the service kind and efficient.

This hole-in-the-wall bakery, BabyCakes, serves up a humble assortment of Gluten-Free and Vegan treats, and the staff members are as sweet as the treats, but I have to say, it's definitely not a perfect 10...or 5 as the case may be...

The cornbread was dry dry dry! And the selection of treats is often limited. If you're looking for treats that are very sweet, I wouldn't recommend this place - try Teany, or the oatmeal date vegan scones at whole foods (glorious!).

That said, the ingredients they use (spelt, agave, etc.) are fab and much healthier for you, and the banana choco chip bread was pretty tasty.

If I need a vegan yumyum fix, and I'm in the area, it's the spot!

Enjoy!

Being a vegan, it's hard to find fresh baked goods, so I tried out Babycakes. All I can say is that they make great cupcakes. I tried the spelt lemon and spelt chocolate and both were amazing. Also took home some brownies and chocolate chip banana bread which were also very good.
My only complaint was that the cupcakes were a little small, but I can understand this, based on the cost of operating such a place and that fact that this place is a small operation.

For the non-vegans out there, my friend (who is not even close to vegan) tried the cupcakes and really liked them. He actually thought the icing was much better and smoother than the icing he had at a "real" well-known bakery in the city; plus he thought these weren't overly sweet, which he considered a positive thing.
I definitely don't understand the reviews that say the cupcakes are gritty. They were in no way gritty.
I'm definitely going back to try other things, and to figure out a good way to bring some cupcakes home with me.

This place was fabulous. I specifically searched this place out for the GF cupcakes. I celebrated my birthday with my best friend just so we could both have cupcakes. They were great. I stayed away from the spelt as I don't like that taste and I would probably have a reaction but the other gluten free goodies were great. I had the blueberry crumb cake. For all the celiacs out there, make the trip to Babycakes. They said they would be opening a store in LA so at least I could get things shipped to San Francisco.  New York still rocks! This place was the best and the staff was more than kind.

Service:  all the stars.  These people are the sweetest.  NYC can be a beating sometimes but I have never been treated shabbily in Babycakes.

When I first walked into this store I thought I would need to try one of everything to be happy in life.  After trying a small range of the treats, my desire to overeat in here has calmed slightly.

Everything looks so pretty but nothing has ever sent me over the edge.  Why four stars then?  The shop is so cute and the people are the nicest.

I think Babycakes would be most useful when you need to cater a party.  Order a few boxes of cupcakes and watch people lose their minds when you tell them the cakes are vegan.

This is such a cute place and the chocolate and vanilla spelt cupcakes are quite delicious (I could eat dozens of them daily!), however you must to remember a few key things: 1) these are cupcakes are not made with conventional ingredients so expect  the same sugary, buttery bits you get elsewhere 2) you will be paying a premium price for your dietary needs or fancy food habits and 3) given the ingredients they are working with they are doing a damn good job!

Over rated. The baked goods here have great icing, but the weird grainy flavor grates my teeth. The coffee is watery and their prices are a bit high for such tiny servings.
I like my hippy-granola desserts, so don't think I'm saying the weird flavor is from the agave or gluten free flour. I don't know what makes it taste odd, but it does. Maybe its the bitter--rude-- attitude from almost every person who works there that make the baked goods taste spoiled. Oh the days when there use to be Justin, Jeffrey and so many more friendly face... but over the last couple of weeks their services have gone down and prices gone up.

If you go, get the spelt cakes and regular brownies, as they have less of the spoiled grainy flavor. But why buy babycakes when there are so make more places, like Atlas, Wild Ginger, Earth Tonez, and mny more where you can get delicious vegan desserts/

People that have met me recently don't know that person that I was in my other life...a little over a year ago. I had the biggest sweet tooth in the entire world. I claimed my number one favorite food was chocolate chip cookies and basically would eat them multiple times a day...looking back I wonder how I wasn't 300 pounds.

Well, I found out a little over a year ago that the reason I'd been fainting and shaking was because I can't have sugar. I had to make a huge diet change. It was excruciatingly hard for a sweets addict like myself. Basically, I figured if I can't have the good stuff I'm not going to have any at all...how good is sugar free stuff??

Well, all that changed the night of my birthday this year when my boyfriend took me here after dinner...since I can never have dessert. I don't think I have been that happy in a long time. My boyfriend thought I had gone crazy. I freaked out. I had 2 cupcakes and a cupcake top AND it was delicious!

I've only been back once but it's amazing for those of us that can't eat all of the sweets that we would like to due to dietary constraints. Or for those of us who are trying to eat very healthy.

Thank you so much, Babycakes!

Hello sweet, sweet cupcakes! Hello! You are made from flours that do not destroy my belly and you taste like yum even if your texture is slightly more like a muffin than a cupcake. But, seriously, who the HELL cares? Put you in my mouth. I was able to eat cake for my birthday last year. That, my friend, is a wonderful thing.

I want to smush your icing in my fingers and then all over my face, because it is like being 1 again and having my first cake.

While I like the concept of dairy and gluten free organic, vegan baked goods, I wasn't sure what the BabyCakes cupcakes would taste like.  I tried the vanilla spelt cupcake ($3).  The moist cake had a nutty flavor.  It did not taste like vanilla cake, but it wasn't bad - just different.  The frosting, which was spread on thinly, tasted sweet but not like vanilla either.  I'm not sure why the vanilla flavor was so weak.  Mr. Morose pronounced the chocolate cupcake, chalky.

Is vanilla extract not vegan?  Are sprinkles not vegan?  I'll give it an extra star for being vegan.

They also had chocolate, lemon, and carrot cupcakes, as well as cupcake tops.  Non-cupcake goods included scones, muffins, crumb cake, cookies, loaves, tea cakes, and cinnamon rolls.   You can also buy their t-shirts and Cup-A-Cake cupcake holders.

The shop has a homey, comfortable feel with an open kitchen and no seating.  I was very pleased to see a photo of Martha Stewart there.  Their signature cupcake boxes are great.  They hold the cupcake(s) in place and they're adorable, especially when tied with their waxed red & white twine.  Martha would approve.

Babycakes is a fantastic natural and organic bakery!! It's a great place to get alternative baked goods for those who are allergic to gluten, wheat, dairy, egg and soy. I love the homey and comfortable setting that *is* Babycakes. Unfortunately for me, I didn't love the chocolate and vanilla spelt cupcakes but the blueberry crumb cake was pretty good. I loved that they had cupcake tray to-go containers that keep the cupcakes in place!! Brilliant. Glad such place exists but I think I need the "real" stuff...

Despite the lovely staff and the cute space, I was really disappointed in Babycakes.  I picked up lemon, red velvet and vanilla cupcakes yesterday at the store.  The cupcakes were dry and heavy, and the frosting on the vanilla was soupy and gross.

I also thought they were kind of small for the price

I really wanna love this place, though so I will try it again!

5 stars because the desert was edible by myself and my Gluten Free beau.
5 stars because even though it's way out of my way, this shop is adorable.
5 stars for kind, patience bakery staff who were knowledgeable about their products.
5 stars for the oohing and ahhing, and the multiple "yum!!!" that my beau serenaded me with. (I now know where his birthday cake is coming from.)
5 stars for their variety, and for the fact that even though baked goodies in Manhattan are a pricey commodity, I was able to buy 2 cupcakes(1 GF chocolate, 1 GF carrot cake), 1 piece of chocolate cake, 1 piece of blueberry crumb cake, 1 chocolate chip cookie, 2 brownies (1 regular, 1 acai), and 1 piece of apple cornbread, for about $20-- not too much of a bank breaker.

This place is definitely primed for a repeat visit.
I recommend that they open an uptown location!

Babycakes, Babycakes. I have mixed feelings about you.

So, I've heard GREAT things about their cupcakes before I ventured out to Broome Street to try it on my own. Little did I know that many of the great things I've heard came from people who are allergic to gluten and/or pretty much everything else. They think these cupcakes are so great because they don't know what REAL cupcakes taste like. And if they do, eating one is usually followed by a certain unpleasantness that NO ONE should associate with cupcakes.

So here I am, in the cute, but really tiny bakeshop, munching down on what I thought was a yellow cupcake with lemon frosting. The boy behind the counter, who was very very nice, recommended this cupcake to me, so I figured, he works there, he should know what's good. This is where the confusion hits. This does not taste like yellow cake. It tastes more like... pumpkin? And the texture is very crumbly, and very un-cupcake-like (I assume this is because of the lack of wheat.) Also, I paid 3 bucks for this sucker. That is way too much to be paying for cupcakes.

However, I was tremendously impressed by the frosting. While the ratio was a little on the low side compared to the some-what dry cake, it was a flavorful and tasty lemon icing.

So, I am sorry, for now, Babycakes, I will give you 3 stars. But I have not given up on you yet. What I will do is take my gluten-allergic friend Kyle next time he's in the area, and perhaps give it another go. Maybe try the red velvet, or the chocolate variation. I am still open to you, Babycakes.

Oh, and also, you will go on my list (check it out peeps) because I think that this little bakeshop is doing great things for all of the Kyle's of the world and allowing them a slight taste of the joy that cupcakes bring. But it ain't the real thing, Babycakes. It just ain't.

Any group of women that can make vegan desserts taste better than those made with wheat flour, refined sugar and dairy get mad props in my book. If I wasn't gay, I'd ask for all their hands in marriage. Or a first date. Whatever straight people do, I've only kissed three women in all my years on this planet. The point is, all vegan bakeries should scramble to replicate Babycakes' recipes ASAP, 'cos these women know how to turn a dessert *out*.

Since I found out I was allergic to wheat a few years back, I have been tortured by the surge in cupcakeries in the world. I miss cake. I love cake!

Going to ny, I was so excited to try out BAbycakes- the though of cupcakes I could eat was just beyond exciting.

Here's the thing though- I think that you can do a good vegan cupcake, and that you can do a good wheat-free cupcake (possibly), but the combination is atrocious.

I can still feel the icky mealy texture of the cakes and the unctuous icing. It was disgusting. I don't know what the icing is made of, but it felt slick and synthetic. All in all, these made my mouth sad. :(

They get two stars from me- one for effort, as I really do applaud any attempt at creating wheat-free goodies, and one for the raspberry corn cake thing. That was pretty tasty, but then again, I can make a killer wheat-free cornbread at home so it isn't difficult.

I have a healthy appetite for baked goods, especially the HEALTHY variety. I was thrilled to find BabyCakes, which offers healthy alternatives while maintaining a uniquely decadent flavor. And, hello!!!  The cute factor of the store is unbelievable!!

I tried the chocolate with chocolate frosting and vanilla with lemon frosting cupcakes with Spelt, as opposed to the Gluten-free versions, the apple cinnamon toastie,  banana loaf and coffee. Spelt allows the texture to be akin to regular cupcakes. The icing, as I was told by one of the kind people, is heat-sensitive, which means the cupcakes should be consumed as soon as possible--not a problem at all!!

The cupcakes were very moist and fresh without any odd, sugary lingering aftertaste many overly processed cupcakes have.

I love the apple cinnamon toastie. It was very sweet, but also refreshing. The apple bits were fresh and not over cooked.

I wasn't totally moved by the banana loaf, as it was a bit bland and dry. I was hoping for a vibrant fruit flavor as I had found in the toastie.

Now, with every pastry or baked good I try, I have to wash it down with the house coffee. Many times I find that the food was great, but the coffee was treated like an afterthought. Not with Babycakes. The coffee was incredibly smooth and flavorful. There was a creamy, full texture without an oily residue. It had a clean, crisp taste.

So overall, BabyCakes has won my heart and my body thanks you!

The healthiest cup cakes you will ever eat. Tasty, but a little to pricey to do too often. Great for a treat if you have dairy intolerances.

My wheat/ soy/ dairy/ egg/ refined sugar/ many things-free diet had me on a search for a bakery alternative, which I've found at Babycakes. I tried a number of their spelt cupcakes, the skinny (cinnamon) buns, and their agave-sweetened brownies. The prices are indeed high and the portions, as others have noted, are on the small side. The service was friendly and helpful though, so long as you talk to the girls who know the ingredients better.

The consistency of the cupcakes are bit grainy. However, they do an excellent job with the skinny bun, which I found satisfying. Do be aware it's not the consistency of a normal cinnamon bun,; it's denser but still quite tasty. The brownies are the size of two-bite brownies (so don't expect a big square), and are cakey, not dense and fugdey, which was disappointing to me.

At any rate, I give this place a 4 because they do a good job with offering alternative treats for those of whohave many allergies and/or appreciate the healthy alternative. I will be back for more treats.

Oh Babycakes, I love you so!  I'm certainly not one to reach for the vegan option of anything, but this city is so over-crowded with the overly-iced, overly-sugary magnolia-clone cupcakes, and Babycakes is a breath of fresh air.  Their spelt cupcakes could go head to head with any other in the city and win for their lightness, subtly sweet taste and amazing icing.  I highly recommend the carrot and lemon varieties.  Their agave-sweetened brownie bites are also perfectly delicious, and the portions are just right.  I've had some of their other cakes and breads, which are decent, but I come here for the cupcakes and brownies.  Also, the staff are very sweet and they are open late for your after-dinner, before-drink LES strolling needs.

Deanna needed cupcakes, so she made a sojourn to Babycakes in hopes that they would have some gluten-free stuff.

Little did she know that virtually everything is GF, and what isn't only uses spelt flour.

I haven't been brave enough to test out how spelt affects my system, so I went for some GF cupcakes and blueberry coffee cake.  The coffee cake was probably my favorite--moist and sweet and crunchy, all in the right combinations.  The cupcakes sat around my hostel for a day before they were eaten, which probably wasn't the best idea...but even for not being fresh, they were pretty good.  A bit dry, but still tasty.  And that icing...holy hell, if you'd told me it was made from fresh cream from the cow they keep tied up in a 2x2 pen out back, I'd've believed you.

I'm a fan of people who see a need for something and do something about it. Erin McKenna had some pretty gnarly food allergies but was like "goddammit people I want a cupcake just like everyone else in this city" So she set out to make vegan/gluten free/ allergy sensitive treats for her ad for those like her and for everyone else in between. My usual complaint with vegan baked goods is that the cake is dry-bone dry. The cupcake I had was the teeniest, tiniest bit dry almost imperceptible-icing YUM.

The staff was friendly and they don't seem to have any bitch ass rules about how many cucakes you can buy.

I love babycakes! The cupcakes are gluten and dairy free and still taste as good as anything that has wheat and dairy in it if not better. The red velvet is amazing. You have to love this place. I would eat here over Magnolia and Crumbs any day.

Babycakes was just what I wanted it to be.  A cute little vegan bakery with a cute and quirky vibe.  We got iced pumpkin bread, which was awesome.  I'd love to go back and try everything else soon!   My only issue, as a claustrophobic lady, was that this place is tiny!  It was pretty busy when we went in and I felt that we were sort of rushed to order and get out of the way.  In any case, you New Yorkers are probably used to that and I'm just being a wimp.   Babycakes gets my 4 stars for now.

Everytime I go to Babycakes it is the best 5-minutes of the day.  Luckily I live around the corner for frequent trips.

The staff is super friendly and even though the cupcakes are spelt and gluten-free, they taste DELICIOUS, better than Billy's/Magnolia by far...and way better for you.  I am not vegan (only veggie) but if I ever go Vegan...this will be my first meal.

Comes in a bunch of flavors, but late at night only vanilla and chocolate will be left-good enough for me.

What is there to say?  I love this place!  If you're thinking gluten-free or vegan desserts aren't tasty... prepare to be amazed.
